Chapter 13

Phonetic (Greek): Pro de tes heortes toy pascha eidos ho Ἰesoys hoti ⸀elthen aytoy he hora hina metabῇ ek toy kosmou toytou pros ton patera agapesas toys idious toys en tῷ kosmῳ eis telos egapesen aytoys.
Edified Edition (EDE)Now before the Feast of the Passover, when Jesus knew that His hour had come that He should depart from this world to the Father, having loved His own who were in the world, He loved them to the end.

Πρὸ δὲ τῆς ἑορτῆς τοῦ πάσχα εἰδὼς ὁ Ἰησοῦς ὅτι ⸀ἦλθεν αὐτοῦ ἡ ὥρα ἵνα μεταβῇ ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου πρὸς τὸν πατέρα ἀγαπήσας τοὺς ἰδίους τοὺς ἐν τῷ κόσμῳ εἰς τέλος ἠγάπησεν αὐτούς.

Edified Edition (EDE)And during supper, the devil having already put it into the heart of Judas Iscariot, Simon’s son, to betray Him,

καὶ δείπνου ⸀γινομένου, τοῦ διαβόλου ἤδη βεβληκότος εἰς τὴν καρδίαν ⸂ἵνα παραδοῖ αὐτὸν Ἰούδας Σίμωνος ⸀Ἰσκαριώτου⸃,

Phonetic (Greek): ⸀eidos hoti panta ⸀edoken aytῷ ho pater eis tas cheiras, kai hoti apo theoy exelthen kai pros ton theon hypagei,
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus, knowing that the Father had given all things into His hands, and that He had come from God and was going to God,

⸀εἰδὼς ὅτι πάντα ⸀ἔδωκεν αὐτῷ ὁ πατὴρ εἰς τὰς χεῖρας, καὶ ὅτι ἀπὸ θεοῦ ἐξῆλθεν καὶ πρὸς τὸν θεὸν ὑπάγει,

Phonetic (Greek): egeiretai ek toy deipnou kai tithesin ta himatia kai labon lention diezosen heauton·
Edified Edition (EDE)rose from supper and laid aside His outer garments, and took a towel and girded Himself.

ἐγείρεται ἐκ τοῦ δείπνου καὶ τίθησιν τὰ ἱμάτια καὶ λαβὼν λέντιον διέζωσεν ἑαυτόν·

Phonetic (Greek): eita ballei hydor eis ton niptera, kai erxato niptein toys podas ton matheton kai ekmassein tῷ lentiῳ ho en diezosmenos.
Edified Edition (EDE)After that, He poured water into a basin and began to wash the disciples’ feet, and to wipe them with the towel with which He was girded.

εἶτα βάλλει ὕδωρ εἰς τὸν νιπτῆρα, καὶ ἤρξατο νίπτειν τοὺς πόδας τῶν μαθητῶν καὶ ἐκμάσσειν τῷ λεντίῳ ᾧ ἦν διεζωσμένος.

Phonetic (Greek): erchetai oyn pros Simona Petron. ⸀legei ⸀aytῷ· Kyrie, sy mou nipteis toys podas;
Edified Edition (EDE)Then He came to Simon Peter. And Peter said to Him, "Lord, are You washing my feet?"

ἔρχεται οὖν πρὸς Σίμωνα Πέτρον. ⸀λέγει ⸀αὐτῷ· Κύριε, σύ μου νίπτεις τοὺς πόδας;

Phonetic (Greek): apekrithe Ἰesoys kai eipen aytῷ· Ὃ ego poio sy oyk oidas arti, gnosῃ de meta tayta.
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus answered and said to him, [JESUS]"What I am doing you do not understand now, but you will know after this."[/JESUS]

ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ὃ ἐγὼ ποιῶ σὺ οὐκ οἶδας ἄρτι, γνώσῃ δὲ μετὰ ταῦτα.

