Genesis

Chapter 14

Summary

Genesis 14 describes a regional war in which four kings defeat five and capture Lot from Sodom. Hearing this, Abram arms his men, pursues the victorious kings, defeats them, and rescues Lot along with all the stolen goods. Upon his return, Abram gets blessed by Melchizedek, priest of God Most High, and refuses any reward from the king of Sodom.

1

And it was that in the days of Amraphel king of Shinar, Arioch king of Ellasar, Kedorlaomer king of Elam, and Tidal king of Goyim,

2

these kings made war against Bera king of Sodom, Birsha king of Gomorrah, Shinab king of Admah, Shemeber king of Zeboyim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar).

3

All these joined together in the Valley of Siddim (that is, the Salt Sea).

4

For twelve years they had served Kedorlaomer, but in the thirteenth year they rebelled.

5

In the fourteenth year, Kedorlaomer and the kings who were with him came and defeated the Rephaites in Ashteroth-Karnaim, the Zuzites in Ham, the Emites in Shaveh-Kiriathaim,

6

and the Horites in their hill country of Seir, as far as El-Paran near the wilderness.

7

Then they turned back and came to En-mishpat (that is, Kadesh), and they struck all the country of the Amalekites, and also the Amorites who were living in Hazezon-tamar.

8

Then the king of Sodom, the king of Gomorrah, the king of Admah, the king of Zeboyim, and the king of Bela (that is, Zoar) marched out and drew up their battle lines in the Valley of Siddim

9

against Kedorlaomer king of Elam, Tidal king of Goyim, Amraphel king of Shinar, and Arioch king of Ellasar, four kings against five.

10

Now the Valley of Siddim was full of bitumen pits; and as the kings of Sodom and Gomorrah fled, they fell into them, and the survivors fled to the hills.

11

The four kings seized all the goods of Sodom and Gomorrah and all their food; then they went away.

12

They also took Lot, the son of Abram's brother, and his possessions, for he was living in Sodom, and departed.

13

Then one who had escaped came and told Abram the Hebrew; for he was living by the great trees of Mamre the Amorite, brother of Eshkol and brother of Aner, and these were allied with Abram.

14

When Abram heard that his relative had been taken captive, he called out his 318 trained men born in his house, and went in pursuit as far as Dan.

15

During the night he divided his men against them, he and his servants, and struck them and pursued them as far as Hobah, which is on the left of Damascus.

16

He brought back all the goods, and also brought back his relative Lot and his possessions, together with the women and the people.

17

The king of Sodom went out to meet him in the Valley of Shaveh (that is, the King's Valley), after his return from defeating Kedorlaomer and the kings who were with him.

18

And Melchizedek, King of Righteousness, King of Salem, brought out bread and wine; he was the priest of God Most High (El Elyon).

19

He blessed him and said, "Blessed be Abram of God Most High, Possessor (Koneh) of heaven and earth;

20

and blessed be God Most High, who has delivered your enemies into your hand." And Abram gave him a tenth of everything.

21

The king of Sodom said to Abram, "Give me the people and take the goods for yourself."

22

But Abram said to the king of Sodom, "I have lifted my hand to the LORD, God Most High, Possessor of heaven and earth,

23

that I will take nothing, from a thread to a sandal-strap, of all that is yours, so that you will not say, 'I have made Abram rich.'

24

I will take nothing but what the young men have eaten, and the share of the men who went with me, Aner, Eshkol and Mamre; let them take their share."
