Chapter 18
1
Phonetic (Greek): Tayta ⸀eipon Ἰesoys exelthen syn tois mathetais aytoy peran toy cheimarrou ⸀toy Kedron hopou en kepos, eis hon eiselthen aytos kai ohi mathetai aytoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)When Jesus had spoken these words, He went out with His disciples over the Brook Kidron, where there was a garden, into which He and His disciples entered.

Ταῦτα ⸀εἰπὼν Ἰησοῦς ἐξῆλθεν σὺν τοῖς μαθηταῖς αὐτοῦ πέραν τοῦ χειμάρρου ⸀τοῦ Κεδρὼν ὅπου ἦν κῆπος, εἰς ὃν εἰσῆλθεν αὐτὸς καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): edei de kai Ἰoydas ho paradidoys ayton ton topon, hoti pollakis ⸀synechthe Ἰesoys ekei meta ton matheton aytoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)And Judas, who betrayed Him, also knew the place; for Jesus often met there with His disciples.

ᾔδει δὲ καὶ Ἰούδας ὁ παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν τὸν τόπον, ὅτι πολλάκις ⸀συνήχθη Ἰησοῦς ἐκεῖ μετὰ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): ho oyn Ἰoydas labon ten speiran kai ek ton archiereon kai ⸂ek ton⸃ Pharisaion hyperetas erchetai ekei meta phanon kai lampadon kai hoplon.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Judas, having received a detachment of troops, and officers from the chief priests and Pharisees, came there with lanterns, torches, and weapons.

ὁ οὖν Ἰούδας λαβὼν τὴν σπεῖραν καὶ ἐκ τῶν ἀρχιερέων καὶ ⸂ἐκ τῶν⸃ Φαρισαίων ὑπηρέτας ἔρχεται ἐκεῖ μετὰ φανῶν καὶ λαμπάδων καὶ ὅπλων.

Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus therefore, knowing all things that would come upon Him, went forward and said to them, [JESUS]"Whom are you seeking?"[/JESUS]

Ἰησοῦς ⸀οὖν εἰδὼς πάντα τὰ ἐρχόμενα ἐπʼ αὐτὸν ⸂ἐξῆλθεν, καὶ λέγει⸃ αὐτοῖς· Τίνα ζητεῖτε;

Phonetic (Greek): apekrithesan aytῷ· Ἰesoyn ton Nazoraion. legei ⸀aytois· Ἐgo eimi. ehistekei de kai Ἰoydas ho paradidoys ayton metʼ ayton.
Edified Edition (EDE)They answered Him, "Jesus of Nazareth." Jesus said to them, [JESUS]"I am He."[/JESUS] And Judas, who betrayed Him, also stood with them.

ἀπεκρίθησαν αὐτῷ· Ἰησοῦν τὸν Ναζωραῖον. λέγει ⸀αὐτοῖς· Ἐγώ εἰμι. εἱστήκει δὲ καὶ Ἰούδας ὁ παραδιδοὺς αὐτὸν μετʼ αὐτῶν.

Phonetic (Greek): hos oyn eipen ⸀aytois· Ἐgo eimi, apelthon eis ta opiso kai epesan chamai.
Edified Edition (EDE)Now when He said to them, [JESUS]"I am He,"[/JESUS] they drew back and fell to the ground.

ὡς οὖν εἶπεν ⸀αὐτοῖς· Ἐγώ εἰμι, ἀπῆλθον εἰς τὰ ὀπίσω καὶ ἔπεσαν χαμαί.

Edified Edition (EDE)Then He asked them again, [JESUS]"Whom are you seeking?"[/JESUS] And they said, "Jesus of Nazareth."

πάλιν οὖν ⸂ἐπηρώτησεν αὐτούς⸃· Τίνα ζητεῖτε; οἱ δὲ εἶπαν· Ἰησοῦν τὸν Ναζωραῖον.

Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus answered, [JESUS]"I have told you that I am He. Therefore, if you seek Me, let these go their way,"[/JESUS]

ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς· Εἶπον ὑμῖν ὅτι ἐγώ εἰμι· εἰ οὖν ἐμὲ ζητεῖτε, ἄφετε τούτους ὑπάγειν·

Phonetic (Greek): hina plerothῇ ho logos hon eipen hoti Ohys dedokas moi oyk apolesa ex ayton oydena.
Edified Edition (EDE)that the saying might be fulfilled which He spoke, [JESUS]"Of those whom You gave Me I have lost none."[/JESUS]

ἵνα πληρωθῇ ὁ λόγος ὃν εἶπεν ὅτι Οὓς δέδωκάς μοι οὐκ ἀπώλεσα ἐξ αὐτῶν οὐδένα.

Phonetic (Greek): Simon oyn Petros echon machairan ehilkysen ayten kai epaisen ton toy archiereos doylon kai apekopsen aytoy to ⸀otarion to dexion. en de onoma tῷ doylῳ Malchos.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Simon Peter, having a sword, drew it and struck the high priest’s servant, and cut off his right ear. The servant’s name was Malchus.

Σίμων οὖν Πέτρος ἔχων μάχαιραν εἵλκυσεν αὐτὴν καὶ ἔπαισεν τὸν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως δοῦλον καὶ ἀπέκοψεν αὐτοῦ τὸ ⸀ὠτάριον τὸ δεξιόν. ἦν δὲ ὄνομα τῷ δούλῳ Μάλχος.

Phonetic (Greek): eipen oyn ho Ἰesoys tῷ Petrῳ· Bale ten ⸀machairan eis ten theken· to poterion ho dedoken moi ho pater oy me pio ayto;
Edified Edition (EDE)So Jesus said to Peter, [JESUS]"Put your sword into the sheath. Shall I not drink the cup which My Father has given Me?"[/JESUS]

εἶπεν οὖν ὁ Ἰησοῦς τῷ Πέτρῳ· Βάλε τὴν ⸀μάχαιραν εἰς τὴν θήκην· τὸ ποτήριον ὃ δέδωκέν μοι ὁ πατὴρ οὐ μὴ πίω αὐτό;

Phonetic (Greek): Ἡ oyn speira kai ho chiliarchos kai ohi hyperetai ton Ἰoudaion synelabon ton Ἰesoyn kai edesan ayton
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the detachment of troops and the captain and the officers of the Jews arrested Jesus and bound Him.

Ἡ οὖν σπεῖρα καὶ ὁ χιλίαρχος καὶ οἱ ὑπηρέται τῶν Ἰουδαίων συνέλαβον τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ ἔδησαν αὐτὸν

Phonetic (Greek): kai ⸀egagon pros Ἅnnan proton· en gar pentheros toy Kaiapha, hos en archiereys toy eniautoy ekeinou·
Edified Edition (EDE)And they led Him away to Annas first, for he was the father-in-law of Caiaphas who was high priest that year.

καὶ ⸀ἤγαγον πρὸς Ἅνναν πρῶτον· ἦν γὰρ πενθερὸς τοῦ Καϊάφα, ὃς ἦν ἀρχιερεὺς τοῦ ἐνιαυτοῦ ἐκείνου·

Phonetic (Greek): en de Kaiaphas ho symbouleysas tois Ἰoudaiois hoti sympherei hena anthropon ⸀apothanein hyper toy laoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)Now it was Caiaphas who advised the Jews that it was expedient that one man should die for the people.

ἦν δὲ Καϊάφας ὁ συμβουλεύσας τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις ὅτι συμφέρει ἕνα ἄνθρωπον ⸀ἀποθανεῖν ὑπὲρ τοῦ λαοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): Ἠkoloythei de tῷ Ἰesoy Simon Petros ⸀kai allos mathetes. ho de mathetes ekeinos en gnostos tῷ archierei kai syneiselthen tῷ Ἰesoy eis ten aylen toy archiereos,
Edified Edition (EDE)And Simon Peter followed Jesus, and so did another disciple. Now that disciple was known to the high priest, and went with Jesus into the courtyard of the high priest.

