Psalms

Chapter 3

Summary

Psalm 3 is traditionally a morning psalm, composed by David as he fled from his son Absalom. In the face of many enemies who claim that "God will not deliver him," David finds peace and confidence in the LORD as his shield and the "lifter" of his head. He declares that he can sleep and wake in safety because the LORD sustains him. The psalm is a raw and honest plea for deliverance, ending with the confident assurance that "salvation belongs to the LORD." It stands as a model of trusting God during even the most perilous and personal betrayals.

1

O LORD, how my enemies have increased! Many are they who rise up against me.

2

Many are saying of my soul, "There is no help for him in God." Selah.

3

But you, O LORD, are a shield around me, my glory, and the one who lifts up my head.

4

I cried out to the LORD with my voice, and he answered me from his holy hill. Selah.

5

I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the LORD sustains me.

6

I will not be afraid of ten thousands of people who have set themselves against me on every side.

7

Arise, O LORD! Save me, O my God! For you have struck all my enemies on the cheek; you have broken the teeth of the wicked.

8

Salvation belongs to the LORD; your blessing be upon your people. Selah.
