Chapter 17
1
Phonetic (Greek): Diodeysantes de ten Ἀmphipolin kai ⸀ten Ἀpollonian elthon eis Thessaloniken, hopou ⸀en synagoge ton Ἰoudaion.
Edified Edition (EDE)Now when they had passed through Amphipolis and Apollonia, they came to Thessalonica, where there was a synagogue of the Jews.

2
Phonetic (Greek): kata de to eiothos tῷ Paylῳ eiselthen pros aytoys kai epi sabbata tria dielexato aytois apo ton graphon,
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Paul, as his custom was, went in up to them, and for three Sabbaths reasoned with them from the Scriptures,

3
Phonetic (Greek): dianoigon kai paratithemenos hoti ton christon edei pathein kai anastenai ek nekron, kai hoti ohytos estin ⸂ho christos, ho⸃ Ἰesoys hon ego katangello hymin.
Edified Edition (EDE)explaining and demonstrating that the Christ had to suffer and rise again from the dead, and saying, "This Jesus whom I preach to you is the Christ."

4
Phonetic (Greek): kai tines ex ayton epeisthesan kai proseklerothesan tῷ Paylῳ kai tῷ Silᾷ, ton te sebomenon Ἑllenon ⸂plethos poly⸃ gynaikon te ton proton oyk oligai.
Edified Edition (EDE)And some of them were persuaded; and a great multitude of the devout Greeks, and not a few of the leading women, joined Paul and Silas.

5
Phonetic (Greek): ⸂zelosantes de ohi Ἰoudaioi kai proslabomenoi⸃ ton agoraion ⸂andras tinas⸃ poneroys kai ochlopoiesantes ethoryboun ten polin, ⸂kai epistantes⸃ tῇ oikiᾳ Ἰasonos ezetoun aytoys ⸀proagagein eis ton demon·
Edified Edition (EDE)But the Jews who were not persuaded, becoming envious, took some of the evil men from the marketplace, and gathering a mob, set all the city in an uproar and attacked the house of Jason, and sought to bring them out to the people.

6
Phonetic (Greek): me ehyrontes de aytoys ⸀esyron Ἰasona kai tinas adelphoys epi toys politarchas, boontes hoti Ohi ten oikoumenen anastatosantes ohytoi kai enthade pareisin,
Edified Edition (EDE)But when they did not find them, they dragged Jason and some brothers to the rulers of the city, crying out, "These who have turned the world upside down have come here too.

7
Phonetic (Greek): ohys hypodedektai Ἰason· kai ohytoi pantes apenanti ton dogmaton Kaisaros prassousi, basilea ⸂heteron legontes⸃ einai Ἰesoyn.
Edified Edition (EDE)Jason has harboured them, and these are all acting contrary to the decrees of Caesar, saying there is another king, Jesus."

8
Phonetic (Greek): etaraxan de ton ochlon kai toys politarchas akoyontas tayta,
Edified Edition (EDE)And they troubled the people and the rulers of the city when they heard these things.

9
Phonetic (Greek): kai labontes to hikanon para toy Ἰasonos kai ton loipon apelysan aytoys.
Edified Edition (EDE)So when they had taken security from Jason and the others, they let them go.

10
Phonetic (Greek): Ohi de adelphoi eytheos ⸀dia nyktos exepempsan ton te Paylon kai ton Silan eis Beroian, ohitines paragenomenoi eis ten synagogen ⸂ton Ἰoudaion apῄesan⸃·
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the brothers immediately sent Paul and Silas away by night to Berea. When they arrived, they went into the synagogue of the Jews.

11
Phonetic (Greek): ohytoi de esan eygenesteroi ton en Thessalonikῃ, ohitines edexanto ton logon meta pases prothymias, ⸀to kathʼ hemeran anakrinontes tas graphas ei echoi tayta ohytos.
Edified Edition (EDE)These were more noble-minded than those in Thessalonica, in that they received the word with all readiness, and searched the Scriptures daily to find out whether these things were so.