Ἠκολούθει δὲ τῷ Ἰησοῦ Σίμων Πέτρος ⸀καὶ ἄλλος μαθητής. ὁ δὲ μαθητὴς ἐκεῖνος ἦν γνωστὸς τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ καὶ συνεισῆλθεν τῷ Ἰησοῦ εἰς τὴν αὐλὴν τοῦ ἀρχιερέως,

Edified Edition (EDE)But Peter stood at the door outside. Then the other disciple, who was known to the high priest, went out and spoke to her who kept the door, and brought Peter in.

ὁ δὲ Πέτρος εἱστήκει πρὸς τῇ θύρᾳ ἔξω. ἐξῆλθεν οὖν ὁ μαθητὴς ὁ ἄλλος ⸀ὁ γνωστὸς ⸂τοῦ ἀρχιερέως⸃ καὶ εἶπεν τῇ θυρωρῷ καὶ εἰσήγαγεν τὸν Πέτρον.

Phonetic (Greek): legei oyn ⸂tῷ Petrῳ he paidiske he thyroros⸃· Me kai sy ek ton matheton ei toy anthropou toytou; legei ekeinos· Oyk eimi.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the servant girl who kept the door said to Peter, "You are not also one of this Man’s disciples, are you?" He said, "I am not."

λέγει οὖν ⸂τῷ Πέτρῳ ἡ παιδίσκη ἡ θυρωρός⸃· Μὴ καὶ σὺ ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν εἶ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου; λέγει ἐκεῖνος· Οὐκ εἰμί.

Phonetic (Greek): ehistekeisan de ohi doyloi kai ohi hyperetai anthrakian pepoiekotes, hoti psychos en, kai ethermainonto· en de ⸂kai ho Petros metʼ ayton⸃ hestos kai thermainomenos.
Edified Edition (EDE)Now the servants and officers who had made a fire of coals stood there, for it was cold, and they warmed themselves. And Peter stood with them and warmed himself.

εἱστήκεισαν δὲ οἱ δοῦλοι καὶ οἱ ὑπηρέται ἀνθρακιὰν πεποιηκότες, ὅτι ψῦχος ἦν, καὶ ἐθερμαίνοντο· ἦν δὲ ⸂καὶ ὁ Πέτρος μετʼ αὐτῶν⸃ ἑστὼς καὶ θερμαινόμενος.

Phonetic (Greek): Ὁ oyn archiereys erotesen ton Ἰesoyn peri ton matheton aytoy kai peri tes didaches aytoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)The high priest then asked Jesus about His disciples and His doctrine.

Ὁ οὖν ἀρχιερεὺς ἠρώτησεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν περὶ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ καὶ περὶ τῆς διδαχῆς αὐτοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): apekrithe ⸀aytῷ Ἰesoys· Ἐgo parresiᾳ ⸀lelaleka tῷ kosmῳ· ego pantote edidaxa en synagogῇ kai en tῷ hierῷ, hopou ⸀pantes ohi Ἰoudaioi synerchontai, kai en kryptῷ elalesa oyden·
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus answered him, [JESUS]"I spoke openly to the world. I always taught in synagogues and in the temple, where the Jews always meet, and in secret I have said nothing."[/JESUS]

ἀπεκρίθη ⸀αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς· Ἐγὼ παρρησίᾳ ⸀λελάληκα τῷ κόσμῳ· ἐγὼ πάντοτε ἐδίδαξα ἐν συναγωγῇ καὶ ἐν τῷ ἱερῷ, ὅπου ⸀πάντες οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι συνέρχονται, καὶ ἐν κρυπτῷ ἐλάλησα οὐδέν·

Phonetic (Greek): ti me ⸂erotᾷs; eroteson⸃ toys akekootas ti elalesa aytois· ide ohytoi oidasin ha eipon ego.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"Why do you ask Me? Ask those who have heard Me what I said to them. Indeed they know what I said."[/JESUS]

τί με ⸂ἐρωτᾷς; ἐρώτησον⸃ τοὺς ἀκηκοότας τί ἐλάλησα αὐτοῖς· ἴδε οὗτοι οἴδασιν ἃ εἶπον ἐγώ.

