Genesis

Chapter 13

Summary

Genesis 13 tells of Abram and his nephew Lot returning from Egypt with great wealth. Their overgrown flocks lead to conflicts between their herdsmen, prompting Abram to suggest they separate. Lot chooses the fertile plain of the Jordan near Sodom, while Abram stays in Canaan, where God reaffirms His promise to give the land to Abram's countless descendants.

1

So Abram went up from Egypt to the Negev, he and his wife and all that he had, and Lot with him.

2

Abram was extremely heavy (Kaved) in livestock, in silver, and in gold.

3

He went on his journeys from the Negev as far as Bethel, to the place where his tent had been at the beginning, between Bethel and Ai,

4

to the place of the altar which he had made there at the beginning; and there Abram called on the name of the LORD.

5

Now Lot, who went with Abram, also had flocks and herds and tents.

6

But the land was not able to support them while they stayed together, for their possessions were so great that they were not able to stay together.

7

And there was strife between the herdsmen of Abram's livestock and the herdsmen of Lot's livestock. At that time the Canaanites and the Perizzites were living in the land.

8

So Abram said to Lot, "Please let there be no strife between me and you, nor between my herdsmen and your herdsmen, for we are brothers.

9

Is not the whole land before you? Please part company from me. If you go to the left, I will go to the right; if you go to the right, I will go to the left."

10

Lot lifted up his eyes and saw all the plain of the Jordan, that it was well watered everywhere, this was before the LORD destroyed Sodom and Gomorrah, like the Garden of the LORD, like the land of Egypt as you go toward Zoar.

11

So Lot chose for himself all the plain of the Jordan, and Lot journeyed eastward. Thus they separated from each other.

12

Abram lived in the land of Canaan, while Lot lived among the cities of the plain and pitched his tents near Sodom.

13

Now the men of Sodom were wicked, and sinners exceedingly against the LORD.

14

The LORD said to Abram, after Lot had separated from him, "Lift up your eyes now and look from the place where you are, northward and southward and eastward and westward;

15

for all the land which you see I will give to you and to your seed forever.

16

I will make your seed as the dust of the earth, so that if anyone can count the dust of the earth, then your seed also can be counted.

17

Arise, walk through the length and breadth of the land, for I will give it to you."

18

So Abram moved his tent and came and lived by the great trees of Mamre, which are in Hebron, and there he built an altar to the LORD.
