Chapter 19
1
Phonetic (Greek): Ἐgeneto de en tῷ ton Ἀpollo einai en Korinthῳ Paylon dielthonta ta anoterika mere ⸀elthein eis Ἔpheson kai ⸀ehyrein tinas mathetas,
Edified Edition (EDE)And it happened, while Apollos was at Corinth, that Paul, having passed through the upper regions, came to Ephesus. And finding some disciples

2
Phonetic (Greek): eipen ⸀te pros aytoys· Ei pneyma hagion elabete pisteysantes; ohi ⸀de pros ayton· Ἀllʼ oydʼ ei pneyma hagion estin ekoysamen.
Edified Edition (EDE)he said to them, "Did you receive the Holy Spirit when you believed?" So they said to him, "We have not so much as heard whether there is a Holy Spirit."

3
Phonetic (Greek): eipen ⸀te· Eis ti oyn ebaptisthete; ohi de eipan· Eis to Ἰoannou baptisma.
Edified Edition (EDE)And he said to them, "Into what then were you baptised?" So they said, "Into John’s baptism."

4
Phonetic (Greek): eipen de Paylos· ⸀Ἰoannes ebaptisen baptisma metanoias, tῷ laῷ legon eis ton erchomenon metʼ ayton hina pisteysosin, toytʼ estin eis ⸀ton Ἰesoyn.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Paul said, "John indeed baptised with a baptism of repentance, saying to the people that they should believe on Him who would come after him, that is, on Christ Jesus."

5
Phonetic (Greek): akoysantes de ebaptisthesan eis to onoma toy kyriou Ἰesoy·
Edified Edition (EDE)When they heard this, they were baptised in the name of the Lord Jesus.

6
Phonetic (Greek): kai epithentos aytois toy ⸀Paylou cheiras elthe to pneyma to hagion epʼ aytoys, elaloun te glossais kai epropheteuon.
Edified Edition (EDE)And when Paul had laid hands on them, the Holy Spirit came upon them, and they spoke with tongues and prophesied.

7
Phonetic (Greek): esan de ohi pantes andres hosei ⸀dodeka.
Edified Edition (EDE)Now the men were about twelve in all.

8
Phonetic (Greek): Eiselthon de eis ten synagogen eparresiazeto epi menas treis dialegomenos kai ⸀peithon peri tes basileias toy theoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)And he went into the synagogue and spoke boldly for three months, reasoning and persuading concerning the things of the kingdom of God.

9
Phonetic (Greek): hos de tines esklerynonto kai epeithoun kakologoyntes ten hodon enopion toy plethous, apostas apʼ ayton aphorisen toys mathetas, kathʼ hemeran dialegomenos en tῇ scholῇ ⸀Tyrannou.
Edified Edition (EDE)But when some were hardened and did not believe, but spoke evil of the Way before the multitude, he departed from them and withdrew the disciples, reasoning daily in the school of Tyrannus.

10
Phonetic (Greek): toyto de egeneto epi ete dyo, hoste pantas toys katoikoyntas ten Ἀsian akoysai ton logon toy ⸀kyriou, Ἰoudaious te kai Ἕllenas.
Edified Edition (EDE)And this continued for two years, so that all who dwelt in Asia heard the word of the Lord Jesus, both Jews and Greeks.

11
Phonetic (Greek): Dynameis te oy tas tychoysas ⸂ho theos epoiei⸃ dia ton cheiron Paylou,
Edified Edition (EDE)Now God worked unusual miracles by the hands of Paul,

12
Phonetic (Greek): hoste kai epi toys asthenoyntas ⸀apopheresthai apo toy chrotos aytoy soudaria e simikinthia kai apallassesthai apʼ ayton tas nosous, ta te pneymata ta ponera ⸀ekporeyesthai.
Edified Edition (EDE)so that even handkerchiefs or aprons were brought from his body to the sick, and the diseases left them and the evil spirits went out of them.

13
Phonetic (Greek): epecheiresan de tines ⸀kai ton perierchomenon Ἰoudaion exorkiston onomazein epi toys echontas ta pneymata ta ponera to onoma toy kyriou Ἰesoy legontes· ⸀Ὁrkizo hymas ton Ἰesoyn ⸀hon Paylos keryssei.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then some of the itinerant Jewish exorcists took it upon themselves to call the name of the Lord Jesus over those who had evil spirits, saying, "We exorcise you by the Jesus whom Paul preaches."

14
Phonetic (Greek): esan de ⸀tinos Skeua Ἰoudaiou archiereos hepta ⸀yhioi toyto poioyntes.
Edified Edition (EDE)Also there were seven sons of Sceva, a Jewish chief priest, who did so.

