Chapter 4
1
Phonetic (Greek): Parakalo oyn hymas ego ho desmios en kyriῳ axios peripatesai tes kleseos hes eklethete,
Edified Edition (EDE)I, therefore, the prisoner of the Lord, beseech you to walk worthy of the calling with which you were called,

Παρακαλῶ οὖν ὑμᾶς ἐγὼ ὁ δέσμιος ἐν κυρίῳ ἀξίως περιπατῆσαι τῆς κλήσεως ἧς ἐκλήθητε,

Phonetic (Greek): meta pases tapeinophrosynes kai praytetos, meta makrothymias, anechomenoi allelon en agapῃ,
Edified Edition (EDE)with all lowliness and gentleness, with longsuffering, bearing with one another in love,

μετὰ πάσης ταπεινοφροσύνης καὶ πραΰτητος, μετὰ μακροθυμίας, ἀνεχόμενοι ἀλλήλων ἐν ἀγάπῃ,

Phonetic (Greek): spoudazontes terein ten henoteta toy pneymatos en tῷ syndesmῳ tes eirenes·
Edified Edition (EDE)endeavouring to keep the unity of the Spirit in the bond of peace.

σπουδάζοντες τηρεῖν τὴν ἑνότητα τοῦ πνεύματος ἐν τῷ συνδέσμῳ τῆς εἰρήνης·

Phonetic (Greek): hen soma kai hen pneyma, kathos kai eklethete en miᾷ elpidi tes kleseos hymon·
Edified Edition (EDE)There is one body and one Spirit, just as you were called in one hope of your calling;

ἓν σῶμα καὶ ἓν πνεῦμα, καθὼς καὶ ἐκλήθητε ἐν μιᾷ ἐλπίδι τῆς κλήσεως ὑμῶν·

Phonetic (Greek): ehis kyrios, mia pistis, hen baptisma·
Edified Edition (EDE)one Lord, one faith, one baptism;

εἷς κύριος, μία πίστις, ἓν βάπτισμα·

Phonetic (Greek): ehis theos kai pater panton, ho epi panton kai dia panton kai en ⸀pasin.
Edified Edition (EDE)one God and Father of all, who is above all, and through all, and in you all.

εἷς θεὸς καὶ πατὴρ πάντων, ὁ ἐπὶ πάντων καὶ διὰ πάντων καὶ ἐν ⸀πᾶσιν.

Phonetic (Greek): Ἑni de hekastῳ hemon edothe ⸀he charis kata to metron tes doreas toy Christoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)But to each one of us grace was given according to the measure of Christ’s gift.

Ἑνὶ δὲ ἑκάστῳ ἡμῶν ἐδόθη ⸀ἡ χάρις κατὰ τὸ μέτρον τῆς δωρεᾶς τοῦ Χριστοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): dio legei· Ἀnabas eis hypsos echmaloteusen aichmalosian, ⸀edoken domata tois anthropois.
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore He says: "When He ascended on high, He led captivity captive, and gave gifts to men."

διὸ λέγει· Ἀναβὰς εἰς ὕψος ᾐχμαλώτευσεν αἰχμαλωσίαν, ⸀ἔδωκεν δόματα τοῖς ἀνθρώποις.

Phonetic (Greek): to de Ἀnebe ti estin ei me hoti kai ⸀katebe eis ta katotera mere tes ges;
Edified Edition (EDE)(Now this, "He ascended", what does it mean but that He also first descended into the lower parts of the earth?

τὸ δὲ Ἀνέβη τί ἐστιν εἰ μὴ ὅτι καὶ ⸀κατέβη εἰς τὰ κατώτερα μέρη τῆς γῆς;

Phonetic (Greek): ho katabas aytos estin kai ho anabas hyperano panton ton oyranon, hina plerosῃ ta panta.
Edified Edition (EDE)He who descended is also the One who ascended far above all the heavens, that He might fill all things.)

ὁ καταβὰς αὐτός ἐστιν καὶ ὁ ἀναβὰς ὑπεράνω πάντων τῶν οὐρανῶν, ἵνα πληρώσῃ τὰ πάντα.

Phonetic (Greek): kai aytos edoken toys men apostolous, toys de prophetas, toys de eyangelistas, toys de poimenas kai didaskalous,
Edified Edition (EDE)And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers,

καὶ αὐτὸς ἔδωκεν τοὺς μὲν ἀποστόλους, τοὺς δὲ προφήτας, τοὺς δὲ εὐαγγελιστάς, τοὺς δὲ ποιμένας καὶ διδασκάλους,

Phonetic (Greek): pros ton katartismon ton hagion eis ergon diakonias, eis oikodomen toy somatos toy Christoy,
Edified Edition (EDE)for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ,

πρὸς τὸν καταρτισμὸν τῶν ἁγίων εἰς ἔργον διακονίας, εἰς οἰκοδομὴν τοῦ σώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ,

Phonetic (Greek): mechri katantesomen ohi pantes eis ten henoteta tes pisteos kai tes epignoseos toy yhioy toy theoy, eis andra teleion, eis metron helikias toy pleromatos toy Christoy,
Edified Edition (EDE)till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ;

