Chapter 11

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּabetz֧u kaֽl-yishsera'e֛l 'el-dּavi֖yd cheber֣onah le'mo֑r hinּe֛h 'atzemeka֥ uֽbeshsareka֖ 'anaֽchenu׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then all Israel gathered to David at Hebron, saying, "Indeed we are your bone and your flesh.

וַיִּקָּבְצ֧וּ כָֽל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל אֶל־דָּוִ֖יד חֶבְר֣וֹנָה לֵאמֹ֑ר הִנֵּ֛ה עַצְמְךָ֥ וּֽבְשָׂרְךָ֖ אֲנָֽחְנוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): gּam-tּem֣ol gּam-shshileshsh֗om gּa֚m bּihey֣ot shsha'֣ul me֔leke 'atּa֛h hamּotzi֥y vehamּebi֖y 'et-yishsera'e֑l vayּo'mer֩ yehva֨h 'elohe֜yka leka֗ 'atּa֨h tire'e֤h 'et-'amּiy֙ 'et-yishsera'e֔l ve'atּah֙ tּiheye֣h nagi֔yd 'a֖l 'amּi֥y yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Also, in time past, even when Saul was king, you were the one who led Israel out and brought them in; and the LORD your God said to you, 'You shall shepherd My people Israel, and be ruler over My people Israel.'"

גַּם־תְּמ֣וֹל גַּם־שִׁלְשׁ֗וֹם גַּ֚ם בִּהְי֣וֹת שָׁא֣וּל מֶ֔לֶךְ אַתָּ֛ה הַמּוֹצִ֥יא וְהַמֵּבִ֖יא אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיֹּאמֶר֩ יְהוָ֨ה אֱלֹהֶ֜יךָ לְךָ֗ אַתָּ֨ה תִרְעֶ֤ה אֶת־עַמִּי֙ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְאַתָּה֙ תִּהְיֶ֣ה נָגִ֔יד עַ֖ל עַמִּ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va֠yּabo'u kּal-ziqene֨y yishsera'e֤l 'el-hamּe֨leke֙ cheber֔onah vayּikerot֩ lahe֨m dּavi֥yd bּeri֛yt bּecheber֖on lipene֣y yehva֑h vayּimeshshech֨u 'et-dּavi֤yd leme֨leke֙ 'al-yishsera'e֔l kּideba֥r yehva֖h bּeyad-shshemu'eֽl׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore all the elders of Israel came to the king at Hebron, and David made a covenant with them at Hebron before the LORD. And they anointed David king over Israel, according to the word of the LORD by Samuel.

וַ֠יָּבֹאוּ כָּל־זִקְנֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל אֶל־הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ חֶבְר֔וֹנָה וַיִּכְרֹת֩ לָהֶ֨ם דָּוִ֥יד בְּרִ֛ית בְּחֶבְר֖וֹן לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיִּמְשְׁח֨וּ אֶת־דָּוִ֤יד לְמֶ֨לֶךְ֙ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כִּדְבַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה בְּיַד־שְׁמוּאֵֽל׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֨leke dּavi֧yd vekal-yishsera'e֛l yerushshala֖im hi֣y yeb֑us veshsham֙ hayebusi֔y yoshshebe֖y ha'aֽretz׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And David and all Israel went to Jerusalem (which is Jebus), where the Jebusites were, the inhabitants of the land.

וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ דָּוִ֧יד וְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל יְרוּשָׁלִַ֖ם הִ֣יא יְב֑וּס וְשָׁם֙ הַיְבוּסִ֔י יֹשְׁבֵ֖י הָאָֽרֶץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer֜u yoshshebe֤y yebus֙ ledavi֔yd lo֥ tab֖o he֑nּah vayּilekּo֤d dּaviyd֙ 'et-metzuda֣t tziyּ֔on hi֖y 'i֥yr dּaviֽyd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But the inhabitants of Jebus said to David, "You shall not come in here!" Nevertheless David took the stronghold of Zion [1] (that is, the City of David).

וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ יֹשְׁבֵ֤י יְבוּס֙ לְדָוִ֔יד לֹ֥א תָב֖וֹא הֵ֑נָּה וַיִּלְכֹּ֤ד דָּוִיד֙ אֶת־מְצֻדַ֣ת צִיּ֔וֹן הִ֖יא עִ֥יר דָּוִֽיד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer dּavi֔yd kּal-makּe֤h yebusiy֙ bּari֣'shshona֔h yiheye֥h lero֖'shsh uleshsa֑r vayּa֧'al bּari'shshona֛h yo'a֥b bּen-tzeruya֖h vayehi֥y leroֽ'shsh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Now David said, "Whoever attacks the Jebusites first shall be chief and captain." And Joab the son of Zeruiah went up first, and became chief.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר דָּוִ֔יד כָּל־מַכֵּ֤ה יְבוּסִי֙ בָּרִ֣אשׁוֹנָ֔ה יִהְיֶ֥ה לְרֹ֖אשׁ וּלְשָׂ֑ר וַיַּ֧עַל בָּרִאשׁוֹנָ֛ה יוֹאָ֥ב בֶּן־צְרוּיָ֖ה וַיְהִ֥י לְרֹֽאשׁ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֥shsheb dּavi֖yd bּametza֑d 'al-kּe֥n qare'u-l֖o 'i֥yr dּaviֽyd׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then David dwelt in the stronghold; therefore they called it the City of David.

וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב דָּוִ֖יד בַּמְצָ֑ד עַל־כֵּ֥ן קָרְאוּ־ל֖וֹ עִ֥יר דָּוִֽיד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּi֤ben ha'iyr֙ misּabi֔yb min-hamּilּ֖o ve'ad-hasּabi֑yb veyo'a֕b yechayּe֖h 'et-shshe'a֥r ha'iֽyr׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And he built the city all around, from the Millo to the surrounding area. Joab repaired the rest of the city.

וַיִּ֤בֶן הָעִיר֙ מִסָּבִ֔יב מִן־הַמִּלּ֖וֹא וְעַד־הַסָּבִ֑יב וְיוֹאָ֕ב יְחַיֶּ֖ה אֶת־שְׁאָ֥ר הָעִֽיר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֥leke dּavi֖yd hal֣oke vegad֑ol vayhva֥h tzeba'֖ot 'imּֽo׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)So David became greater and greater, for the LORD of hosts was with him.

וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ דָּוִ֖יד הָל֣וֹךְ וְגָד֑וֹל וַיהוָ֥ה צְבָא֖וֹת עִמּֽוֹ׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֨lּeh ra'shshe֤y hagּibּoriym֙ 'ashshe֣r ledavi֔yd hamּitechazּeqi֨ym 'imּ֧o bemalekut֛o 'im-kּal-yishsera'e֖l lehameliyk֑o kּideba֥r yehva֖h 'al-yishsera'eֽl׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Now these were the heads of the mighty men whom David had, who strengthened themselves with him in his kingdom, with all Israel, to make him king, according to the word of the LORD concerning Israel.

וְאֵ֨לֶּה רָאשֵׁ֤י הַגִּבּוֹרִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְדָוִ֔יד הַמִּתְחַזְּקִ֨ים עִמּ֧וֹ בְמַלְכוּת֛וֹ עִם־כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְהַמְלִיכ֑וֹ כִּדְבַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֛lּeh misepּa֥r hagּibּori֖ym 'ashshe֣r ledavi֑yd yashshabe'a֣m bּen-chakemoni֗y ro֚'shsh hshlvshym hashshּa֣liyshshi֔ym hֽu'-'ore֧r 'et-chaniyt֛o 'al-shsheloshsh-me'֥ot chala֖l bּepa֥'am 'echaֽt׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And this is the number of the mighty men whom David had: Jashobeam the son of a Hachmonite, chief of the captains; he had lifted up his spear against three hundred, killed by him at one time.

וְאֵ֛לֶּה מִסְפַּ֥ר הַגִּבֹּרִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְדָוִ֑יד יָשָׁבְעָ֣ם בֶּן־חַכְמוֹנִ֗י רֹ֚אשׁ השלושים הַשָּׁ֣לִישִׁ֔ים הֽוּא־עוֹרֵ֧ר אֶת־חֲנִית֛וֹ עַל־שְׁלֹשׁ־מֵא֥וֹת חָלָ֖ל בְּפַ֥עַם אֶחָֽת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'achara֛yv 'ele'aza֥r bּen-dּod֖o ha'achochi֑y h֖u bּishsheloshsha֥h hagּibּoriֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)After him was Eleazar the son of Dodo, the Ahohite, who was one of the three mighty men.