12
Phonetic (Greek): polloi men oyn ex ayton episteusan, kai ton Ἑllenidon gynaikon ton eyschemonon kai andron oyk oligoi.
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore many of them believed, and also not a few of the Greeks, prominent women as well as men.

13
Phonetic (Greek): hos de egnosan ohi apo tes Thessalonikes Ἰoudaioi hoti kai en tῇ Beroiᾳ katengele hypo toy Paylou ho logos toy theoy, elthon kakei saleyontes ⸂kai tarassontes⸃ toys ochlous.
Edified Edition (EDE)But when the Jews from Thessalonica learned that the word of God was preached by Paul at Berea, they came there also and stirred up the crowds.

14
Phonetic (Greek): eytheos de tote ton Paylon exapesteilan ohi adelphoi poreyesthai ⸀heos epi ten thalassan· ⸂hypemeinan te⸃ ho te Silas kai ho Timotheos ekei.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then immediately the brothers sent Paul away, to go to the sea; but both Silas and Timothy remained there.

15
Phonetic (Greek): ohi de ⸀kathistanontes ton Paylon ⸀egagon heos Ἀthenon, kai labontes entolen pros ton Silan kai ⸀ton Timotheon hina hos tachista elthosin pros ayton exῄesan.
Edified Edition (EDE)So those who conducted Paul brought him to Athens; and receiving a command for Silas and Timothy to come to him with all speed, they departed.

16
Phonetic (Greek): Ἐn de tais Ἀthenais ekdechomenou aytoys toy Paylou, paroxyneto to pneyma aytoy en aytῷ ⸀theoroyntos kateidolon oysan ten polin.
Edified Edition (EDE)Now while Paul waited for them at Athens, his spirit was provoked within him when he saw that the city was given over to idols.

17
Phonetic (Greek): dielegeto men oyn en tῇ synagogῇ tois Ἰoudaiois kai tois sebomenois kai en tῇ agorᾷ kata pasan hemeran pros toys paratynchanontas.
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore he reasoned in the synagogue with the Jews and with the Gentile worshippers, and in the marketplace daily with those who happened to be there.

18
Phonetic (Greek): tines de kai ton Ἐpikoureion ⸀kai Stoikon philosophon syneballon aytῷ, kai tines elegon· Ti an theloi ho spermologos ohytos legein; ohi de· Xenon daimonion dokei katangeleys einai· hoti ton Ἰesoyn kai ten anastasin eyengelizeto.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then certain Epicurean and Stoic philosophers encountered him. And some said, "What does this babbler want to say?" Others said, "He seems to be a proclaimer of foreign gods," because he preached to them Jesus and the resurrection.

19
Phonetic (Greek): epilabomenoi ⸀te aytoy epi ton Ἄreion Pagon egagon, legontes· Dynametha gnonai tis he kaine ahyte he hypo soy laloumene didache;
Edified Edition (EDE)And they took him and brought him to the Areopagus, saying, "May we know what this new doctrine is of which you speak?

ἐπιλαβόμενοί ⸀τε αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸν Ἄρειον Πάγον ἤγαγον, λέγοντες· Δυνάμεθα γνῶναι τίς ἡ καινὴ αὕτη ἡ ὑπὸ σοῦ λαλουμένη διδαχή;

20
Phonetic (Greek): xenizonta gar tina eisphereis eis tas akoas hemon· boulometha oyn gnonai ⸂tina thelei⸃ tayta einai.
Edified Edition (EDE)For you are bringing some strange things to our ears. Therefore we want to know what these things mean."

21
Phonetic (Greek): Ἀthenaioi de pantes kai ohi epidemoyntes xenoi eis oyden heteron eykairoun e legein ti ⸀e akoyein ⸀ti kainoteron.
Edified Edition (EDE)For all the Athenians and the strangers who were there spent their time in nothing else but either to tell or to hear something new.