15
Phonetic (Greek): apokrithen de to pneyma to poneron eipen ⸀aytois· ⸀Ton Ἰesoyn ginosko kai ton Paylon epistamai, hymeis de tines este;
Edified Edition (EDE)And the evil spirit answered and said, "Jesus I know, and Paul I know; but who are you?"

ἀποκριθὲν δὲ τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ πονηρὸν εἶπεν ⸀αὐτοῖς· ⸀Τὸν Ἰησοῦν γινώσκω καὶ τὸν Παῦλον ἐπίσταμαι, ὑμεῖς δὲ τίνες ἐστέ;

16
Phonetic (Greek): kai ⸀ephalomenos ⸂ho anthropos epʼ aytoys⸃ en ho en to pneyma to poneron ⸂katakyrieysas amphoteron⸃ ischysen katʼ ayton, hoste gymnoys kai tetraumatismenous ekphygein ek toy oikou ekeinou.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the man in whom the evil spirit was leaped on them, overpowered them, and prevailed against them, so that they fled out of that house naked and wounded.

17
Phonetic (Greek): toyto de egeneto gnoston pasin Ἰoudaiois te kai Ἕllesin tois katoikoysin ten Ἔpheson, kai ⸀epepesen phobos epi pantas aytoys, kai emegalyneto to onoma toy kyriou Ἰesoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)This became known both to all Jews and Greeks dwelling in Ephesus; and fear fell on them all, and the name of the Lord Jesus was magnified.

18
Phonetic (Greek): polloi te ton pepisteukoton erchonto exomologoymenoi kai anangellontes tas praxeis ayton.
Edified Edition (EDE)And many who had believed came confessing and telling their deeds.

19
Phonetic (Greek): hikanoi de ton ta perierga praxanton synenenkantes tas biblous katekaion enopion panton· kai synepsephisan tas timas ayton kai ehyron argyriou myriadas pente.
Edified Edition (EDE)Also, many of those who had practised magic brought their books together and burned them in the sight of all. And they counted up the value of them, and it totalled fifty thousand pieces of silver.

20
Phonetic (Greek): ohytos kata kratos ⸂toy kyriou ho logos⸃ eyxanen kai ischyen.
Edified Edition (EDE)So the word of the Lord grew mightily and prevailed.

21
Phonetic (Greek): Ὡs de eplerothe tayta, etheto ho Paylos en tῷ pneymati dielthon ten Makedonian kai Ἀchaian poreyesthai eis ⸀Ἱerosolyma, eipon hoti Meta to genesthai me ekei dei me kai Ῥomen idein.
Edified Edition (EDE)When these things were accomplished, Paul purposed in the Spirit, when he had passed through Macedonia and Achaia, to go to Jerusalem, saying, "After I have been there, I must also see Rome."

22
Phonetic (Greek): aposteilas de eis ten Makedonian dyo ton diakonoynton aytῷ, Timotheon kai Ἔraston, aytos epeschen chronon eis ten Ἀsian.
Edified Edition (EDE)So he sent into Macedonia two of those who ministered to him, Timothy and Erastus, but he himself stayed in Asia for a time.

23
Phonetic (Greek): Ἐgeneto de kata ton kairon ekeinon tarachos oyk oligos peri tes hodoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)And about that time there arose a great commotion about the Way.

24
Phonetic (Greek): Demetrios gar tis onomati, argyrokopos, poion naoys argyroys Ἀrtemidos pareicheto tois technitais ⸂oyk oligen ergasian⸃,
Edified Edition (EDE)For a certain man named Demetrius, a silversmith, who made silver shrines of Artemis, brought no small profit to the craftsmen.

25
Phonetic (Greek): ohys synathroisas kai toys peri ta toiayta ergatas eipen· Ἄndres, epistasthe hoti ek taytes tes ergasias he eyporia ⸀hemin estin,
Edified Edition (EDE)He called them together with the workers of similar occupation, and said: "Men, you know that we have our prosperity by this trade.

26
Phonetic (Greek): kai theoreite kai akoyete hoti oy monon Ἐphesou alla schedon pases tes Ἀsias ho Paylos ohytos peisas metestesen hikanon ochlon, legon hoti oyk eisin theoi ohi dia cheiron ginomenoi.
Edified Edition (EDE)Moreover you see and hear that not only at Ephesus, but almost throughout all Asia, this Paul has persuaded and turned away many people, saying that they are not gods which are made with hands.

27
Phonetic (Greek): oy monon de toyto kindyneyei hemin to meros eis apelegmon elthein, alla kai to tes megales theas ⸂Ἀrtemidos hieron⸃ eis oythen logisthenai, mellein ⸀te kai kathaireisthai ⸂tes megaleiotetos⸃ aytes, hen hole he Ἀsia kai he oikoumene sebetai.
Edified Edition (EDE)So not only is this trade of ours in danger of falling into disrepute, but also the temple of the great goddess Artemis may be despised and her magnificence destroyed, whom all Asia and the world worship."

