1 John

Chapter 3
1
Phonetic (Greek): idete potapen agapen dedoken hemin ho pater hina tekna theoy klethomen, ⸂kai esmen⸃. dia toyto ho kosmos oy ginoskei ⸀hemas hoti oyk egno ayton.
Edified Edition (EDE)Behold, what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called the sons of God: therefore the world knows us not, because it knew Him not.

2
Phonetic (Greek): agapetoi, nyn tekna theoy esmen, kai oypo ephanerothe ti esometha. ⸀oidamen hoti ean phanerothῇ homoioi aytῷ esometha, hoti opsometha ayton kathos estin.
Edified Edition (EDE)Beloved, now are we the sons of God, and it does not yet appear what we shall be: but we know that, when He shall appear, we shall be like Him; for we shall see Him as He is.

3
Phonetic (Greek): kai pas ho echon ten elpida tayten epʼ aytῷ hagnizei heauton kathos ekeinos hagnos estin.
Edified Edition (EDE)And every person who has this hope in Him purifies himself, even as He is pure.

4
Phonetic (Greek): Pas ho poion ten hamartian kai ten anomian poiei, kai he hamartia estin he anomia.
Edified Edition (EDE)Whoever commits sin transgresses also the law: for sin is the transgression of the law.

5
Phonetic (Greek): kai oidate hoti ekeinos ephanerothe hina tas ⸀hamartias arῃ, kai hamartia en aytῷ oyk estin.
Edified Edition (EDE)And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins; and in Him is no sin.

Edified Edition (EDE)Whoever remains in Him sins not: whoever sins has not seen Him, neither known Him.

7
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀teknia, medeis planato hymas· ho poion ten dikaiosynen dikaios estin, kathos ekeinos dikaios estin·
Edified Edition (EDE)Little children, let no one deceive you: he who does righteousness is righteous, even as He is righteous.

8
Phonetic (Greek): ho poion ten hamartian ek toy diabolou estin, hoti apʼ arches ho diabolos hamartanei. eis toyto ephanerothe ho yhios toy theoy hina lysῃ ta erga toy diabolou.
Edified Edition (EDE)He who commits sin is of the devil; for the devil sins from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil.

9
Phonetic (Greek): pas ho gegennemenos ek toy theoy hamartian oy poiei, hoti sperma aytoy en aytῷ menei, kai oy dynatai hamartanein, hoti ek toy theoy gegennetai.
Edified Edition (EDE)Whoever is born of God does not commit sin; for His seed remains in him: and he cannot sin, because he is born of God.

10
Phonetic (Greek): en toytῳ phanera estin ta tekna toy theoy kai ta tekna toy diabolou· pas ho me poion dikaiosynen oyk estin ek toy theoy, kai ho me agapon ton adelphon aytoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)In this the children of God are manifest, and the children of the devil: whoever does not righteousness is not of God, neither he who loves not his brother.

11
Phonetic (Greek): Ὅti ahyte estin he angelia hen ekoysate apʼ arches, hina agapomen allelous·
Edified Edition (EDE)For this is the message that you heard from the beginning, that we should love one another.

12
Phonetic (Greek): oy kathos Kain ek toy poneroy en kai esphaxen ton adelphon aytoy· kai charin tinos esphaxen ayton; hoti ta erga aytoy ponera en, ta de toy adelphoy aytoy dikaia.
Edified Edition (EDE)Not as Cain, who was of that wicked one, and slew his brother. And for what reason did he slay him? Because his own works were evil, and his brother’s righteous.

13
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀me thaumazete, ⸀adelphoi, ei misei hymas ho kosmos.
Edified Edition (EDE)Marvel not, my brothers, if the world hates you.

14
Phonetic (Greek): hemeis oidamen hoti metabebekamen ek toy thanatou eis ten zoen, hoti agapomen toys adelphoys· ho me ⸀agapon menei en tῷ thanatῳ.
Edified Edition (EDE)We know that we have passed from death to life, because we love the brothers. He who loves not his brother remains in death.

15
Phonetic (Greek): pas ho mison ton adelphon aytoy anthropoktonos estin, kai oidate hoti pas anthropoktonos oyk echei zoen aionion en ⸀aytῷ menousan.
Edified Edition (EDE)Whoever hates his brother is a murderer: and you know that no murderer has eternal life remaining in him.

16
Phonetic (Greek): en toytῳ egnokamen ten agapen, hoti ekeinos hyper hemon ten psychen aytoy etheken· kai hemeis opheilomen hyper ton adelphon tas psychas ⸀theinai.
Edified Edition (EDE)Hereby perceive we the love of God, because He laid down His life for us: and we ought to lay down our lives for the brothers.

17
Phonetic (Greek): hos dʼ an echῃ ton bion toy kosmou kai theorῇ ton adelphon aytoy chreian echonta kai kleisῃ ta splanchna aytoy apʼ aytoy, pos he agape toy theoy menei en aytῷ;
Edified Edition (EDE)But whoever has this world’s good, and sees his brother have need, and shuts up his heart from him, how dwells the love of God in him?

ὃς δʼ ἂν ἔχῃ τὸν βίον τοῦ κόσμου καὶ θεωρῇ τὸν ἀδελφὸν αὐτοῦ χρείαν ἔχοντα καὶ κλείσῃ τὰ σπλάγχνα αὐτοῦ ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ, πῶς ἡ ἀγάπη τοῦ θεοῦ μένει ἐν αὐτῷ;

18
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀Teknia, me agapomen logῳ mede tῇ glossῃ alla en ergῳ kai aletheiᾳ.
Edified Edition (EDE)My little children, let us not love in word, neither in tongue; but in deed and in truth.

19
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀en toytῳ ⸀gnosometha hoti ek tes aletheias esmen, kai emprosthen aytoy peisomen ⸂ten kardian⸃ hemon
Edified Edition (EDE)And hereby we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him.

20
Phonetic (Greek): hoti ean kataginoskῃ hemon he kardia, hoti meizon estin ho theos tes kardias hemon kai ginoskei panta.
Edified Edition (EDE)For if our heart condemn us, God is greater than our heart, and knows all things.

21
Phonetic (Greek): agapetoi, ean he kardia ⸂me kataginoskῃ hemon⸃, parresian echomen pros ton theon,
Edified Edition (EDE)Beloved, if our heart condemn us not, then have we confidence toward God.

22
Phonetic (Greek): kai ho ⸀ean aitomen lambanomen ⸀apʼ aytoy, hoti tas entolas aytoy teroymen kai ta aresta enopion aytoy poioymen.
Edified Edition (EDE)And whatever we ask, we receive of Him, because we keep His commandments, and do those things that are pleasing in His sight.

23
Phonetic (Greek): kai ahyte estin he entole aytoy, hina ⸀pisteysomen tῷ onomati toy yhioy aytoy Ἰesoy Christoy kai agapomen allelous, kathos edoken entolen ⸀hemin.
Edified Edition (EDE)And this is His commandment, That we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ, and love one another, as He commanded us.

24
Phonetic (Greek): kai ho teron tas entolas aytoy en aytῷ menei kai aytos en aytῷ· kai en toytῳ ginoskomen hoti menei en hemin, ek toy pneymatos ohy hemin edoken.
Edified Edition (EDE)And he who keeps His commandments remains in Him, and He in him. And hereby we know that He remains in us, by the Spirit which He has given us.
