James

Chapter 2
1
Phonetic (Greek): Ἀdelphoi mou, me en prosopolempsiais echete ten pistin toy kyriou hemon Ἰesoy Christoy tes doxes;
Edified Edition (EDE)My brothers, have not the faith of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory, with respect of persons.

Ἀδελφοί μου, μὴ ἐν προσωπολημψίαις ἔχετε τὴν πίστιν τοῦ κυρίου ἡμῶν Ἰησοῦ Χριστοῦ τῆς δόξης;

2
Edified Edition (EDE)For if there come into your assembly a person with a gold ring, in goodly apparel, and there come in also a poor person in vile clothing;

3
Phonetic (Greek): ⸂epiblepsete de⸃ epi ton phoroynta ten estheta ten lampran kai ⸀eipete· Sy kathou hode kalos, kai tῷ ptochῷ eipete· Sy stethi ⸂e kathou ekei⸃ hypo to hypopodion mou,
Edified Edition (EDE)And you have respect to him who wears the fine clothing, and say to him, "Sit you here in a good place"; and say to the poor, "Stand you there, or sit here under my footstool":

⸂ἐπιβλέψητε δὲ⸃ ἐπὶ τὸν φοροῦντα τὴν ἐσθῆτα τὴν λαμπρὰν καὶ ⸀εἴπητε· Σὺ κάθου ὧδε καλῶς, καὶ τῷ πτωχῷ εἴπητε· Σὺ στῆθι ⸂ἢ κάθου ἐκεῖ⸃ ὑπὸ τὸ ὑποπόδιόν μου,

4
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀oy diekrithete en heautois kai egenesthe kritai dialogismon poneron;
Edified Edition (EDE)Are you not then partial in yourselves, and are become judges of evil thoughts?

⸀οὐ διεκρίθητε ἐν ἑαυτοῖς καὶ ἐγένεσθε κριταὶ διαλογισμῶν πονηρῶν;

5
Phonetic (Greek): akoysate, adelphoi mou agapetoi. oych ho theos exelexato toys ptochoys ⸂tῷ kosmῳ⸃ plousious en pistei kai kleronomous tes basileias hes epengeilato tois agaposin ayton;
Edified Edition (EDE)Hearken, my beloved brothers, Has not God chosen the poor of this world rich in faith, and heirs of the kingdom which He has promised to those who love Him?

ἀκούσατε, ἀδελφοί μου ἀγαπητοί. οὐχ ὁ θεὸς ἐξελέξατο τοὺς πτωχοὺς ⸂τῷ κόσμῳ⸃ πλουσίους ἐν πίστει καὶ κληρονόμους τῆς βασιλείας ἧς ἐπηγγείλατο τοῖς ἀγαπῶσιν αὐτόν;

6
Phonetic (Greek): hymeis de etimasate ton ptochon. oych ohi ploysioi katadynasteyousin hymon, kai aytoi helkousin hymas eis kriteria;
Edified Edition (EDE)But you have despised the poor. Do not rich people oppress you, and draw you before the judgement seats?

ὑμεῖς δὲ ἠτιμάσατε τὸν πτωχόν. οὐχ οἱ πλούσιοι καταδυναστεύουσιν ὑμῶν, καὶ αὐτοὶ ἕλκουσιν ὑμᾶς εἰς κριτήρια;

7
Phonetic (Greek): oyk aytoi blasphemoysin to kalon onoma to epiklethen ephʼ hymas;
Edified Edition (EDE)Do not they blaspheme that worthy name by the which you are called?

οὐκ αὐτοὶ βλασφημοῦσιν τὸ καλὸν ὄνομα τὸ ἐπικληθὲν ἐφʼ ὑμᾶς;

8
Phonetic (Greek): Ei mentoi nomon teleite basilikon kata ten graphen Ἀgapeseis ton plesion sou hos seauton, kalos poieite·
Edified Edition (EDE)If you fulfil the royal law according to the scripture, "You shall love your neighbour as yourself," you do well:

Εἰ μέντοι νόμον τελεῖτε βασιλικὸν κατὰ τὴν γραφήν Ἀγαπήσεις τὸν πλησίον σου ὡς σεαυτόν, καλῶς ποιεῖτε·

9
Phonetic (Greek): ei de prosopolempteite, hamartian ergazesthe, elenchomenoi hypo toy nomou hos parabatai.
Edified Edition (EDE)But if you have respect to persons, you commit sin, and are convinced of the law as transgressors.

10
Phonetic (Greek): hostis gar holon ton nomon ⸂teresῃ, ptaisῃ⸃ de en heni, gegonen panton enochos.
Edified Edition (EDE)For whoever shall keep the whole law, and yet offend in one point, he is guilty of all.

11
Phonetic (Greek): ho gar eipon· Me ⸀moicheysῃs eipen kai· Me ⸀phoneysῃs· ei de oy ⸂moicheyeis phoneyeis⸃ de, gegonas parabates nomou.
Edified Edition (EDE)For He who said, "Do not commit adultery," said also, "Do not kill." Now if you commit no adultery, yet if you kill, you are become a transgressor of the law.

12
Phonetic (Greek): ohytos laleite kai ohytos poieite hos dia nomou eleutherias mellontes krinesthai.
Edified Edition (EDE)So speak you, and so do, as those who shall be judged by the law of liberty.