Phonetic (Greek): legei aytῷ Petros· Oy me nipsῃs ⸂mou toys podas⸃ eis ton aiona. apekrithe ⸂Ἰesoys aytῷ⸃· Ἐan me nipso se, oyk echeis meros metʼ emoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)Peter said to Him, "You shall never wash my feet!" Jesus answered him, [JESUS]"If I do not wash you, you have no part with Me."[/JESUS]

λέγει αὐτῷ Πέτρος· Οὐ μὴ νίψῃς ⸂μου τοὺς πόδας⸃ εἰς τὸν αἰῶνα. ἀπεκρίθη ⸂Ἰησοῦς αὐτῷ⸃· Ἐὰν μὴ νίψω σε, οὐκ ἔχεις μέρος μετʼ ἐμοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): legei aytῷ Simon Petros· Kyrie, me toys podas mou monon alla kai tas cheiras kai ten kephalen.
Edified Edition (EDE)Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, not my feet only, but also my hands and my head!"

λέγει αὐτῷ Σίμων Πέτρος· Κύριε, μὴ τοὺς πόδας μου μόνον ἀλλὰ καὶ τὰς χεῖρας καὶ τὴν κεφαλήν.

Phonetic (Greek): legei aytῷ ⸀ho Ἰesoys· Ὁ leloumenos ⸂oyk echei chreian⸃ ⸂ei me⸃ toys podas nipsasthai, allʼ estin katharos holos· kai hymeis katharoi este, allʼ oychi pantes.
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus said to him, [JESUS]"He who is bathed needs only to wash his feet, but is completely clean; and you are clean, but not all of you."[/JESUS]

λέγει αὐτῷ ⸀ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ὁ λελουμένος ⸂οὐκ ἔχει χρείαν⸃ ⸂εἰ μὴ⸃ τοὺς πόδας νίψασθαι, ἀλλʼ ἔστιν καθαρὸς ὅλος· καὶ ὑμεῖς καθαροί ἐστε, ἀλλʼ οὐχὶ πάντες.

Edified Edition (EDE)For He knew who would betray Him; therefore He said, [JESUS]"You are not all clean."[/JESUS]

ᾔδει γὰρ τὸν παραδιδόντα αὐτόν· διὰ τοῦτο εἶπεν ⸀ὅτι Οὐχὶ πάντες καθαροί ἐστε.

Phonetic (Greek): Ὅte oyn enipsen toys podas ayton ⸀kai elaben ta himatia aytoy ⸂kai anepesen⸃, palin eipen aytois· Ginoskete ti pepoieka hymin;
Edified Edition (EDE)So when He had washed their feet, taken His garments, and sat down again, He said to them, [JESUS]"Do you know what I have done to you?"[/JESUS]

Ὅτε οὖν ἔνιψεν τοὺς πόδας αὐτῶν ⸀καὶ ἔλαβεν τὰ ἱμάτια αὐτοῦ ⸂καὶ ἀνέπεσεν⸃, πάλιν εἶπεν αὐτοῖς· Γινώσκετε τί πεποίηκα ὑμῖν;

Phonetic (Greek): hymeis phoneite me Ὁ didaskalos kai Ὁ kyrios, kai kalos legete, eimi gar.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"You call Me Teacher and Lord, and you say well, for so I am."[/JESUS]

ὑμεῖς φωνεῖτέ με Ὁ διδάσκαλος καὶ Ὁ κύριος, καὶ καλῶς λέγετε, εἰμὶ γάρ.

Phonetic (Greek): ei oyn ego enipsa hymon toys podas ho kyrios kai ho didaskalos, kai hymeis opheilete allelon niptein toys podas·
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"If I then, your Lord and Teacher, have washed your feet, you also ought to wash one another’s feet."[/JESUS]

εἰ οὖν ἐγὼ ἔνιψα ὑμῶν τοὺς πόδας ὁ κύριος καὶ ὁ διδάσκαλος, καὶ ὑμεῖς ὀφείλετε ἀλλήλων νίπτειν τοὺς πόδας·

Phonetic (Greek): hypodeigma gar edoka hymin hina kathos ego epoiesa hymin kai hymeis poiete.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"For I have given you an example, that you should do as I have done to you."[/JESUS]

ὑπόδειγμα γὰρ ἔδωκα ὑμῖν ἵνα καθὼς ἐγὼ ἐποίησα ὑμῖν καὶ ὑμεῖς ποιῆτε.

