Chapter 23
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vedavi֥yd zaqe֖n veshsaba֣ yami֑ym vayּamele֛ke 'et-shshelomo֥h ben֖o 'al-yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So when David was old and full of days, he made his son Solomon king over Israel.

וְדָוִ֥יד זָקֵ֖ן וְשָׂבַ֣ע יָמִ֑ים וַיַּמְלֵ֛ךְ אֶת־שְׁלֹמֹ֥ה בְנ֖וֹ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe'esop֙ 'et-kּal-shsare֣y yishsera'e֔l vehakּohani֖ym vehaleviyּiֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And he gathered together all the leaders of Israel, with the priests and the Levites.

וַיֶּאֱסֹף֙ אֶת־כָּל־שָׂרֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְהַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים וְהַלְוִיִּֽם׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּisּaֽperu֙ haleviyּi֔m mibּe֛n shsheloshshi֥ym shshana֖h vama֑'elah vayehi֨y misepּara֤m legulegּelotam֙ ligebari֔ym shsheloshshi֥ym ushshemona֖h 'aֽlep׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now the Levites were numbered from the age of thirty years and upward; and their number by head count, man by man, was thirty-eight thousand.

וַיִּסָּֽפְרוּ֙ הַלְוִיִּ֔ם מִבֶּ֛ן שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה וָמָ֑עְלָה וַיְהִ֨י מִסְפָּרָ֤ם לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָם֙ לִגְבָרִ֔ים שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים וּשְׁמוֹנָ֖ה אָֽלֶף׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): me'e֗lּeh lenatzּe֨cha֙ 'al-mele֣'ket bּeyt-yehva֔h 'eshseri֥ym ve'arebּa'a֖h 'a֑lep veshshoteri֥ym veshshopeti֖ym shshe֥shshet 'alapiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Of these, twenty-four thousand were to oversee the work of the house of the LORD, six thousand were officers and judges,

מֵאֵ֗לֶּה לְנַצֵּ֨חַ֙ עַל־מְלֶ֣אכֶת בֵּית־יְהוָ֔ה עֶשְׂרִ֥ים וְאַרְבָּעָ֖ה אָ֑לֶף וְשֹׁטְרִ֥ים וְשֹׁפְטִ֖ים שֵׁ֥שֶׁת אֲלָפִֽים׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'arebּa֥'at 'alapi֖ym shsho'ari֑ym ve'arebּa֤'at 'alapiym֙ mehaֽleli֣ym layhva֔h bּakּeli֕ym 'ashshe֥r 'ashsi֖ytiy lehalּeֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)four thousand were gatekeepers, and four thousand praised the LORD with musical instruments, "which I made," said David, "for giving praise."

וְאַרְבַּ֥עַת אֲלָפִ֖ים שֹׁעֲרִ֑ים וְאַרְבַּ֤עַת אֲלָפִים֙ מְהַֽלְלִ֣ים לַיהוָ֔ה בַּכֵּלִ֕ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֖יתִי לְהַלֵּֽל׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּeֽchaleqe֥m dּavi֖yd macheleq֑ot s libene֣y levi֔y legereshsh֖on qeha֥t umerariֽy׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)And David divided them into divisions among the sons of Levi: Gershon, Kohath, and Merari.

וַיֶּֽחָלְקֵ֥ם דָּוִ֖יד מַחְלְק֑וֹת ס לִבְנֵ֣י לֵוִ֔י לְגֵרְשׁ֖וֹן קְהָ֥ת וּמְרָרִֽי׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): lagּereshshunּi֖y la'edּa֥n veshshime'iֽy׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Of the Gershonites: Laadan and Shimei.

לַגֵּרְשֻׁנִּ֖י לַעְדָּ֥ן וְשִׁמְעִֽי׃ס

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּene֣y la'edּa֗n haro֧'shsh yechiy'e֛l vezeta֥m veyo'e֖l shsheloshshaֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)The sons of Laadan: Jehiel the chief, then Zetham and Joel, three in all.

