Edified Edition (EDE)Then the high priest said, "Are these things so?"

Εἶπεν δὲ ὁ ἀρχιερεύς· ⸀Εἰ ταῦτα οὕτως ἔχει;

Phonetic (Greek): ho de ephe· Ἄndres adelphoi kai pateres, akoysate· Ὁ theos tes doxes ophthe tῷ patri hemon Ἀbraam onti en tῇ Mesopotamiᾳ prin e katoikesai ayton en Charran,
Edified Edition (EDE)And he said, "Brothers and fathers, listen: The God of glory appeared to our father Abraham when he was in Mesopotamia, before he dwelt in Haran,

ὁ δὲ ἔφη· Ἄνδρες ἀδελφοὶ καὶ πατέρες, ἀκούσατε· Ὁ θεὸς τῆς δόξης ὤφθη τῷ πατρὶ ἡμῶν Ἀβραὰμ ὄντι ἐν τῇ Μεσοποταμίᾳ πρὶν ἢ κατοικῆσαι αὐτὸν ἐν Χαρράν,

Phonetic (Greek): kai eipen pros ayton· Ἔxelthe ek tes ges sou kai ⸀ek tes syngeneias sou, kai deyro eis ⸀ten gen hen an soi deixo.
Edified Edition (EDE)and said to him, ‘Get out of your country and from your relatives, and come to a land that I will show you.’

καὶ εἶπεν πρὸς αὐτόν· Ἔξελθε ἐκ τῆς γῆς σου καὶ ⸀ἐκ τῆς συγγενείας σου, καὶ δεῦρο εἰς ⸀τὴν γῆν ἣν ἄν σοι δείξω.

Phonetic (Greek): tote exelthon ek ges Chaldaion katῴkesen en Charran. kakeithen meta to apothanein ton patera aytoy metῴkisen ayton eis ten gen tayten eis hen hymeis nyn katoikeite,
Edified Edition (EDE)Then he came out of the land of the Chaldeans and dwelt in Haran. And from there, after his father was dead, He moved him to this land in which you now dwell.

τότε ἐξελθὼν ἐκ γῆς Χαλδαίων κατῴκησεν ἐν Χαρράν. κἀκεῖθεν μετὰ τὸ ἀποθανεῖν τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ μετῴκισεν αὐτὸν εἰς τὴν γῆν ταύτην εἰς ἣν ὑμεῖς νῦν κατοικεῖτε,

Phonetic (Greek): kai oyk edoken aytῷ kleronomian en aytῇ oyde bema podos, kai epengeilato doynai aytῷ eis kataschesin ayten kai tῷ spermati aytoy metʼ ayton, oyk ontos aytῷ teknou.
Edified Edition (EDE)And God gave him no inheritance in it, not even enough to set his foot on. But even when Abraham had no child, He promised to give it to him for a possession, and to his descendants after him.

καὶ οὐκ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ κληρονομίαν ἐν αὐτῇ οὐδὲ βῆμα ποδός, καὶ ἐπηγγείλατο δοῦναι αὐτῷ εἰς κατάσχεσιν αὐτὴν καὶ τῷ σπέρματι αὐτοῦ μετʼ αὐτόν, οὐκ ὄντος αὐτῷ τέκνου.

Phonetic (Greek): elalesen ⸀de ohytos ho theos hoti estai to sperma aytoy paroikon en gῇ allotriᾳ, kai doulosousin ayto kai kakosousin ete tetrakosia·
Edified Edition (EDE)But God spoke in this way: that his descendants would dwell in a foreign land, and that they would bring them into bondage and oppress them four hundred years.

ἐλάλησεν ⸀δὲ οὕτως ὁ θεὸς ὅτι ἔσται τὸ σπέρμα αὐτοῦ πάροικον ἐν γῇ ἀλλοτρίᾳ, καὶ δουλώσουσιν αὐτὸ καὶ κακώσουσιν ἔτη τετρακόσια·

Phonetic (Greek): kai to ethnos ho ⸀ean ⸀douleysousin krino ego, ⸂ho theos eipen⸃, kai meta tayta exeleysontai kai latreysousin moi en tῷ topῳ toytῳ.
Edified Edition (EDE)‘And the nation to whom they will be in bondage I will judge,’ said God, ‘and after that they shall come out and serve Me in this place.’

