Chapter 4
1
Phonetic (Greek): Ὡs oyn egno ho ⸀Ἰesoys hoti ekousan ohi Pharisaioi hoti Ἰesoys pleionas mathetas poiei kai baptizei e Ἰoannes—
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore, when the Lord knew that the Pharisees had heard that Jesus was making and baptizing more disciples than John

2
Phonetic (Greek): kaitoige Ἰesoys aytos oyk ebaptizen allʼ ohi mathetai aytoy—
Edified Edition (EDE)(though Jesus Himself did not baptize, but His disciples),

3
Phonetic (Greek): apheken ten Ἰoudaian kai apelthen ⸀palin eis ten Galilaian.
Edified Edition (EDE)He left Judea and departed again into Galilee.

4
Phonetic (Greek): edei de ayton dierchesthai dia tes Samareias.
Edified Edition (EDE)But He had to pass through Samaria.

5
Phonetic (Greek): erchetai oyn eis polin tes Samareias legomenen Sychar plesion toy choriou ho edoken Ἰakob ⸀tῷ Ἰoseph tῷ yhiῷ aytoy·
Edified Edition (EDE)So He came to a city of Samaria called Sychar, near the plot of ground that Jacob gave to his son Joseph.

6
Phonetic (Greek): en de ekei pege toy Ἰakob. ho oyn Ἰesoys kekopiakos ek tes hodoiporias ekathezeto ohytos epi tῇ pegῇ· hora en ⸀hos hekte.
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Jacob’s well was there. Jesus therefore, being wearied from His journey, sat thus by the well. It was about the sixth hour.

7
Phonetic (Greek): Ἔrchetai gyne ek tes Samareias antlesai hydor. legei aytῇ ho Ἰesoys· Dos moi pein·
Edified Edition (EDE)A woman of Samaria came to draw water. Jesus said to her, [JESUS]"Give Me a drink."[/JESUS]

8
Phonetic (Greek): ohi gar mathetai aytoy apelelytheisan eis ten polin, hina trophas agorasosin.
Edified Edition (EDE)For His disciples had gone away into the city to buy food.

9
Phonetic (Greek): legei oyn aytῷ he gyne he Samaritis· Pos sy Ἰoudaios on parʼ emoy pein aiteis ⸂gynaikos Samaritidos oyses⸃; oy gar synchrontai Ἰoudaioi Samaritais.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the woman of Samaria said to Him, "How is it that You, being a Jew, ask a drink from me, a Samaritan woman?" For Jews have no dealings with Samaritans.

10
Phonetic (Greek): apekrithe Ἰesoys kai eipen aytῇ· Ei edeis ten dorean toy theoy kai tis estin ho legon soi· Dos moi pein, sy an etesas ayton kai edoken an soi hydor zon.
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus answered and said to her, [JESUS]"If you knew the gift of God, and who it is who says to you, ‘Give Me a drink,’ you would have asked Him, and He would have given you living water."[/JESUS]

11
Phonetic (Greek): legei aytῷ ⸂he gyne⸃· Kyrie, oyte antlema echeis kai to phrear estin bathy· pothen oyn echeis to hydor to zon;
Edified Edition (EDE)The woman said to Him, "Sir, You have nothing to draw with, and the well is deep. Where then do You get that living water?"

λέγει αὐτῷ ⸂ἡ γυνή⸃· Κύριε, οὔτε ἄντλημα ἔχεις καὶ τὸ φρέαρ ἐστὶν βαθύ· πόθεν οὖν ἔχεις τὸ ὕδωρ τὸ ζῶν;

12
Phonetic (Greek): me sy meizon ei toy patros hemon Ἰakob, hos edoken hemin to phrear kai aytos ex aytoy epien kai ohi yhioi aytoy kai ta thremmata aytoy;
Edified Edition (EDE)"Are You greater than our father Jacob, who gave us the well, and drank from it himself, as well as his sons and his livestock?"

