Chapter 4
1
Phonetic (Greek): Pothen polemoi kai ⸀pothen machai en hymin; oyk enteythen, ek ton hedonon hymon ton strateuomenon en tois melesin hymon;
Edified Edition (EDE)From where come wars and fightings among you? come they not hence, even of your lusts that war in your members?

Πόθεν πόλεμοι καὶ ⸀πόθεν μάχαι ἐν ὑμῖν; οὐκ ἐντεῦθεν, ἐκ τῶν ἡδονῶν ὑμῶν τῶν στρατευομένων ἐν τοῖς μέλεσιν ὑμῶν;

2
Phonetic (Greek): epithymeite, kai oyk echete· phoneyete kai zeloyte, kai oy dynasthe epitychein· machesthe kai polemeite. oyk echete dia to me aiteisthai hymas·
Edified Edition (EDE)You lust, and have not: you kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: you fight and war, yet you have not, because you ask not.

3
Phonetic (Greek): aiteite kai oy lambanete, dioti kakos aiteisthe, hina en tais hedonais hymon dapanesete.
Edified Edition (EDE)You ask, and receive not, because you ask amiss, that you may consume it upon your lusts.

4
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀moichalides, oyk oidate hoti he philia toy kosmou echthra toy theoy estin; hos ⸀ean oyn boulethῇ philos einai toy kosmou, echthros toy theoy kathistatai.
Edified Edition (EDE)You adulterers and adulteresses, know you not that the friendship of the world is enmity with God? whoever therefore will be a friend of the world is the enemy of God.

5
Phonetic (Greek): e dokeite hoti kenos he graphe legei· Pros phthonon epipothei to pneyma ho ⸀katῴkisen en hemin;
Edified Edition (EDE)Do you think that the scripture says in vain, "The spirit that dwells in us lusts to envy"?

ἢ δοκεῖτε ὅτι κενῶς ἡ γραφὴ λέγει· Πρὸς φθόνον ἐπιποθεῖ τὸ πνεῦμα ὃ ⸀κατῴκισεν ἐν ἡμῖν;

6
Phonetic (Greek): meizona de didosin charin· dio legei· Ὁ theos hyperephanois antitassetai tapeinois de didosin charin.
Edified Edition (EDE)But He gives more grace. Therefore He says, "God resists the proud, but gives grace to the humble."

7
Phonetic (Greek): hypotagete oyn tῷ theῷ· antistete de tῷ diabolῳ, kai pheyxetai aphʼ hymon·
Edified Edition (EDE)Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.

8
Phonetic (Greek): engisate tῷ theῷ, kai ⸀engiei hymin. katharisate cheiras, hamartoloi, kai hagnisate kardias, dipsychoi.
Edified Edition (EDE)Draw near to God, and He will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners; and purify your hearts, you double minded.

9
Phonetic (Greek): talaiporesate kai penthesate kai klaysate· ho gelos hymon eis penthos ⸀metatrapeto kai he chara eis katepheian·
Edified Edition (EDE)Be afflicted, and mourn, and weep: let your laughter be turned to mourning, and your joy to heaviness.

10
Phonetic (Greek): tapeinothete enopion ⸀kyriou, kai hypsosei hymas.
Edified Edition (EDE)Humble yourselves in the sight of the Lord, and He shall lift you up.

11
Phonetic (Greek): Me katalaleite allelon, adelphoi· ho katalalon adelphoy ⸀e krinon ton adelphon aytoy katalalei nomou kai krinei nomon· ei de nomon krineis, oyk ei poietes nomou alla krites.
Edified Edition (EDE)Speak not evil one of another, brothers. He who speaks evil of his brother, and judges his brother, speaks evil of the law, and judges the law: but if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law, but a judge.

12
Phonetic (Greek): ehis ⸀estin nomothetes ⸂kai krites⸃, ho dynamenos sosai kai apolesai· sy de tis ei, ⸂ho krinon⸃ ton ⸀plesion;
Edified Edition (EDE)There is one lawgiver, who is able to save and to destroy: who are you that judge another?

εἷς ⸀ἐστιν νομοθέτης ⸂καὶ κριτής⸃, ὁ δυνάμενος σῶσαι καὶ ἀπολέσαι· σὺ δὲ τίς εἶ, ⸂ὁ κρίνων⸃ τὸν ⸀πλησίον;

13
Phonetic (Greek): Ἄge nyn ohi legontes· Semeron ⸀e ayrion ⸀poreusometha eis tende ten polin kai ⸀poiesomen ekei ⸀eniauton kai ⸀emporeusometha kai ⸀kerdesomen·
Edified Edition (EDE)Go to now, you who say, "Today or tomorrow we will go into such a city, and continue there a year, and buy and sell, and get gain":

14
Phonetic (Greek): ohitines oyk epistasthe ⸀to tes ayrion ⸀poia he zoe hymon· atmis gar ⸀este ⸀he pros oligon phainomene, ⸀epeita kai aphanizomene·
Edified Edition (EDE)Whereas you know not what shall be on the tomorrow. For what is your life? It is even a vapour, that appears for a little time, and then vanishes away.

15
Phonetic (Greek): anti toy legein hymas· Ἐan ho kyrios ⸀thelesῃ, kai ⸀zesomen kai ⸀poiesomen toyto e ekeino.
Edified Edition (EDE)For that you ought to say, "If the Lord will, we shall live, and do this, or that."

16
Phonetic (Greek): nyn de kauchasthe en tais alazoneiais hymon· pasa kaychesis toiayte ponera estin.
Edified Edition (EDE)But now you rejoice in your boastings: all such rejoicing is evil.

17
Phonetic (Greek): eidoti oyn kalon poiein kai me poioynti, hamartia aytῷ estin.
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore to him who knows to do good, and does it not, to him it is sin.