καὶ τὸ ἔθνος ᾧ ⸀ἐὰν ⸀δουλεύσουσιν κρινῶ ἐγώ, ⸂ὁ θεὸς εἶπεν⸃, καὶ μετὰ ταῦτα ἐξελεύσονται καὶ λατρεύσουσίν μοι ἐν τῷ τόπῳ τούτῳ.

Phonetic (Greek): kai edoken aytῷ diatheken peritomes· kai ohytos egennesen ton Ἰsaak kai perietemen ayton tῇ hemerᾳ tῇ ogdoῃ, ⸀kai Ἰsaak ton Ἰakob, ⸁kai Ἰakob toys dodeka patriarchas.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then He gave him the covenant of circumcision; and so Abraham begot Isaac and circumcised him on the eighth day; and Isaac begot Jacob, and Jacob begot the twelve patriarchs.

καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ διαθήκην περιτομῆς· καὶ οὕτως ἐγέννησεν τὸν Ἰσαὰκ καὶ περιέτεμεν αὐτὸν τῇ ἡμέρᾳ τῇ ὀγδόῃ, ⸀καὶ Ἰσαὰκ τὸν Ἰακώβ, ⸁καὶ Ἰακὼβ τοὺς δώδεκα πατριάρχας.

Phonetic (Greek): Kai ohi patriarchai zelosantes ton Ἰoseph apedonto eis Aigypton· kai en ho theos metʼ aytoy,
Edified Edition (EDE)And the patriarchs, becoming envious, sold Joseph into Egypt. But God was with him

Καὶ οἱ πατριάρχαι ζηλώσαντες τὸν Ἰωσὴφ ἀπέδοντο εἰς Αἴγυπτον· καὶ ἦν ὁ θεὸς μετʼ αὐτοῦ,

Phonetic (Greek): kai exeilato ayton ek pason ton thlipseon aytoy, kai edoken aytῷ charin kai sophian enantion Pharao basileos Aigyptou, kai katestesen ayton hegoymenon epʼ Aigypton ⸀kai holon ton oikon aytoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)and delivered him out of all his troubles, and gave him favour and wisdom in the presence of Pharaoh, king of Egypt; and he made him governor over Egypt and all his house.

καὶ ἐξείλατο αὐτὸν ἐκ πασῶν τῶν θλίψεων αὐτοῦ, καὶ ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ χάριν καὶ σοφίαν ἐναντίον Φαραὼ βασιλέως Αἰγύπτου, καὶ κατέστησεν αὐτὸν ἡγούμενον ἐπʼ Αἴγυπτον ⸀καὶ ὅλον τὸν οἶκον αὐτοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): elthen de limos ephʼ holen ten ⸀Aigypton kai Chanaan kai thlipsis megale, kai oych ehyriskon chortasmata ohi pateres hemon·
Edified Edition (EDE)Now a famine and great trouble came over all the land of Egypt and Canaan, and our fathers found no sustenance.

ἦλθεν δὲ λιμὸς ἐφʼ ὅλην τὴν ⸀Αἴγυπτον καὶ Χανάαν καὶ θλῖψις μεγάλη, καὶ οὐχ ηὕρισκον χορτάσματα οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν·

Phonetic (Greek): akoysas de Ἰakob onta ⸂sitia eis Aigypton⸃ exapesteilen toys pateras hemon proton·
Edified Edition (EDE)But when Jacob heard that there was grain in Egypt, he sent out our fathers first.