μὴ σὺ μείζων εἶ τοῦ πατρὸς ἡμῶν Ἰακώβ, ὃς ἔδωκεν ἡμῖν τὸ φρέαρ καὶ αὐτὸς ἐξ αὐτοῦ ἔπιεν καὶ οἱ υἱοὶ αὐτοῦ καὶ τὰ θρέμματα αὐτοῦ;

13
Phonetic (Greek): apekrithe Ἰesoys kai eipen aytῇ· Pas ho pinon ek toy hydatos toytou dipsesei palin·
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus answered and said to her, [JESUS]"Whoever drinks of this water will thirst again,"[/JESUS]

14
Phonetic (Greek): hos dʼ an piῃ ek toy hydatos ohy ego doso aytῷ, oy me ⸀dipsesei eis ton aiona, alla to hydor ho doso aytῷ genesetai en aytῷ pege hydatos hallomenou eis zoen aionion.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"but whoever drinks of the water that I shall give him will never thirst. But the water that I shall give him will become in him a fountain of water springing up into eternal life."[/JESUS]

15
Phonetic (Greek): legei pros ayton he gyne· Kyrie, dos moi toyto to hydor, hina me dipso mede ⸀dierchomai enthade antlein.
Edified Edition (EDE)The woman said to Him, "Sir, give me this water, that I may not thirst, nor come here to draw."

16
Phonetic (Greek): Legei ⸀aytῇ· Ὕpage phoneson ⸂ton andra sou⸃ kai elthe enthade.
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus said to her, [JESUS]"Go, call your husband, and come here."[/JESUS]

17
Phonetic (Greek): apekrithe he gyne kai eipen ⸀aytῷ· Oyk echo andra. legei aytῇ ho Ἰesoys· Kalos eipas hoti Ἄndra oyk echo·
Edified Edition (EDE)The woman answered and said, "I have no husband." Jesus said to her, [JESUS]"You have well said, ‘I have no husband,’"[/JESUS]

18
Phonetic (Greek): pente gar andras esches, kai nyn hon echeis oyk estin sou aner· toyto alethes eirekas.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"for you have had five husbands, and the one whom you now have is not your husband; in that you spoke truly."[/JESUS]

19
Phonetic (Greek): legei aytῷ he gyne· Kyrie, theoro hoti prophetes ei sy.
Edified Edition (EDE)The woman said to Him, "Sir, I perceive that You are a prophet."

20
Phonetic (Greek): ohi pateres hemon en tῷ orei toytῳ prosekynesan· kai hymeis legete hoti en Ἱerosolymois estin ho topos hopou ⸂proskynein dei⸃.
Edified Edition (EDE)"Our fathers worshiped on this mountain, and you Jews say that in Jerusalem is the place where one ought to worship."

21
Phonetic (Greek): legei aytῇ ho Ἰesoys· ⸂Pisteue moi, gynai⸃, hoti erchetai hora hote oyte en tῷ orei toytῳ oyte en Ἱerosolymois proskynesete tῷ patri.
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus said to her, [JESUS]"Woman, believe Me, the hour is coming when you will neither on this mountain, nor in Jerusalem, worship the Father."[/JESUS]

22
Phonetic (Greek): hymeis proskyneite ho oyk oidate, hemeis proskynoymen ho oidamen, hoti he soteria ek ton Ἰoudaion estin·
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"You worship what you do not know; we know what we worship, for salvation is of the Jews."[/JESUS]

23
Phonetic (Greek): alla erchetai hora kai nyn estin, hote ohi alethinoi proskynetai proskynesousin tῷ patri en pneymati kai aletheiᾳ, kai gar ho pater toioytous zetei toys proskynoyntas ayton·

24
Phonetic (Greek): pneyma ho theos, kai toys proskynoyntas ayton en pneymati kai aletheiᾳ dei proskynein.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"God is Spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in spirit and truth."[/JESUS]

25
Phonetic (Greek): legei aytῷ he gyne· Oida hoti Messias erchetai, ho legomenos christos· hotan elthῃ ekeinos, anangelei hemin ⸀hapanta.
Edified Edition (EDE)The woman said to Him, "I know that Messiah is coming" (who is called Christ). "When He comes, He will tell us all things."

26
Phonetic (Greek): legei aytῇ ho Ἰesoys· Ἐgo eimi, ho lalon soi.
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus said to her, [JESUS]"I who speak to you am He."[/JESUS]

27
Phonetic (Greek): Kai epi toytῳ elthan ohi mathetai aytoy, kai ⸀ethaymazon hoti meta gynaikos elalei· oydeis mentoi eipen· Ti zeteis; e ti laleis metʼ aytes;
Edified Edition (EDE)And at this point His disciples came, and they marveled that He talked with a woman; yet no one said, "What do You seek?" or, "Why are You talking with her?"

Καὶ ἐπὶ τούτῳ ἦλθαν οἱ μαθηταὶ αὐτοῦ, καὶ ⸀ἐθαύμαζον ὅτι μετὰ γυναικὸς ἐλάλει· οὐδεὶς μέντοι εἶπεν· Τί ζητεῖς; ἢ τί λαλεῖς μετʼ αὐτῆς;

28
Phonetic (Greek): apheken oyn ten hydrian aytes he gyne kai apelthen eis ten polin kai legei tois anthropois·
Edified Edition (EDE)The woman then left her waterpot, went her way into the city, and said to the men,

29
Phonetic (Greek): Deyte idete anthropon hos eipe moi panta ⸀hosa epoiesa· meti ohytos estin ho christos;
Edified Edition (EDE)"Come, see a Man who told me all things that I ever did. Could this be the Christ?"

Δεῦτε ἴδετε ἄνθρωπον ὃς εἶπέ μοι πάντα ⸀ὅσα ἐποίησα· μήτι οὗτός ἐστιν ὁ χριστός;

30
Phonetic (Greek): exelthon ek tes poleos kai erchonto pros ayton.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then they went out of the city and came to Him.

31
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀Ἐn tῷ metaxy eroton ayton ohi mathetai legontes· Ῥabbi, phage.
Edified Edition (EDE)In the meantime His disciples urged Him, saying, "Rabbi, eat."

32
Phonetic (Greek): ho de eipen aytois· Ἐgo brosin echo phagein hen hymeis oyk oidate.
Edified Edition (EDE)But He said to them, [JESUS]"I have food to eat of which you do not know."[/JESUS]

33
Phonetic (Greek): elegon oyn ohi mathetai pros allelous· Me tis enenken aytῷ phagein;
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore the disciples said to one another, "Has anyone brought Him anything to eat?"

ἔλεγον οὖν οἱ μαθηταὶ πρὸς ἀλλήλους· Μή τις ἤνεγκεν αὐτῷ φαγεῖν;

34
Phonetic (Greek): legei aytois ho Ἰesoys· Ἐmon broma estin hina ⸀poieso to thelema toy pempsantos me kai teleioso aytoy to ergon.
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus said to them, [JESUS]"My food is to do the will of Him who sent Me, and to finish His work."[/JESUS]

35
Phonetic (Greek): oych hymeis legete hoti Ἔti tetramenos estin kai ho therismos erchetai; idoy lego hymin, eparate toys ophthalmoys hymon kai theasasthe tas choras hoti leukai eisin pros therismon· ede
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"Do you not say, ‘There are still four months and then comes the harvest’? Behold, I say to you, lift up your eyes and look at the fields, for they are already white for harvest!"[/JESUS]

36
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀ho therizon misthon lambanei kai synagei karpon eis zoen aionion, ⸀hina ho speiron homoy chairῃ kai ho therizon.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"And he who reaps receives wages, and gathers fruit for eternal life, that both he who sows and he who reaps may rejoice together."[/JESUS]

37
Phonetic (Greek): en gar toytῳ ho logos ⸀estin alethinos hoti Ἄllos estin ho speiron kai allos ho therizon·
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"For in this the saying is true: ‘One sows and another reaps.’"[/JESUS]

38
Phonetic (Greek): ego apesteila hymas therizein ho oych hymeis kekopiakate· alloi kekopiakasin, kai hymeis eis ton kopon ayton eiselelythate.
Edified Edition (EDE)[JESUS]"I sent you to reap that for which you have not laboured; others have laboured, and you have entered into their labours."[/JESUS]

39
Phonetic (Greek): Ἐk de tes poleos ekeines polloi episteusan eis ayton ton Samariton dia ton logon tes gynaikos martyroyses hoti Eipen moi panta ⸀ha epoiesa.
Edified Edition (EDE)And many of the Samaritans of that city believed in Him because of the word of the woman who testified, "He told me all that I ever did."

40
Phonetic (Greek): hos oyn elthon pros ayton ohi Samaritai, eroton ayton meinai parʼ aytois· kai emeinen ekei dyo hemeras.
Edified Edition (EDE)So when the Samaritans had come to Him, they urged Him to stay with them; and He stayed there two days.

41
Phonetic (Greek): kai pollῷ pleious episteusan dia ton logon aytoy,
Edified Edition (EDE)And many more believed because of His own word.

