1 Corinthians

Chapter 7
1
Phonetic (Greek): Peri de hon ⸀egrapsate, kalon anthropῳ gynaikos me haptesthai·
Edified Edition (EDE)Now concerning the things of which you wrote: It is good for a man not to touch a woman.

2
Phonetic (Greek): dia de tas porneias hekastos ten heautoy gynaika echeto, kai hekaste ton idion andra echeto.
Edified Edition (EDE)Nevertheless, because of sexual immorality, let each man have his own wife, and let each woman have her own husband.

3
Phonetic (Greek): tῇ gynaiki ho aner ten ⸀opheilen apodidoto, homoios de kai he gyne tῷ andri.
Edified Edition (EDE)Let the husband render to his wife the affection due her, and likewise also the wife to her husband.

4
Phonetic (Greek): he gyne toy idiou somatos oyk exousiazei alla ho aner· homoios de kai ho aner toy idiou somatos oyk exousiazei alla he gyne.
Edified Edition (EDE)The wife does not have authority over her own body, but the husband does. And likewise the husband does not have authority over his own body, but the wife does.

5
Phonetic (Greek): me apostereite allelous, ei meti an ek symphonou pros kairon hina ⸀scholasete ⸀tῇ proseuchῇ kai palin epi to ayto ⸀ete, hina me peirazῃ hymas ho Satanas dia ten akrasian hymon.
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not deprive one another except with consent for a time, that you may give yourselves to fasting and prayer; and come together again so that Satan does not tempt you because of your lack of self-control.

6
Phonetic (Greek): toyto de lego kata syngnomen, oy katʼ epitagen.
Edified Edition (EDE)But I say this as a concession, not as a commandment.

7
Phonetic (Greek): thelo ⸀de pantas anthropous einai hos kai emauton· alla hekastos idion ⸂echei charisma⸃ ek theoy, ⸀ho men ohytos, ⸁ho de ohytos.
Edified Edition (EDE)For I could wish that all men were even as I myself. But each one has his own gift from God, one in this manner and another in that.

8
Phonetic (Greek): Lego de tois agamois kai tais cherais, kalon ⸀aytois ean meinosin hos kago·
Edified Edition (EDE)But I say to the unmarried and to the widows: It is good for them if they remain even as I am;

9
Phonetic (Greek): ei de oyk enkrateyontai, gamesatosan, kreitton gar estin ⸀gamesai e pyroysthai.
Edified Edition (EDE)but if they cannot exercise self-control, let them marry. For it is better to marry than to burn with passion.

10
Phonetic (Greek): Tois de gegamekosin parangello, oyk ego alla ho kyrios, gynaika apo andros me choristhenai—
Edified Edition (EDE)Now to the married I command, yet not I but the Lord: A wife is not to depart from her husband.

11
Phonetic (Greek): ean de kai choristhῇ, meneto agamos e tῷ andri katallageto— kai andra gynaika me aphienai.
Edified Edition (EDE)But even if she does depart, let her remain unmarried or be reconciled to her husband. And a husband is not to divorce his wife.

12
Phonetic (Greek): Tois de loipois ⸂lego ego⸃, oych ho kyrios· ei tis adelphos gynaika echei apiston, kai ahyte syneudokei oikein metʼ aytoy, me aphieto ayten·
Edified Edition (EDE)But to the rest I, not the Lord, say: If any brother has a wife who does not believe, and she is willing to live with him, let him not divorce her.

13
Phonetic (Greek): kai gyne ⸂ei tis⸃ echei andra apiston, kai ⸀ohytos syneudokei oikein metʼ aytes, me aphieto ⸂ton andra⸃.
Edified Edition (EDE)And a woman who has a husband who does not believe, if he is willing to live with her, let her not divorce him.

14
Phonetic (Greek): hegiastai gar ho aner ho apistos en tῇ gynaiki, kai hegiastai he gyne he apistos en tῷ ⸀adelphῷ· epei ara ta tekna hymon akatharta estin, nyn de hagia estin.
Edified Edition (EDE)For the unbelieving husband is sanctified by the wife, and the unbelieving wife is sanctified by the husband; otherwise your children would be unclean, but now they are holy.