ἀκούσας δὲ Ἰακὼβ ὄντα ⸂σιτία εἰς Αἴγυπτον⸃ ἐξαπέστειλεν τοὺς πατέρας ἡμῶν πρῶτον·

Phonetic (Greek): kai en tῷ deuterῳ ⸀anegnoristhe Ἰoseph tois adelphois aytoy, kai phaneron egeneto tῷ Pharao to ⸀genos Ἰoseph.
Edified Edition (EDE)And at the second time Joseph was made known to his brothers, and Joseph’s family became known to the Pharaoh.

καὶ ἐν τῷ δευτέρῳ ⸀ἀνεγνωρίσθη Ἰωσὴφ τοῖς ἀδελφοῖς αὐτοῦ, καὶ φανερὸν ἐγένετο τῷ Φαραὼ τὸ ⸀γένος Ἰωσήφ.

Phonetic (Greek): aposteilas de Ἰoseph metekalesato ⸂Ἰakob ton patera aytoy⸃ kai pasan ten syngeneian en psychais hebdomekonta pente,
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Joseph sent and called his father Jacob and all his relatives to him, seventy-five people.

ἀποστείλας δὲ Ἰωσὴφ μετεκαλέσατο ⸂Ἰακὼβ τὸν πατέρα αὐτοῦ⸃ καὶ πᾶσαν τὴν συγγένειαν ἐν ψυχαῖς ἑβδομήκοντα πέντε,

Phonetic (Greek): ⸂kai katebe⸃ Ἰakob eis Aigypton. kai eteleytesen aytos kai ohi pateres hemon,
Edified Edition (EDE)So Jacob went down to Egypt; and he died, he and our fathers.

⸂καὶ κατέβη⸃ Ἰακὼβ εἰς Αἴγυπτον. καὶ ἐτελεύτησεν αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ πατέρες ἡμῶν,

Phonetic (Greek): kai metetethesan eis Sychem kai etethesan en tῷ mnemati ⸀ho onesato Ἀbraam times argyriou para ton yhion Ἑmmor ⸀en Sychem.
Edified Edition (EDE)And they were carried back to Shechem and laid in the tomb that Abraham bought for a sum of money from the sons of Hamor, the father of Shechem.

καὶ μετετέθησαν εἰς Συχὲμ καὶ ἐτέθησαν ἐν τῷ μνήματι ⸀ᾧ ὠνήσατο Ἀβραὰμ τιμῆς ἀργυρίου παρὰ τῶν υἱῶν Ἑμμὼρ ⸀ἐν Συχέμ.

Phonetic (Greek): Kathos de engizen ho chronos tes epangelias hes ⸀homologesen ho theos tῷ Ἀbraam, eyxesen ho laos kai eplethynthe en Aigyptῳ,
Edified Edition (EDE)But when the time of the promise drew near which God had sworn to Abraham, the people grew and multiplied in Egypt

Καθὼς δὲ ἤγγιζεν ὁ χρόνος τῆς ἐπαγγελίας ἧς ⸀ὡμολόγησεν ὁ θεὸς τῷ Ἀβραάμ, ηὔξησεν ὁ λαὸς καὶ ἐπληθύνθη ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ,

Phonetic (Greek): achri ohy aneste basileys heteros ⸂epʼ Aigypton⸃, hos oyk edei ton Ἰoseph.
Edified Edition (EDE)until another king arose who did not know Joseph.

ἄχρι οὗ ἀνέστη βασιλεὺς ἕτερος ⸂ἐπʼ Αἴγυπτον⸃, ὃς οὐκ ᾔδει τὸν Ἰωσήφ.

Phonetic (Greek): ohytos katasophisamenos to genos hemon ekakosen toys ⸀pateras toy poiein ⸂ta brephe ektheta⸃ ayton eis to me zῳogoneisthai.
Edified Edition (EDE)This man dealt treacherously with our people and oppressed our fathers, making them expose their babies, so that they might not live.

οὗτος κατασοφισάμενος τὸ γένος ἡμῶν ἐκάκωσεν τοὺς ⸀πατέρας τοῦ ποιεῖν ⸂τὰ βρέφη ἔκθετα⸃ αὐτῶν εἰς τὸ μὴ ζῳογονεῖσθαι.