וְאַחֲרָ֛יו אֶלְעָזָ֥ר בֶּן־דּוֹד֖וֹ הָאֲחוֹחִ֑י ה֖וּא בִּשְׁלוֹשָׁ֥ה הַגִּבֹּרִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hֽu'-haya֨h 'im-dּavi֜yd bּapּa֣s dּamּi֗ym vehapּelishshetּiym֙ ne'esepu-shsha֣m lamּilechama֔h vatּehi֛y cheleqa֥t hashsּade֖h mele'a֣h shse'ori֑ym veha'a֥m na֖su mipּene֥y pelishshetּiֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He was with David at Pasdammim, and there the Philistines were gathered together for battle, where there was a piece of ground full of barley. So the people fled from before the Philistines.

הֽוּא־הָיָ֨ה עִם־דָּוִ֜יד בַּפַּ֣ס דַּמִּ֗ים וְהַפְּלִשְׁתִּים֙ נֶאֱסְפוּ־שָׁ֣ם לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה וַתְּהִ֛י חֶלְקַ֥ת הַשָּׂדֶ֖ה מְלֵאָ֣ה שְׂעוֹרִ֑ים וְהָעָ֥ם נָ֖סוּ מִפְּנֵ֥י פְלִשְׁתִּֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽteyatzּeb֤u betoke-hacheleqah֙ vayּatzּiyl֔uha vayּakּ֖u 'et-pּelishshetּi֑ym vayּ֥oshsha yehva֖h tּeshshu'a֥h gedolaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)But they stationed themselves in the middle of that field, defended it, and struck the Philistines; and the LORD saved them by a great victory.

וַיִּֽתְיַצְּב֤וּ בְתוֹךְ־הַחֶלְקָה֙ וַיַּצִּיל֔וּהָ וַיַּכּ֖וּ אֶת־פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַיּ֥וֹשַׁע יְהוָ֖ה תְּשׁוּעָ֥ה גְדוֹלָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּered֡u shsheֽloshshah֩ min-hashshּeloshshi֨ym ro֤'shsh 'al-hatzּur֙ 'el-dּavi֔yd 'el-me'ara֖t 'adulּa֑m umachane֣h pelishshetּi֔ym chona֖h bּe'e֥meq repa'iֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Now three of the thirty chief men went down to the rock to David, into the cave of Adullam; and the army of the Philistines encamped in the Valley of Rephaim.

וַיֵּרְד֡וּ שְֽׁלוֹשָׁה֩ מִן־הַשְּׁלוֹשִׁ֨ים רֹ֤אשׁ עַל־הַצֻּר֙ אֶל־דָּוִ֔יד אֶל־מְעָרַ֖ת עֲדֻלָּ֑ם וּמַחֲנֵ֣ה פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים חֹנָ֖ה בְּעֵ֥מֶק רְפָאִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vedavi֖yd 'a֣z bּamּetzuda֑h unetzi֣yb pּelishshetּi֔ym 'a֖z bּebe֥yt laֽchem׃

Edified Edition (EDE)David was then in the stronghold, and the garrison of the Philistines was then in Bethlehem.

וְדָוִ֖יד אָ֣ז בַּמְּצוּדָ֑ה וּנְצִ֣יב פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים אָ֖ז בְּבֵ֥ית לָֽחֶם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vyt'v vayּite'a֥yv dּavi֖yd vayּo'ma֑r mi֚y yashsheqe֣niy ma֔yim mibּ֥or bּeֽyt-le֖chem 'ashshe֥r bּashshּaֽ'ar׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And David said with longing, "Oh, that someone would give me a drink of water from the well of Bethlehem, which is by the gate!"

ויתאו וַיִּתְאָ֥יו דָּוִ֖יד וַיֹּאמַ֑ר מִ֚י יַשְׁקֵ֣נִי מַ֔יִם מִבּ֥וֹר בֵּֽית־לֶ֖חֶם אֲשֶׁ֥ר בַּשָּֽׁעַר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּibeqe'֨u hashshּeloshsha֜h bּemachane֣h pelishshetּi֗ym vayּiֽshshe'abu-ma֨yim֙ mibּ֤or bּeֽyt-le֨chem֙ 'ashshe֣r bּashshּa֔'ar vayּishse'֖u vayּabi֣'u 'el-dּavi֑yd veloֽ'-'aba֤h daviyd֙ lishshetּota֔m vayenasּe֥ke 'ota֖m layhvaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So the three broke through the camp of the Philistines, drew water from the well of Bethlehem that was by the gate, and took it and brought it to David. However, David would not drink it, but poured it out to the LORD.