בְּנֵ֣י לַעְדָּ֗ן הָרֹ֧אשׁ יְחִיאֵ֛ל וְזֵתָ֥ם וְיוֹאֵ֖ל שְׁלֹשָֽׁה׃ס

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּene֣y shshime'i֗y shlmvt shshelomi֧yt vachaziy'e֛l vehara֖n shsheloshsha֑h 'e֛lּeh ra'shshe֥y ha'ab֖ot lela'edּaֽn׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)The sons of Shimei: Shelomith, Haziel, and Haran, three in all. These were the heads of the father’s houses of Laadan.

בְּנֵ֣י שִׁמְעִ֗י שלמות שְׁלוֹמִ֧ית וַחֲזִיאֵ֛ל וְהָרָ֖ן שְׁלֹשָׁ֑ה אֵ֛לֶּה רָאשֵׁ֥י הָאָב֖וֹת לְלַעְדָּֽן׃ס

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubene֣y shshime'i֔y ya֣chat ziyna֔ viy'֖ushsh uberiy'a֑h 'e֥lּeh beney-shshime'i֖y 'arebּa'aֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And the sons of Shimei were Jahath, Zina, Jeush, and Beriah. These four were the sons of Shimei.

וּבְנֵ֣י שִׁמְעִ֔י יַ֣חַת זִינָ֔א וִיע֖וּשׁ וּבְרִיעָ֑ה אֵ֥לֶּה בְנֵי־שִׁמְעִ֖י אַרְבָּעָֽה׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyehiy-ya֣chat haro֔'shsh veziyza֖h hashshּeni֑y viy'֤ushsh uberiy'ah֙ loֽ'-hirebּ֣u bani֔ym vayּiֽheyu֙ lebe֣yt 'a֔b lipequdּa֖h 'echaֽt׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Jahath was the chief and Zizah the second. But Jeush and Beriah did not have many sons; therefore they were counted as one father’s house according to their family.

וַֽיְהִי־יַ֣חַת הָרֹ֔אשׁ וְזִיזָ֖ה הַשֵּׁנִ֑י וִיע֤וּשׁ וּבְרִיעָה֙ לֹֽא־הִרְבּ֣וּ בָנִ֔ים וַיִּֽהְיוּ֙ לְבֵ֣ית אָ֔ב לִפְקֻדָּ֖ה אֶחָֽת׃ס

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּene֣y qeha֗t 'amera֥m yitzeha֛r cheber֥on ve'uzּiy'e֖l 'arebּa'aֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)The sons of Kohath: Amram, Izhar, Hebron, and Uzziel, four in all.

בְּנֵ֣י קְהָ֗ת עַמְרָ֥ם יִצְהָ֛ר חֶבְר֥וֹן וְעֻזִּיאֵ֖ל אַרְבָּעָֽה׃ס

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּene֥y 'amera֖m 'aharo֣n umoshshe֑h vayּibּade֣l 'aharo֡n leֽhaqedּiyshsho֩ qo֨deshsh qaֽdashshi֤ym hֽu'-ubanayv֙ 'ad-'ola֔m lehaqetiyr֩ lipene֨y yehva֧h leshsharet֛o ulebare֥ke bּishshem֖o 'ad-'olaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The sons of Amram: Aaron and Moses; and Aaron was set apart, he and his sons forever, that he should sanctify the most holy things, to burn incense before the LORD, to minister to Him, and to give the blessing in His name forever.

בְּנֵ֥י עַמְרָ֖ם אַהֲרֹ֣ן וּמֹשֶׁ֑ה וַיִּבָּדֵ֣ל אַהֲרֹ֡ן לְֽהַקְדִּישׁוֹ֩ קֹ֨דֶשׁ קָֽדָשִׁ֤ים הֽוּא־וּבָנָיו֙ עַד־עוֹלָ֔ם לְהַקְטִיר֩ לִפְנֵ֨י יְהוָ֧ה לְשָׁרְת֛וֹ וּלְבָרֵ֥ךְ בִּשְׁמ֖וֹ עַד־עוֹלָֽם׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): umoshshe֖h 'i֣yshsh ha'elohi֑ym bּana֕yv yiqּare'֖u 'al-shshe֥bet halּeviֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now the sons of Moses the man of God were counted with the tribe of Levi.

