Phonetic (Greek): Ἄndres adelphoi kai pateres, akoysate mou tes pros hymas nyni apologias.
Edified Edition (EDE)"Brothers and fathers, hear my defence before you now."

Ἄνδρες ἀδελφοὶ καὶ πατέρες, ἀκούσατέ μου τῆς πρὸς ὑμᾶς νυνὶ ἀπολογίας.

Phonetic (Greek): Ἀkoysantes de hoti tῇ Ἑbraidi dialektῳ prosephonei aytois mallon pareschon hesychian. kai phesin·
Edified Edition (EDE)And when they heard that he spoke to them in the Hebrew language, they kept all the more silent. Then he said:

Ἀκούσαντες δὲ ὅτι τῇ Ἑβραΐδι διαλέκτῳ προσεφώνει αὐτοῖς μᾶλλον παρέσχον ἡσυχίαν. καὶ φησίν·

Phonetic (Greek): ⸀Ἐgo eimi aner Ἰoudaios, gegennemenos en Tarsῷ tes Kilikias, anatethrammenos de en tῇ polei taytῃ para toys podas Gamaliel, pepaideumenos kata akribeian toy patrῴou nomou, zelotes hyparchon toy theoy kathos pantes hymeis este semeron,
Edified Edition (EDE)"I am indeed a Jew, born in Tarsus of Cilicia, but brought up in this city at the feet of Gamaliel, taught according to the strictness of our fathers’ law, and was zealous toward God as you all are today.

⸀Ἐγώ εἰμι ἀνὴρ Ἰουδαῖος, γεγεννημένος ἐν Ταρσῷ τῆς Κιλικίας, ἀνατεθραμμένος δὲ ἐν τῇ πόλει ταύτῃ παρὰ τοὺς πόδας Γαμαλιήλ, πεπαιδευμένος κατὰ ἀκρίβειαν τοῦ πατρῴου νόμου, ζηλωτὴς ὑπάρχων τοῦ θεοῦ καθὼς πάντες ὑμεῖς ἐστε σήμερον,

Phonetic (Greek): hos tayten ten hodon edioxa achri thanatou, desmeyon kai paradidoys eis phylakas andras te kai gynaikas,
Edified Edition (EDE)I persecuted this Way to the death, binding and delivering into prisons both men and women,

ὃς ταύτην τὴν ὁδὸν ἐδίωξα ἄχρι θανάτου, δεσμεύων καὶ παραδιδοὺς εἰς φυλακὰς ἄνδρας τε καὶ γυναῖκας,

Phonetic (Greek): hos kai ho archiereys martyrei moi kai pan to presbyterion· parʼ hon kai epistolas dexamenos pros toys adelphoys eis Damaskon eporeuomen axon kai toys ekeise ontas dedemenous eis Ἰerousalem hina timorethosin.
Edified Edition (EDE)as also the high priest bears me witness, and all the council of the elders, from whom I also received letters to the brothers, and went to Damascus to bring in chains even those who were there to Jerusalem to be punished.

ὡς καὶ ὁ ἀρχιερεὺς μαρτυρεῖ μοι καὶ πᾶν τὸ πρεσβυτέριον· παρʼ ὧν καὶ ἐπιστολὰς δεξάμενος πρὸς τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς εἰς Δαμασκὸν ἐπορευόμην ἄξων καὶ τοὺς ἐκεῖσε ὄντας δεδεμένους εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ ἵνα τιμωρηθῶσιν.

Phonetic (Greek): Ἐgeneto de moi poreuomenῳ kai engizonti tῇ Damaskῷ peri mesembrian exaiphnes ek toy oyranoy periastrapsai phos hikanon peri eme,
Edified Edition (EDE)Now it happened, as I journeyed and came near Damascus at about noon, suddenly a great light from heaven shone around me.

Ἐγένετο δέ μοι πορευομένῳ καὶ ἐγγίζοντι τῇ Δαμασκῷ περὶ μεσημβρίαν ἐξαίφνης ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ περιαστράψαι φῶς ἱκανὸν περὶ ἐμέ,

Phonetic (Greek): epesa te eis to edaphos kai ekousa phones legoyses moi· Saoyl Saoyl, ti me diokeis;
Edified Edition (EDE)And I fell to the ground and heard a voice saying to me, ‘Saul, Saul, why are you persecuting Me?’

ἔπεσά τε εἰς τὸ ἔδαφος καὶ ἤκουσα φωνῆς λεγούσης μοι· Σαοὺλ Σαούλ, τί με διώκεις;

Phonetic (Greek): ego de apekrithen· Tis ei, kyrie; eipen te pros ⸀eme· Ἐgo eimi Ἰesoys ho Nazoraios hon sy diokeis.
Edified Edition (EDE)So I answered, ‘Who are You, Lord?’ And He said to me, ‘I am Jesus of Nazareth, whom you are persecuting.’