וַיִּבְקְע֨וּ הַשְּׁלֹשָׁ֜ה בְּמַחֲנֵ֣ה פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים וַיִּֽשְׁאֲבוּ־מַ֨יִם֙ מִבּ֤וֹר בֵּֽית־לֶ֨חֶם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּשַּׁ֔עַר וַיִּשְׂא֖וּ וַיָּבִ֣אוּ אֶל־דָּוִ֑יד וְלֹֽא־אָבָ֤ה דָוִיד֙ לִשְׁתּוֹתָ֔ם וַיְנַסֵּ֥ךְ אֹתָ֖ם לַיהוָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֡'mer chaliylah֩ lּi֨y me'eloha֜y me'ashs֣ot zo֗'t hada֣m ha'anashshiym֩ ha'e֨lּeh 'eshshetּe֤h benapeshshotam֙ kּi֣y benapeshshota֣m hebiy'֔um velo֥ 'aba֖h lishshetּota֑m 'e֣lּeh 'ashs֔u shshelo֖shshet hagּibּoriֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And he said, "Far be it from me before my God that I should do this! Shall I drink the blood of these men who have put their lives in jeopardy? For at the risk of their lives they brought it." Therefore he would not drink it. These things were done by the three mighty men.

וַיֹּ֡אמֶר חָלִילָה֩ לִּ֨י מֵאֱלֹהַ֜י מֵעֲשׂ֣וֹת זֹ֗את הֲדַ֣ם הָאֲנָשִׁים֩ הָאֵ֨לֶּה אֶשְׁתֶּ֤ה בְנַפְשׁוֹתָם֙ כִּ֣י בְנַפְשׁוֹתָ֣ם הֱבִיא֔וּם וְלֹ֥א אָבָ֖ה לִשְׁתּוֹתָ֑ם אֵ֣לֶּה עָשׂ֔וּ שְׁלֹ֖שֶׁת הַגִּבּוֹרִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'abeshsha֣y 'achiֽy-yo'a֗b h֤u hayah֙ ro֣'shsh hashshּeloshsha֔h vehu'֙ 'ore֣r 'et-chaniyt֔o 'al-shshelo֥shsh me'֖ot chala֑l vl velo-shshe֖m bּashshּeloshshaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Abishai the brother of Joab was chief of another three. He had lifted up his spear against three hundred men, killed them, and won a name among these three.

וְאַבְשַׁ֣י אֲחִֽי־יוֹאָ֗ב ה֤וּא הָיָה֙ רֹ֣אשׁ הַשְּׁלוֹשָׁ֔ה וְהוּא֙ עוֹרֵ֣ר אֶת־חֲנִית֔וֹ עַל־שְׁלֹ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת חָלָ֑ל ולא וְלוֹ־שֵׁ֖ם בַּשְּׁלוֹשָֽׁה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): min-hashshּeloshsha֤h bashshּena֨yim֙ nikebּa֔d vayehi֥y lahe֖m leshsa֑r ve'ad-hashshּeloshsha֖h loֽ'-baֽ'׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Of the three he was more honourable than the two and became their captain. However, he did not attain to the first three.

מִן־הַשְּׁלוֹשָׁ֤ה בַשְּׁנַ֨יִם֙ נִכְבָּ֔ד וַיְהִ֥י לָהֶ֖ם לְשָׂ֑ר וְעַד־הַשְּׁלוֹשָׁ֖ה לֹֽא־בָֽא׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּenaya֨h ben-yehoyada֧ bּen-'iֽyshsh-cha֛yil rab-pּe'ali֖ym miֽn-qabetze'e֑l h֣u hikּa֗h 'e֣t shshene֤y 'ariy'el֙ mo'a֔b ve֠hu yara֞d vehikּa֧h 'eֽt-ha'ari֛y bּet֥oke habּ֖or bּey֥om hashshּaֽleg׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Benaiah was the son of Jehoiada, the son of a valiant man from Kabzeel, who had done many deeds. He had killed two lion-like men of Moab. He also had gone down and killed a lion in the midst of a pit on a snowy day.

