Chapter 19
1
Phonetic (Greek): Tote oyn elaben ho Pilatos ton Ἰesoyn kai emastigosen.
Edified Edition (EDE)So then Pilate took Jesus and scourged Him.

2
Phonetic (Greek): kai ohi stratiotai plexantes stephanon ex akanthon epethekan aytoy tῇ kephalῇ, kai himation porphyroyn periebalon ayton,
Edified Edition (EDE)And the soldiers twisted a crown of thorns and put it on His head, and they put on Him a purple robe.

3
Phonetic (Greek): kai ⸂erchonto pros ayton kai⸃ elegon· Chaire, ho basileys ton Ἰoudaion· kai edidosan aytῷ ῥapismata.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then they said, "Hail, King of the Jews!" And they struck Him with their hands.

4
Phonetic (Greek): ⸂kai exelthen⸃ palin exo ho Pilatos kai legei aytois· Ἴde ago hymin ayton exo, hina gnote hoti ⸂oydemian aitian ehyrisko en aytῷ⸃.
Edified Edition (EDE)Pilate then went out again, and said to them, "Behold, I am bringing Him out to you, that you may know that I find no fault in Him."

5
Phonetic (Greek): exelthen oyn ho Ἰesoys exo, phoron ton akanthinon stephanon kai to porphyroyn himation. kai legei aytois· ⸀Ἰdoy ho anthropos.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Jesus came out, wearing the crown of thorns and the purple robe. And Pilate said to them, "Behold the Man!"

6
Phonetic (Greek): hote oyn eidon ayton ohi archiereis kai ohi hyperetai ekraygasan legontes· Stayroson ⸀stayroson. legei aytois ho Pilatos· Labete ayton hymeis kai staurosate, ego gar oych ehyrisko en aytῷ aitian.
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore, when the chief priests and officers saw Him, they cried out, saying, "Crucify Him, crucify Him!" Pilate said to them, "You take Him and crucify Him, for I find no fault in Him."

7
Phonetic (Greek): apekrithesan aytῷ ohi Ἰoudaioi· Ἡmeis nomon echomen, kai kata ton ⸀nomon opheilei apothanein, hoti ⸂yhion theoy heauton⸃ epoiesen.
Edified Edition (EDE)The Jews answered him, "We have a law, and according to our law He ought to die, because He made Himself the Son of God."

8
Phonetic (Greek): Ὅte oyn ekousen ho Pilatos toyton ton logon, mallon ephobethe,
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore, when Pilate heard that saying, he was the more afraid,

9
Phonetic (Greek): kai eiselthen eis to praitorion palin kai legei tῷ Ἰesoy· Pothen ei sy; ho de Ἰesoys apokrisin oyk edoken aytῷ.
Edified Edition (EDE)and went again into the Praetorium, and said to Jesus, "Where are You from?" But Jesus gave him no answer.

10
Phonetic (Greek): legei oyn aytῷ ho Pilatos· Ἐmoi oy laleis; oyk oidas hoti exousian echo ⸂apolysai se kai exousian echo staurosai⸃ se;
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Pilate said to Him, "Are You not speaking to me? Do You not know that I have power to crucify You, and power to release You?"

λέγει οὖν αὐτῷ ὁ Πιλᾶτος· Ἐμοὶ οὐ λαλεῖς; οὐκ οἶδας ὅτι ἐξουσίαν ἔχω ⸂ἀπολῦσαί σε καὶ ἐξουσίαν ἔχω σταυρῶσαί⸃ σε;

11
Phonetic (Greek): apekrithe ⸀aytῷ Ἰesoys· Oyk eiches exousian ⸂katʼ emoy oydemian⸃ ei me en ⸂dedomenon soi⸃ anothen· dia toyto ho ⸀paradoys me soi meizona hamartian echei.
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus answered, [JESUS]"You could have no power at all against Me unless it had been given you from above. Therefore the one who delivered Me to you has the greater sin."[/JESUS]

12
Phonetic (Greek): ek toytou ⸂ho Pilatos ezetei⸃ apolysai ayton· ohi de Ἰoudaioi ⸀ekraygasan legontes· Ἐan toyton apolysῃs, oyk ei philos toy Kaisaros· pas ho basilea heauton poion antilegei tῷ Kaisari.
Edified Edition (EDE)From then on Pilate sought to release Him, but the Jews cried out, saying, "If you let this Man go, you are not Caesar’s friend. Whoever makes himself a king speaks against Caesar."

13
Phonetic (Greek): Ὁ oyn Pilatos akoysas ⸂ton logon toyton⸃ egagen exo ton Ἰesoyn, kai ekathisen ⸀epi bematos eis topon legomenon Lithostroton, Ἑbraisti de Gabbatha.
Edified Edition (EDE)When Pilate therefore heard that saying, he brought Jesus out and sat down in the judgement seat in a place that is called The Pavement, but in Hebrew, Gabbatha.

