Numbers

Chapter 8

Summary

Numbers Chapter 8 details the instructions for the golden lampstand and the formal cleansing of the Levites as they began their sacred service. Moses was to set apart the Levites before the whole assembly, symbolising their total dedication to God on behalf of the nation. The chapter also establishes the age requirements for Levitical service, stating that they were to work from age twenty-five to fifty. By purifying the Levites and their tasks, God ensured that the administration of His dwelling was handled with the highest level of ceremonial and spiritual integrity.

1

The LORD said to Moses:

2

"Speak to Aaron and tell him: 'When you set up the seven lamps, ensure they are positioned so their light shines forward, in front of the lampstand.' "

3

Aaron did this; he set up the lamps so they faced forward, just as the LORD had commanded Moses.

4

The lampstand was made of hammered gold, from its base to its decorative flowers, following the exact pattern the LORD had shown Moses.

5

The LORD said to Moses:

6

"Take the Levites from among the Israelites and cleanse them ceremonially.

7

To cleanse them, you must do this: sprinkle the water of purification on them; then have them shave their whole bodies and wash their clothes to make themselves pure.

8

They are to take a young bull with its grain offering of fine flour mixed with olive oil, and you must take a second young bull for a sin offering.

9

Bring the Levites to the front of the Tent of Meeting and assemble the whole community of Israel.

10

Present the Levites before the LORD, and the Israelites are to lay their hands on them.

11

Aaron shall then present the Levites before the LORD as a wave offering from the Israelites, so that they may be dedicated to doing the work of the LORD.

12

The Levites are to lay their hands on the heads of the bulls; then sacrifice one as a sin offering and the other as a burnt offering to the LORD, to make atonement for the Levites.

13

Have the Levites stand before Aaron and his sons and present them as a wave offering to the LORD.

14

In this way, you will set the Levites apart from the other Israelites, and the Levites will belong to me.

15

After you have cleansed them and presented them as a wave offering, the Levites may begin their work at the Tent of Meeting.

16

They are exclusively mine; I have taken them from among the Israelites in place of all the firstborn sons.

17

Every firstborn in Israel, whether human or animal, belongs to me. I set them apart for myself on the day I struck down all the firstborn in Egypt.

18

I have taken the Levites in place of all the firstborn sons in Israel.

19

From among the Israelites, I have given the Levites as a gift to Aaron and his sons to do the work for the Israelites at the Tent of Meeting and to make atonement for them, so that no plague will strike the Israelites when they approach the sanctuary."

20

Moses, Aaron, and the whole community of Israel did exactly what the LORD commanded Moses concerning the Levites.

21

The Levites purified themselves and washed their clothes. Then Aaron presented them as a wave offering before the LORD and made atonement for them to cleanse them.

22

After that, the Levites entered the Tent of Meeting to do their work under the supervision of Aaron and his sons. They did with the Levites exactly as the LORD had commanded Moses.

23

The LORD said to Moses:

24

"This is the regulation for the Levites: Men twenty-five years old or older shall come to take part in the work at the Tent of Meeting.

25

But at the age of fifty, they must retire from their regular work and serve no longer.

26

They may assist their brothers in the Tent of Meeting by performing various duties, but they are not to do the regular work themselves. This is how you are to assign the duties of the Levites."