Phonetic (Greek): amen amen lego hymin, oyk estin doylos meizon toy kyriou aytoy oyde apostolos meizon toy pempsantos ayton.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"Truly, truly, I say to you, a servant is not greater than his master; nor is he who is sent greater than he who sent him."[/JESUS]

ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, οὐκ ἔστιν δοῦλος μείζων τοῦ κυρίου αὐτοῦ οὐδὲ ἀπόστολος μείζων τοῦ πέμψαντος αὐτόν.

Phonetic (Greek): ei tayta oidate, makarioi este ean poiete ayta.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"If you know these things, blessed are you if you do them."[/JESUS]

εἰ ταῦτα οἴδατε, μακάριοί ἐστε ἐὰν ποιῆτε αὐτά.

Phonetic (Greek): oy peri panton hymon lego· ego oida ⸀tinas exelexamen· allʼ hina he graphe plerothῇ· Ὁ trogon ⸀mou ton arton eperen epʼ eme ten pternan aytoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"I do not speak concerning all of you. I know whom I have chosen; but that the Scripture may be fulfilled: ‘He who eats bread with Me has lifted up his heel against Me.’"[/JESUS]

οὐ περὶ πάντων ὑμῶν λέγω· ἐγὼ οἶδα ⸀τίνας ἐξελεξάμην· ἀλλʼ ἵνα ἡ γραφὴ πληρωθῇ· Ὁ τρώγων ⸀μου τὸν ἄρτον ἐπῆρεν ἐπʼ ἐμὲ τὴν πτέρναν αὐτοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): apʼ arti lego hymin pro toy genesthai, hina ⸂pisteysete hotan genetai⸃ hoti ego eimi.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"Now I tell you before it comes, that when it does come to pass, you may believe that I am He."[/JESUS]

ἀπʼ ἄρτι λέγω ὑμῖν πρὸ τοῦ γενέσθαι, ἵνα ⸂πιστεύσητε ὅταν γένηται⸃ ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι.

Phonetic (Greek): amen amen lego hymin, ho lambanon ⸀an tina pempso eme lambanei, ho de eme lambanon lambanei ton pempsanta me.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"Truly, truly, I say to you, he who receives whomever I send receives Me; and he who receives Me receives Him who sent Me."[/JESUS]

ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν, ὁ λαμβάνων ⸀ἄν τινα πέμψω ἐμὲ λαμβάνει, ὁ δὲ ἐμὲ λαμβάνων λαμβάνει τὸν πέμψαντά με.

Phonetic (Greek): Tayta eipon ⸀ho Ἰesoys etarachthe tῷ pneymati kai emartyresen kai eipen· Ἀmen amen lego hymin hoti ehis ex hymon paradosei me.
Edified Edition (EDE)When Jesus had said these things, He was troubled in spirit, and testified and said, [JESUS]"Truly, truly, I say to you, one of you will betray Me."[/JESUS]

Ταῦτα εἰπὼν ⸀ὁ Ἰησοῦς ἐταράχθη τῷ πνεύματι καὶ ἐμαρτύρησεν καὶ εἶπεν· Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω ὑμῖν ὅτι εἷς ἐξ ὑμῶν παραδώσει με.

Phonetic (Greek): ⸀eblepon eis allelous ohi mathetai aporoymenoi peri tinos legei.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the disciples looked at one another, perplexed about whom He spoke.

⸀ἔβλεπον εἰς ἀλλήλους οἱ μαθηταὶ ἀπορούμενοι περὶ τίνος λέγει.

Phonetic (Greek): ⸀en anakeimenos ehis ⸀ek ton matheton aytoy en tῷ kolpῳ toy Ἰesoy, hon egapa ho Ἰesoys·
Edified Edition (EDE)Now there was leaning on Jesus’ bosom one of His disciples, whom Jesus loved.

⸀ἦν ἀνακείμενος εἷς ⸀ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ ἐν τῷ κόλπῳ τοῦ Ἰησοῦ, ὃν ἠγάπα ὁ Ἰησοῦς·

Edified Edition (EDE)Simon Peter therefore motioned to him to ask who it was of whom He spoke.

νεύει οὖν τούτῳ Σίμων Πέτρος ⸂πυθέσθαι τίς ἂν εἴη⸃ περὶ οὗ λέγει.

