1 Thessalonians

Chapter 5

Phonetic (Greek): Peri de ton chronon kai ton kairon, adelphoi, oy chreian echete hymin graphesthai,

Edified Edition (EDE)But concerning the times and the seasons, brothers, you have no need that I should write to you.

Περὶ δὲ τῶν χρόνων καὶ τῶν καιρῶν, ἀδελφοί, οὐ χρείαν ἔχετε ὑμῖν γράφεσθαι,

Phonetic (Greek): aytoi gar akribos oidate ⸀hoti hemera kyriou hos kleptes en nykti ohytos erchetai.

Edified Edition (EDE)For you yourselves know perfectly that the day of the Lord so comes as a thief in the night.

αὐτοὶ γὰρ ἀκριβῶς οἴδατε ⸀ὅτι ἡμέρα κυρίου ὡς κλέπτης ἐν νυκτὶ οὕτως ἔρχεται.

Phonetic (Greek): ⸀hotan legosin· Eirene kai asphaleia, tote aiphnidios aytois ephistatai olethros hosper he odin tῇ en gastri echoysῃ, kai oy me ekphygosin.

Edified Edition (EDE)For when they say, "Peace and safety!" then sudden destruction comes upon them, as labour pains upon a pregnant woman. And they shall not escape.

⸀ὅταν λέγωσιν· Εἰρήνη καὶ ἀσφάλεια, τότε αἰφνίδιος αὐτοῖς ἐφίσταται ὄλεθρος ὥσπερ ἡ ὠδὶν τῇ ἐν γαστρὶ ἐχούσῃ, καὶ οὐ μὴ ἐκφύγωσιν.

Phonetic (Greek): hymeis de, adelphoi, oyk este en skotei, hina he hemera hymas hos ⸀kleptes katalabῃ,

Edified Edition (EDE)But you, brothers, are not in darkness, so that this Day should overtake you as a thief.

ὑμεῖς δέ, ἀδελφοί, οὐκ ἐστὲ ἐν σκότει, ἵνα ἡ ἡμέρα ὑμᾶς ὡς ⸀κλέπτης καταλάβῃ,

Phonetic (Greek): pantes ⸀gar hymeis yhioi photos este kai yhioi hemeras. oyk esmen nyktos oyde skotous·

Edified Edition (EDE)You are all sons of light and sons of the day. We are not of the night nor of darkness.

πάντες ⸀γὰρ ὑμεῖς υἱοὶ φωτός ἐστε καὶ υἱοὶ ἡμέρας. οὐκ ἐσμὲν νυκτὸς οὐδὲ σκότους·

Phonetic (Greek): ara oyn me katheydomen ⸀hos ohi loipoi, alla gregoromen kai nephomen.

Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore let us not sleep, as others do, but let us watch and be sober.

ἄρα οὖν μὴ καθεύδωμεν ⸀ὡς οἱ λοιποί, ἀλλὰ γρηγορῶμεν καὶ νήφωμεν.

Phonetic (Greek): ohi gar katheydontes nyktos katheydousin, kai ohi methyskomenoi nyktos methyousin·

Edified Edition (EDE)For those who sleep, sleep at night, and those who get drunk are drunk at night.

οἱ γὰρ καθεύδοντες νυκτὸς καθεύδουσιν, καὶ οἱ μεθυσκόμενοι νυκτὸς μεθύουσιν·

Phonetic (Greek): hemeis de hemeras ontes nephomen, endysamenoi thoraka pisteos kai agapes kai perikephalaian elpida soterias·

Edified Edition (EDE)But let us who are of the day be sober, putting on the breastplate of faith and love, and as a helmet the hope of salvation.

ἡμεῖς δὲ ἡμέρας ὄντες νήφωμεν, ἐνδυσάμενοι θώρακα πίστεως καὶ ἀγάπης καὶ περικεφαλαίαν ἐλπίδα σωτηρίας·

Phonetic (Greek): hoti oyk etheto hemas ho theos eis orgen alla eis peripoiesin soterias dia toy kyriou hemon Ἰesoy Christoy,

Edified Edition (EDE)For God did not appoint us to wrath, but to obtain salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ,

ὅτι οὐκ ἔθετο ἡμᾶς ὁ θεὸς εἰς ὀργὴν ἀλλὰ εἰς περιποίησιν σωτηρίας διὰ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ,

Phonetic (Greek): toy apothanontos ⸀peri hemon hina eite gregoromen eite katheydomen hama syn aytῷ zesomen.

Edified Edition (EDE)who died for us, that whether we wake or sleep, we should live together with Him.

τοῦ ἀποθανόντος ⸀περὶ ἡμῶν ἵνα εἴτε γρηγορῶμεν εἴτε καθεύδωμεν ἅμα σὺν αὐτῷ ζήσωμεν.

Phonetic (Greek): dio parakaleite allelous kai oikodomeite ehis ton hena, kathos kai poieite.

Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore comfort each other and edify one another, just as you also are doing.

διὸ παρακαλεῖτε ἀλλήλους καὶ οἰκοδομεῖτε εἷς τὸν ἕνα, καθὼς καὶ ποιεῖτε.

Phonetic (Greek): Ἐrotomen de hymas, adelphoi, eidenai toys kopiontas en hymin kai proistamenous hymon en kyriῳ kai nouthetoyntas hymas,

Edified Edition (EDE)And we urge you, brothers, to recognise those who labour among you, and are over you in the Lord and admonish you,

Ἐρωτῶμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, εἰδέναι τοὺς κοπιῶντας ἐν ὑμῖν καὶ προϊσταμένους ὑμῶν ἐν κυρίῳ καὶ νουθετοῦντας ὑμᾶς,

Phonetic (Greek): kai hegeisthai aytoys ⸀hyperekperissoy en agapῃ dia to ergon ayton. eireneyete en ⸀heautois.

