John

Chapter 2

Summary

The First Sign and the Purified Temple — The second chapter of John moves from the cosmic prologue to the concrete ministry of Jesus: as He performs His first "sign" at a wedding in Cana by turning water into wine. This miracle not only demonstrates His authority over creation but also serves as a symbolic replacement of the old Jewish purification rites with the new wine of the Kingdom. The scene then shifts dramatically to Jerusalem, where Jesus cleanses the Temple, driving out the money-changers and challenging the religious authorities. By identifying His own body as the true "Temple," Jesus points forward to His death and resurrection: the ultimate sign that will validate His divine authority.

1

On the third day, there was a wedding in Cana of Galilee, and the mother of Jesus was there.

2

Jesus also was invited, with His disciples, to the wedding.

3

When the wine ran out, the mother of Jesus said to Him, "They have no wine."

4

And Jesus said to her, "Woman, why are you telling Me this? My hour has not yet come."

5

His mother said to the servants, "Whatever He says to you, do it."

6

Now there were six stone water pots set there for the Jewish custom of purification, each containing two or three measures.

7

Jesus said to them, "Fill the water pots with water." And they filled them to the brim.

8

And He said to them, "Now draw some out and take it to the master of the banquet." And they took it.

9

When the master of the banquet tasted the water that had become wine, and did not know where it came from (though the servants who had drawn the water knew), the master of the banquet called the bridegroom,

10

and said to him, "Everyone serves the good wine first, and when the guests have drunk freely, then that which is inferior; but you have kept the good wine until now!"

11

This was the first of His signs that Jesus did in Cana of Galilee, and He revealed His glory, and His disciples believed in Him.

12

After this, He went down to Capernaum, together with His mother and His brothers and His disciples, and they stayed there for a few days.

13

The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.

14

And He found in the temple those who sold oxen and sheep and doves, and the money-changers sitting there.

15

And having made a whip of cords, He drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and the oxen; and He poured out the money of the changers and overturned the tables.

16

And to those who sold the doves He said, "Take these things out of here! Do not make My Father’s house a marketplace!"

17

His disciples remembered that it was written: "Zeal for Your house will consume me."

18

The Jews therefore answered and said to Him, "What sign do You show us for doing these things?"

19

Jesus answered and said to them, "Destroy this temple and in three days I will raise it up."

20

The Jews therefore said, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will You raise it up in three days?"

21

But He was speaking about the temple of His body.

22

When therefore He was raised from the dead, His disciples remembered that He had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

23

Now while He was in Jerusalem at the Passover during the feast, many believed in His name when they saw the signs that He was doing.

24

But Jesus did not entrust Himself to them, because He knew everyone,

25

and because He did not need anyone to testify about man; for He Himself knew what was in man.
