1 Timothy

Chapter 6

Summary

Paul concludes his first letter to Timothy by addressing the conduct of servants and warning against those who use godliness as a means of financial gain. He famously declares that "godliness with contentment is great gain" and that the "love of money is the root of all kinds of evil." Paul charges Timothy to flee from these things and to "fight the good fight of faith," pursuing righteousness and godliness. He concludes with a solemn charge before the "blessed and only Potentate" and a final instruction for the wealthy to be rich in good works, being ready to share for the sake of eternal life.

1

Let as many servants as are under the yoke count their own masters worthy of all honour, that the name of God and His doctrine be not blasphemed.

2

And those who have believing masters, let them not despise them because they are brothers, but rather serve them because those who partake of the benefit are believing and beloved. These things teach and exhort.

3

If anyone teaches otherwise and does not consent to wholesome words, even the words of our Lord Jesus Christ, and to the doctrine which is according to godliness,

4

He is proud, knowing nothing, but obsessed with disputes and arguments about words, from which come envy, strife, slanders, and evil suspicions,

5

Perverse disputings of those of corrupt minds and destitute of the truth, supposing that godliness is a means of gain; from such withdraw yourself.

6

But godliness with contentment is great gain.

7

For we brought nothing into this world, and it is certain we can carry nothing out.

8

And having food and clothing let us be content with them.

9

But those who desire to be rich fall into temptation and a snare, and into many foolish and harmful lusts which drown people in destruction and perdition.

10

For the love of money is the root of all kinds of evil, which while some coveted after, they have strayed from the faith and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.

11

But you, O man of God, flee these things and pursue righteousness, godliness, faith, love, patience, and gentleness.

12

Fight the good fight of faith, lay hold on eternal life, to which you were also called and have confessed a good confession before many witnesses.

13

I charge you in the sight of God, who gives life to all things, and before Christ Jesus, who before Pontius Pilate witnessed a good confession,

14

That you keep this commandment without spot, blameless, until the appearing of our Lord Jesus Christ,

15

Which in His own time He shall show, who is the blessed and only Potentate, the King of kings and Lord of lords;

16

Who alone has immortality, dwelling in light which no one can approach; whom no one has seen nor can see; to whom be honour and power everlasting. Amen.

17

Charge those who are rich in this world that they be not haughty, nor trust in uncertain riches, but in the living God, who gives us richly all things to enjoy;

18

That they do good, that they be rich in good works, ready to distribute, willing to share;

19

Laying up in store for themselves a good foundation against the time to come, that they may lay hold on eternal life.

20

O Timothy, keep that which is committed to your trust, avoiding profane and vain babblings and oppositions of what is falsely called knowledge;

21

Which some professing have strayed concerning the faith. Grace be with you. Amen.