ἐγὼ δὲ ἀπεκρίθην· Τίς εἶ, κύριε; εἶπέν τε πρὸς ⸀ἐμέ· Ἐγώ εἰμι Ἰησοῦς ὁ Ναζωραῖος ὃν σὺ διώκεις.

Phonetic (Greek): ohi de syn emoi ontes to men phos ⸀etheasanto ten de phonen oyk ekousan toy laloyntos moi.
Edified Edition (EDE)And those who were with me indeed saw the light and were afraid, but they did not hear the voice of Him who spoke to me.

οἱ δὲ σὺν ἐμοὶ ὄντες τὸ μὲν φῶς ⸀ἐθεάσαντο τὴν δὲ φωνὴν οὐκ ἤκουσαν τοῦ λαλοῦντός μοι.

Phonetic (Greek): eipon de· Ti poieso, kyrie; ho de kyrios eipen pros me· Ἀnastas poreyou eis Damaskon, kakei soi lalethesetai peri panton hon tetaktai soi poiesai.
Edified Edition (EDE)So I said, ‘What shall I do, Lord?’ And the Lord said to me, ‘Arise and go into Damascus, and there you will be told all things which are appointed for you to do.’

εἶπον δέ· Τί ποιήσω, κύριε; ὁ δὲ κύριος εἶπεν πρός με· Ἀναστὰς πορεύου εἰς Δαμασκόν, κἀκεῖ σοι λαληθήσεται περὶ πάντων ὧν τέτακταί σοι ποιῆσαι.

Phonetic (Greek): hos de oyk eneblepon apo tes doxes toy photos ekeinou, cheiragogoymenos hypo ton synonton moi elthon eis Damaskon.
Edified Edition (EDE)And since I could not see for the glory of that light, being led by the hand by those who were with me, I came into Damascus.

ὡς δὲ οὐκ ἐνέβλεπον ἀπὸ τῆς δόξης τοῦ φωτὸς ἐκείνου, χειραγωγούμενος ὑπὸ τῶν συνόντων μοι ἦλθον εἰς Δαμασκόν.

Phonetic (Greek): Ἁnanias de tis aner ⸀eylabes kata ton nomon martyroymenos hypo panton ton katoikoynton Ἰoudaion,
Edified Edition (EDE)Then a certain Ananias, a devout man according to the law, having a good reputation among all the Jews who dwelt there,

Ἁνανίας δέ τις ἀνὴρ ⸀εὐλαβὴς κατὰ τὸν νόμον μαρτυρούμενος ὑπὸ πάντων τῶν κατοικούντων Ἰουδαίων,

Phonetic (Greek): elthon pros ⸀eme kai epistas eipen moi· Saoyl adelphe, anablepson· kago aytῇ tῇ horᾳ aneblepsa eis ayton.
Edified Edition (EDE)came to me; and he stood and said to me, ‘Brother Saul, receive your sight.’ And at that very hour I looked up at him.

ἐλθὼν πρὸς ⸀ἐμὲ καὶ ἐπιστὰς εἶπέν μοι· Σαοὺλ ἀδελφέ, ἀνάβλεψον· κἀγὼ αὐτῇ τῇ ὥρᾳ ἀνέβλεψα εἰς αὐτόν.

Phonetic (Greek): ho de eipen· Ὁ theos ton pateron hemon proecheirisato se gnonai to thelema aytoy kai idein ton dikaion kai akoysai phonen ek toy stomatos aytoy,
Edified Edition (EDE)Then he said, ‘The God of our fathers has chosen you that you should know His will, and see the Just One, and hear the voice of His mouth.

ὁ δὲ εἶπεν· Ὁ θεὸς τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν προεχειρίσατό σε γνῶναι τὸ θέλημα αὐτοῦ καὶ ἰδεῖν τὸν δίκαιον καὶ ἀκοῦσαι φωνὴν ἐκ τοῦ στόματος αὐτοῦ,

Phonetic (Greek): hoti esῃ martys aytῷ pros pantas anthropous hon heorakas kai ekousas.
Edified Edition (EDE)For you will be His witness to all men of what you have seen and heard.

ὅτι ἔσῃ μάρτυς αὐτῷ πρὸς πάντας ἀνθρώπους ὧν ἑώρακας καὶ ἤκουσας.

Phonetic (Greek): kai nyn ti melleis; anastas baptisai kai apolousai tas hamartias sou epikalesamenos to onoma ⸀aytoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)And now why do you wait? Arise and be baptised, and wash away your sins, calling on the name of the Lord.’

