Chapter 18
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehiy֙ 'acharey-ke֔n vayּa֥ke dּavi֛yd 'et-pּelishshetּi֖ym vayּakeniy'e֑m vayּiqּa֛ch 'et-gּa֥t ubenote֖yha miyּa֥d pּelishshetּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After this it came to pass that David struck the Philistines and subdued them, and took Gath and its towns out of the hand of the Philistines.

וַיְהִי֙ אַחֲרֵי־כֵ֔ן וַיַּ֥ךְ דָּוִ֛יד אֶת־פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים וַיַּכְנִיעֵ֑ם וַיִּקַּ֛ח אֶת־גַּ֥ת וּבְנֹתֶ֖יהָ מִיַּ֥ד פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֖ke 'et-mo'a֑b vayּihey֤u mo'ab֙ 'abadi֣ym ledavi֔yd noshse'e֖y minechaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then he struck Moab, and the Moabites became David’s servants and brought tribute.

וַיַּ֖ךְ אֶת־מוֹאָ֑ב וַיִּהְי֤וּ מוֹאָב֙ עֲבָדִ֣ים לְדָוִ֔יד נֹשְׂאֵ֖י מִנְחָֽה׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֥ke dּavi֛yd 'et-hadade'e֥zer meֽleke-tzoba֖h chama֑tah bּeleketּ֕o lehatzּi֥yb yad֖o bּiֽnehar-pּeraֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And David struck Hadarezer king of Zobah as far as Hamath, as he went to establish his dominion by the River Euphrates.

וַיַּ֥ךְ דָּוִ֛יד אֶת־הֲדַדְעֶ֥זֶר מֶֽלֶךְ־צוֹבָ֖ה חֲמָ֑תָה בְּלֶכְתּ֕וֹ לְהַצִּ֥יב יָד֖וֹ בִּֽנְהַר־פְּרָֽת׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּilekּod֩ dּavi֨yd mimּe֜nּu 'e֣lep re֗keb veshshibe'a֤t 'alapiym֙ pּaֽrashshi֔ym ve'eshseri֥ym 'e֖lep 'i֣yshsh rageli֑y vaye'aqּe֤r dּaviyd֙ 'et-kּal-hare֔keb vayּote֥r mimּe֖nּu me֥'ah raֽkeb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)David took from him a thousand chariots, seven thousand horsemen, and twenty thousand footmen. David also hamstrung all the chariot horses, but reserved one hundred chariots of them.

וַיִּלְכֹּד֩ דָּוִ֨יד מִמֶּ֜נּוּ אֶ֣לֶף רֶ֗כֶב וְשִׁבְעַ֤ת אֲלָפִים֙ פָּֽרָשִׁ֔ים וְעֶשְׂרִ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף אִ֣ישׁ רַגְלִ֑י וַיְעַקֵּ֤ר דָּוִיד֙ אֶת־כָּל־הָרֶ֔כֶב וַיּוֹתֵ֥ר מִמֶּ֖נּוּ מֵ֥אָה רָֽכֶב׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo'֙ 'ara֣m dּareme֔shseq la'ez֕or lahadade'e֖zer me֣leke tzoba֑h vayּa֤ke dּaviyd֙ bּa'ara֔m 'eshseriֽym-ushshena֥yim 'e֖lep 'iֽyshsh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When the Syrians of Damascus came to help Hadarezer king of Zobah, David killed twenty-two thousand of the Syrians.

וַיָּבֹא֙ אֲרַ֣ם דַּרְמֶ֔שֶׂק לַעְז֕וֹר לַהֲדַדְעֶ֖זֶר מֶ֣לֶךְ צוֹבָ֑ה וַיַּ֤ךְ דָּוִיד֙ בַּאֲרָ֔ם עֶשְׂרִֽים־וּשְׁנַ֥יִם אֶ֖לֶף אִֽישׁ׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֤shsem dּaviyd֙ bּa'ara֣m dּareme֔shseq vayehi֤y 'aram֙ ledavi֔yd 'abadi֖ym noshse'e֣y minecha֑h vayּ֤oshsha yehvah֙ ledavi֔yd bּeko֖l 'ashshe֥r halaֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then David put garrisons in Syria of Damascus; and the Syrians became David’s servants and brought tribute. So the LORD preserved David wherever he went.