13
Phonetic (Greek): he gar krisis aneleos tῷ me poiesanti eleos· katakauchatai ⸀eleos kriseos.
Edified Edition (EDE)For he shall have judgement without mercy, who has showed no mercy; and mercy rejoices against judgement.

14
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀Ti ophelos, adelphoi mou, ean pistin legῃ tis echein erga de me echῃ; me dynatai he pistis sosai ayton;
Edified Edition (EDE)What does it profit, my brothers, though a person say he has faith, and have not works? Can faith save him?

⸀Τί ὄφελος, ἀδελφοί μου, ἐὰν πίστιν λέγῃ τις ἔχειν ἔργα δὲ μὴ ἔχῃ; μὴ δύναται ἡ πίστις σῶσαι αὐτόν;

15
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀ean adelphos e adelphe gymnoi hyparchosin kai ⸀leipomenoi tes ephemerou trophes,
Edified Edition (EDE)If a brother or sister be naked, and destitute of daily food,

16
Phonetic (Greek): eipῃ de tis aytois ex hymon· Ὑpagete en eirenῃ, thermainesthe kai chortazesthe, me dote de aytois ta epitedeia toy somatos, ⸀ti ophelos;
Edified Edition (EDE)And one of you say to them, "Depart in peace, be you warmed and filled"; notwithstanding you give them not those things which are needful to the body; what does it profit?

εἴπῃ δέ τις αὐτοῖς ἐξ ὑμῶν· Ὑπάγετε ἐν εἰρήνῃ, θερμαίνεσθε καὶ χορτάζεσθε, μὴ δῶτε δὲ αὐτοῖς τὰ ἐπιτήδεια τοῦ σώματος, ⸀τί ὄφελος;

17
Phonetic (Greek): ohytos kai he pistis, ean me ⸂echῃ erga⸃, nekra estin kathʼ heauten.
Edified Edition (EDE)Even so faith, if it has not works, is dead, being alone.

18
Phonetic (Greek): Ἀllʼ erei tis· Sy pistin echeis kago erga echo. deixon moi ten pistin sou ⸀choris ton ⸀ergon, kago ⸂soi deixo⸃ ek ton ergon mou ten ⸀pistin.
Edified Edition (EDE)Yes, a person may say, "You have faith, and I have works": show me your faith without your works, and I will show you my faith by my works.

19
Phonetic (Greek): sy pisteyeis hoti ⸂ehis estin ho theos⸃; kalos poieis· kai ta daimonia pisteyousin kai phrissousin.
Edified Edition (EDE)You believe that there is one God; you do well: the demons also believe, and tremble.

20
Phonetic (Greek): theleis de gnonai, o anthrope kene, hoti he pistis choris ton ergon ⸀arge estin;
Edified Edition (EDE)But will you know, O vain person, that faith without works is dead?

θέλεις δὲ γνῶναι, ὦ ἄνθρωπε κενέ, ὅτι ἡ πίστις χωρὶς τῶν ἔργων ⸀ἀργή ἐστιν;

21
Phonetic (Greek): Ἀbraam ho pater hemon oyk ex ergon edikaiothe, anenenkas Ἰsaak ton yhion aytoy epi to thysiasterion;
Edified Edition (EDE)Was not Abraham our father justified by works, when he had offered Isaac his son upon the altar?

Ἀβραὰμ ὁ πατὴρ ἡμῶν οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων ἐδικαιώθη, ἀνενέγκας Ἰσαὰκ τὸν υἱὸν αὐτοῦ ἐπὶ τὸ θυσιαστήριον;

22
Phonetic (Greek): blepeis hoti he pistis synergei tois ergois aytoy kai ek ton ergon he pistis eteleiothe,
Edified Edition (EDE)Do you see how faith worked with his works, and by works was faith made perfect?

23
Phonetic (Greek): kai eplerothe he graphe he legousa· Ἐpisteusen de Ἀbraam tῷ theῷ, kai elogisthe aytῷ eis dikaiosynen, kai philos theoy eklethe.
Edified Edition (EDE)And the scripture was fulfilled which says, "Abraham believed God, and it was imputed to him for righteousness": and he was called the Friend of God.

24
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀horate hoti ex ergon dikaioytai anthropos kai oyk ek pisteos monon.
Edified Edition (EDE)You see then how that by works a person is justified, and not by faith only.

25
Phonetic (Greek): homoios de kai Ῥaab he porne oyk ex ergon edikaiothe, hypodexamene toys angelous kai heterᾳ hodῷ ekbaloysa;
Edified Edition (EDE)Likewise also was not Rahab the harlot justified by works, when she had received the messengers, and had sent them out another way?

ὁμοίως δὲ καὶ Ῥαὰβ ἡ πόρνη οὐκ ἐξ ἔργων ἐδικαιώθη, ὑποδεξαμένη τοὺς ἀγγέλους καὶ ἑτέρᾳ ὁδῷ ἐκβαλοῦσα;

26
Phonetic (Greek): hosper ⸀gar to soma choris pneymatos nekron estin, ohytos kai he pistis ⸀choris ergon nekra estin.
Edified Edition (EDE)For as the body without the spirit is dead, so faith without works is dead also.