בְּנָיָ֨ה בֶן־יְהוֹיָדָ֧ע בֶּן־אִֽישׁ־חַ֛יִל רַב־פְּעָלִ֖ים מִֽן־קַבְצְאֵ֑ל ה֣וּא הִכָּ֗ה אֵ֣ת שְׁנֵ֤י אֲרִיאֵל֙ מוֹאָ֔ב וְ֠הוּא יָרַ֞ד וְהִכָּ֧ה אֶֽת־הָאֲרִ֛י בְּת֥וֹךְ הַבּ֖וֹר בְּי֥וֹם הַשָּֽׁלֶג׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehֽu'-hikּah֩ 'et-ha'i֨yshsh hamּitzeri֜y 'i֥yshsh midּa֣h ׀ chame֣shsh bּa'amּa֗h ubeya֨d hamּitzeri֤y chaniyt֙ kּimen֣or 'oregi֔ym vayּe֥red 'ela֖yv bּashshּa֑bet vayּigezo֤l 'eֽt-hachaniyt֙ miyּa֣d hamּitzeri֔y vayּaharege֖hu bּachaniytֽo׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And he killed an Egyptian, a man of great height, five cubits tall. In the Egyptian’s hand there was a spear like a weaver’s beam; and he went down to him with a staff, plucked the spear out of the Egyptian’s hand, and killed him with his own spear.

וְהֽוּא־הִכָּה֩ אֶת־הָאִ֨ישׁ הַמִּצְרִ֜י אִ֥ישׁ מִדָּ֣ה ׀ חָמֵ֣שׁ בָּאַמָּ֗ה וּבְיַ֨ד הַמִּצְרִ֤י חֲנִית֙ כִּמְנ֣וֹר אֹרְגִ֔ים וַיֵּ֥רֶד אֵלָ֖יו בַּשָּׁ֑בֶט וַיִּגְזֹ֤ל אֶֽת־הַחֲנִית֙ מִיַּ֣ד הַמִּצְרִ֔י וַיַּהַרְגֵ֖הוּ בַּחֲנִיתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): e֣lּeh 'ashsa֔h bּenaya֖hu bּen-yehoyada֑ velo-shshe֖m bּishsheloshsha֥h hagּibּoriֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)These things Benaiah the son of Jehoiada did, and won a name among the three mighty men.

אֵ֣לֶּה עָשָׂ֔ה בְּנָיָ֖הוּ בֶּן־יְהוֹיָדָ֑ע וְלוֹ־שֵׁ֖ם בִּשְׁלוֹשָׁ֥ה הַגִּבֹּרִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): min-hashshּeloshshi֗ym hinּ֤o nikebּad֙ h֔u ve'el-hashshּeloshsha֖h lo'-ba֑ vayeshsiyme֥hu davi֖yd 'al-mishshema'etּֽo׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Indeed he was more honourable than the thirty, but he did not attain to the first three. And David appointed him over his guard.

מִן־הַשְּׁלוֹשִׁ֗ים הִנּ֤וֹ נִכְבָּד֙ ה֔וּא וְאֶל־הַשְּׁלוֹשָׁ֖ה לֹא־בָ֑א וַיְשִׂימֵ֥הוּ דָוִ֖יד עַל־מִשְׁמַעְתּֽוֹ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vegibּore֖y hachayali֑ym 'ashsah-'el֙ 'achi֣y yo'a֔b 'elechana֥n bּen-dּod֖o mibּe֥yt laֽchem׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Also the mighty men of the armies were Asahel the brother of Joab, Elhanan the son of Dodo of Bethlehem,

וְגִבּוֹרֵ֖י הַחֲיָלִ֑ים עֲשָׂה־אֵל֙ אֲחִ֣י יוֹאָ֔ב אֶלְחָנָ֥ן בֶּן־דּוֹד֖וֹ מִבֵּ֥ית לָֽחֶם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): shshamּot֙ haharori֔y che֖letz hapּeloniֽy׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Shammoth the Harorite, Helez the Pelonite,

שַׁמּוֹת֙ הַהֲרוֹרִ֔י חֶ֖לֶץ הַפְּלוֹנִֽי׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): iyra֤ ben-'iqּeshsh֙ hatּeqo'i֔y 'abiy'e֖zer ha'anּetotiֽy׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Ira the son of Ikkesh the Tekoite, Abiezer the Anathothite,

עִירָ֤א בֶן־עִקֵּשׁ֙ הַתְּקוֹעִ֔י אֲבִיעֶ֖זֶר הָעֲנְּתוֹתִֽי׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): sibּekay֙ hachu֣shshati֔y 'iyla֖y ha'achochiֽy׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Sibbechai the Hushathite, Ilai the Ahohite,

סִבְּכַי֙ הַחֻ֣שָׁתִ֔י עִילַ֖י הָאֲחוֹחִֽי׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): maheray֙ hanּeto֣pati֔y che֥led bּeֽn-bּaֽ'ana֖h hanּetopatiֽy׃s