Phonetic (Greek): ⸀anapeson ekeinos ohytos epi to stethos toy Ἰesoy legei aytῷ· Kyrie, tis estin;
Edified Edition (EDE)Then, leaning back on Jesus’ breast, he said to Him, "Lord, who is it?"

⸀ἀναπεσὼν ἐκεῖνος οὕτως ἐπὶ τὸ στῆθος τοῦ Ἰησοῦ λέγει αὐτῷ· Κύριε, τίς ἐστιν;

Phonetic (Greek): ⸀apokrinetai ho Ἰesoys· Ἐkeinos estin ho ego ⸀bapso to psomion ⸂kai doso aytῷ⸃· ⸂bapsas oyn⸃ to ⸀psomion didosin Ἰoydᾳ Simonos ⸀Ἰskariotou.
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus answered, [JESUS]"It is he to whom I shall give a piece of bread when I have dipped it."[/JESUS] And having dipped the bread, He gave it to Judas Iscariot, the son of Simon.

⸀ἀποκρίνεται ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ἐκεῖνός ἐστιν ᾧ ἐγὼ ⸀βάψω τὸ ψωμίον ⸂καὶ δώσω αὐτῷ⸃· ⸂βάψας οὖν⸃ τὸ ⸀ψωμίον δίδωσιν Ἰούδᾳ Σίμωνος ⸀Ἰσκαριώτου.

Phonetic (Greek): kai meta to psomion tote eiselthen eis ekeinon ho Satanas. legei oyn aytῷ ⸀ho Ἰesoys· Ὃ poieis poieson tachion.
Edified Edition (EDE)Now after the piece of bread, Satan entered him. Then Jesus said to him, [JESUS]"What you do, do quickly."[/JESUS]

καὶ μετὰ τὸ ψωμίον τότε εἰσῆλθεν εἰς ἐκεῖνον ὁ Σατανᾶς. λέγει οὖν αὐτῷ ⸀ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ὃ ποιεῖς ποίησον τάχιον.

Phonetic (Greek): toyto de oydeis egno ton anakeimenon pros ti eipen aytῷ·
Edified Edition (EDE)But no one at the table knew for what reason He said this to him.

τοῦτο δὲ οὐδεὶς ἔγνω τῶν ἀνακειμένων πρὸς τί εἶπεν αὐτῷ·

Phonetic (Greek): tines gar edokoun, epei to glossokomon ⸀eichen Ἰoydas, hoti legei aytῷ ⸀ho Ἰesoys· Ἀgorason hon chreian echomen eis ten heorten, e tois ptochois hina ti dῷ.
Edified Edition (EDE)For some thought, because Judas had the money box, that Jesus had said to him, "Buy those things we need for the feast," or that he should give something to the poor.

τινὲς γὰρ ἐδόκουν, ἐπεὶ τὸ γλωσσόκομον ⸀εἶχεν Ἰούδας, ὅτι λέγει αὐτῷ ⸀ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Ἀγόρασον ὧν χρείαν ἔχομεν εἰς τὴν ἑορτήν, ἢ τοῖς πτωχοῖς ἵνα τι δῷ.

Phonetic (Greek): labon oyn to psomion ekeinos ⸂exelthen eythys⸃. en de nyx.
Edified Edition (EDE)Having received the piece of bread, he then went out immediately. And it was night.

λαβὼν οὖν τὸ ψωμίον ἐκεῖνος ⸂ἐξῆλθεν εὐθύς⸃. ἦν δὲ νύξ.

Phonetic (Greek): Ὅte ⸀oyn exelthen ⸀legei Ἰesoys· Nyn edoxasthe ho yhios toy anthropou, kai ho theos edoxasthe en aytῷ·
Edified Edition (EDE)So, when he had gone out, Jesus said, [JESUS]"Now the Son of Man is glorified, and God is glorified in Him."[/JESUS]

Ὅτε ⸀οὖν ἐξῆλθεν ⸀λέγει Ἰησοῦς· Νῦν ἐδοξάσθη ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ἀνθρώπου, καὶ ὁ θεὸς ἐδοξάσθη ἐν αὐτῷ·

Phonetic (Greek): ⸂ei ho theos edoxasthe en aytῷ,⸃ kai ho theos doxasei ayton en ⸀ahytῷ, kai eythys doxasei ayton.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"If God is glorified in Him, God will also glorify Him in Himself, and glorify Him immediately."[/JESUS]

⸂εἰ ὁ θεὸς ἐδοξάσθη ἐν αὐτῷ,⸃ καὶ ὁ θεὸς δοξάσει αὐτὸν ἐν ⸀αὑτῷ, καὶ εὐθὺς δοξάσει αὐτόν.

