Chapter 3

Phonetic (Greek): Ἦn de anthropos ek ton Pharisaion, Nikodemos onoma aytῷ, archon ton Ἰoudaion·
Edified Edition (EDE)Now there was a man of the Pharisees named Nicodemus, a ruler of the Jews.

Ἦν δὲ ἄνθρωπος ἐκ τῶν Φαρισαίων, Νικόδημος ὄνομα αὐτῷ, ἄρχων τῶν Ἰουδαίων·

Phonetic (Greek): ohytos elthen pros ayton nyktos kai eipen aytῷ· Ῥabbi, oidamen hoti apo theoy elelythas didaskalos· oydeis gar ⸂dynatai tayta ta semeia⸃ poiein ha sy poieis, ean me e ho theos metʼ aytoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)He came to Him by night and said to Him, "Rabbi, we know that You have come from God as a teacher; for no one can do these signs that You do unless God is with him."

οὗτος ἦλθεν πρὸς αὐτὸν νυκτὸς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ῥαββί, οἴδαμεν ὅτι ἀπὸ θεοῦ ἐλήλυθας διδάσκαλος· οὐδεὶς γὰρ ⸂δύναται ταῦτα τὰ σημεῖα⸃ ποιεῖν ἃ σὺ ποιεῖς, ἐὰν μὴ ᾖ ὁ θεὸς μετʼ αὐτοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): ⸀apekrithe Ἰesoys kai eipen aytῷ· Ἀmen amen lego soi, ean me tis gennethῇ anothen, oy dynatai idein ten basileian toy theoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus answered and said to him, [JESUS]"Most certainly, I tell you, unless one is born from above, he cannot see the Kingdom of God."[/JESUS]

⸀ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω σοι, ἐὰν μή τις γεννηθῇ ἄνωθεν, οὐ δύναται ἰδεῖν τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): legei pros ayton ⸀ho Nikodemos· Pos dynatai anthropos gennethenai geron on; me dynatai eis ten koilian tes metros aytoy deyteron eiselthein kai gennethenai;
Edified Edition (EDE)Nicodemus said to Him, "How can a man be born when he is old? Can he enter a second time into his mother’s womb and be born?"

λέγει πρὸς αὐτὸν ⸀ὁ Νικόδημος· Πῶς δύναται ἄνθρωπος γεννηθῆναι γέρων ὤν; μὴ δύναται εἰς τὴν κοιλίαν τῆς μητρὸς αὐτοῦ δεύτερον εἰσελθεῖν καὶ γεννηθῆναι;

Phonetic (Greek): ⸀apekrithe Ἰesoys· Ἀmen amen lego soi, ean me tis gennethῇ ex hydatos kai pneymatos, oy dynatai eiselthein eis ten basileian toy theoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus answered, [JESUS]"Most certainly, I tell you, unless one is born of water and Spirit, he cannot enter the Kingdom of God."[/JESUS]

⸀ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς· Ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω σοι, ἐὰν μή τις γεννηθῇ ἐξ ὕδατος καὶ πνεύματος, οὐ δύναται εἰσελθεῖν εἰς τὴν βασιλείαν τοῦ θεοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): to gegennemenon ek tes sarkos sarx estin, kai to gegennemenon ek toy pneymatos pneyma estin.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"That which is born of the flesh is flesh, and that which is born of the Spirit is spirit."[/JESUS]

τὸ γεγεννημένον ἐκ τῆς σαρκὸς σάρξ ἐστιν, καὶ τὸ γεγεννημένον ἐκ τοῦ πνεύματος πνεῦμά ἐστιν.

Phonetic (Greek): me thaumasῃs hoti eipon soi Dei hymas gennethenai anothen.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"Do not marvel that I said to you, 'You must be born from above.'"[/JESUS]

μὴ θαυμάσῃς ὅτι εἶπόν σοι Δεῖ ὑμᾶς γεννηθῆναι ἄνωθεν.

Phonetic (Greek): to pneyma hopou thelei pnei, kai ten phonen aytoy akoyeis, allʼ oyk oidas pothen erchetai kai poy hypagei· ohytos estin pas ho gegennemenos ek toy pneymatos.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"The wind blows where it wills, and you hear the sound of it, but you do not know where it comes from or where it is going; so is everyone who is born of the Spirit."[/JESUS]

τὸ πνεῦμα ὅπου θέλει πνεῖ, καὶ τὴν φωνὴν αὐτοῦ ἀκούεις, ἀλλʼ οὐκ οἶδας πόθεν ἔρχεται καὶ ποῦ ὑπάγει· οὕτως ἐστὶν πᾶς ὁ γεγεννημένος ἐκ τοῦ πνεύματος.

Edified Edition (EDE)Nicodemus answered and said to Him, "How can these things be?"