וּמֹשֶׁ֖ה אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים בָּנָ֕יו יִקָּרְא֖וּ עַל־שֵׁ֥בֶט הַלֵּוִֽי׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּene֣y moshshe֔h gּereshsho֖m ve'eliy'eֽzer׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The sons of Moses were Gershom and Eliezer.

בְּנֵ֣י מֹשֶׁ֔ה גֵּרְשֹׁ֖ם וֶאֱלִיעֶֽזֶר׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּene֥y gereshsh֖om shshebu'e֥l haroֽ'shsh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Of the sons of Gershom, Shebuel was the chief.

בְּנֵ֥י גֵרְשׁ֖וֹם שְׁבוּאֵ֥ל הָרֹֽאשׁ׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽhey֥u beney-'eliy'e֖zer rechabeya֣h haro֑'shsh velo'-haya֤h le'eliy'e֨zer֙ bּani֣ym 'acheri֔ym ubene֥y rechabeya֖h rab֥u lemaֽ'elah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Of the sons of Eliezer, Rehabiah was the chief. And Eliezer had no other sons, but the sons of Rehabiah were very many.

וַיִּֽהְי֥וּ בְנֵי־אֱלִיעֶ֖זֶר רְחַבְיָ֣ה הָרֹ֑אשׁ וְלֹא־הָיָ֤ה לֶאֱלִיעֶ֨זֶר֙ בָּנִ֣ים אֲחֵרִ֔ים וּבְנֵ֥י רְחַבְיָ֖ה רָב֥וּ לְמָֽעְלָה׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּene֥y yitzeha֖r shshelomi֥yt haroֽ'shsh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Of the sons of Izhar, Shelomith was the chief.

בְּנֵ֥י יִצְהָ֖ר שְׁלֹמִ֥ית הָרֹֽאשׁ׃ס

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּene֖y cheber֑on yeriyּa֤hu haro'shsh֙ 'amareya֣h hashshּeni֔y yachaziy'el֙ hashshּeliyshshi֔y viֽyqame'a֖m harebiy'iֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Of the sons of Hebron, Jeriah was the first, Amariah the second, Jahaziel the third, and Jekameam the fourth.

בְּנֵ֖י חֶבְר֑וֹן יְרִיָּ֤הוּ הָרֹאשׁ֙ אֲמַרְיָ֣ה הַשֵּׁנִ֔י יַחֲזִיאֵל֙ הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֔י וִֽיקַמְעָ֖ם הָרְבִיעִֽי׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּene֖y 'uzּiy'e֑l miyka֣h haro֔'shsh veyishshּiyּa֖h hashshּeniֽy׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Of the sons of Uzziel, Michah was the first and Jesshiah the second.

בְּנֵ֖י עֻזִּיאֵ֑ל מִיכָ֣ה הָרֹ֔אשׁ וְיִשִּׁיָּ֖ה הַשֵּׁנִֽי׃ס

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּene֤y merariy֙ macheli֣y umushshi֔y bּene֥y macheli֖y 'ele'aza֥r veqiֽyshsh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The sons of Merari were Mahli and Mushi. The sons of Mahli were Eleazar and Kish.

בְּנֵ֤י מְרָרִי֙ מַחְלִ֣י וּמוּשִׁ֔י בְּנֵ֥י מַחְלִ֖י אֶלְעָזָ֥ר וְקִֽישׁ׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨mat֙ 'ele'aza֔r velo'-ha֥yu l֛o bּani֖ym kּi֣y 'im-bּan֑ot vayּishsּa'֥um bּeney-qi֖yshsh 'acheyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And Eleazar died, and had no sons, but only daughters; and their kinsmen, the sons of Kish, took them as wives.