וַיָּ֤שֶׂם דָּוִיד֙ בַּאֲרַ֣ם דַּרְמֶ֔שֶׂק וַיְהִ֤י אֲרָם֙ לְדָוִ֔יד עֲבָדִ֖ים נֹשְׂאֵ֣י מִנְחָ֑ה וַיּ֤וֹשַׁע יְהוָה֙ לְדָוִ֔יד בְּכֹ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָלָֽךְ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֣ch dּavi֗yd 'e֚t shshilete֣y hazּaha֔b 'ashshe֣r hay֔u 'a֖l 'abede֣y hadade'a֑zer vayebiy'e֖m yerushshalaiֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And David took the shields of gold that were on the servants of Hadarezer, and brought them to Jerusalem.

וַיִּקַּ֣ח דָּוִ֗יד אֵ֚ת שִׁלְטֵ֣י הַזָּהָ֔ב אֲשֶׁ֣ר הָי֔וּ עַ֖ל עַבְדֵ֣י הֲדַדְעָ֑זֶר וַיְבִיאֵ֖ם יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): umitּibecha֤t umikּun֙ 'are֣y hadade'e֔zer laqa֥ch dּavi֛yd necho֖shshet rabּa֣h me'o֑d bּa֣hּ ׀ 'ashsa֣h shshelomo֗h 'et-ya֤m hanּecho֨shshet֙ ve'et-haֽ'amּudi֔ym ve'e֖t kּele֥y hanּechoֽshshet׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Likewise from Tibhath and from Cun, cities of Hadarezer, David brought a large amount of bronze, with which Solomon made the bronze sea, the pillars, and the vessels of bronze.

וּמִטִּבְחַ֤ת וּמִכּוּן֙ עָרֵ֣י הֲדַדְעֶ֔זֶר לָקַ֥ח דָּוִ֛יד נְחֹ֖שֶׁת רַבָּ֣ה מְאֹ֑ד בָּ֣הּ ׀ עָשָׂ֣ה שְׁלֹמֹ֗ה אֶת־יָ֤ם הַנְּחֹ֨שֶׁת֙ וְאֶת־הָֽעַמּוּדִ֔ים וְאֵ֖ת כְּלֵ֥י הַנְּחֹֽשֶׁת׃פ

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshema֕ tּo֖'u me֣leke chama֑t kּi֚y hikּa֣h davi֔yd 'et-kּal-che֖yl hadade'e֥zer meֽleke-tzobaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Tou king of Hamath heard that David had struck the entire army of Hadarezer king of Zobah,

וַיִּשְׁמַ֕ע תֹּ֖עוּ מֶ֣לֶךְ חֲמָ֑ת כִּ֚י הִכָּ֣ה דָוִ֔יד אֶת־כָּל־חֵ֖יל הֲדַדְעֶ֥זֶר מֶֽלֶךְ־צוֹבָֽה׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֣ch 'et-hadֽoram-bּen֣o 'el-hamּeֽleke-dּa֠viyd lsh'vl lishshe'al-l֨o leshshal֜om uֽlebarak֗o 'al֩ 'ashshe֨r nilecha֤m bּahadade'e֨zer֙ vayּakּe֔hu kּiy-'i֛yshsh milecham֥ot tּo֖'u haya֣h hadade'a֑zer veko֗l kּele֛y zaha֥b vake֖sep unechoֽshshet׃
Edified Edition (EDE)he sent Hadoram his son to King David, to greet him and congratulate him, because he had fought against Hadarezer and struck him (for Hadarezer had been at war with Tou); and he sent all kinds of vessels of gold, silver, and bronze.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח אֶת־הֲדֽוֹרָם־בְּנ֣וֹ אֶל־הַמֶּֽלֶךְ־דָּ֠וִיד לשאול לִשְׁאָל־ל֨וֹ לְשָׁל֜וֹם וּֽלְבָרֲכ֗וֹ עַל֩ אֲשֶׁ֨ר נִלְחַ֤ם בַּהֲדַדְעֶ֨זֶר֙ וַיַּכֵּ֔הוּ כִּי־אִ֛ישׁ מִלְחֲמ֥וֹת תֹּ֖עוּ הָיָ֣ה הֲדַדְעָ֑זֶר וְכֹ֗ל כְּלֵ֛י זָהָ֥ב וָכֶ֖סֶף וּנְחֹֽשֶׁת׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): gּam-'ota֗m hiqedּi֞yshsh hamּe֤leke dּaviyd֙ layhva֔h 'im-hakּe֨sep֙ vehazּaha֔b 'ashshe֥r nashsa֖ mikּal-hagּoyi֑m meֽ'ed֤om umimּo'ab֙ umibּene֣y 'amּ֔on umipּelishshetּi֖ym umeֽ'amaleֽq׃
Edified Edition (EDE)King David also dedicated these to the LORD, along with the silver and the gold that he had brought from all these nations: from Edom, from Moab, from the people of Ammon, from the Philistines, and from Amalek.