ἀπεκρίθη Νικόδημος καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Πῶς δύναται ταῦτα γενέσθαι;

Phonetic (Greek): apekrithe Ἰesoys kai eipen aytῷ· Sy ei ho didaskalos toy Ἰsrael kai tayta oy ginoskeis;
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus answered and said to him, [JESUS]"Are you the teacher of Israel, and yet you do not understand these things?"[/JESUS]

ἀπεκρίθη Ἰησοῦς καὶ εἶπεν αὐτῷ· Σὺ εἶ ὁ διδάσκαλος τοῦ Ἰσραὴλ καὶ ταῦτα οὐ γινώσκεις;

Phonetic (Greek): amen amen lego soi hoti ho oidamen laloymen kai ho heorakamen martyroymen, kai ten martyrian hemon oy lambanete.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"Most certainly, I tell you, we speak what we know and testify to what we have seen, and you do not receive our testimony."[/JESUS]

ἀμὴν ἀμὴν λέγω σοι ὅτι ὃ οἴδαμεν λαλοῦμεν καὶ ὃ ἑωράκαμεν μαρτυροῦμεν, καὶ τὴν μαρτυρίαν ἡμῶν οὐ λαμβάνετε.

Phonetic (Greek): ei ta epigeia eipon hymin kai oy pisteyete, pos ean eipo hymin ta epourania pisteysete;
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"If I told you earthly things and you do not believe, how will you believe if I tell you heavenly things?"[/JESUS]

εἰ τὰ ἐπίγεια εἶπον ὑμῖν καὶ οὐ πιστεύετε, πῶς ἐὰν εἴπω ὑμῖν τὰ ἐπουράνια πιστεύσετε;

Phonetic (Greek): kai oydeis anabebeken eis ton oyranon ei me ho ek toy oyranoy katabas, ho yhios toy ⸀anthropou.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"No one has ascended into heaven except He who descended from heaven: the Son of Man."[/JESUS]

καὶ οὐδεὶς ἀναβέβηκεν εἰς τὸν οὐρανὸν εἰ μὴ ὁ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ καταβάς, ὁ υἱὸς τοῦ ⸀ἀνθρώπου.

Phonetic (Greek): kai kathos Moyses hypsosen ton ophin en tῇ eremῳ, ohytos hypsothenai dei ton yhion toy anthropou,
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of Man be lifted up,"[/JESUS]

καὶ καθὼς Μωϋσῆς ὕψωσεν τὸν ὄφιν ἐν τῇ ἐρήμῳ, οὕτως ὑψωθῆναι δεῖ τὸν υἱὸν τοῦ ἀνθρώπου,

Phonetic (Greek): hina pas ho pisteyon ⸂en aytῷ⸃ echῃ zoen aionion.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life."[/JESUS]

ἵνα πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων ⸂ἐν αὐτῷ⸃ ἔχῃ ζωὴν αἰώνιον.

Phonetic (Greek): Ohytos gar egapesen ho theos ton kosmon hoste ton ⸀yhion ton monogene edoken, hina pas ho pisteyon eis ayton me apoletai alla echῃ zoen aionion.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"For God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life."[/JESUS]

Οὕτως γὰρ ἠγάπησεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν κόσμον ὥστε τὸν ⸀υἱὸν τὸν μονογενῆ ἔδωκεν, ἵνα πᾶς ὁ πιστεύων εἰς αὐτὸν μὴ ἀπόληται ἀλλὰ ἔχῃ ζωὴν αἰώνιον.

Phonetic (Greek): oy gar apesteilen ho theos ton ⸀yhion eis ton kosmon hina krinῃ ton kosmon, allʼ hina sothῇ ho kosmos diʼ aytoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"For God did not send His Son into the world to condemn the world, but that the world might be saved through Him."[/JESUS]

οὐ γὰρ ἀπέστειλεν ὁ θεὸς τὸν ⸀υἱὸν εἰς τὸν κόσμον ἵνα κρίνῃ τὸν κόσμον, ἀλλʼ ἵνα σωθῇ ὁ κόσμος διʼ αὐτοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): ho pisteyon eis ayton oy krinetai· ho ⸀de me pisteyon ede kekritai, hoti me pepisteuken eis to onoma toy monogenoys yhioy toy theoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"He who believes in Him is not condemned; but he who does not believe has been condemned already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God."[/JESUS]

ὁ πιστεύων εἰς αὐτὸν οὐ κρίνεται· ὁ ⸀δὲ μὴ πιστεύων ἤδη κέκριται, ὅτι μὴ πεπίστευκεν εἰς τὸ ὄνομα τοῦ μονογενοῦς υἱοῦ τοῦ θεοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): ahyte de estin he krisis hoti to phos elelythen eis ton kosmon kai egapesan ohi anthropoi mallon to skotos e to phos, en gar ⸂ayton ponera⸃ ta erga.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"And this is the judgement: that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil."[/JESUS]

αὕτη δέ ἐστιν ἡ κρίσις ὅτι τὸ φῶς ἐλήλυθεν εἰς τὸν κόσμον καὶ ἠγάπησαν οἱ ἄνθρωποι μᾶλλον τὸ σκότος ἢ τὸ φῶς, ἦν γὰρ ⸂αὐτῶν πονηρὰ⸃ τὰ ἔργα.