Phonetic (Greek): tayta de aytoy eipontos ehis ⸂parestekos ton hypereton⸃ edoken ῥapisma tῷ Ἰesoy eipon· Ohytos apokrinῃ tῷ archierei;
Edified Edition (EDE)And when He had said these things, one of the officers who stood by struck Jesus with the palm of his hand, saying, "Do You answer the high priest like that?"

ταῦτα δὲ αὐτοῦ εἰπόντος εἷς ⸂παρεστηκὼς τῶν ὑπηρετῶν⸃ ἔδωκεν ῥάπισμα τῷ Ἰησοῦ εἰπών· Οὕτως ἀποκρίνῃ τῷ ἀρχιερεῖ;

Phonetic (Greek): apekrithe ⸀aytῷ Ἰesoys· Ei kakos elalesa, martyreson peri toy kakoy· ei de kalos, ti me dereis;
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus answered him, [JESUS]"If I have spoken evil, bear witness of the evil; but if well, why do you strike Me?"[/JESUS]

ἀπεκρίθη ⸀αὐτῷ Ἰησοῦς· Εἰ κακῶς ἐλάλησα, μαρτύρησον περὶ τοῦ κακοῦ· εἰ δὲ καλῶς, τί με δέρεις;

Phonetic (Greek): apesteilen ⸀oyn ayton ho Ἅnnas dedemenon pros Kaiaphan ton archierea.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Annas sent Him bound to Caiaphas the high priest.

ἀπέστειλεν ⸀οὖν αὐτὸν ὁ Ἅννας δεδεμένον πρὸς Καϊάφαν τὸν ἀρχιερέα.

Phonetic (Greek): Ἦn de Simon Petros hestos kai thermainomenos. eipon oyn aytῷ· Me kai sy ek ton matheton aytoy ei; ⸀ernesato ekeinos kai eipen· Oyk eimi.
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Simon Peter stood and warmed himself. Therefore they said to him, "You are not also one of His disciples, are you?" He denied it and said, "I am not!"

Ἦν δὲ Σίμων Πέτρος ἑστὼς καὶ θερμαινόμενος. εἶπον οὖν αὐτῷ· Μὴ καὶ σὺ ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν αὐτοῦ εἶ; ⸀ἠρνήσατο ἐκεῖνος καὶ εἶπεν· Οὐκ εἰμί.

Phonetic (Greek): legei ehis ek ton doylon toy archiereos, syngenes on ohy apekopsen Petros to otion· Oyk ego se eidon en tῷ kepῳ metʼ aytoy;
Edified Edition (EDE)One of the servants of the high priest, a relative of him whose ear Peter cut off, said, "Did I not see you in the garden with Him?"

λέγει εἷς ἐκ τῶν δούλων τοῦ ἀρχιερέως, συγγενὴς ὢν οὗ ἀπέκοψεν Πέτρος τὸ ὠτίον· Οὐκ ἐγώ σε εἶδον ἐν τῷ κήπῳ μετʼ αὐτοῦ;

Phonetic (Greek): palin oyn ⸀ernesato Petros· kai eytheos alektor ephonesen.
Edified Edition (EDE)Peter then denied again; and immediately a rooster crowed.

πάλιν οὖν ⸀ἠρνήσατο Πέτρος· καὶ εὐθέως ἀλέκτωρ ἐφώνησεν.

Phonetic (Greek): Ἄgousin oyn ton Ἰesoyn apo toy Kaiapha eis to praitorion· en de proi· kai aytoi oyk eiselthon eis to praitorion, hina me mianthosin ⸀alla phagosin to pascha.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then they led Jesus from Caiaphas to the Praetorium, and it was early morning. But they themselves did not go into the Praetorium, lest they should be defiled, but that they might eat the Passover.

Ἄγουσιν οὖν τὸν Ἰησοῦν ἀπὸ τοῦ Καϊάφα εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον· ἦν δὲ πρωΐ· καὶ αὐτοὶ οὐκ εἰσῆλθον εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον, ἵνα μὴ μιανθῶσιν ⸀ἀλλὰ φάγωσιν τὸ πάσχα.

Phonetic (Greek): exelthen oyn ho Pilatos ⸀exo pros aytoys kai ⸀phesin· Tina kategorian pherete ⸀kata toy anthropou toytou;
Edified Edition (EDE)Pilate then went out to them and said, "What accusation do you bring against this Man?"

ἐξῆλθεν οὖν ὁ Πιλᾶτος ⸀ἔξω πρὸς αὐτοὺς καὶ ⸀φησίν· Τίνα κατηγορίαν φέρετε ⸀κατὰ τοῦ ἀνθρώπου τούτου;

Phonetic (Greek): apekrithesan kai eipan aytῷ· Ei me en ohytos ⸂kakon poion⸃, oyk an soi paredokamen ayton.
Edified Edition (EDE)They answered and said to him, "If He were not an evildoer, we would not have delivered Him up to you."

ἀπεκρίθησαν καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ· Εἰ μὴ ἦν οὗτος ⸂κακὸν ποιῶν⸃, οὐκ ἄν σοι παρεδώκαμεν αὐτόν.

Phonetic (Greek): eipen oyn aytois ⸀ho Pilatos· Labete ayton hymeis, kai kata ton nomon hymon krinate ayton. ⸀eipon aytῷ ohi Ἰoudaioi· Ἡmin oyk exestin apokteinai oydena·
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Pilate said to them, "You take Him and judge Him according to your law." Therefore the Jews said to him, "It is not lawful for us to put anyone to death,"

εἶπεν οὖν αὐτοῖς ⸀ὁ Πιλᾶτος· Λάβετε αὐτὸν ὑμεῖς, καὶ κατὰ τὸν νόμον ὑμῶν κρίνατε αὐτόν. ⸀εἶπον αὐτῷ οἱ Ἰουδαῖοι· Ἡμῖν οὐκ ἔξεστιν ἀποκτεῖναι οὐδένα·

Phonetic (Greek): hina ho logos toy Ἰesoy plerothῇ hon eipen semainon poiῳ thanatῳ emellen apothnῄskein.
Edified Edition (EDE)that the saying of Jesus might be fulfilled which He spoke, signifying by what death He would die.

ἵνα ὁ λόγος τοῦ Ἰησοῦ πληρωθῇ ὃν εἶπεν σημαίνων ποίῳ θανάτῳ ἤμελλεν ἀποθνῄσκειν.

Phonetic (Greek): Eiselthen oyn ⸂palin eis to praitorion⸃ ho Pilatos kai ephonesen ton Ἰesoyn kai eipen aytῷ· Sy ei ho basileys ton Ἰoudaion;
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Pilate entered the Praetorium again, called Jesus, and said to Him, "Are You the King of the Jews?"

