Genesis

Chapter 1

Summary

Genesis 1 recounts God's ordered creation of the world in six days. God speaks light into being and separates light from darkness; forms the expanse (sky), gathers the waters and brings forth dry land and vegetation; sets the sun, moon, and stars to govern day and night; fills the seas and skies with living creatures and populates the land with animals. Finally God creates mankind, male and female, in His image, gives them dominion over the earth, blesses them to be fruitful, and establishes the pattern of rest on the seventh day. The chapter emphasizes God's sovereign word, the goodness of the created order, and humanity's unique place within it.

1

In the beginning [1], God[3] created [2] the heavens and the earth.

2

The earth was formless and empty, darkness was over the surface of the deep, and the Spirit of God was brooding over the faces of the waters.

3

Then God said, "Let there be light," and there was light.

4

God saw that the light was good, and He divided the light from the darkness.

5

God called the light "day", and the darkness He called "night". And there was evening, and there was morning, Day one.

6

And God said, "Let there be an expanse within the waters to divide the waters from the waters."

7

So God made the expanse and divided the water under the expanse from the water above it. And it was so.

8

God called the expanse "Heavens". And there was evening, and there was morning, the second day.

9

And God said, "Let the water under the Heavens be gathered to one place, and let dry ground appear." And it was so.

10

God called the dry ground "land", and the gathered waters He called "seas". And God saw that it was good.

11

Then God said, "Let the earth sprout grass, herbs yielding seed, and fruit trees on the earth bearing fruit after their kind, with its seed in it." And it was so.

12

The earth brought forth grass, herbs yielding seed after their kind, and trees bearing fruit with its seed in it, each after its kind. And God saw that it was good.

13

And there was evening, and there was morning, the third day.

14

And God said, "Let there be lights in the expanse of the Heavens to divide the day from the night, and let them be for signs, for appointed seasons, and for days and years;

15

and let them be for lights in the expanse of the Heavens to give light on the earth." And it was so.

16

God made the two great lights: the greater light to master the day, and the lesser light to master the night; He made the stars also.

17

God set them in the expanse of the Heavens to give light on the earth,

18

to master the day and the night, and to divide the light from the darkness. And God saw that it was good.

19

And there was evening, and there was morning, the fourth day.

20

And God said, "Let the waters swarm with swarms of living creatures, and let birds fly above the earth across the expanse of the Heavens."

21

So God created the great sea monsters and every living thing that swarms, with which the waters teem according to their kind, and every winged bird according to its kind. And God saw that it was good.

22

God blessed them and said, "Be fruitful and increase in number and fill the waters in the seas, and let the birds increase on the earth."

23

And there was evening, and there was morning, the fifth day.

24

And God said, "Let the earth bring forth living creatures according to their kind: livestock, the creatures that crawl on the ground, and the wild animals, each after its kind." And it was so.

25

God made the wild animals after their kind, the livestock after their kind, and all the creatures that move along the ground after their kind. And God saw that it was good.

26

Then God said, "Let Us make man in Our image, according to Our likeness; and let them have dominion over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the earth, and over all the creatures that crawl upon the ground."

27

So God created man in His own image; in the image of God He created him; male and female He created them.

28

God blessed them and said to them, "Be fruitful and multiply; fill the earth and master it. Have dominion over the fish in the sea, the birds in the sky, and over every living thing that moves upon the earth."

29

Then God said, "Behold, I give you every herb yielding seed on the face of all the earth, and every tree that has fruit with seed in it; to you they shall be for sustenance.

30

And to all the animals of the earth, and to all the birds in the sky, and to all the creatures that move along the ground, everything that has the breath of life, I give every green herb for food." And it was so.

31

God saw all that He had made, and behold, it was very good. And it was evening, and it was morning, The Sixth Day.