Phonetic (Greek): pas gar ho phayla prasson misei to phos kai oyk erchetai pros to phos, hina me elenchthῇ ta erga aytoy·
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"For everyone who does evil hates the Light and does not come to the Light, so that his deeds may not be exposed."[/JESUS]

πᾶς γὰρ ὁ φαῦλα πράσσων μισεῖ τὸ φῶς καὶ οὐκ ἔρχεται πρὸς τὸ φῶς, ἵνα μὴ ἐλεγχθῇ τὰ ἔργα αὐτοῦ·

Phonetic (Greek): ho de poion ten aletheian erchetai pros to phos, hina phanerothῇ aytoy ta erga hoti en theῷ estin eirgasmena.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"But he who does the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be clearly seen as having been done in God."[/JESUS]

ὁ δὲ ποιῶν τὴν ἀλήθειαν ἔρχεται πρὸς τὸ φῶς, ἵνα φανερωθῇ αὐτοῦ τὰ ἔργα ὅτι ἐν θεῷ ἐστιν εἰργασμένα.

Phonetic (Greek): Meta tayta elthen ho Ἰesoys kai ohi mathetai aytoy eis ten Ἰoudaian gen, kai ekei dietriben metʼ ayton kai ebaptizen.
Edified Edition (EDE)After these things, Jesus and His disciples came into the land of Judea, and there He stayed with them and baptised.

Μετὰ ταῦτα ἦλθεν ὁ Ἰησοῦς καὶ οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ εἰς τὴν Ἰουδαίαν γῆν, καὶ ἐκεῖ διέτριβεν μετʼ αὐτῶν καὶ ἐβάπτιζεν.

Phonetic (Greek): en de kai ⸀ho Ἰoannes baptizon en Ainon engys toy Saleim, hoti hydata polla en ekei, kai pareginonto kai ebaptizonto·
Edified Edition (EDE)John also was baptising in Aenon near Salim, because there was much water there; and people came and were baptised.

ἦν δὲ καὶ ⸀ὁ Ἰωάννης βαπτίζων ἐν Αἰνὼν ἐγγὺς τοῦ Σαλείμ, ὅτι ὕδατα πολλὰ ἦν ἐκεῖ, καὶ παρεγίνοντο καὶ ἐβαπτίζοντο·

Phonetic (Greek): oypo gar en beblemenos eis ten phylaken ⸀ho Ἰoannes.
Edified Edition (EDE)For John had not yet been thrown into prison.

οὔπω γὰρ ἦν βεβλημένος εἰς τὴν φυλακὴν ⸀ὁ Ἰωάννης.

Phonetic (Greek): Ἐgeneto oyn zetesis ek ton matheton Ἰoannou meta Ἰoudaiou peri katharismoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore a debate arose between some of John’s disciples and a Jew about purification.

Ἐγένετο οὖν ζήτησις ἐκ τῶν μαθητῶν Ἰωάννου μετὰ Ἰουδαίου περὶ καθαρισμοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): kai elthon pros ton Ἰoannen kai eipan aytῷ· Ῥabbi, hos en meta soy peran toy Ἰordanou, ho sy memartyrekas, ide ohytos baptizei kai pantes erchontai pros ayton.
Edified Edition (EDE)And they came to John and said to him, "Rabbi, He who was with you beyond the Jordan, to whom you have testified , behold, He is baptising, and all are coming to Him!"

καὶ ἦλθον πρὸς τὸν Ἰωάννην καὶ εἶπαν αὐτῷ· Ῥαββί, ὃς ἦν μετὰ σοῦ πέραν τοῦ Ἰορδάνου, ᾧ σὺ μεμαρτύρηκας, ἴδε οὗτος βαπτίζει καὶ πάντες ἔρχονται πρὸς αὐτόν.

Phonetic (Greek): apekrithe Ἰoannes kai eipen· Oy dynatai anthropos lambanein ⸂oyde hen⸃ ean me e dedomenon aytῷ ek toy oyranoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)John answered and said, "A man can receive nothing unless it has been given to him from heaven."

ἀπεκρίθη Ἰωάννης καὶ εἶπεν· Οὐ δύναται ἄνθρωπος λαμβάνειν ⸂οὐδὲ ἓν⸃ ἐὰν μὴ ᾖ δεδομένον αὐτῷ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): aytoi hymeis ⸀moi martyreite hoti ⸀eipon· Oyk eimi ego ho christos, allʼ hoti Ἀpestalmenos eimi emprosthen ekeinou.
Edified Edition (EDE)"You yourselves bear me witness that I said, 'I am not the Christ,' but 'I have been sent before Him.'"