Phonetic (Greek): en ho kairῷ egennethe Moyses, kai en asteios tῷ theῷ· hos anetraphe menas treis en tῷ oikῳ toy patros·
Edified Edition (EDE)At this time Moses was born, and was well pleasing to God; and he was brought up in his father’s house for three months.

ἐν ᾧ καιρῷ ἐγεννήθη Μωϋσῆς, καὶ ἦν ἀστεῖος τῷ θεῷ· ὃς ἀνετράφη μῆνας τρεῖς ἐν τῷ οἴκῳ τοῦ πατρός·

Phonetic (Greek): ⸂ektethentos de aytoy aneilato ayton⸃ he thygater Pharao kai anethrepsato ayton heautῇ eis yhion.
Edified Edition (EDE)But when he was set out, Pharaoh’s daughter took him away and brought him up as her own son.

⸂ἐκτεθέντος δὲ αὐτοῦ ἀνείλατο αὐτὸν⸃ ἡ θυγάτηρ Φαραὼ καὶ ἀνεθρέψατο αὐτὸν ἑαυτῇ εἰς υἱόν.

Phonetic (Greek): kai epaideythe ⸀Moyses pasῃ sophiᾳ Aigyption, en de dynatos en logois kai ergois ⸀aytoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)And Moses was learned in all the wisdom of the Egyptians, and was mighty in words and deeds.

καὶ ἐπαιδεύθη ⸀Μωϋσῆς πάσῃ σοφίᾳ Αἰγυπτίων, ἦν δὲ δυνατὸς ἐν λόγοις καὶ ἔργοις ⸀αὐτοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): Ὡs de epleroyto aytῷ tesserakontaetes chronos, anebe epi ten kardian aytoy episkepsasthai toys adelphoys aytoy toys yhioys Ἰsrael.
Edified Edition (EDE)Now when he was forty years old, it came into his heart to visit his brothers, the children of Israel.

Ὡς δὲ ἐπληροῦτο αὐτῷ τεσσερακονταετὴς χρόνος, ἀνέβη ἐπὶ τὴν καρδίαν αὐτοῦ ἐπισκέψασθαι τοὺς ἀδελφοὺς αὐτοῦ τοὺς υἱοὺς Ἰσραήλ.

Phonetic (Greek): kai idon tina adikoymenon emynato kai epoiesen ekdikesin tῷ kataponoumenῳ pataxas ton Aigyption.
Edified Edition (EDE)And seeing one of them suffer wrong, he defended him, and avenged him who was oppressed, and struck the Egyptian.

καὶ ἰδών τινα ἀδικούμενον ἠμύνατο καὶ ἐποίησεν ἐκδίκησιν τῷ καταπονουμένῳ πατάξας τὸν Αἰγύπτιον.

Phonetic (Greek): enomizen de synienai toys ⸀adelphoys hoti ho theos dia cheiros aytoy didosin ⸂soterian aytois⸃, ohi de oy synekan.
Edified Edition (EDE)For he supposed that his brothers would have understood that God would deliver them by his hand, but they did not understand.

ἐνόμιζεν δὲ συνιέναι τοὺς ⸀ἀδελφοὺς ὅτι ὁ θεὸς διὰ χειρὸς αὐτοῦ δίδωσιν ⸂σωτηρίαν αὐτοῖς⸃, οἱ δὲ οὐ συνῆκαν.

Phonetic (Greek): tῇ te epioysῃ hemerᾳ ophthe aytois machomenois kai ⸀synellassen aytoys eis eirenen eipon· Ἄndres, adelphoi ⸀este· hinati adikeite allelous;
Edified Edition (EDE)And the next day he appeared to two of them as they were fighting, and tried to reconcile them, saying, ‘Men, you are brothers; why do you wrong one another?’

