Chapter 2
1
Phonetic (Greek): Teknia mou, tayta grapho hymin hina me hamartete. kai ean tis hamartῃ, parakleton echomen pros ton patera Ἰesoyn Christon dikaion,
Edified Edition (EDE)My little children, these things I write to you, that you sin not. And if any person sins, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous:

2
Phonetic (Greek): kai aytos hilasmos estin peri ton hamartion hemon, oy peri ton hemeteron de monon alla kai peri holou toy kosmou.
Edified Edition (EDE)And He is the propitiation for our sins: and not for ours only, but also for the sins of the whole world.

3
Phonetic (Greek): Kai en toytῳ ginoskomen hoti egnokamen ayton, ean tas entolas aytoy teromen.
Edified Edition (EDE)And hereby we do know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments.

4
Phonetic (Greek): ho legon ⸀hoti Ἔgnoka ayton kai tas entolas aytoy me teron pseystes estin, kai en toytῳ he aletheia oyk estin·
Edified Edition (EDE)He who says, "I know Him," and keeps not His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

5
Phonetic (Greek): hos dʼ an terῇ aytoy ton logon, alethos en toytῳ he agape toy theoy teteleiotai. en toytῳ ginoskomen hoti en aytῷ esmen·
Edified Edition (EDE)But whoever keeps His word, in him truly is the love of God perfected: hereby know we that we are in Him.

6
Phonetic (Greek): ho legon en aytῷ menein opheilei kathos ekeinos periepatesen kai ⸀aytos peripatein.
Edified Edition (EDE)He who says he remains in Him ought himself also so to walk, even as He walked.

7
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀Ἀgapetoi, oyk entolen kainen grapho hymin, allʼ entolen palaian hen eichete apʼ arches· he entole he palaia estin ho logos hon ⸀ekoysate.
Edified Edition (EDE)Brothers, I write no new commandment to you, but an old commandment which you had from the beginning. The old commandment is the word which you have heard from the beginning.

8
Phonetic (Greek): palin entolen kainen grapho hymin, ho estin alethes en aytῷ kai en hymin, hoti he skotia paragetai kai to phos to alethinon ede phainei.
Edified Edition (EDE)Again, a new commandment I write to you, which thing is true in Him and in you: because the darkness is past, and the true light now shines.

9
Phonetic (Greek): ho legon en tῷ photi einai kai ton adelphon aytoy mison en tῇ skotiᾳ estin heos arti.
Edified Edition (EDE)He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness even until now.

10
Phonetic (Greek): ho agapon ton adelphon aytoy en tῷ photi menei, kai skandalon en aytῷ oyk estin·
Edified Edition (EDE)He who loves his brother remains in the light, and there is no occasion of stumbling in him.

11
Phonetic (Greek): ho de mison ton adelphon aytoy en tῇ skotiᾳ estin kai en tῇ skotiᾳ peripatei, kai oyk oiden poy hypagei, hoti he skotia etyphlosen toys ophthalmoys aytoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)But he who hates his brother is in darkness, and walks in darkness, and knows not where he goes, because that darkness has blinded his eyes.

12
Phonetic (Greek): Grapho hymin, teknia, hoti apheontai hymin ahi hamartiai dia to onoma aytoy·
Edified Edition (EDE)I write to you, little children, because your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake.

13
Phonetic (Greek): grapho hymin, pateres, hoti egnokate ton apʼ arches· grapho hymin, neaniskoi, hoti nenikekate ton poneron.
Edified Edition (EDE)I write to you, fathers, because you have known Him who is from the beginning. I write to you, young people, because you have overcome the wicked one. I write to you, little children, because you have known the Father.

14
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀egrapsa hymin, paidia, hoti egnokate ton patera· egrapsa hymin, pateres, hoti egnokate ton apʼ arches· egrapsa hymin, neaniskoi, hoti ischyroi este kai ho logos toy theoy en hymin menei kai nenikekate ton poneron.
Edified Edition (EDE)I have written to you, fathers, because you have known Him who is from the beginning. I have written to you, young people, because you are strong, and the word of God remains in you, and you have overcome the wicked one.

15
Phonetic (Greek): Me agapate ton kosmon mede ta en tῷ kosmῳ. ean tis agapᾷ ton kosmon, oyk estin he agape toy patros en aytῷ·
Edified Edition (EDE)Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any person loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him.