Edified Edition (EDE)Now it was the Preparation Day of the Passover, and about the sixth hour. And he said to the Jews, "Behold your King!"

15
Phonetic (Greek): ⸂ekraygasan oyn ekeinoi⸃· Ἆron aron, stayroson ayton. legei aytois ho Pilatos· Ton basilea hymon stauroso; apekrithesan ohi archiereis· Oyk echomen basilea ei me Kaisara.
Edified Edition (EDE)But they cried out, "Away with Him, away with Him! Crucify Him!" Pilate said to them, "Shall I crucify your King?" The chief priests answered, "We have no king but Caesar!"

16
Phonetic (Greek): tote oyn paredoken ayton aytois hina staurothῇ. Parelabon ⸀oyn ton ⸀Ἰesoyn·
Edified Edition (EDE)Then he delivered Him to them to be crucified. Then they took Jesus and led Him away.

17
Phonetic (Greek): kai bastazon ⸂ahytῷ ton stauron⸃ exelthen eis ⸀ton legomenon Kraniou Topon, ⸀ho legetai Ἑbraisti Golgotha,
Edified Edition (EDE)And He, bearing His cross, went out to a place called the Place of a Skull, which is called in Hebrew, Golgotha,

18
Phonetic (Greek): hopou ayton estayrosan, kai metʼ aytoy allous dyo enteythen kai enteythen, meson de ton Ἰesoyn.
Edified Edition (EDE)where they crucified Him, and two others with Him, one on either side, and Jesus in the centre.

19
Phonetic (Greek): egrapsen de kai titlon ho Pilatos kai etheken epi toy stauroy· en de gegrammenon· Ἰesoys ho Nazoraios ho basileys ton Ἰoudaion.
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Pilate wrote a title and put it on the cross. And the writing was: JESUS OF NAZARETH, THE KING OF THE JEWS.

20
Phonetic (Greek): toyton oyn ton titlon polloi anegnosan ton Ἰoudaion, hoti engys en ho topos tes poleos hopou estaurothe ho Ἰesoys· kai en gegrammenon Ἑbraisti, ⸂Ῥomaisti, Ἑllenisti⸃.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then many of the Jews read this title, for the place where Jesus was crucified was near the city; and it was written in Hebrew, Greek, and Latin.

21
Phonetic (Greek): elegon oyn tῷ Pilatῳ ohi archiereis ton Ἰoudaion· Me graphe· Ὁ basileys ton Ἰoudaion, allʼ hoti ekeinos eipen Basileys ⸂ton Ἰoudaion eimi⸃.
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore the chief priests of the Jews said to Pilate, "Do not write, 'The King of the Jews,' but, 'He said, "I am the King of the Jews."’"

22
Phonetic (Greek): apekrithe ho Pilatos· Ὃ gegrapha gegrapha.
Edified Edition (EDE)Pilate answered, "What I have written, I have written."

23
Phonetic (Greek): ohi oyn stratiotai hote estayrosan ton Ἰesoyn elabon ta himatia aytoy kai epoiesan tessara mere, hekastῳ stratiotῃ meros, kai ton chitona. en de ho chiton araphos, ek ton anothen hyphantos diʼ holou·
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the soldiers, when they had crucified Jesus, took His garments and made four parts, to each soldier a part, and also the tunic. Now the tunic was without seam, woven from the top in one piece.

24
Phonetic (Greek): eipan oyn pros allelous· Me schisomen ayton, alla lachomen peri aytoy tinos estai· hina he graphe plerothῇ ⸂he legousa⸃· Diemerisanto ta himatia mou heautois kai epi ton himatismon mou ebalon kleron. Ohi men oyn stratiotai tayta epoiesan.
Edified Edition (EDE)They said therefore among themselves, "Let us not tear it, but cast lots for it, whose it shall be," that the Scripture might be fulfilled which says: "They divided My garments among them, and for My clothing they cast lots." Therefore the soldiers did these things.

25
Phonetic (Greek): Ehistekeisan de para tῷ staurῷ toy Ἰesoy he meter aytoy kai he adelphe tes metros aytoy, Maria he toy Klopa kai Maria he Magdalene.
Edified Edition (EDE)Now there stood by the cross of Jesus His mother, and His mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Clopas, and Mary Magdalene.

26
Phonetic (Greek): Ἰesoys oyn idon ten metera kai ton matheten parestota hon egapa legei tῇ ⸀metri· Gynai, ⸀ide ho yhios sou·
Edified Edition (EDE)When Jesus therefore saw His mother, and the disciple whom He loved standing by, He said to His mother, [JESUS]"Woman, behold your son!"[/JESUS]

27
Phonetic (Greek): eita legei tῷ mathetῇ· ⸀Ἴde he meter sou. kai apʼ ekeines tes horas elaben ho mathetes ayten eis ta idia.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then He said to the disciple, [JESUS]"Behold your mother!"[/JESUS] And from that hour that disciple took her to his own home.

