1 Corinthians

Chapter 14
1
Phonetic (Greek): Diokete ten agapen, zeloyte de ta pneumatika, mallon de hina propheteyete.
Edified Edition (EDE)Pursue love, and desire spiritual gifts, but especially that you may prophesy.

2
Phonetic (Greek): ho gar lalon glossῃ oyk anthropois lalei ⸀alla theῷ, oydeis gar akoyei, pneymati de lalei mysteria·
Edified Edition (EDE)For he who speaks in a tongue does not speak to men but to God, for no one understands him; however, in the spirit he speaks mysteries.

3
Phonetic (Greek): ho de propheteyon anthropois lalei oikodomen kai paraklesin kai paramythian.
Edified Edition (EDE)But he who prophesies speaks edification and exhortation and comfort to men.

4
Phonetic (Greek): ho lalon glossῃ heauton oikodomei· ho de propheteyon ekklesian oikodomei.
Edified Edition (EDE)He who speaks in a tongue edifies himself, but he who prophesies edifies the church.

5
Phonetic (Greek): thelo de pantas hymas lalein glossais, mallon de hina propheteyete· meizon ⸀de ho propheteyon e ho lalon glossais, ektos ei me ⸀diermeneyῃ, hina he ekklesia oikodomen labῃ.
Edified Edition (EDE)I wish you all spoke with tongues, but even more that you prophesied; for he who prophesies is greater than he who speaks with tongues, unless indeed he interprets, that the church may receive edification.

6
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀Nyn de, adelphoi, ean eltho pros hymas glossais lalon, ti hymas opheleso, ean me hymin laleso e en apokalypsei e en gnosei e en propheteiᾳ e en didachῇ;
Edified Edition (EDE)But now, brothers, if I come to you speaking with tongues, what shall I profit you unless I speak to you either by revelation, by knowledge, by prophesying, or by teaching?

⸀Νῦν δέ, ἀδελφοί, ἐὰν ἔλθω πρὸς ὑμᾶς γλώσσαις λαλῶν, τί ὑμᾶς ὠφελήσω, ἐὰν μὴ ὑμῖν λαλήσω ἢ ἐν ἀποκαλύψει ἢ ἐν γνώσει ἢ ἐν προφητείᾳ ἢ ἐν διδαχῇ;

7
Phonetic (Greek): homos ta apsycha phonen didonta, eite aylos eite kithara, ean diastolen tois phthongois me ⸀dῷ, pos gnosthesetai to ayloymenon e to kitharizomenon;
Edified Edition (EDE)Even things without life, whether flute or harp, when they make a sound, unless they make a distinction in the sounds, how will it be known what is piped or played?

ὅμως τὰ ἄψυχα φωνὴν διδόντα, εἴτε αὐλὸς εἴτε κιθάρα, ἐὰν διαστολὴν τοῖς φθόγγοις μὴ ⸀δῷ, πῶς γνωσθήσεται τὸ αὐλούμενον ἢ τὸ κιθαριζόμενον;

8
Phonetic (Greek): kai gar ean adelon ⸂phonen salpinx⸃ dῷ, tis paraskeuasetai eis polemon;
Edified Edition (EDE)For if the trumpet makes an uncertain sound, who will prepare for battle?

καὶ γὰρ ἐὰν ἄδηλον ⸂φωνὴν σάλπιγξ⸃ δῷ, τίς παρασκευάσεται εἰς πόλεμον;

9
Phonetic (Greek): ohytos kai hymeis dia tes glosses ean me eysemon logon dote, pos gnosthesetai to laloymenon; esesthe gar eis aera laloyntes.
Edified Edition (EDE)So likewise you, unless you utter by the tongue words easy to understand, how will it be known what is spoken? For you will be speaking into the air.

10
Phonetic (Greek): tosayta ei tychoi gene phonon ⸀eisin en kosmῳ, kai ⸀oyden aphonon·
Edified Edition (EDE)There are, it may be, so many kinds of languages in the world, and none of them is without significance.

11
Phonetic (Greek): ean oyn me eido ten dynamin tes phones, esomai tῷ laloynti barbaros kai ho lalon en emoi barbaros.
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore, if I do not know the meaning of the language, I shall be a foreigner to him who speaks, and he who speaks will be a foreigner to me.

