Matthew
Summary
The Gospel opens with a legal and royal genealogy that establishes Jesus’s Messianic credentials as the "Son of David" and the "Son of Abraham." This records the forty-two generations of the covenant people, structured into three distinct eras from Abraham to Christ. The focus then shifts to the supernatural origin of Jesus: as Joseph is visited by an angel in a dream, confirming that Mary’s conception is of the Holy Spirit and that the child is the fulfilment of the prophecy of "Immanuel," meaning "God with us." Joseph’s silent obedience ensures that Jesus, as the legal heir to David’s throne, is born into the world and named according to divine instruction.
This is the record of the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah, the son of David, the son of Abraham:
Abraham was the father of Isaac, Isaac was the father of Jacob, and Jacob was the father of Judah and his brothers;
Judah was the father of Perez and Zerah by Tamar, Perez was the father of Hezron, and Hezron was the father of Ram;
Ram was the father of Amminadab, Amminadab was the father of Nahshon, and Nahshon was the father of Salmon;
Salmon was the father of Boaz by Rahab, Boaz was the father of Obed by Ruth, and Obed was the father of Jesse;
Jesse was the father of David the king. David the king was the father of Solomon by her who had been the wife of Uriah;
Solomon was the father of Rehoboam, Rehoboam was the father of Abijah, and Abijah was the father of Asa;
Asa was the father of Jehoshaphat, Jehoshaphat was the father of Joram, and Joram was the father of Uzziah;
Uzziah was the father of Jotham, Jotham was the father of Ahaz, and Ahaz was the father of Hezekiah;
Hezekiah was the father of Manasseh, Manasseh was the father of Amon, and Amon was the father of Josiah;
Josiah was the father of Jeconiah and his brothers at the time they were carried away to Babylon;
And after they were brought to Babylon, Jeconiah was the father of Shealtiel, and Shealtiel was the father of Zerubbabel;
Zerubbabel was the father of Abiud, Abiud was the father of Eliakim, and Eliakim was the father of Azor;
Azor was the father of Zadok, Zadok was the father of Achim, and Achim was the father of Eliud;
Eliud was the father of Eleazar, Eleazar was the father of Matthan, and Matthan was the father of Jacob;
And Jacob was the father of Joseph the husband of Mary, of whom was born Jesus, who is called the Messiah.
So all the generations from Abraham to David are fourteen generations; from David until the carrying away into Babylon are fourteen generations; and from the carrying away into Babylon until the Messiah are fourteen generations.
Now the birth of Jesus the Messiah was as follows: After His mother Mary was pledged to be married to Joseph, before they came together, she was found to be with child through the Holy Spirit.
Then Joseph her husband, being a just man and not wanting to make her a public example, intended to put her away secretly.
But while he thought about these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, "Joseph, son of David, do not be afraid to take Mary as your wife; for that which is conceived in her is of the Holy Spirit."
"And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name JESUS, for He will save His people from their sins."
Now all this was done so that it might be fulfilled which was spoken by the Lord through the prophet, saying:
"Behold, the virgin shall be with child and shall bring forth a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel," which means, "God with us."
When Joseph woke up from his sleep, he did as the angel of the Lord had commanded him and took his wife home.
But he did not have sexual relations with her until she had brought forth her firstborn Son; and he called His name JESUS.