Edified Edition (EDE)But if the unbeliever departs, let him depart; a brother or a sister is not under bondage in such cases. But God has called us to peace.

16
Phonetic (Greek): ti gar oidas, gynai, ei ton andra soseis; e ti oidas, aner, ei ten gynaika soseis;
Edified Edition (EDE)For how do you know, O wife, whether you will save your husband? Or how do you know, O husband, whether you will save your wife?

τί γὰρ οἶδας, γύναι, εἰ τὸν ἄνδρα σώσεις; ἢ τί οἶδας, ἄνερ, εἰ τὴν γυναῖκα σώσεις;

17
Phonetic (Greek): Ei me hekastῳ hos ⸀emerisen ho ⸀kyrios, hekaston hos kekleken ho ⸀theos, ohytos peripateito· kai ohytos en tais ekklesiais pasais diatassomai.
Edified Edition (EDE)But as God has distributed to each one, as the Lord has called each one, so let him walk. And so I ordain in all the churches.

18
Phonetic (Greek): peritetmemenos tis eklethe; me epispastho· en akrobystiᾳ ⸂kekletai tis⸃; me peritemnestho.
Edified Edition (EDE)Was anyone called while circumcised? Let him not become uncircumcised. Was anyone called while uncircumcised? Let him not be circumcised.

19
Phonetic (Greek): he peritome oyden estin, kai he akrobystia oyden estin, alla teresis entolon theoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)Circumcision is nothing and uncircumcision is nothing, but keeping the commandments of God is what matters.

20
Phonetic (Greek): hekastos en tῇ klesei he eklethe en taytῃ meneto.
Edified Edition (EDE)Let each one remain in the same calling in which he was called.

21
Phonetic (Greek): Doylos eklethes; me soi meleto· allʼ ei kai dynasai eleytheros genesthai, mallon chresai.
Edified Edition (EDE)Were you called while a slave? Do not be concerned about it; but if you can be made free, rather use it.

22
Phonetic (Greek): ho gar en kyriῳ kletheis doylos apeleytheros kyriou estin· ⸀homoios ho eleytheros kletheis doylos estin Christoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)For he who is called in the Lord while a slave is the Lord’s freedman. Likewise he who is called while free is Christ’s slave.

23
Phonetic (Greek): times egorasthete· me ginesthe doyloi anthropon.
Edified Edition (EDE)You were bought at a price; do not become slaves of men.

Edified Edition (EDE)Brothers, let each one remain with God in that state in which he was called.

25
Phonetic (Greek): Peri de ton parthenon epitagen kyriou oyk echo, gnomen de didomi hos eleemenos hypo kyriou pistos einai.
Edified Edition (EDE)Now concerning virgins: I have no commandment from the Lord; yet I give judgement as one whom the Lord in His mercy has made trustworthy.

26
Phonetic (Greek): nomizo oyn toyto kalon hyparchein dia ten enestosan ananken, hoti kalon anthropῳ to ohytos einai.
Edified Edition (EDE)I suppose therefore that this is good because of the present distress, that it is good for a man to remain as he is:

27
Phonetic (Greek): dedesai gynaiki; me zetei lysin· lelysai apo gynaikos; me zetei gynaika·
Edified Edition (EDE)Are you bound to a wife? Do not seek to be loosed. Are you loosed from a wife? Do not seek a wife.

28
Phonetic (Greek): ean de kai ⸀gamesῃs, oych hemartes. kai ean gemῃ he parthenos, oych hemarten. thlipsin de tῇ sarki hexousin ohi toioytoi, ego de hymon pheidomai.
Edified Edition (EDE)But even if you do marry, you have not sinned; and if a virgin marries, she has not sinned. Nevertheless such will have trouble in the flesh, but I would spare you.