12
Phonetic (Greek): ohytos kai hymeis, epei zelotai este pneumaton, pros ten oikodomen tes ekklesias zeteite hina perisseyete.
Edified Edition (EDE)Even so you, since you are zealous for spiritual gifts, let it be for the edification of the church that you seek to excel.

13
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀Dio ho lalon glossῃ proseuchestho hina diermeneyῃ.
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore let him who speaks in a tongue pray that he may interpret.

14
Phonetic (Greek): ean gar proseychomai glossῃ, to pneyma mou proseychetai, ho de noys mou akarpos estin.
Edified Edition (EDE)For if I pray in a tongue, my spirit prays, but my understanding is unfruitful.

15
Phonetic (Greek): ti oyn estin; proseyxomai tῷ pneymati, proseyxomai de kai tῷ noi· psalo tῷ pneymati, psalo de kai tῷ noi·
Edified Edition (EDE)What is the conclusion then? I will pray with the spirit, and I will also pray with the understanding. I will sing with the spirit, and I will also sing with the understanding.

16
Phonetic (Greek): epei ean ⸀eylogῇs ⸀pneymati, ho anapleron ton topon toy idiotou pos erei to Ἀmen epi tῇ sῇ eycharistiᾳ; epeide ti legeis oyk oiden·
Edified Edition (EDE)Otherwise, if you bless with the spirit, how will he who occupies the place of the uninformed say "Amen" at your giving of thanks, since he does not understand what you say?

17
Phonetic (Greek): sy men gar kalos eycharisteis, allʼ ho heteros oyk oikodomeitai.
Edified Edition (EDE)For you indeed give thanks well, but the other is not edified.

18
Phonetic (Greek): eycharisto tῷ ⸀theῷ, panton hymon mallon ⸀glossais ⸀lalo·
Edified Edition (EDE)I thank my God I speak with tongues more than you all;

19
Phonetic (Greek): alla en ekklesiᾳ thelo pente logous ⸂tῷ noi⸃ mou lalesai, hina kai allous katecheso, e myrious logous en glossῃ.
Edified Edition (EDE)yet in the church I would rather speak five words with my understanding, that I may teach others also, than ten thousand words in a tongue.

20
Phonetic (Greek): Ἀdelphoi, me paidia ginesthe tais phresin, alla tῇ kakiᾳ nepiazete, tais de phresin teleioi ginesthe.
Edified Edition (EDE)Brothers, do not be children in understanding; however, in malice be babes, but in understanding be mature.

21
Phonetic (Greek): en tῷ nomῳ gegraptai hoti Ἐn heteroglossois kai en cheilesin ⸀heteron laleso tῷ laῷ toytῳ, kai oydʼ ohytos eisakoysontai mou, legei kyrios.
Edified Edition (EDE)In the law it is written: "With men of other tongues and other lips I will speak to this people; And yet, for all that, they will not hear Me," says the Lord.

22
Phonetic (Greek): hoste ahi glossai eis semeion eisin oy tois pisteyousin alla tois apistois, he de propheteia oy tois apistois alla tois pisteyousin.
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore tongues are for a sign, not to those who believe but to unbelievers; but prophesying is not for unbelievers but for those who believe.

23
Phonetic (Greek): ean oyn synelthῃ he ekklesia hole epi to ayto kai pantes ⸂lalosin glossais⸃, eiselthosin de idiotai e apistoi, oyk eroysin hoti mainesthe;
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore if the whole church comes together in one place, and all speak with tongues, and there come in those who are uninformed or unbelievers, will they not say that you are out of your mind?

ἐὰν οὖν συνέλθῃ ἡ ἐκκλησία ὅλη ἐπὶ τὸ αὐτὸ καὶ πάντες ⸂λαλῶσιν γλώσσαις⸃, εἰσέλθωσιν δὲ ἰδιῶται ἢ ἄπιστοι, οὐκ ἐροῦσιν ὅτι μαίνεσθε;

24
Phonetic (Greek): ean de pantes propheteyosin, eiselthῃ de tis apistos e idiotes, elenchetai hypo panton, anakrinetai hypo panton,
Edified Edition (EDE)But if all prophesy, and an unbeliever or an uninformed person comes in, he is convinced by all, he is judged by all.