καὶ νῦν τί μέλλεις; ἀναστὰς βάπτισαι καὶ ἀπόλουσαι τὰς ἁμαρτίας σου ἐπικαλεσάμενος τὸ ὄνομα ⸀αὐτοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): Ἐgeneto de moi hypostrepsanti eis Ἰerousalem kai proseuchomenou mou en tῷ hierῷ genesthai me en ekstasei
Edified Edition (EDE)Now it happened, when I returned to Jerusalem and was praying in the temple, that I was in a trance

Ἐγένετο δέ μοι ὑποστρέψαντι εἰς Ἰερουσαλὴμ καὶ προσευχομένου μου ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ γενέσθαι με ἐν ἐκστάσει

Phonetic (Greek): kai idein ayton legonta moi· Speyson kai exelthe en tachei ex Ἰerousalem, dioti oy paradexontai ⸀sou martyrian peri emoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)and saw Him saying to me, ‘Make haste and get out of Jerusalem quickly, for they will not receive your testimony concerning Me.’

καὶ ἰδεῖν αὐτὸν λέγοντά μοι· Σπεῦσον καὶ ἔξελθε ἐν τάχει ἐξ Ἰερουσαλήμ, διότι οὐ παραδέξονταί ⸀σου μαρτυρίαν περὶ ἐμοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): kago eipon· Kyrie, aytoi epistantai hoti ego emen phylakizon kai deron kata tas synagogas toys pisteyontas epi se·
Edified Edition (EDE)So I said, ‘Lord, they know that in every synagogue I imprisoned and beat those who believed on You;

κἀγὼ εἶπον· Κύριε, αὐτοὶ ἐπίστανται ὅτι ἐγὼ ἤμην φυλακίζων καὶ δέρων κατὰ τὰς συναγωγὰς τοὺς πιστεύοντας ἐπὶ σέ·

Phonetic (Greek): kai hote ⸀exechynneto to ahima Stephanou toy martyros sou, kai aytos emen ephestos kai syneudokon ⸀kai phylasson ta himatia ton anairoynton ayton.
Edified Edition (EDE)and when the blood of Your martyr Stephen was shed, I also was standing by consenting to his death, and guarding the clothes of those who were killing him.’

καὶ ὅτε ⸀ἐξεχύννετο τὸ αἷμα Στεφάνου τοῦ μάρτυρός σου, καὶ αὐτὸς ἤμην ἐφεστὼς καὶ συνευδοκῶν ⸀καὶ φυλάσσων τὰ ἱμάτια τῶν ἀναιρούντων αὐτόν.

Phonetic (Greek): kai eipen pros me· Poreyou, hoti ego eis ethne makran exapostelo se.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then He said to me, ‘Depart, for I will send you far from here to the Gentiles.’"

καὶ εἶπεν πρός με· Πορεύου, ὅτι ἐγὼ εἰς ἔθνη μακρὰν ἐξαποστελῶ σε.

Phonetic (Greek): Ἤkouon de aytoy achri toytou toy logou kai eperan ten phonen ayton legontes· Aire apo tes ges ton toioyton, oy gar katheken ayton zen.
Edified Edition (EDE)And they listened to him until this word, and then they raised their voices and said, "Away with such a fellow from the earth, for he is not fit to live!"

Ἤκουον δὲ αὐτοῦ ἄχρι τούτου τοῦ λόγου καὶ ἐπῆραν τὴν φωνὴν αὐτῶν λέγοντες· Αἶρε ἀπὸ τῆς γῆς τὸν τοιοῦτον, οὐ γὰρ καθῆκεν αὐτὸν ζῆν.

Phonetic (Greek): ⸀kraugazonton ⸀te ayton kai ῥiptoynton ta himatia kai koniorton ballonton eis ton aera,
Edified Edition (EDE)Then, as they cried out and tore off their clothes and threw dust into the air,

⸀κραυγαζόντων ⸀τε αὐτῶν καὶ ῥιπτούντων τὰ ἱμάτια καὶ κονιορτὸν βαλλόντων εἰς τὸν ἀέρα,

Phonetic (Greek): ekeleusen ⸂ho chiliarchos eisagesthai ayton⸃ eis ten parembolen, ⸀eipas mastixin anetazesthai ayton hina epignῷ diʼ hen aitian ohytos epephonoun aytῷ.
Edified Edition (EDE)the commander ordered him to be brought into the barracks, and said that he should be examined by scourging, so that he might know why they shouted so against him.

