Chapter 5
1
Phonetic (Greek): Presbyterῳ me epiplexῃs, alla parakalei hos patera, neoterous hos adelphoys,
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not rebuke an older man, but exhort him as a father, and the younger men as brothers;

Edified Edition (EDE)The older women as mothers, the younger as sisters, with all purity.

3
Phonetic (Greek): Cheras tima tas ontos cheras.
Edified Edition (EDE)Honour widows who are widows indeed.

4
Phonetic (Greek): ei de tis chera tekna e ekgona echei, manthanetosan proton ton idion oikon eysebein kai amoibas apodidonai tois progonois, toyto gar estin apodekton enopion toy theoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)But if any widow has children or grandchildren, let them learn first to show piety at home and to repay their parents; for that is good and acceptable before God.

5
Phonetic (Greek): he de ontos chera kai memonomene elpiken epi ⸀theon kai prosmenei tais deesesin kai tais proseuchais nyktos kai hemeras·
Edified Edition (EDE)Now she who is a widow indeed and desolate trusts in God and continues in supplications and prayers night and day.

6
Phonetic (Greek): he de spatalosa zosa tethneken.
Edified Edition (EDE)But she who lives in pleasure is dead while she lives.

7
Phonetic (Greek): kai tayta parangelle, hina anepilemptoi osin·
Edified Edition (EDE)And these things give in charge, that they may be blameless.

8
Phonetic (Greek): ei de tis ton idion kai ⸀malista oikeion oy ⸀pronoei, ten pistin ernetai kai estin apistou cheiron.
Edified Edition (EDE)But if anyone does not provide for his own, and especially for those of his own house, he has denied the faith and is worse than an unbeliever.

9
Phonetic (Greek): Chera katalegestho me elatton eton hexekonta gegonyia, henos andros gyne,
Edified Edition (EDE)Let not a widow be enrolled under sixty years old, having been the wife of one man,

10
Phonetic (Greek): en ergois kalois martyroumene, ei eteknotrophesen, ei exenodochesen, ei hagion podas enipsen, ei thlibomenois eperkesen, ei panti ergῳ agathῷ epekoloythesen.
Edified Edition (EDE)Well reported of for good works; if she has brought up children, if she has lodged strangers, if she has washed the saints’ feet, if she has relieved the afflicted, if she has diligently followed every good work.

11
Phonetic (Greek): neoteras de cheras paraitoy· hotan gar katastreniasosin toy Christoy, gamein thelousin,
Edified Edition (EDE)But the younger widows refuse; for when they have begun to grow wanton against Christ, they will marry;

12
Phonetic (Greek): echousai krima hoti ten proten pistin ethetesan·
Edified Edition (EDE)Having condemnation because they have cast off their first faith.

13
Phonetic (Greek): hama de kai argai manthanousin, perierchomenai tas oikias, oy monon de argai alla kai phlyaroi kai periergoi, laloysai ta me deonta.
Edified Edition (EDE)And besides they learn to be idle, wandering about from house to house; and not only idle, but gossips also and busybodies, speaking things which they ought not.

14
Phonetic (Greek): boylomai oyn neoteras gamein, teknogonein, oikodespotein, medemian aphormen didonai tῷ antikeimenῳ loidorias charin·
Edified Edition (EDE)I desire therefore that the younger women marry, bear children, guide the house, give no occasion to the adversary to speak reproachfully.

15
Phonetic (Greek): ede gar tines exetrapesan opiso toy Satana.
Edified Edition (EDE)For some have already turned aside after Satan.

16
Phonetic (Greek): ei ⸀tis piste echei cheras, ⸀eparkeito aytais, kai me bareistho he ekklesia, hina tais ontos cherais eparkesῃ.
Edified Edition (EDE)If any man or woman who believes has widows, let them relieve them, and let not the church be burdened, that it may relieve those who are widows indeed.

17
Phonetic (Greek): Ohi kalos proestotes presbyteroi diples times axioysthosan, malista ohi kopiontes en logῳ kai didaskaliᾳ·
Edified Edition (EDE)Let the elders who rule well be counted worthy of double honour, especially those who labour in the word and doctrine.

18
Phonetic (Greek): legei gar he graphe· Boyn aloonta oy phimoseis, kai· Ἄxios ho ergates toy misthoy aytoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)For the scripture says, "You shall not muzzle the ox that treads out the grain." And, "The labourer is worthy of his reward."

19
Phonetic (Greek): kata presbyterou kategorian me paradechou, ektos ei me epi dyo e trion martyron·
Edified Edition (EDE)Against an elder receive not an accusation, except before two or three witnesses.

20
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀toys hamartanontas enopion panton elenche, hina kai ohi loipoi phobon echosin.
Edified Edition (EDE)Those who sin rebuke before all, that others also may fear.

21
Phonetic (Greek): diamartyromai enopion toy theoy kai ⸂Christoy Ἰesoy⸃ kai ton eklekton angelon, hina tayta phylaxῃs choris prokrimatos, meden poion kata prosklisin.
Edified Edition (EDE)I charge you before God, and the Lord Jesus Christ, and the elect angels, that you observe these things without prejudice, doing nothing by partiality.

22
Phonetic (Greek): cheiras tacheos medeni epitithei, mede koinonei hamartiais allotriais· seauton hagnon terei.
Edified Edition (EDE)Lay hands hastily on no one, neither be a partaker of other men’s sins; keep yourself pure.

23
Phonetic (Greek): meketi hydropotei, alla oinῳ oligῳ chro dia ton ⸀stomachon kai tas pyknas sou astheneias.
Edified Edition (EDE)Drink no longer water only, but use a little wine for your stomach’s sake and your frequent infirmities.

24
Phonetic (Greek): Tinon anthropon ahi hamartiai prodeloi eisin, proagousai eis krisin, tisin de kai epakolouthoysin·
Edified Edition (EDE)Some men’s sins are evident beforehand, going before to judgement; and some men they follow after.

25
Phonetic (Greek): hosaytos kai ta ⸂erga ta kala⸃ ⸀prodela, kai ta allos echonta krybenai oy dynantai.
Edified Edition (EDE)Likewise also the good works of some are manifest beforehand; and those that are otherwise cannot be hidden.
