Numbers

Chapter 1

Summary

Numbers Chapter 1 records the census of Israel at Mount Sinai, one year after the Exodus. At the LORD’s command, Moses and Aaron, with leaders from each tribe, counted all men twenty years old or more who were fit for military service. The total came to 601,550 men, excluding the Levites. This census was not merely for military organisation but to structure the nation as the army of the LORD, preparing them to enter and conquer the Promised Land. The meticulous listing by tribe and family emphasized that every individual had a precise place in the divine order of the camp.

1

The LORD spoke to Moses in the Tent of Meeting in the Desert of Sinai on the first day of the second month of the second year after the Israelites came out of Egypt. He said: [1]

2

"Take a census of the entire community of Israel by their clans and families, listing every man by name, one by one.

3

You and Aaron are to count everyone twenty years old or older who is able to serve in the army, and group them by their divisions.

4

One man from each tribe, a head of his family, must assist you.

5

These are the names of the men who will help you: Elizur son of Shedeur from Reuben;

6

Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai from Simeon;

7

Nahshon son of Amminadab from Judah;

8

Nethanel son of Zuar from Issachar;

9

Eliab son of Helon from Zebulun;

10

Elishama son of Ammihud from Ephraim and Gamaliel son of Pedahzur from Manasseh (the descendants of Joseph);

11

Abidan son of Gideoni from Benjamin;

12

Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai from Dan;

13

Pagiel son of Ochran from Asher;

14

Eliasaph son of Deuel from Gad;

15

Ahira son of Enan from Naphtali."

16

These were the chosen leaders of the community, the princes of their ancestral tribes and heads of the clans of Israel.

17

Moses and Aaron took these men who had been mentioned by name,

18

and they gathered the whole community together on the first day of the second month. The people registered themselves by their clans and families, and the men twenty years old or older were listed by name, one by one,

19

just as the LORD had commanded Moses. This is how he counted them in the Sinai wilderness:

20

From the tribe of Reuben (Israel's firstborn), the men were listed by name according to their clans and families. All those twenty years old or older who were fit for the army were counted.

21

The number from the tribe of Reuben was 46,500.

22

From the tribe of Simeon, the men were listed by name according to their clans and families. All those twenty years old or older who were fit for the army were counted.

23

The number from the tribe of Simeon was 59,300.

24

From the tribe of Gad, the men were listed by name according to their clans and families. All those twenty years old or older who were fit for the army were counted.

25

The number from the tribe of Gad was 45,650.

26

From the tribe of Judah, the men were listed by name according to their clans and families. All those twenty years old or older who were fit for the army were counted.

27

The number from the tribe of Judah was 74,600.

28

From the tribe of Issachar, the men were listed by name according to their clans and families. All those twenty years old or older who were fit for the army were counted.

29

The number from the tribe of Issachar was 54,400.

30

From the tribe of Zebulun, the men were listed by name according to their clans and families. All those twenty years old or older who were fit for the army were counted.

31

The number from the tribe of Zebulun was 57,400.

32

From the tribe of Ephraim (son of Joseph), the men were listed by name according to their clans and families. All those twenty years old or older who were fit for the army were counted.

33

The number from the tribe of Ephraim was 40,500.

34

From the tribe of Manasseh (son of Joseph), the men were listed by name according to their clans and families. All those twenty years old or older who were fit for the army were counted.

35

The number from the tribe of Manasseh was 32,200.

36

From the tribe of Benjamin, the men were listed by name according to their clans and families. All those twenty years old or older who were fit for the army were counted.

37

The number from the tribe of Benjamin was 35,400.

38

From the tribe of Dan, the men were listed by name according to their clans and families. All those twenty years old or older who were fit for the army were counted.

39

The number from the tribe of Dan was 62,700.

40

From the tribe of Asher, the men were listed by name according to their clans and families. All those twenty years old or older who were fit for the army were counted.

41

The number from the tribe of Asher was 41,500.

42

From the tribe of Naphtali, the men were listed by name according to their clans and families. All those twenty years old or older who were fit for the army were counted.

43

The number from the tribe of Naphtali was 53,400.

44

These were the men counted by Moses and Aaron and the twelve leaders of Israel, each of whom represented his own ancestral family.

45

All the Israelites twenty years old or older who were fit for the army were counted according to their families.

46

The total number of men was 603,550.

47

But the Levites were not included in this count with the other tribes.

48

The LORD had said to Moses:

49

"You must not count the tribe of Levi or include them in the census with the other Israelites.

50

"Instead, appoint the Levites to be in charge of the Tabernacle and all its equipment and everything belonging to it. They are to carry the Tabernacle and its equipment; they must care for it and camp around it."

51

Whenever the Tabernacle is moved, the Levites must take it down, and whenever it is set up, the Levites must do it. Anyone else who goes near it should be put to death.

52

The other Israelites are to camp in their own groups, each man under his own banner.

53

"The Levites must camp around the Tabernacle so that no divine anger falls on the community of Israel. The Levites are responsible for guarding the Tabernacle."

54

The Israelites did everything exactly as the LORD commanded Moses.