22
Phonetic (Greek): Statheis ⸀de Paylos en mesῳ toy Ἀreiou Pagou ephe· Ἄndres Ἀthenaioi, kata panta hos deisidaimonesterous hymas theoro·
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Paul stood in the midst of the Areopagus and said, "Men of Athens, I perceive that in all things you are very religious;

23
Phonetic (Greek): dierchomenos gar kai anatheoron ta sebasmata hymon ehyron kai bomon en ho epegegrapto· Ἀgnostῳ theῷ. ⸀ho oyn agnooyntes eysebeite, ⸀toyto ego katangello hymin.
Edified Edition (EDE)for as I was passing through and considering the objects of your worship, I even found an altar with this inscription: TO THE UNKNOWN GOD. Therefore, the One whom you worship without knowing, Him I proclaim to you:

24
Phonetic (Greek): ho theos ho poiesas ton kosmon kai panta ta en aytῷ, ohytos oyranoy kai ges ⸂hyparchon kyrios⸃ oyk en cheiropoietois naois katoikei
Edified Edition (EDE)God, who made the world and everything in it, since He is Lord of heaven and earth, does not dwell in temples made with hands.

25
Phonetic (Greek): oyde hypo cheiron ⸀anthropinon therapeyetai prosdeomenos tinos, aytos didoys pasi zoen kai pnoen ⸂kai ta⸃ panta·
Edified Edition (EDE)Nor is He worshipped with men’s hands, as though He needed anything, since He gives to all life, breath, and all things.

26
Phonetic (Greek): epoiesen te ex ⸀henos pan ethnos anthropon katoikein epi ⸂pantos prosopou⸃ tes ges, horisas prostetagmenous kairoys kai tas horothesias tes katoikias ayton,
Edified Edition (EDE)And He has made from one blood every nation of men to dwell on all the face of the earth, and has determined their preappointed times and the boundaries of their dwellings,

27
Phonetic (Greek): zetein ton ⸀theon ei ara ge pselapheseian ayton kai ehyroien, kai ge oy makran apo henos hekastou hemon hyparchonta.
Edified Edition (EDE)so that they should seek the Lord, in the hope that they might grope for Him and find Him, though He is not far from each one of us;

28
Phonetic (Greek): en aytῷ gar zomen kai kinoymetha kai esmen, hos kai tines ton kathʼ hymas poieton eirekasin· Toy gar kai genos esmen.
Edified Edition (EDE)for in Him we live and move and have our being, as also some of your own poets have said, ‘For we are also His offspring.’

29
Phonetic (Greek): genos oyn hyparchontes toy theoy oyk opheilomen nomizein chrysῷ e argyrῳ e lithῳ, charagmati technes kai enthymeseos anthropou, to theion einai homoion.
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore, since we are the offspring of God, we ought not to think that the Divine Nature is like gold or silver or stone, something shaped by art and man’s devising.

30
Phonetic (Greek): toys men oyn chronous tes agnoias hyperidon ho theos ta nyn ⸀parangellei tois anthropois ⸀pantas pantachoy metanoein,
Edified Edition (EDE)Truly, these times of ignorance God overlooked, but now commands all men everywhere to repent,

31
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀kathoti estesen hemeran en he mellei krinein ten oikoumenen en dikaiosynῃ en andri ho horisen, pistin paraschon pasin anastesas ayton ek nekron.
Edified Edition (EDE)because He has appointed a day on which He will judge the world in righteousness by the Man whom He has ordained. He has given assurance of this to all by raising Him from the dead."

32
Phonetic (Greek): Ἀkoysantes de anastasin nekron ohi men echleyazon ohi de eipan Ἀkousometha sou ⸂peri toytou kai palin⸃.
Edified Edition (EDE)And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead, some mocked, while others said, "We will hear you again on this matter."

33
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀ohytos ho Paylos exelthen ek mesou ayton·
Edified Edition (EDE)So Paul departed from among them.

34
Phonetic (Greek): tines de andres kollethentes aytῷ episteusan, en ohis kai Dionysios ho Ἀreopagites kai gyne onomati Damaris kai heteroi syn aytois.
Edified Edition (EDE)However, some men joined him and believed, among them Dionysius the Areopagite, a woman named Damaris, and others with them.