29
Phonetic (Greek): toyto de phemi, adelphoi, ho kairos synestalmenos ⸂estin· to loipon⸃ hina kai ohi echontes gynaikas hos me echontes osin,
Edified Edition (EDE)But this I say, brothers, the time is short, so that from now on even those who have wives should be as though they had none,

30
Phonetic (Greek): kai ohi klaiontes hos me klaiontes, kai ohi chairontes hos me chairontes, kai ohi agorazontes hos me katechontes,
Edified Edition (EDE)those who weep as though they did not weep, those who rejoice as though they did not rejoice, those who buy as though they did not possess,

31
Phonetic (Greek): kai ohi chromenoi ⸂ton kosmon⸃ hos me katachromenoi· paragei gar to schema toy kosmou toytou.
Edified Edition (EDE)and those who use this world as not misusing it. For the form of this world is passing away.

32
Phonetic (Greek): Thelo de hymas amerimnous einai. ho agamos merimnᾷ ta toy kyriou, pos ⸀aresῃ tῷ kyriῳ·
Edified Edition (EDE)But I want you to be without care. He who is unmarried cares for the things of the Lord, how he may please the Lord.

33
Phonetic (Greek): ho de gamesas merimnᾷ ta toy kosmou, pos ⸀aresῃ tῇ gynaiki,
Edified Edition (EDE)But he who is married cares for the things of the world, how he may please his wife.

34
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀kai memeristai. kai he gyne ⸂he agamos⸃ kai he ⸀parthenos merimnᾷ ta toy kyriou, hina e hagia kai ⸀tῷ somati kai ⸁tῷ pneymati· he de gamesasa merimnᾷ ta toy kosmou, pos ⸀aresῃ tῷ andri.
Edified Edition (EDE)There is a difference between a wife and a virgin. The unmarried woman cares for the things of the Lord, that she may be holy both in body and in spirit. But she who is married cares for the things of the world, how she may please her husband.

35
Phonetic (Greek): toyto de pros to hymon ayton ⸀symphoron lego, oych hina brochon hymin epibalo, alla pros to eyschemon kai ⸀eyparedron tῷ kyriῳ aperispastos.
Edified Edition (EDE)And this I say for your own profit, not that I may put a snare on you, but for what is proper, and that you may serve the Lord without distraction.

36
Phonetic (Greek): Ei de tis aschemonein epi ten parthenon aytoy nomizei ean e hyperakmos, kai ohytos opheilei ginesthai, ho thelei poieito· oych hamartanei· gameitosan.
Edified Edition (EDE)But if any man thinks he is behaving improperly toward his virgin, if she is past the flower of youth, and thus it must be, let him do what he wills; he does not sin; let them marry.

37
Phonetic (Greek): hos de hesteken ⸂en tῇ kardiᾳ aytoy hedraios⸃ me echon ananken, exousian de echei peri toy idiou thelematos, kai toyto kekriken en tῇ ⸂idiᾳ kardiᾳ⸃, ⸀terein ten heautoy parthenon, kalos ⸀poiesei·
Edified Edition (EDE)Nevertheless he who stands steadfast in his heart, having no necessity, but has power over his own will, and has so determined in his heart that he will keep his virgin, does well.

38
Phonetic (Greek): hoste kai ho ⸀gamizon ⸂ten parthenon heautoy⸃ kalos poiei, ⸂kai ho⸃ me ⸁gamizon kreisson ⸀poiesei.
Edified Edition (EDE)So then he who gives her in marriage does well, but he who does not give her in marriage does better.

39
Phonetic (Greek): Gyne ⸀dedetai ephʼ hoson chronon zῇ ho aner aytes· ean ⸀de koimethῇ ho aner, eleuthera estin ho thelei gamethenai, monon en kyriῳ·
Edified Edition (EDE)A wife is bound by law as long as her husband lives; but if her husband dies, she is at liberty to be married to whom she wills, only in the Lord.

40
Phonetic (Greek): makariotera de estin ean ohytos meinῃ, kata ten emen gnomen, doko ⸀de kago pneyma theoy echein.
Edified Edition (EDE)But she is happier if she remains as she is, according to my judgement, and I think I also have the Spirit of God.