ἐκέλευσεν ⸂ὁ χιλίαρχος εἰσάγεσθαι αὐτὸν⸃ εἰς τὴν παρεμβολήν, ⸀εἴπας μάστιξιν ἀνετάζεσθαι αὐτὸν ἵνα ἐπιγνῷ διʼ ἣν αἰτίαν οὕτως ἐπεφώνουν αὐτῷ.

Phonetic (Greek): hos de ⸀proeteinan ayton tois himasin eipen pros ton hestota hekatontarchon ho Paylos· Ei anthropon Ῥomaion kai akatakriton exestin hymin mastizein;
Edified Edition (EDE)And as they bound him with thongs, Paul said to the centurion who stood by, "Is it lawful for you to scourge a man who is a Roman, and uncondemned?"

ὡς δὲ ⸀προέτειναν αὐτὸν τοῖς ἱμᾶσιν εἶπεν πρὸς τὸν ἑστῶτα ἑκατόνταρχον ὁ Παῦλος· Εἰ ἄνθρωπον Ῥωμαῖον καὶ ἀκατάκριτον ἔξεστιν ὑμῖν μαστίζειν;

Phonetic (Greek): akoysas de ho hekatontarches proselthon ⸂tῷ chiliarchῳ apengeilen⸃ legon· ⸀Ti melleis poiein; ho gar anthropos ohytos Ῥomaios estin.
Edified Edition (EDE)When the centurion heard that, he went and told the commander, saying, "Take care what you do, for this man is a Roman."

ἀκούσας δὲ ὁ ἑκατοντάρχης προσελθὼν ⸂τῷ χιλιάρχῳ ἀπήγγειλεν⸃ λέγων· ⸀Τί μέλλεις ποιεῖν; ὁ γὰρ ἄνθρωπος οὗτος Ῥωμαῖός ἐστιν.

Phonetic (Greek): proselthon de ho chiliarchos eipen aytῷ· Lege moi, ⸀sy Ῥomaios ei; ho de ephe· Nai.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the commander came and said to him, "Tell me, are you a Roman?" He said, "Yes."

προσελθὼν δὲ ὁ χιλίαρχος εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Λέγε μοι, ⸀σὺ Ῥωμαῖος εἶ; ὁ δὲ ἔφη· Ναί.

Phonetic (Greek): apekrithe ⸀de ho chiliarchos· Ἐgo polloy kephalaiou ten politeian tayten ektesamen. ho de Paylos ephe· Ἐgo de kai gegennemai.
Edified Edition (EDE)The commander answered, "With a large sum I obtained this citizenship." And Paul said, "But I was born a citizen."

ἀπεκρίθη ⸀δὲ ὁ χιλίαρχος· Ἐγὼ πολλοῦ κεφαλαίου τὴν πολιτείαν ταύτην ἐκτησάμην. ὁ δὲ Παῦλος ἔφη· Ἐγὼ δὲ καὶ γεγέννημαι.

Phonetic (Greek): eytheos oyn apestesan apʼ aytoy ohi mellontes ayton anetazein· kai ho chiliarchos de ephobethe epignoys hoti Ῥomaios estin kai hoti ⸂ayton en⸃ dedekos.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then immediately those who were about to examine him withdrew from him; and the commander was also afraid after he realised that he was a Roman, and because he had bound him.

εὐθέως οὖν ἀπέστησαν ἀπʼ αὐτοῦ οἱ μέλλοντες αὐτὸν ἀνετάζειν· καὶ ὁ χιλίαρχος δὲ ἐφοβήθη ἐπιγνοὺς ὅτι Ῥωμαῖός ἐστιν καὶ ὅτι ⸂αὐτὸν ἦν⸃ δεδεκώς.

Phonetic (Greek): Tῇ de epayrion boulomenos gnonai to asphales to ti kategoreitai ⸀hypo ton Ἰoudaion elysen ⸀ayton, kai ekeleusen ⸀synelthein toys archiereis kai ⸀pan to ⸀synedrion, kai katagagon ton Paylon estesen eis aytoys.
Edified Edition (EDE)The next day, because he wanted to know for certain why he was accused by the Jews, he released him from his bonds, and commanded the chief priests and all their council to appear, and brought Paul down and set him before them.

Τῇ δὲ ἐπαύριον βουλόμενος γνῶναι τὸ ἀσφαλὲς τὸ τί κατηγορεῖται ⸀ὑπὸ τῶν Ἰουδαίων ἔλυσεν ⸀αὐτόν, καὶ ἐκέλευσεν ⸀συνελθεῖν τοὺς ἀρχιερεῖς καὶ ⸀πᾶν τὸ ⸀συνέδριον, καὶ καταγαγὼν τὸν Παῦλον ἔστησεν εἰς αὐτούς.