וַיָּ֨מָת֙ אֶלְעָזָ֔ר וְלֹא־הָ֥יוּ ל֛וֹ בָּנִ֖ים כִּ֣י אִם־בָּנ֑וֹת וַיִּשָּׂא֥וּם בְּנֵי־קִ֖ישׁ אֲחֵיהֶֽם׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּene֣y mushshi֗y macheli֥y ve'e֛der viyrem֖ot shsheloshshaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The sons of Mushi were Mahli, Eder, and Jerimoth, three in all.

בְּנֵ֣י מוּשִׁ֗י מַחְלִ֥י וְעֵ֛דֶר וִירֵמ֖וֹת שְׁלֹשָֽׁה׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): e֣lּeh beneֽy-leviy֩ lebe֨yt 'aboteyhe֜m ra'shshe֧y ha'ab֣ot lipequdeyhe֗m bּemisepּa֤r shshemot֙ legulegּelota֔m 'oshseh֙ hamּela'ka֔h la'aboda֖t bּe֣yt yehva֑h mibּe֛n 'eshseri֥ym shshana֖h vamaֽ'elah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)These were the sons of Levi after the house of their fathers, even the heads of the father's houses, as they were counted by number of names by their head count, that did the work for the service of the house of the LORD, from the age of twenty years and upward.

אֵ֣לֶּה בְנֵֽי־לֵוִי֩ לְבֵ֨ית אֲבֹתֵיהֶ֜ם רָאשֵׁ֧י הָאָב֣וֹת לִפְקוּדֵיהֶ֗ם בְּמִסְפַּ֤ר שֵׁמוֹת֙ לְגֻלְגְּלֹתָ֔ם עֹשֵׂה֙ הַמְּלָאכָ֔ה לַעֲבֹדַ֖ת בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֑ה מִבֶּ֛ן עֶשְׂרִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה וָמָֽעְלָה׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֚y 'ama֣r dּavi֔yd heni֛ycha yehva֥h 'eloheֽy-yishsera'e֖l le'amּ֑o vayּishshekּo֥n bּiyrushshala֖im 'ad-le'olaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)For David said, "the LORD God of Israel has given rest to His people, that they may dwell in Jerusalem forever;

כִּ֚י אָמַ֣ר דָּוִ֔יד הֵנִ֛יחַ יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְעַמּ֑וֹ וַיִּשְׁכֹּ֥ן בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם עַד־לְעוֹלָֽם׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): vega֖m laleviyּi֑m 'eyn-lashse֧'t 'et-hamּishshekּa֛n ve'et-kּal-kּela֖yv la'abodatֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and also that the Levites shall no longer carry the tabernacle, nor any of the vessels for its service."

וְגַ֖ם לַלְוִיִּ֑ם אֵין־לָשֵׂ֧את אֶת־הַמִּשְׁכָּ֛ן וְאֶת־כָּל־כֵּלָ֖יו לַעֲבֹדָתֽוֹ׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y bedibere֤y daviyd֙ ha'a֣charoni֔ym he֖mּah misepּa֣r bּeney-levi֑y mibּe֛n 'eshseri֥ym shshana֖h ulemaֽ'elah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)For by the last words of David the Levites were numbered from twenty years old and upward;

כִּ֣י בְדִבְרֵ֤י דָוִיד֙ הָאַ֣חֲרֹנִ֔ים הֵ֖מָּה מִסְפַּ֣ר בְּנֵי־לֵוִ֑י מִבֶּ֛ן עֶשְׂרִ֥ים שָׁנָ֖ה וּלְמָֽעְלָה׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y ma'amada֞m leyad-bּene֣y 'aharo֗n la'abodat֙ bּe֣yt yehva֔h 'al-hachatzerot֙ ve'al-halּeshshak֔ot ve'aֽl-tahora֖t lekal-qo֑deshsh umֽa'ashse֔h 'aboda֖t bּe֥yt ha'elohiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)because their duty was to help the sons of Aaron in the service of the house of the LORD, in the courts and in the chambers, in the purifying of all holy things and the work of the service of the house of God,