גַּם־אֹתָ֗ם הִקְדִּ֞ישׁ הַמֶּ֤לֶךְ דָּוִיד֙ לַיהוָ֔ה עִם־הַכֶּ֨סֶף֙ וְהַזָּהָ֔ב אֲשֶׁ֥ר נָשָׂ֖א מִכָּל־הַגּוֹיִ֑ם מֵֽאֱד֤וֹם וּמִמּוֹאָב֙ וּמִבְּנֵ֣י עַמּ֔וֹן וּמִפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים וּמֵֽעֲמָלֵֽק׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'abeshsha֣y bּen-tzeruya֗h hikּa֤h 'et-'edom֙ bּege֣y hamּe֔lach shshemona֥h 'ashsa֖r 'aֽlep׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Moreover Abishai the son of Zeruiah killed eighteen thousand Edomites in the Valley of Salt.

וְאַבְשַׁ֣י בֶּן־צְרוּיָ֗ה הִכָּ֤ה אֶת־אֱדוֹם֙ בְּגֵ֣יא הַמֶּ֔לַח שְׁמוֹנָ֥ה עָשָׂ֖ר אָֽלֶף׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֤shsem bּeֽ'edom֙ netziybi֔ym vayּihey֥u kal-'ed֖om 'abadi֣ym ledavi֑yd vayּ֤oshsha yehvah֙ 'et-dּavi֔yd bּeko֖l 'ashshe֥r halaֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He put garrisons in Edom, and all the Edomites became David’s servants. And the LORD preserved David wherever he went.

וַיָּ֤שֶׂם בֶּֽאֱדוֹם֙ נְצִיבִ֔ים וַיִּהְי֥וּ כָל־אֱד֖וֹם עֲבָדִ֣ים לְדָוִ֑יד וַיּ֤וֹשַׁע יְהוָה֙ אֶת־דָּוִ֔יד בְּכֹ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָלָֽךְ׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּimelo֥ke dּavi֖yd 'al-kּal-yishsera'e֑l vayehi֗y 'oshse֛h mishshepּa֥t utzedaqa֖h lekal-'amּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So David reigned over all Israel, and administered judgement and justice to all his people.

וַיִּמְלֹ֥ךְ דָּוִ֖יד עַל־כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיְהִ֗י עֹשֶׂ֛ה מִשְׁפָּ֥ט וּצְדָקָ֖ה לְכָל־עַמּֽוֹ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): veyo'a֥b bּen-tzeruya֖h 'al-hatzּaba֑ viyhoshshapa֥t bּen-'achiyl֖ud mazekּiֽyr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Joab the son of Zeruiah was over the army; Jehoshaphat the son of Ahilud was recorder;

וְיוֹאָ֥ב בֶּן־צְרוּיָ֖ה עַל־הַצָּבָ֑א וִיהוֹשָׁפָ֥ט בֶּן־אֲחִיל֖וּד מַזְכִּֽיר׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vetzad֧oq bּen-'achiyt֛ub va'abiyme֥leke bּen-'ebeyata֖r kּohani֑ym veshshaveshsha֖ sopeֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Zadok the son of Ahitub and Abimelech the son of Abiathar were the priests; and Shavsha was scribe;

וְצָד֧וֹק בֶּן־אֲחִיט֛וּב וַאֲבִימֶ֥לֶךְ בֶּן־אֶבְיָתָ֖ר כֹּהֲנִ֑ים וְשַׁוְשָׁ֖א סוֹפֵֽר׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubenaya֨hu֙ bּen-yeh֣oyada֔ 'al-hakּereti֖y vehapּeleti֑y ubeney-davi֥yd hari'shshoni֖ym leya֥d hamּeֽleke׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Benaiah the son of Jehoiada was over the Cherethites and the Pelethites; and the sons of David were chief officials at the king’s side.

וּבְנָיָ֨הוּ֙ בֶּן־יְה֣וֹיָדָ֔ע עַל־הַכְּרֵתִ֖י וְהַפְּלֵתִ֑י וּבְנֵי־דָוִ֥יד הָרִאשֹׁנִ֖ים לְיַ֥ד הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃פ
