Chapter 7
1
Phonetic (Greek): Ἢ agnoeite, adelphoi, ginoskousin gar nomon lalo, hoti ho nomos kyrieyei toy anthropou ephʼ hoson chronon zῇ;
Edified Edition (EDE)Or do you not know, brothers (for I speak to those who know the law), that the law has dominion over a man as long as he lives?

Ἢ ἀγνοεῖτε, ἀδελφοί, γινώσκουσιν γὰρ νόμον λαλῶ, ὅτι ὁ νόμος κυριεύει τοῦ ἀνθρώπου ἐφʼ ὅσον χρόνον ζῇ;

2
Phonetic (Greek): he gar hypandros gyne tῷ zonti andri dedetai nomῳ· ean de apothanῃ ho aner, katergetai apo toy nomou toy andros.
Edified Edition (EDE)For the woman who has a husband is bound by the law to her husband as long as he lives. But if the husband dies, she is released from the law of her husband.

3
Phonetic (Greek): ara oyn zontos toy andros moichalis chrematisei ean genetai andri heterῳ· ean de apothanῃ ho aner, eleuthera estin apo toy nomou, toy me einai ayten moichalida genomenen andri heterῳ.
Edified Edition (EDE)So then if, while her husband lives, she marries another man, she will be called an adulteress; but if her husband dies, she is free from that law, so that she is no adulteress, though she has married another man.

4
Phonetic (Greek): Ὥste, adelphoi mou, kai hymeis ethanatothete tῷ nomῳ dia toy somatos toy Christoy, eis to genesthai hymas heterῳ, tῷ ek nekron egerthenti hina karpophoresomen tῷ theῷ.
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore, my brothers, you also have become dead to the law through the body of Christ, that you may be married to another, to Him who was raised from the dead, that we should bear fruit to God.

5
Phonetic (Greek): hote gar emen en tῇ sarki, ta pathemata ton hamartion ta dia toy nomou energeito en tois melesin hemon eis to karpophoresai tῷ thanatῳ·
Edified Edition (EDE)For when we were in the flesh, the sinful passions which were aroused by the law were at work in our members to bear fruit to death.

6
Phonetic (Greek): nyni de katergethemen apo toy nomou, apothanontes en ho kateichometha, hoste douleyein hemas en kainoteti pneymatos kai oy palaioteti grammatos.
Edified Edition (EDE)But now we have been delivered from the law, having died to what we were held by, so that we should serve in the newness of the Spirit and not in the oldness of the letter.

7
Phonetic (Greek): Ti oyn eroymen; ho nomos hamartia; me genoito· alla ten hamartian oyk egnon ei me dia nomou, ten te gar epithymian oyk edein ei me ho nomos elegen· Oyk epithymeseis·
Edified Edition (EDE)What shall we say then? Is the law sin? Certainly not! On the contrary, I would not have known sin except through the law. For I would not have known covetousness unless the law had said, "You shall not covet."

8
Phonetic (Greek): aphormen de laboysa he hamartia dia tes entoles kateirgasato en emoi pasan epithymian, choris gar nomou hamartia nekra.
Edified Edition (EDE)But sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, produced in me all manner of evil desire. For apart from the law sin was dead.

9
Phonetic (Greek): ego de ezon choris nomou pote· elthoyses de tes entoles he hamartia anezesen,
Edified Edition (EDE)I was alive once without the law, but when the commandment came, sin revived and I died.

10
Phonetic (Greek): ego de apethanon, kai ehyrethe moi he entole he eis zoen ahyte eis thanaton·
Edified Edition (EDE)And the commandment, which was to bring life, I found to bring death.

11
Phonetic (Greek): he gar hamartia aphormen laboysa dia tes entoles exepatesen me kai diʼ aytes apekteinen.
Edified Edition (EDE)For sin, taking opportunity by the commandment, deceived me, and by it killed me.

12
Phonetic (Greek): hoste ho men nomos hagios, kai he entole hagia kai dikaia kai agathe.
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.

13
Phonetic (Greek): To oyn agathon emoi ⸀egeneto thanatos; me genoito· alla he hamartia, hina phanῇ hamartia dia toy agathoy moi katergazomene thanaton· hina genetai kathʼ hyperbolen hamartolos he hamartia dia tes entoles.
Edified Edition (EDE)Has then what is good become death to me? Certainly not! But sin, that it might appear sin, was producing death in me through what is good, so that sin through the commandment might become exceedingly sinful.

14
Phonetic (Greek): Oidamen gar hoti ho nomos pneumatikos estin· ego de ⸀sarkinos eimi, pepramenos hypo ten hamartian.
Edified Edition (EDE)For we know that the law is spiritual, but I am carnal, sold under sin.

15
Phonetic (Greek): ho gar katergazomai oy ginosko· oy gar ho thelo toyto prasso, allʼ ho miso toyto poio.
Edified Edition (EDE)For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practise; but what I hate, that I do.

16
Phonetic (Greek): ei de ho oy thelo toyto poio, symphemi tῷ nomῳ hoti kalos.
Edified Edition (EDE)If, then, I do what I will not to do, I agree with the law that it is good.

17
Phonetic (Greek): nyni de oyketi ego katergazomai ayto alla he ⸀oikoysa en emoi hamartia.
Edified Edition (EDE)But now, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

18
Phonetic (Greek): oida gar hoti oyk oikei en emoi, toytʼ estin en tῇ sarki mou, agathon· to gar thelein parakeitai moi, to de katergazesthai to kalon ⸀oy·
Edified Edition (EDE)For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh) nothing good dwells; for to will is present with me, but how to perform what is good I do not find.

19
Phonetic (Greek): oy gar ho thelo poio agathon, alla ho oy thelo kakon toyto prasso.
Edified Edition (EDE)For the good that I will to do, I do not do; but the evil I will not to do, that I practise.

20
Phonetic (Greek): ei de ho oy ⸀thelo toyto poio, oyketi ego katergazomai ayto alla he oikoysa en emoi hamartia.
Edified Edition (EDE)Now if I do what I will not to do, it is no longer I who do it, but sin that dwells in me.

21
Phonetic (Greek): Ehyrisko ara ton nomon tῷ thelonti emoi poiein to kalon hoti emoi to kakon parakeitai·
Edified Edition (EDE)I find then a law, that evil is present with me, the one who wills to do good.

22
Phonetic (Greek): synedomai gar tῷ nomῳ toy theoy kata ton eso anthropon,
Edified Edition (EDE)For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man.

23
Phonetic (Greek): blepo de heteron nomon en tois melesin mou antistrateuomenon tῷ nomῳ toy noos mou kai aichmalotizonta me ⸀en tῷ nomῳ tes hamartias tῷ onti en tois melesin mou.
Edified Edition (EDE)But I see another law in my members, warring against the law of my mind, and bringing me into captivity to the law of sin which is in my members.

24
Phonetic (Greek): talaiporos ego anthropos· tis me ῥysetai ek toy somatos toy thanatou toytou;
Edified Edition (EDE)O wretched man that I am! Who will deliver me from this body of death?

ταλαίπωρος ἐγὼ ἄνθρωπος· τίς με ῥύσεται ἐκ τοῦ σώματος τοῦ θανάτου τούτου;

25
Phonetic (Greek): ⸀charis tῷ theῷ dia Ἰesoy Christoy toy kyriou hemon. Ἄra oyn aytos ego tῷ men noῒ douleyo nomῳ theoy, tῇ de sarki nomῳ hamartias.
Edified Edition (EDE)I thank God, through Jesus Christ our Lord! So then, with the mind I myself serve the law of God, but with the flesh the law of sin.