Edified Edition (EDE)and to esteem them very highly in love for their work’s sake. Be at peace among yourselves.

καὶ ἡγεῖσθαι αὐτοὺς ⸀ὑπερεκπερισσοῦ ἐν ἀγάπῃ διὰ τὸ ἔργον αὐτῶν. εἰρηνεύετε ἐν ⸀ἑαυτοῖς.

Phonetic (Greek): parakaloymen de hymas, adelphoi, noutheteite toys ataktous, paramytheisthe toys oligopsychous, antechesthe ton asthenon, makrothymeite pros pantas.

Edified Edition (EDE)Now we exhort you, brothers, warn those who are unruly, comfort the fainthearted, uphold the weak, be patient with all.

παρακαλοῦμεν δὲ ὑμᾶς, ἀδελφοί, νουθετεῖτε τοὺς ἀτάκτους, παραμυθεῖσθε τοὺς ὀλιγοψύχους, ἀντέχεσθε τῶν ἀσθενῶν, μακροθυμεῖτε πρὸς πάντας.

Phonetic (Greek): horate me tis kakon anti kakoy tini apodῷ, alla pantote to agathon ⸀diokete eis allelous kai eis pantas.

Edified Edition (EDE)See that no one renders evil for evil to anyone, but always pursue what is good both for yourselves and for all.

ὁρᾶτε μή τις κακὸν ἀντὶ κακοῦ τινι ἀποδῷ, ἀλλὰ πάντοτε τὸ ἀγαθὸν ⸀διώκετε εἰς ἀλλήλους καὶ εἰς πάντας.

Phonetic (Greek): pantote chairete,

Edified Edition (EDE)Rejoice always,

πάντοτε χαίρετε,

Phonetic (Greek): adialeiptos proseychesthe,

Edified Edition (EDE)pray without ceasing,

ἀδιαλείπτως προσεύχεσθε,

Phonetic (Greek): en panti eycharisteite· toyto gar thelema theoy en Christῷ Ἰesoy eis hymas.

Edified Edition (EDE)in everything give thanks; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.

ἐν παντὶ εὐχαριστεῖτε· τοῦτο γὰρ θέλημα θεοῦ ἐν Χριστῷ Ἰησοῦ εἰς ὑμᾶς.

Phonetic (Greek): to pneyma me sbennyte,

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not quench the Spirit.

τὸ πνεῦμα μὴ σβέννυτε,

Phonetic (Greek): propheteias me exoutheneite·

Edified Edition (EDE)Do not despise prophecies.

προφητείας μὴ ἐξουθενεῖτε·

Phonetic (Greek): panta de dokimazete, to kalon katechete,

Edified Edition (EDE)Test all things; hold fast what is good.

πάντα δὲ δοκιμάζετε, τὸ καλὸν κατέχετε,

Phonetic (Greek): apo pantos eidous poneroy apechesthe.

Edified Edition (EDE)Abstain from every form of evil.

ἀπὸ παντὸς εἴδους πονηροῦ ἀπέχεσθε.

Phonetic (Greek): Aytos de ho theos tes eirenes hagiasai hymas holoteleis, kai holokleron hymon to pneyma kai he psyche kai to soma amemptos en tῇ parousiᾳ toy kyriou hemon Ἰesoy Christoy teretheie.

Edified Edition (EDE)Now may the God of peace Himself sanctify you completely; and may your whole spirit, soul, and body be preserved blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.

Αὐτὸς δὲ ὁ θεὸς τῆς εἰρήνης ἁγιάσαι ὑμᾶς ὁλοτελεῖς, καὶ ὁλόκληρον ὑμῶν τὸ πνεῦμα καὶ ἡ ψυχὴ καὶ τὸ σῶμα ἀμέμπτως ἐν τῇ παρουσίᾳ τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τηρηθείη.

Phonetic (Greek): pistos ho kalon hymas, hos kai poiesei.

Edified Edition (EDE)He who calls you is faithful, who also will do it.

πιστὸς ὁ καλῶν ὑμᾶς, ὃς καὶ ποιήσει.

Phonetic (Greek): Ἀdelphoi, ⸀proseychesthe peri hemon.

Edified Edition (EDE)Brothers, pray for us.

Ἀδελφοί, ⸀προσεύχεσθε περὶ ἡμῶν.

Phonetic (Greek): aspasasthe toys adelphoys pantas en philemati hagiῳ.

Edified Edition (EDE)Greet all the brothers with a holy kiss.

ἀσπάσασθε τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς πάντας ἐν φιλήματι ἁγίῳ.

Phonetic (Greek): ⸀enorkizo hymas ton kyrion anagnosthenai ten epistolen pasin ⸀tois adelphois.

Edified Edition (EDE)I charge you by the Lord that this epistle be read to all the holy brothers.

⸀ἐνορκίζω ὑμᾶς τὸν κύριον ἀναγνωσθῆναι τὴν ἐπιστολὴν πᾶσιν ⸀τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς.

Phonetic (Greek): he charis toy kyriou hemon Ἰesoy Christoy methʼ ⸀hymon.

Edified Edition (EDE)The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ be with you. Amen.

ἡ χάρις τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ μεθʼ ⸀ὑμῶν.