τῇ τε ἐπιούσῃ ἡμέρᾳ ὤφθη αὐτοῖς μαχομένοις καὶ ⸀συνήλλασσεν αὐτοὺς εἰς εἰρήνην εἰπών· Ἄνδρες, ἀδελφοί ⸀ἐστε· ἱνατί ἀδικεῖτε ἀλλήλους;

Phonetic (Greek): ho de adikon ton plesion aposato ayton eipon· Tis se katestesen archonta kai dikasten ephʼ ⸀hemon;
Edified Edition (EDE)But he who did his neighbour wrong pushed him away, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge over us?

ὁ δὲ ἀδικῶν τὸν πλησίον ἀπώσατο αὐτὸν εἰπών· Τίς σε κατέστησεν ἄρχοντα καὶ δικαστὴν ἐφʼ ⸀ἡμῶν;

Phonetic (Greek): me anelein me sy theleis hon tropon aneiles ⸀echthes ton Aigyption;
Edified Edition (EDE)Do you want to kill me as you killed the Egyptian yesterday?’

μὴ ἀνελεῖν με σὺ θέλεις ὃν τρόπον ἀνεῖλες ⸀ἐχθὲς τὸν Αἰγύπτιον;

Phonetic (Greek): ephygen de Moyses en tῷ logῳ toytῳ, kai egeneto paroikos en gῇ Madiam, ohy egennesen yhioys dyo.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then, at this saying, Moses fled and became a dweller in the land of Midian, where he had two sons.

ἔφυγεν δὲ Μωϋσῆς ἐν τῷ λόγῳ τούτῳ, καὶ ἐγένετο πάροικος ἐν γῇ Μαδιάμ, οὗ ἐγέννησεν υἱοὺς δύο.

Phonetic (Greek): Kai plerothenton eton tesserakonta ophthe aytῷ en tῇ eremῳ toy orous Sina ⸀angelos en phlogi pyros batou·
Edified Edition (EDE)And when forty years had passed, an Angel of the Lord appeared to him in a flame of fire in a bush, in the wilderness of Mount Sinai.

Καὶ πληρωθέντων ἐτῶν τεσσεράκοντα ὤφθη αὐτῷ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ τοῦ ὄρους Σινᾶ ⸀ἄγγελος ἐν φλογὶ πυρὸς βάτου·

Phonetic (Greek): ho de Moyses idon ⸀ethaymasen to horama. proserchomenou de aytoy katanoesai egeneto phone ⸀kyriou·
Edified Edition (EDE)When Moses saw it, he marvelled at the sight; and as he drew near to observe, the voice of the Lord came to him,

ὁ δὲ Μωϋσῆς ἰδὼν ⸀ἐθαύμασεν τὸ ὅραμα. προσερχομένου δὲ αὐτοῦ κατανοῆσαι ἐγένετο φωνὴ ⸀κυρίου·

Phonetic (Greek): Ἐgo ho theos ton pateron sou, ho theos Ἀbraam ⸀kai Ἰsaak ⸁kai Ἰakob. entromos de genomenos Moyses oyk etolma katanoesai.
Edified Edition (EDE)saying, ‘I am the God of your fathers, the God of Abraham, the God of Isaac, and the God of Jacob.’ And Moses trembled and dared not look.

Ἐγὼ ὁ θεὸς τῶν πατέρων σου, ὁ θεὸς Ἀβραὰμ ⸀καὶ Ἰσαὰκ ⸁καὶ Ἰακώβ. ἔντρομος δὲ γενόμενος Μωϋσῆς οὐκ ἐτόλμα κατανοῆσαι.

33
Phonetic (Greek): eipen de aytῷ ho kyrios· Lyson to hypodema ton podon sou, ho gar topos ⸀ephʼ ho hestekas ge hagia estin.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the Lord said to him, ‘Take your sandals off your feet, for the place where you stand is holy ground.

εἶπεν δὲ αὐτῷ ὁ κύριος· Λῦσον τὸ ὑπόδημα τῶν ποδῶν σου, ὁ γὰρ τόπος ⸀ἐφʼ ᾧ ἕστηκας γῆ ἁγία ἐστίν.