μέχρι καταντήσωμεν οἱ πάντες εἰς τὴν ἑνότητα τῆς πίστεως καὶ τῆς ἐπιγνώσεως τοῦ υἱοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ, εἰς ἄνδρα τέλειον, εἰς μέτρον ἡλικίας τοῦ πληρώματος τοῦ Χριστοῦ,

Phonetic (Greek): hina meketi omen nepioi, klydonizomenoi kai peripheromenoi panti anemῳ tes didaskalias en tῇ kybeiᾳ ton anthropon en panourgiᾳ pros ten methodeian tes planes,
Edified Edition (EDE)that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting,

ἵνα μηκέτι ὦμεν νήπιοι, κλυδωνιζόμενοι καὶ περιφερόμενοι παντὶ ἀνέμῳ τῆς διδασκαλίας ἐν τῇ κυβείᾳ τῶν ἀνθρώπων ἐν πανουργίᾳ πρὸς τὴν μεθοδείαν τῆς πλάνης,

Phonetic (Greek): aletheyontes de en agapῃ ayxesomen eis ayton ta panta, hos estin he kephale, ⸀Christos,
Edified Edition (EDE)but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head, Christ,

ἀληθεύοντες δὲ ἐν ἀγάπῃ αὐξήσωμεν εἰς αὐτὸν τὰ πάντα, ὅς ἐστιν ἡ κεφαλή, ⸀Χριστός,

Phonetic (Greek): ex ohy pan to soma synarmologoymenon kai symbibazomenon dia pases haphes tes epichoregias katʼ energeian en metrῳ henos hekastou merous ten ayxesin toy somatos poieitai eis oikodomen heautoy en agapῃ.
Edified Edition (EDE)from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.

ἐξ οὗ πᾶν τὸ σῶμα συναρμολογούμενον καὶ συμβιβαζόμενον διὰ πάσης ἁφῆς τῆς ἐπιχορηγίας κατʼ ἐνέργειαν ἐν μέτρῳ ἑνὸς ἑκάστου μέρους τὴν αὔξησιν τοῦ σώματος ποιεῖται εἰς οἰκοδομὴν ἑαυτοῦ ἐν ἀγάπῃ.

Phonetic (Greek): Toyto oyn lego kai martyromai en kyriῳ, meketi hymas peripatein kathos kai ⸀ta ethne peripatei en mataioteti toy noos ayton,
Edified Edition (EDE)This I say, therefore, and testify in the Lord, that you should no longer walk as the rest of the Gentiles walk, in the futility of their mind,

Τοῦτο οὖν λέγω καὶ μαρτύρομαι ἐν κυρίῳ, μηκέτι ὑμᾶς περιπατεῖν καθὼς καὶ ⸀τὰ ἔθνη περιπατεῖ ἐν ματαιότητι τοῦ νοὸς αὐτῶν,

Phonetic (Greek): ⸀eskotomenoi tῇ dianoiᾳ ontes, apellotriomenoi tes zoes toy theoy, dia ten agnoian ten oysan en aytois, dia ten porosin tes kardias ayton,
Edified Edition (EDE)having their understanding darkened, being alienated from the life of God because of the ignorance that is in them, because of the blindness of their heart;

⸀ἐσκοτωμένοι τῇ διανοίᾳ ὄντες, ἀπηλλοτριωμένοι τῆς ζωῆς τοῦ θεοῦ, διὰ τὴν ἄγνοιαν τὴν οὖσαν ἐν αὐτοῖς, διὰ τὴν πώρωσιν τῆς καρδίας αὐτῶν,

Phonetic (Greek): ohitines apelgekotes heautoys paredokan tῇ aselgeiᾳ eis ergasian akatharsias pases en pleonexiᾳ.
Edified Edition (EDE)who, being past feeling, have given themselves over to lewdness, to work all uncleanness with greediness.

οἵτινες ἀπηλγηκότες ἑαυτοὺς παρέδωκαν τῇ ἀσελγείᾳ εἰς ἐργασίαν ἀκαθαρσίας πάσης ἐν πλεονεξίᾳ.

Phonetic (Greek): hymeis de oych ohytos emathete ton Christon,
Edified Edition (EDE)But you have not so learned Christ,

ὑμεῖς δὲ οὐχ οὕτως ἐμάθετε τὸν Χριστόν,

Phonetic (Greek): ei ge ayton ekoysate kai en aytῷ edidachthete, kathos estin aletheia en tῷ Ἰesoy,
Edified Edition (EDE)if indeed you have heard Him and have been taught by Him, as the truth is in Jesus:

εἴ γε αὐτὸν ἠκούσατε καὶ ἐν αὐτῷ ἐδιδάχθητε, καθώς ἐστιν ἀλήθεια ἐν τῷ Ἰησοῦ,

Phonetic (Greek): apothesthai hymas kata ten proteran anastrophen ton palaion anthropon ton phtheiromenon kata tas epithymias tes apates,
Edified Edition (EDE)that you put off, concerning your former conduct, the old man which grows corrupt according to the deceitful lusts,