αὐτοὶ ὑμεῖς ⸀μοι μαρτυρεῖτε ὅτι ⸀εἶπον· Οὐκ εἰμὶ ἐγὼ ὁ χριστός, ἀλλʼ ὅτι Ἀπεσταλμένος εἰμὶ ἔμπροσθεν ἐκείνου.

Phonetic (Greek): ho echon ten nymphen nymphios estin· ho de philos toy nymphiou ho hestekos kai akoyon aytoy, charᾷ chairei dia ten phonen toy nymphiou. ahyte oyn he chara he eme peplerotai.
Edified Edition (EDE)"He who has the bride is the bridegroom; but the friend of the bridegroom, who stands and hears him, rejoices greatly because of the bridegroom’s voice. This joy of mine, therefore, is fulfilled."

ὁ ἔχων τὴν νύμφην νυμφίος ἐστίν· ὁ δὲ φίλος τοῦ νυμφίου ὁ ἑστηκὼς καὶ ἀκούων αὐτοῦ, χαρᾷ χαίρει διὰ τὴν φωνὴν τοῦ νυμφίου. αὕτη οὖν ἡ χαρὰ ἡ ἐμὴ πεπλήρωται.

Phonetic (Greek): ekeinon dei ayxanein, eme de elattoysthai.
Edified Edition (EDE)"He must increase, but I must decrease."

ἐκεῖνον δεῖ αὐξάνειν, ἐμὲ δὲ ἐλαττοῦσθαι.

Phonetic (Greek): Ὁ anothen erchomenos epano panton estin. ho on ek tes ges ek tes ges estin kai ek tes ges lalei· ho ek toy oyranoy erchomenos epano panton estin·
Edified Edition (EDE)He who comes from above is above all; he who is of the earth belongs to the earth and speaks of the earth. He who comes from heaven is above all.

Ὁ ἄνωθεν ἐρχόμενος ἐπάνω πάντων ἐστίν. ὁ ὢν ἐκ τῆς γῆς ἐκ τῆς γῆς ἐστιν καὶ ἐκ τῆς γῆς λαλεῖ· ὁ ἐκ τοῦ οὐρανοῦ ἐρχόμενος ἐπάνω πάντων ἐστίν·

Phonetic (Greek): ⸀ho heoraken kai ekousen toyto martyrei, kai ten martyrian aytoy oydeis lambanei.
Edified Edition (EDE)What He has seen and heard, to this He testifies; and no one receives His testimony.

⸀ὃ ἑώρακεν καὶ ἤκουσεν τοῦτο μαρτυρεῖ, καὶ τὴν μαρτυρίαν αὐτοῦ οὐδεὶς λαμβάνει.

Phonetic (Greek): ho labon aytoy ten martyrian esphragisen hoti ho theos alethes estin.
Edified Edition (EDE)He who has received His testimony has set his seal to this: that God is true.

ὁ λαβὼν αὐτοῦ τὴν μαρτυρίαν ἐσφράγισεν ὅτι ὁ θεὸς ἀληθής ἐστιν.

Phonetic (Greek): hon gar apesteilen ho theos ta ῥemata toy theoy lalei, oy gar ek metrou ⸀didosin to pneyma.
Edified Edition (EDE)For He whom God has sent speaks the words of God, for He does not give the Spirit by measure.

ὃν γὰρ ἀπέστειλεν ὁ θεὸς τὰ ῥήματα τοῦ θεοῦ λαλεῖ, οὐ γὰρ ἐκ μέτρου ⸀δίδωσιν τὸ πνεῦμα.

Phonetic (Greek): ho pater agapᾷ ton yhion, kai panta dedoken en tῇ cheiri aytoy.
Edified Edition (EDE)The Father loves the Son and has given all things into His hand.

ὁ πατὴρ ἀγαπᾷ τὸν υἱόν, καὶ πάντα δέδωκεν ἐν τῇ χειρὶ αὐτοῦ.

Phonetic (Greek): ho pisteyon eis ton yhion echei zoen aionion· ho de apeithon tῷ yhiῷ oyk opsetai zoen, allʼ he orge toy theoy menei epʼ ayton.
Edified Edition (EDE)He who believes in the Son has eternal life; but he who rejects the Son shall not see life, but the wrath of God remains upon him.

ὁ πιστεύων εἰς τὸν υἱὸν ἔχει ζωὴν αἰώνιον· ὁ δὲ ἀπειθῶν τῷ υἱῷ οὐκ ὄψεται ζωήν, ἀλλʼ ἡ ὀργὴ τοῦ θεοῦ μένει ἐπʼ αὐτόν.