28
Phonetic (Greek): Ἀkoysantes de kai genomenoi plereis thymoy ekrazon legontes· Megale he Ἄrtemis Ἐphesion.
Edified Edition (EDE)Now when they heard this, they were full of wrath and cried out, saying, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"

29
Phonetic (Greek): kai eplesthe he ⸀polis tes synchyseos, hormesan te homothymadon eis to theatron synarpasantes Gaion kai Ἀristarchon Makedonas, synekdemous Paylou.
Edified Edition (EDE)So the whole city was filled with confusion, and rushed into the theatre with one accord, having seized Gaius and Aristarchus, Macedonians, Paul’s travel companions.

30
Phonetic (Greek): ⸂Paylou de⸃ boulomenou eiselthein eis ton demon oyk eion ayton ohi mathetai·
Edified Edition (EDE)And when Paul wanted to go in to the people, the disciples would not allow him.

31
Phonetic (Greek): tines de kai ton Ἀsiarchon, ontes aytῷ philoi, pempsantes pros ayton parekaloun me doynai heauton eis to theatron.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then some of the officials of Asia, who were his friends, sent to him pleading that he would not venture into the theatre.

32
Phonetic (Greek): alloi men oyn allo ti ekrazon, en gar he ekklesia synkechymene, kai ohi pleious oyk edeisan tinos heneka synelelytheisan.
Edified Edition (EDE)Some therefore cried one thing and some another, for the assembly was confused, and most of them did not know why they had come together.

33
Phonetic (Greek): ek de toy ochlou ⸀synebibasan Ἀlexandron probalonton ayton ton Ἰoudaion, ho de Ἀlexandros kataseisas ten cheira ethelen apologeisthai tῷ demῳ.
Edified Edition (EDE)And they drew Alexander out of the multitude, the Jews putting him forward. And Alexander motioned with his hand, and wanted to make a defence to the people.

34
Phonetic (Greek): epignontes de hoti Ἰoudaios estin phone egeneto mia ek panton ⸀hos epi horas dyo krazonton· Megale he Ἄrtemis Ἐphesion.
Edified Edition (EDE)But when they recognised that he was a Jew, all with one voice cried out for about two hours, "Great is Artemis of the Ephesians!"

35
Phonetic (Greek): katasteilas de ⸂ho grammateys ton ochlon⸃ phesin· Ἄndres Ἐphesioi, tis gar estin ⸀anthropon hos oy ginoskei ten Ἐphesion polin neokoron oysan tes ⸀megales Ἀrtemidos kai toy diopetoys;
Edified Edition (EDE)And when the city clerk had quieted the crowd, he said: "Men of Ephesus, what man is there who does not know that the city of the Ephesians is guardian of the temple of the great Artemis, and of the image which fell down from Zeus?

καταστείλας δὲ ⸂ὁ γραμματεὺς τὸν ὄχλον⸃ φησίν· Ἄνδρες Ἐφέσιοι, τίς γάρ ἐστιν ⸀ἀνθρώπων ὃς οὐ γινώσκει τὴν Ἐφεσίων πόλιν νεωκόρον οὖσαν τῆς ⸀μεγάλης Ἀρτέμιδος καὶ τοῦ διοπετοῦς;

36
Phonetic (Greek): anantirreton oyn onton toyton deon estin hymas katestalmenous hyparchein kai meden propetes prassein.
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore, since these things cannot be denied, you ought to be quiet and do nothing rashly.

37
Phonetic (Greek): egagete gar toys andras toytous oyte hierosylous oyte blasphemoyntas ten theon ⸀hemon.
Edified Edition (EDE)For you have brought these men here who are neither robbers of temples nor blasphemers of your goddess.

38
Phonetic (Greek): ei men oyn Demetrios kai ohi syn aytῷ technitai echousin pros tina logon, agoraioi agontai kai anthypatoi eisin, enkaleitosan allelois.
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore, if Demetrius and his fellow craftsmen have a case against anyone, the courts are open and there are proconsuls. Let them bring charges against one another.

Edified Edition (EDE)But if you have any other enquiry to make, it shall be determined in a lawful assembly.

40
Phonetic (Greek): kai gar kindyneyomen enkaleisthai staseos peri tes semeron medenos aitiou hyparchontos peri ohy oy dynesometha ⸀apodoynai logon ⸀peri tes systrophes taytes. kai tayta eipon apelysen ten ekklesian.
Edified Edition (EDE)For we are in danger of being called in question for today’s uproar, there being no reason which we may give to account for this disorderly gathering."
