Numbers

Chapter 2

Summary

Numbers Chapter 2 defines the precise layout of the Israelite camp as they gathered around the presence of God. Each tribe was assigned a specific location surrounding the Tabernacle, which remained at the very heart of the assembly. The camp was divided into four major groups, each under a leading tribe: Judah, Reuben, Ephraim, and Dan: and each with its own banner. This orderly and symbolic arrangement emphasized that God was the centre of their life and the source of their unity, even amidst the vast and challenging wilderness.

1

The LORD said to Moses and Aaron:

2

"The Israelites should camp around the Tent of Meeting, but at a distance from it. Each person must camp under their own family banner and standard."

3

On the east side, toward the sunrise, the division of Judah shall camp under its banner. The leader of the tribe of Judah is Nahshon son of Amminadab.

4

The number of men in his division is 74,600.

5

Next to them, the tribe of Issachar will camp. Their leader is Nethanel son of Zuar.

6

The number in his tribe is 54,400.

7

Then the tribe of Zebulun will camp. Their leader is Eliab son of Helon.

8

The number in his tribe is 57,400.

9

The total number of men in Judah's camp is 186,400. They will set out first.

10

On the south side, the division of Reuben shall camp under its banner. The leader of the tribe of Reuben is Elizur son of Shedeur.

11

The number in his division is 46,500.

12

Next to them, the tribe of Simeon will camp. Their leader is Shelumiel son of Zurishaddai.

13

The number in his tribe is 59,300.

14

Then the tribe of Gad will camp. Their leader is Eliasaph son of Deuel.

15

The number in his tribe is 45,650.

16

The total number of men in Reuben's camp is 151,450. They will set out second.

17

Then the Tent of Meeting and the camp of the Levites will set out in the middle of the other camps. They will travel in the same order as they camp, everyone in their place under their own banner.

18

On the west side, the division of Ephraim shall camp under its banner. The leader of the tribe of Ephraim is Elishama son of Ammihud.

19

The number in his division is 40,500.

20

Next to them, the tribe of Manasseh will camp. Their leader is Gamaliel son of Pedahzur.

21

The number in his tribe is 32,200.

22

Then the tribe of Benjamin will camp. Their leader is Abidan son of Gideoni.

23

The number in his tribe is 35,400.

24

The total number of men in Ephraim's camp is 108,100. They will set out third.

25

On the north side, the division of Dan shall camp under its banner. The leader of the tribe of Dan is Ahiezer son of Ammishaddai.

26

The number in his division is 62,700.

27

Next to them, the tribe of Asher will camp. Their leader is Pagiel son of Ochran.

28

The number in his tribe is 41,500.

29

Then the tribe of Naphtali will camp. Their leader is Ahira son of Enan.

30

The number in his tribe is 53,400.

31

The total number of men in Dan's camp is 157,600. They will set out last, under their own banners.

32

These were the Israelites counted by their families. The total number in all the camps was 603,550.

33

But the Levites were not counted with the other Israelites, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

34

The Israelites did everything just as the LORD commanded Moses. They camped under their own banners and set out with their own clans and families.