ἀποθέσθαι ὑμᾶς κατὰ τὴν προτέραν ἀναστροφὴν τὸν παλαιὸν ἄνθρωπον τὸν φθειρόμενον κατὰ τὰς ἐπιθυμίας τῆς ἀπάτης,

Phonetic (Greek): ananeoysthai de tῷ pneymati toy noos hymon,
Edified Edition (EDE)and be renewed in the spirit of your mind,

ἀνανεοῦσθαι δὲ τῷ πνεύματι τοῦ νοὸς ὑμῶν,

Phonetic (Greek): kai endysasthai ton kainon anthropon ton kata theon ktisthenta en dikaiosynῃ kai hosioteti tes aletheias.
Edified Edition (EDE)and that you put on the new man which was created according to God, in true righteousness and holiness.

καὶ ἐνδύσασθαι τὸν καινὸν ἄνθρωπον τὸν κατὰ θεὸν κτισθέντα ἐν δικαιοσύνῃ καὶ ὁσιότητι τῆς ἀληθείας.

Phonetic (Greek): Dio apothemenoi to pseydos laleite aletheian hekastos meta toy plesion aytoy, hoti esmen allelon mele.
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore, putting away lying, "Let each one of you speak truth with his neighbour," for we are members of one another.

Διὸ ἀποθέμενοι τὸ ψεῦδος λαλεῖτε ἀλήθειαν ἕκαστος μετὰ τοῦ πλησίον αὐτοῦ, ὅτι ἐσμὲν ἀλλήλων μέλη.

Phonetic (Greek): orgizesthe kai me hamartanete· ho helios me epidyeto ⸀epi parorgismῷ hymon,
Edified Edition (EDE)"Be angry, and do not sin": do not let the sun go down on your wrath,

ὀργίζεσθε καὶ μὴ ἁμαρτάνετε· ὁ ἥλιος μὴ ἐπιδυέτω ⸀ἐπὶ παροργισμῷ ὑμῶν,

Phonetic (Greek): mede didote topon tῷ diabolῳ.
Edified Edition (EDE)nor give place to the devil.

μηδὲ δίδοτε τόπον τῷ διαβόλῳ.

28
Phonetic (Greek): ho klepton meketi klepteto, mallon de kopiato ergazomenos ⸂tais idiais chersin to agathon⸃, hina echῃ metadidonai tῷ chreian echonti.
Edified Edition (EDE)Let him who stole steal no longer, but rather let him labour, working with his hands what is good, that he may have something to give him who has need.

ὁ κλέπτων μηκέτι κλεπτέτω, μᾶλλον δὲ κοπιάτω ἐργαζόμενος ⸂ταῖς ἰδίαις χερσὶν τὸ ἀγαθόν⸃, ἵνα ἔχῃ μεταδιδόναι τῷ χρείαν ἔχοντι.

Phonetic (Greek): pas logos sapros ek toy stomatos hymon me ekporeuestho, alla ei tis agathos pros oikodomen tes chreias, hina dῷ charin tois akoyousin.
Edified Edition (EDE)Let no corrupt word proceed out of your mouth, but what is good for necessary edification, that it may impart grace to the hearers.

πᾶς λόγος σαπρὸς ἐκ τοῦ στόματος ὑμῶν μὴ ἐκπορευέσθω, ἀλλὰ εἴ τις ἀγαθὸς πρὸς οἰκοδομὴν τῆς χρείας, ἵνα δῷ χάριν τοῖς ἀκούουσιν.

30
Phonetic (Greek): kai me lypeite to pneyma to hagion toy theoy, en ho esphragisthete eis hemeran apolytroseos.
Edified Edition (EDE)And do not grieve the Holy Spirit of God, by whom you were sealed for the day of redemption.

καὶ μὴ λυπεῖτε τὸ πνεῦμα τὸ ἅγιον τοῦ θεοῦ, ἐν ᾧ ἐσφραγίσθητε εἰς ἡμέραν ἀπολυτρώσεως.

31
Phonetic (Greek): pasa pikria kai thymos kai orge kai krauge kai blasphemia artheto aphʼ hymon syn pasῃ kakiᾳ.
Edified Edition (EDE)Let all bitterness, wrath, anger, clamour, and evil speaking be put away from you, with all malice.

πᾶσα πικρία καὶ θυμὸς καὶ ὀργὴ καὶ κραυγὴ καὶ βλασφημία ἀρθήτω ἀφʼ ὑμῶν σὺν πάσῃ κακίᾳ.

32
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀ginesthe eis allelous chrestoi, eysplanchnoi, charizomenoi heautois kathos kai ho theos en Christῷ echarisato ⸀hymin.
Edified Edition (EDE)And be kind to one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God in Christ forgave you.

⸀γίνεσθε εἰς ἀλλήλους χρηστοί, εὔσπλαγχνοι, χαριζόμενοι ἑαυτοῖς καθὼς καὶ ὁ θεὸς ἐν Χριστῷ ἐχαρίσατο ⸀ὑμῖν.