Phonetic (Greek): teknia, eti mikron methʼ hymon eimi· zetesete me, kai kathos eipon tois Ἰoudaiois hoti Ὅpou ⸂ego hypago⸃ hymeis oy dynasthe elthein, kai hymin lego arti.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"Little children, I shall be with you a little while longer. You will seek Me; and as I said to the Jews, ‘Where I am going, you cannot come,’ so now I say to you."[/JESUS]

τεκνία, ἔτι μικρὸν μεθʼ ὑμῶν εἰμι· ζητήσετέ με, καὶ καθὼς εἶπον τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις ὅτι Ὅπου ⸂ἐγὼ ὑπάγω⸃ ὑμεῖς οὐ δύνασθε ἐλθεῖν, καὶ ὑμῖν λέγω ἄρτι.

Phonetic (Greek): entolen kainen didomi hymin hina agapate allelous, kathos egapesa hymas hina kai hymeis agapate allelous.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another; as I have loved you, that you also love one another."[/JESUS]

ἐντολὴν καινὴν δίδωμι ὑμῖν ἵνα ἀγαπᾶτε ἀλλήλους, καθὼς ἠγάπησα ὑμᾶς ἵνα καὶ ὑμεῖς ἀγαπᾶτε ἀλλήλους.

Phonetic (Greek): en toytῳ gnosontai pantes hoti emoi mathetai este, ean agapen echete en allelois.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"By this all will know that you are My disciples, if you have love for one another."[/JESUS]

ἐν τούτῳ γνώσονται πάντες ὅτι ἐμοὶ μαθηταί ἐστε, ἐὰν ἀγάπην ἔχητε ἐν ἀλλήλοις.

Phonetic (Greek): Legei aytῷ Simon Petros· Kyrie, poy hypageis; ⸀apekrithe Ἰesoys· Ὅpou hypago oy dynasai moi nyn akolouthesai, ⸂akoloutheseis de hysteron⸃.
Edified Edition (EDE)Simon Peter said to Him, "Lord, where are You going?" Jesus answered him, [JESUS]"Where I am going you cannot follow Me now, but you shall follow Me afterward."[/JESUS]

Λέγει αὐτῷ Σίμων Πέτρος· Κύριε, ποῦ ὑπάγεις; ⸀ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς· Ὅπου ὑπάγω οὐ δύνασαί μοι νῦν ἀκολουθῆσαι, ⸂ἀκολουθήσεις δὲ ὕστερον⸃.

Phonetic (Greek): legei aytῷ ⸀ho Petros· Kyrie, dia ti oy dynamai soi ⸀akolouthesai arti; ten psychen mou hyper soy theso.
Edified Edition (EDE)Peter said to Him, "Lord, why can I not follow You now? I will lay down my life for Your sake."

λέγει αὐτῷ ⸀ὁ Πέτρος· Κύριε, διὰ τί οὐ δύναμαί σοι ⸀ἀκολουθῆσαι ἄρτι; τὴν ψυχήν μου ὑπὲρ σοῦ θήσω.

Phonetic (Greek): ⸀apokrinetai Ἰesoys· Ten psychen sou hyper emoy theseis; amen amen lego soi, oy me alektor phonesῃ heos ohy ⸀arnesῃ me tris.
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus answered him, [JESUS]"Will you lay down your life for My sake? Truly, truly, I say to you, the rooster shall not crow till you have denied Me three times."[/JESUS]

⸀ἀποκρίνεται Ἰησοῦς· Τὴν ψυχήν σου ὑπὲρ ἐμοῦ θήσεις; ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω σοι, οὐ μὴ ἀλέκτωρ φωνήσῃ ἕως οὗ ⸀ἀρνήσῃ με τρίς.