16
Phonetic (Greek): hoti pan to en tῷ kosmῳ, he epithymia tes sarkos kai he epithymia ton ophthalmon kai he alazoneia toy biou, oyk estin ek toy patros, alla ek toy kosmou estin·
Edified Edition (EDE)For all that is in the world, the lust of the flesh, and the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life, is not of the Father, but is of the world.

17
Phonetic (Greek): kai ho kosmos paragetai kai he epithymia aytoy, ho de poion to thelema toy theoy menei eis ton aiona.
Edified Edition (EDE)And the world passes away, and its lust: but he who does the will of God remains forever.

18
Phonetic (Greek): Paidia, eschate hora estin, kai kathos ekoysate ⸀hoti antichristos erchetai, kai nyn antichristoi polloi gegonasin· hothen ginoskomen hoti eschate hora estin.
Edified Edition (EDE)Little children, it is the last time: and as you have heard that antichrist shall come, even now are there many antichrists; by which we know that it is the last time.

19
Phonetic (Greek): ex hemon exelthan, allʼ oyk esan ex hemon· ei gar ⸂ex hemon esan⸃, memenekeisan an methʼ hemon· allʼ hina phanerothosin hoti oyk eisin pantes ex hemon.
Edified Edition (EDE)They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would no doubt have continued with us: but they went out, that they might be made manifest that they were not all of us.

20
Phonetic (Greek): kai hymeis chrisma echete apo toy hagiou ⸀kai oidate ⸀pantes·
Edified Edition (EDE)But you have an unction from the Holy One, and you know all things.

21
Phonetic (Greek): oyk egrapsa hymin hoti oyk oidate ten aletheian, allʼ hoti oidate ayten, kai hoti pan pseydos ek tes aletheias oyk estin.
Edified Edition (EDE)I have not written to you because you know not the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

22
Phonetic (Greek): tis estin ho pseystes ei me ho arnoymenos hoti Ἰesoys oyk estin ho christos; ohytos estin ho antichristos, ho arnoymenos ton patera kai ton yhion.
Edified Edition (EDE)Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist, who denies the Father and the Son.

23
Phonetic (Greek): pas ho arnoymenos ton yhion oyde ton patera echei· ⸂ho homologon ton yhion kai ton patera echei⸃.
Edified Edition (EDE)Whoever denies the Son, the same has not the Father: but he who acknowledges the Son has the Father also.

24
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀hymeis ho ekoysate apʼ arches, en hymin meneto· ean en hymin meinῃ ho apʼ arches ekoysate, kai hymeis en tῷ yhiῷ kai en tῷ patri meneite.
Edified Edition (EDE)Let that therefore remain in you, which you have heard from the beginning. If that which you have heard from the beginning shall remain in you, you also shall continue in the Son, and in the Father.

25
Phonetic (Greek): kai ahyte estin he epangelia hen aytos epengeilato hemin, ten zoen ten aionion.
Edified Edition (EDE)And this is the promise that He has promised us, even eternal life.

26
Phonetic (Greek): Tayta egrapsa hymin peri ton planonton hymas.
Edified Edition (EDE)These things have I written to you concerning those who seduce you.

27
Phonetic (Greek): kai hymeis to chrisma ho elabete apʼ aytoy ⸂menei en hymin⸃, kai oy chreian echete hina tis didaskῃ hymas· allʼ hos to ⸀aytoy chrisma didaskei hymas peri panton, kai alethes estin kai oyk estin pseydos, kai kathos edidaxen hymas, ⸀menete en aytῷ.
Edified Edition (EDE)But the anointing which you have received of Him remains in you, and you need not that any person teach you: but as the same anointing teaches you of all things, and is truth, and is no lie, and even as it has taught you, you shall remain in Him.

28
Phonetic (Greek): Kai nyn, teknia, menete en aytῷ, hina ⸀ean phanerothῇ ⸀schomen parresian kai me aischynthomen apʼ aytoy en tῇ parousiᾳ aytoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)And now, little children, remain in Him; that, when He shall appear, we may have confidence, and not be ashamed before Him at His coming.

29
Phonetic (Greek): ean eidete hoti dikaios estin, ginoskete ⸀hoti pas ho poion ten dikaiosynen ex aytoy gegennetai.
Edified Edition (EDE)If you know that He is righteous, you know that every person who does righteousness is born of Him.