28
Phonetic (Greek): Meta toyto ⸀eidos ho Ἰesoys hoti ⸂ede panta⸃ tetelestai hina teleiothῇ he graphe legei· Dipso.
Edified Edition (EDE)After this, Jesus, knowing that all things were now accomplished, that the Scripture might be fulfilled, said, [JESUS]"I thirst!"[/JESUS]

29
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀skeyos ekeito oxous meston· ⸂spongon oyn meston toy⸃ oxous ⸀hyssopῳ perithentes prosenenkan aytoy tῷ stomati.
Edified Edition (EDE)Now a vessel full of sour wine was sitting there; and they filled a sponge with sour wine, put it on hyssop, and put it to His mouth.

30
Phonetic (Greek): hote oyn elaben to oxos ho Ἰesoys eipen· Tetelestai, kai klinas ten kephalen paredoken to pneyma.
Edified Edition (EDE)So when Jesus had received the sour wine, He said, [JESUS]"It is finished!"[/JESUS] And bowing His head, He gave up His spirit.

31
Phonetic (Greek): Ohi oyn Ἰoudaioi, ⸂epei paraskeue en, hina me meinῃ epi toy stauroy ta somata en tῷ sabbatῳ⸃, en gar megale he hemera ekeinou toy sabbatou, erotesan ton Pilaton hina kateagosin ayton ta skele kai arthosin.
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore, because it was the Preparation Day, that the bodies should not remain on the cross on the Sabbath (for that Sabbath was a high day), the Jews asked Pilate that their legs might be broken, and that they might be taken away.

32
Phonetic (Greek): elthon oyn ohi stratiotai, kai toy men protou kateaxan ta skele kai toy allou toy systaurothentos aytῷ·
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first and of the other who was crucified with Him.

33
Phonetic (Greek): epi de ton Ἰesoyn elthontes, hos eidon ⸂ede ayton⸃ tethnekota, oy kateaxan aytoy ta skele,
Edified Edition (EDE)But when they came to Jesus and saw that He was already dead, they did not break His legs.

34
Phonetic (Greek): allʼ ehis ton stratioton lonchῃ aytoy ten pleuran enyxen, kai ⸂exelthen eythys⸃ ahima kai hydor.
Edified Edition (EDE)But one of the soldiers pierced His side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came out.

35
Phonetic (Greek): kai ho heorakos memartyreken, kai alethine ⸂aytoy estin⸃ he martyria, kai ekeinos oiden hoti alethe legei, hina ⸀kai hymeis ⸀pisteyete.
Edified Edition (EDE)And he who has seen has testified, and his testimony is true; and he knows that he is telling the truth, so that you may believe.

36
Phonetic (Greek): egeneto gar tayta hina he graphe plerothῇ· Ὀstoyn oy syntribesetai ⸀aytoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)For these things were done that the Scripture should be fulfilled, "Not one of His bones shall be broken."

37
Phonetic (Greek): kai palin hetera graphe legei· Ὄpsontai eis hon exekentesan.
Edified Edition (EDE)And again another Scripture says, "They shall look on Him whom they pierced."

38
Phonetic (Greek): Meta ⸀de tayta erotesen ton Pilaton Ἰoseph ⸀apo Ἁrimathaias, on mathetes toy Ἰesoy kekrymmenos de dia ton phobon ton Ἰoudaion, hina arῃ to soma toy Ἰesoy· kai epetrepsen ho Pilatos. elthen oyn kai eren to soma ⸀aytoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)After this, Joseph of Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but secretly, for fear of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of Jesus; and Pilate gave him permission. So he came and took the body of Jesus.

39
Phonetic (Greek): elthen de kai Nikodemos, ho elthon pros ⸀ayton nyktos to proton, pheron ⸀migma smyrnes kai aloes hos litras hekaton.
Edified Edition (EDE)And Nicodemus, who at first came to Jesus by night, also came, bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about a hundred pounds weight.

40
Phonetic (Greek): elabon oyn to soma toy Ἰesoy kai edesan ⸀ayto othoniois meta ton aromaton, kathos ethos estin tois Ἰoudaiois entaphiazein.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then they took the body of Jesus, and bound it in strips of linen with the spices, as the custom of the Jews is to bury.

Edified Edition (EDE)Now in the place where He was crucified there was a garden, and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.

42
Phonetic (Greek): ekei oyn dia ten paraskeuen ton Ἰoudaion, hoti engys en to mnemeion, ethekan ton Ἰesoyn.
Edified Edition (EDE)So there they laid Jesus, because of the Jews’ Preparation Day, for the tomb was nearby.