42
Phonetic (Greek): tῇ te gynaiki elegon hoti Oyketi dia ten sen lalian pisteyomen· aytoi gar akekoamen, kai oidamen hoti ohytos estin alethos ho soter toy ⸀kosmou.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then they said to the woman, "Now we believe, not because of what you said, for we ourselves have heard Him and we know that this is indeed the Christ, the Savior of the world."

43
Phonetic (Greek): Meta de tas dyo hemeras exelthen ⸀ekeithen eis ten Galilaian·
Edified Edition (EDE)Now after the two days He departed from there and went to Galilee.

44
Phonetic (Greek): aytos ⸀gar Ἰesoys emartyresen hoti prophetes en tῇ idiᾳ patridi timen oyk echei.
Edified Edition (EDE)For Jesus Himself testified that a prophet has no honour in his own country.

45
Phonetic (Greek): hote oyn elthen eis ten Galilaian, edexanto ayton ohi Galilaioi, panta heorakotes ⸀hosa epoiesen en Ἱerosolymois en tῇ heortῇ, kai aytoi gar elthon eis ten heorten.
Edified Edition (EDE)So when He came to Galilee, the Galileans received Him, having seen all the things He did in Jerusalem at the feast; for they also had gone to the feast.

46
Phonetic (Greek): Ἦlthen oyn ⸀palin eis ten Kana tes Galilaias, hopou epoiesen to hydor oinon. kai en tis basilikos ohy ho yhios esthenei en Kapharnaoym.
Edified Edition (EDE)So Jesus came again to Cana of Galilee where He had made the water wine. And there was a certain nobleman whose son was sick at Capernaum.

47
Phonetic (Greek): ohytos akoysas hoti Ἰesoys hekei ek tes Ἰoudaias eis ten Galilaian apelthen pros ayton kai ⸀erota hina katabῇ kai iasetai aytoy ton yhion, emellen gar apothnῄskein.
Edified Edition (EDE)When he heard that Jesus had come out of Judea into Galilee, he went to Him and implored Him to come down and heal his son, for he was at the point of death.

48
Phonetic (Greek): eipen oyn ho Ἰesoys pros ayton· Ἐan me semeia kai terata idete, oy me pisteysete.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Jesus said to him, [JESUS]"Unless you people see signs and wonders, you will by no means believe."[/JESUS]

49
Phonetic (Greek): legei pros ayton ho basilikos· Kyrie, katabethi prin apothanein to paidion mou.
Edified Edition (EDE)The nobleman said to Him, "Sir, come down before my child dies!"

50
Phonetic (Greek): legei aytῷ ho Ἰesoys· Poreyou· ho yhios sou zῇ. ⸀episteusen ho anthropos tῷ logῳ ⸀hon eipen aytῷ ho Ἰesoys kai eporeyeto.
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesus said to him, [JESUS]"Go your way; your son lives."[/JESUS] So the man believed the word that Jesus spoke to him, and he went his way.

51
Phonetic (Greek): ede de aytoy katabainontos ohi doyloi aytoy ⸀hypentesan ⸀aytῷ legontes hoti ho pais ⸀aytoy zῇ.
Edified Edition (EDE)And as he was now going down, his servants met him and told him, saying, "Your son lives!"

52
Phonetic (Greek): epytheto oyn ⸂ten horan parʼ ayton⸃ en he kompsoteron eschen· ⸂eipan oyn⸃ aytῷ hoti ⸀Ἐchthes horan hebdomen apheken ayton ho pyretos.
Edified Edition (EDE)Then he inquired of them the hour when he got better. And they said to him, "Yesterday at the seventh hour the fever left him."

53
Phonetic (Greek): egno oyn ho pater ⸀hoti ekeinῃ tῇ horᾳ en he eipen aytῷ ho ⸀Ἰesoys· Ὁ yhios sou zῇ, kai episteusen aytos kai he oikia aytoy hole.
Edified Edition (EDE)So the father knew that it was at the same hour in which Jesus said to him, "Your son lives." And he himself believed, and his whole household.

54
Phonetic (Greek): toyto ⸀de palin deyteron semeion epoiesen ho Ἰesoys elthon ek tes Ἰoudaias eis ten Galilaian.
Edified Edition (EDE)This again was the second sign Jesus did when He had come out of Judea into Galilee.