25
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀ta krypta tes kardias aytoy phanera ginetai, kai ohytos peson epi prosopon proskynesei tῷ theῷ, apangellon hoti ⸂Ὄntos ho theos⸃ en hymin estin.
Edified Edition (EDE)And thus the secrets of his heart are revealed; and so, falling down on his face, he will worship God and report that God is truly among you.

26
Phonetic (Greek): Ti oyn estin, adelphoi; hotan synerchesthe, ⸀hekastos psalmon echei, didachen echei, ⸂apokalypsin echei, glossan⸃ echei, hermeneian echei· panta pros oikodomen ginestho.
Edified Edition (EDE)How is it then, brothers? Whenever you come together, each of you has a psalm, has a teaching, has a tongue, has a revelation, has an interpretation. Let all things be done for edification.

27
Phonetic (Greek): eite glossῃ tis lalei, kata dyo e to pleiston treis, kai ana meros, kai ehis diermeneueto·
Edified Edition (EDE)If anyone speaks in a tongue, let there be two or at most three, each in turn, and let one interpret.

Edified Edition (EDE)But if there is no interpreter, let him keep silent in church, and let him speak to himself and to God.

29
Phonetic (Greek): prophetai de dyo e treis laleitosan, kai ohi alloi diakrinetosan·
Edified Edition (EDE)Let two or three prophets speak, and let the others judge.

30
Phonetic (Greek): ean de allῳ apokalyphthῇ kathemenῳ, ho protos sigato.
Edified Edition (EDE)But if anything is revealed to another who sits by, let the first keep silent.

31
Phonetic (Greek): dynasthe gar kathʼ hena pantes propheteyein, hina pantes manthanosin kai pantes parakalontai
Edified Edition (EDE)For you can all prophesy one by one, that all may learn and all may be encouraged.

32
Phonetic (Greek): (kai pneymata propheton prophetais hypotassetai,
Edified Edition (EDE)And the spirits of the prophets are subject to the prophets.

33
Phonetic (Greek): oy gar estin akatastasias ho theos alla eirenes), hos en pasais tais ekklesiais ton hagion.
Edified Edition (EDE)For God is not the author of confusion but of peace, as in all the churches of the saints.

34
Phonetic (Greek): Ahi ⸀gynaikes en tais ekklesiais sigatosan, oy gar ⸀epitrepetai aytais lalein· alla ⸀hypotassesthosan, kathos kai ho nomos legei.
Edified Edition (EDE)Let your women keep silent in the churches, for they are not permitted to speak; but they are to be submissive, as the law also says.

Edified Edition (EDE)And if they want to learn anything, let them ask their own husbands at home; for it is shameful for women to speak in church.

36
Phonetic (Greek): e aphʼ hymon ho logos toy theoy exelthen, e eis hymas monous katentesen;
Edified Edition (EDE)Or did the word of God come originally from you? Or did it come to you only?

ἢ ἀφʼ ὑμῶν ὁ λόγος τοῦ θεοῦ ἐξῆλθεν, ἢ εἰς ὑμᾶς μόνους κατήντησεν;

37
Phonetic (Greek): Ei tis dokei prophetes einai e pneumatikos, epiginosketo ha grapho hymin hoti kyriou ⸀estin·
Edified Edition (EDE)If anyone thinks himself to be a prophet or spiritual, let him acknowledge that the things which I write to you are the commandments of the Lord.

38
Phonetic (Greek): ei de tis agnoei, ⸀agnoeitai.
Edified Edition (EDE)But if anyone is ignorant, let him be ignorant.

39
Phonetic (Greek): hoste, adelphoi ⸀mou, zeloyte to propheteyein, kai to lalein ⸂me kolyete glossais⸃·
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore, brothers, desire earnestly to prophesy, and do not forbid to speak with tongues.

40
Phonetic (Greek): panta ⸀de eyschemonos kai kata taxin ginestho.
Edified Edition (EDE)Let all things be done decently and in order.