Εἰσῆλθεν οὖν ⸂πάλιν εἰς τὸ πραιτώριον⸃ ὁ Πιλᾶτος καὶ ἐφώνησεν τὸν Ἰησοῦν καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Σὺ εἶ ὁ βασιλεὺς τῶν Ἰουδαίων;

Phonetic (Greek): ⸀apekrithe Ἰesoys· ⸂Ἀpo seautoy⸃ sy toyto legeis e alloi ⸂eipon soi⸃ peri emoy;
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus answered him, [JESUS]"Are you speaking for yourself about this, or did others tell you this concerning Me?"[/JESUS]

⸀ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς· ⸂Ἀπὸ σεαυτοῦ⸃ σὺ τοῦτο λέγεις ἢ ἄλλοι ⸂εἶπόν σοι⸃ περὶ ἐμοῦ;

Phonetic (Greek): apekrithe ho Pilatos· Meti ego Ἰoudaios eimi; to ethnos to son kai ohi archiereis paredokan se emoi· ti epoiesas;
Edified Edition (EDE)Pilate answered, "Am I a Jew? Your own nation and the chief priests have delivered You to me. What have You done?"

ἀπεκρίθη ὁ Πιλᾶτος· Μήτι ἐγὼ Ἰουδαῖός εἰμι; τὸ ἔθνος τὸ σὸν καὶ οἱ ἀρχιερεῖς παρέδωκάν σε ἐμοί· τί ἐποίησας;

Phonetic (Greek): apekrithe Ἰesoys· Ἡ basileia he eme oyk estin ek toy kosmou toytou· ei ek toy kosmou toytou en he basileia he eme, ohi hyperetai ⸂ohi emoi egonizonto an⸃, hina me paradotho tois Ἰoudaiois· nyn de he basileia he eme oyk estin enteythen.
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus answered, [JESUS]"My kingdom is not of this world. If My kingdom were of this world, My servants would fight, so that I should not be delivered to the Jews; but now My kingdom is not from here."[/JESUS]

ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς· Ἡ βασιλεία ἡ ἐμὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου· εἰ ἐκ τοῦ κόσμου τούτου ἦν ἡ βασιλεία ἡ ἐμή, οἱ ὑπηρέται ⸂οἱ ἐμοὶ ἠγωνίζοντο ἄν⸃, ἵνα μὴ παραδοθῶ τοῖς Ἰουδαίοις· νῦν δὲ ἡ βασιλεία ἡ ἐμὴ οὐκ ἔστιν ἐντεῦθεν.

Phonetic (Greek): eipen oyn aytῷ ho Pilatos· Oykoyn basileys ei sy; apekrithe ⸀ho Ἰesoys· Sy legeis hoti basileys ⸀eimi. ego eis toyto gegennemai kai eis toyto elelytha eis ton kosmon hina martyreso tῇ aletheiᾳ· pas ho on ek tes aletheias akoyei mou tes phones.
Edified Edition (EDE)Pilate therefore said to Him, "Are You a king then?" Jesus answered, [JESUS]"You say rightly that I am a king. For this cause I was born, and for this cause I have come into the world, that I should bear witness to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth hears My voice."[/JESUS]

εἶπεν οὖν αὐτῷ ὁ Πιλᾶτος· Οὐκοῦν βασιλεὺς εἶ σύ; ἀπεκρίθη ⸀ὁ Ἰησοῦς· Σὺ λέγεις ὅτι βασιλεύς ⸀εἰμι. ἐγὼ εἰς τοῦτο γεγέννημαι καὶ εἰς τοῦτο ἐλήλυθα εἰς τὸν κόσμον ἵνα μαρτυρήσω τῇ ἀληθείᾳ· πᾶς ὁ ὢν ἐκ τῆς ἀληθείας ἀκούει μου τῆς φωνῆς.

Edified Edition (EDE)Pilate said to Him, "What is truth?" And when he had said this, he went out again to the Jews, and said to them, "I find no fault in Him at all."

λέγει αὐτῷ ὁ Πιλᾶτος· Τί ἐστιν ἀλήθεια; Καὶ τοῦτο εἰπὼν πάλιν ἐξῆλθεν πρὸς τοὺς Ἰουδαίους, καὶ λέγει αὐτοῖς· Ἐγὼ οὐδεμίαν ⸂εὑρίσκω ἐν αὐτῷ αἰτίαν⸃·