כִּ֣י מַעֲמָדָ֞ם לְיַד־בְּנֵ֣י אַהֲרֹ֗ן לַעֲבֹדַת֙ בֵּ֣ית יְהוָ֔ה עַל־הַחֲצֵרוֹת֙ וְעַל־הַלְּשָׁכ֔וֹת וְעַֽל־טָהֳרַ֖ת לְכָל־קֹ֑דֶשׁ וּמַֽעֲשֵׂ֔ה עֲבֹדַ֖ת בֵּ֥ית הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): ulele֨chem haֽmּa'are֜ket uleso֤let leminechah֙ velireqiyqe֣y hamּatzּ֔ot velaֽmּachaba֖t velamּurebּa֑ket ulekal-meshsura֖h umidּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)both for the showbread and for the fine flour for the grain offering, whether for the unleavened cakes or for what is baked in the pan, or for what is well-mixed, and for all measures of volume and length;

וּלְלֶ֨חֶם הַֽמַּעֲרֶ֜כֶת וּלְסֹ֤לֶת לְמִנְחָה֙ וְלִרְקִיקֵ֣י הַמַּצּ֔וֹת וְלַֽמַּחֲבַ֖ת וְלַמֻּרְבָּ֑כֶת וּלְכָל־מְשׂוּרָ֖ה וּמִדָּֽה׃

30
Phonetic (Hebrew): vela'amod֙ bּabּo֣qer bּabּo֔qer lehod֥ot ulehalּe֖l layhva֑h veke֖n la'aֽreb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)to stand every morning to thank and praise the LORD, and likewise at evening;

וְלַעֲמֹד֙ בַּבֹּ֣קֶר בַּבֹּ֔קֶר לְהֹד֥וֹת וּלְהַלֵּ֖ל לַיהוָ֑ה וְכֵ֖ן לָעָֽרֶב׃

31
Phonetic (Hebrew): uleko֨l ha'al֤ot 'olot֙ layhva֔h lashshּabּat֔ot lechodashshi֖ym velamּo'adi֑ym bּemisepּa֨r kּemishshepּa֧t 'aleyhe֛m tּami֖yd lipene֥y yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and at every presentation of a burnt offering to the LORD on the Sabbaths and on the New Moons and on the set feasts, by number according to the ordinance commanded to them, continually before the LORD;

וּלְכֹ֨ל הַעֲל֤וֹת עֹלוֹת֙ לַיהוָ֔ה לַשַּׁבָּת֔וֹת לֶחֳדָשִׁ֖ים וְלַמֹּעֲדִ֑ים בְּמִסְפָּ֨ר כְּמִשְׁפָּ֧ט עֲלֵיהֶ֛ם תָּמִ֖יד לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

32
Phonetic (Hebrew): veshshamer֞u 'et-mishsheme֣ret 'oֽhel-mo'e֗d ve'et֙ mishsheme֣ret haqּo֔deshsh umishsheme֕ret bּene֥y 'aharo֖n 'acheyhe֑m la'aboda֖t bּe֥yt yehvaֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)and that they should attend to the needs of the tabernacle of meeting, the needs of the holy place, and the needs of the sons of Aaron their brothers in the work of the service of the house of the LORD.

וְשָׁמְר֞וּ אֶת־מִשְׁמֶ֣רֶת אֹֽהֶל־מוֹעֵ֗ד וְאֵת֙ מִשְׁמֶ֣רֶת הַקֹּ֔דֶשׁ וּמִשְׁמֶ֕רֶת בְּנֵ֥י אַהֲרֹ֖ן אֲחֵיהֶ֑ם לַעֲבֹדַ֖ת בֵּ֥ית יְהוָֽה׃פ
