1 Timothy

Chapter 3
1
Phonetic (Greek): Pistos ho logos· ei tis episkopes oregetai, kaloy ergou epithymei.
Edified Edition (EDE)This is a faithful saying: If a man desires the office of an overseer, he desires a good work.

2
Phonetic (Greek): dei oyn ton episkopon anepilempton einai, mias gynaikos andra, nephalion, sophrona, kosmion, philoxenon, didaktikon,
Edified Edition (EDE)An overseer then must be blameless, the husband of one wife, vigilant, sober-minded, of good behaviour, given to hospitality, able to teach;

3
Phonetic (Greek): me paroinon, me ⸀plekten, alla epieike, amachon, aphilargyron,
Edified Edition (EDE)Not given to wine, not a striker, not greedy for money, but patient, not a brawler, not covetous;

4
Phonetic (Greek): toy idiou oikou kalos proistamenon, tekna echonta en hypotagῇ meta pases semnotetos·
Edified Edition (EDE)One who rules his own house well, having his children in subjection with all reverence;

5
Phonetic (Greek): (ei de tis toy idiou oikou prostenai oyk oiden, pos ekklesias theoy epimelesetai;)
Edified Edition (EDE)(For if a man does not know how to rule his own house, how shall he take care of the church of God?)

6
Phonetic (Greek): me neophyton, hina me typhotheis eis krima empesῃ toy diabolou.
Edified Edition (EDE)Not a new convert, lest being puffed up with pride he fall into the condemnation of the devil.

7
Phonetic (Greek): dei ⸀de kai martyrian kalen echein apo ton exothen, hina me eis oneidismon empesῃ kai pagida toy diabolou.
Edified Edition (EDE)Moreover he must have a good report from those who are outside, lest he fall into reproach and the snare of the devil.

8
Phonetic (Greek): Diakonous hosaytos semnoys, me dilogous, me oinῳ pollῷ prosechontas, me aischrokerdeis,
Edified Edition (EDE)Likewise must deacons be reverent, not double-tongued, not given to much wine, not greedy for money;

9
Phonetic (Greek): echontas to mysterion tes pisteos en katharᾷ syneidesei.
Edified Edition (EDE)Holding the mystery of the faith in a pure conscience.

10
Phonetic (Greek): kai ohytoi de dokimazesthosan proton, eita diakoneitosan anenkletoi ontes.
Edified Edition (EDE)And let these also first be tested; then let them serve as deacons, if they are found blameless.

11
Phonetic (Greek): gynaikas hosaytos semnas, me diabolous, nephalious, pistas en pasin.
Edified Edition (EDE)Even so must their wives be reverent, not slanderers, sober, faithful in all things.

12
Phonetic (Greek): diakonoi estosan mias gynaikos andres, teknon kalos proistamenoi kai ton idion oikon·
Edified Edition (EDE)Let deacons be the husbands of one wife, ruling their children and their own houses well.

13
Phonetic (Greek): ohi gar kalos diakonesantes bathmon heautois kalon peripoioyntai kai pollen parresian en pistei tῇ en Christῷ Ἰesoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)For those who have served well as deacons purchase for themselves a good standing and great boldness in the faith which is in Christ Jesus.

Edified Edition (EDE)These things I write to you, hoping to come to you shortly;

15
Phonetic (Greek): ean de bradyno, hina eidῇs pos dei en oikῳ theoy anastrephesthai, hetis estin ekklesia theoy zontos, stylos kai hedraioma tes aletheias·
Edified Edition (EDE)But if I tarry long, that you may know how you ought to behave yourself in the house of God, which is the church of the living God, the pillar and ground of the truth.

16
Phonetic (Greek): kai homologoumenos mega estin to tes eysebeias mysterion· ⸀Ὃs ephanerothe en sarki, edikaiothe en pneymati, ophthe angelois, ekerychthe en ethnesin, episteythe en kosmῳ, anelemphthe en doxῃ.
Edified Edition (EDE)And without controversy, great is the mystery of godliness: God was manifested in the flesh, justified in the Spirit, seen by angels, preached to the Gentiles, believed on in the world, received up into glory.