34
Phonetic (Greek): idon eidon ten kakosin toy laoy mou toy en Aigyptῳ, kai toy stenagmoy ⸀aytoy ekousa, kai kateben exelesthai aytoys· kai nyn deyro ⸀aposteilo se eis Aigypton.
Edified Edition (EDE)I have surely seen the oppression of My people who are in Egypt; I have heard their groaning and have come down to deliver them. And now come, I will send you to Egypt.’

ἰδὼν εἶδον τὴν κάκωσιν τοῦ λαοῦ μου τοῦ ἐν Αἰγύπτῳ, καὶ τοῦ στεναγμοῦ ⸀αὐτοῦ ἤκουσα, καὶ κατέβην ἐξελέσθαι αὐτούς· καὶ νῦν δεῦρο ⸀ἀποστείλω σε εἰς Αἴγυπτον.

Phonetic (Greek): Toyton ton Moysen, hon ernesanto eipontes· Tis se katestesen archonta kai dikasten, toyton ho theos ⸀kai archonta kai lytroten ⸂apestalken syn⸃ cheiri angelou toy ophthentos aytῷ en tῇ batῳ.
Edified Edition (EDE)This Moses whom they rejected, saying, ‘Who made you a ruler and a judge?’ is the one God sent to be a ruler and a deliverer by the hand of the Angel who appeared to him in the bush.

Τοῦτον τὸν Μωϋσῆν, ὃν ἠρνήσαντο εἰπόντες· Τίς σε κατέστησεν ἄρχοντα καὶ δικαστήν, τοῦτον ὁ θεὸς ⸀καὶ ἄρχοντα καὶ λυτρωτὴν ⸂ἀπέσταλκεν σὺν⸃ χειρὶ ἀγγέλου τοῦ ὀφθέντος αὐτῷ ἐν τῇ βάτῳ.

36
Phonetic (Greek): ohytos exegagen aytoys poiesas terata kai semeia en ⸀gῇ Aigyptῳ kai en Ἐrythrᾷ Thalassῃ kai en tῇ eremῳ ete tesserakonta.
Edified Edition (EDE)He brought them out, after he had shown wonders and signs in the land of Egypt, and in the Red Sea, and in the wilderness forty years.

οὗτος ἐξήγαγεν αὐτοὺς ποιήσας τέρατα καὶ σημεῖα ἐν ⸀γῇ Αἰγύπτῳ καὶ ἐν Ἐρυθρᾷ Θαλάσσῃ καὶ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ ἔτη τεσσεράκοντα.

37
Phonetic (Greek): ohytos estin ho Moyses ho ⸀eipas tois yhiois Ἰsrael· Propheten hymin anastesei ⸂ho theos⸃ ek ton adelphon hymon hos eme.
Edified Edition (EDE)This is that Moses who said to the children of Israel, ‘The LORD your God will raise up for you a Prophet like me from your brothers. Him you shall hear.’

οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ Μωϋσῆς ὁ ⸀εἴπας τοῖς υἱοῖς Ἰσραήλ· Προφήτην ὑμῖν ἀναστήσει ⸂ὁ θεὸς⸃ ἐκ τῶν ἀδελφῶν ὑμῶν ὡς ἐμέ.

38
Phonetic (Greek): ohytos estin ho genomenos en tῇ ekklesiᾳ en tῇ eremῳ meta toy angelou toy laloyntos aytῷ en tῷ orei Sina kai ton pateron hemon, hos edexato ⸀logia zonta doynai ⸀hemin,
Edified Edition (EDE)This is he who was in the congregation in the wilderness with the Angel who spoke to him on Mount Sinai, and with our fathers, the one who received the living oracles to give to us,

οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ γενόμενος ἐν τῇ ἐκκλησίᾳ ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ μετὰ τοῦ ἀγγέλου τοῦ λαλοῦντος αὐτῷ ἐν τῷ ὄρει Σινᾶ καὶ τῶν πατέρων ἡμῶν, ὃς ἐδέξατο ⸀λόγια ζῶντα δοῦναι ⸀ἡμῖν,
