Chapter 12
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֥leke rechabe'a֖m shsheke֑m kּi֥y shsheke֛m bּa֥ kal-yishsera'e֖l lehameli֥yke 'otֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Rehoboam went to Shechem, for all Israel had gone there to make him king.

וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ רְחַבְעָ֖ם שְׁכֶ֑ם כִּ֥י שְׁכֶ֛ם בָּ֥א כָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְהַמְלִ֥יךְ אֹתֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֞y kּishshemo֣'a ׀ yarabe'a֣m bּen-neba֗t vehu'֙ 'ode֣nּu bemitzera֔yim 'ashshe֣r bּara֔ch mipּene֖y hamּe֣leke shshelomo֑h vayּe֥shsheb yarabe'a֖m bּemitzeraֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Jeroboam son of Nebat heard this (he was still in Egypt, where he had fled from King Solomon), he returned from Egypt.

וַיְהִ֞י כִּשְׁמֹ֣עַ ׀ יָרָבְעָ֣ם בֶּן־נְבָ֗ט וְהוּא֙ עוֹדֶ֣נּוּ בְמִצְרַ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֣ר בָּרַ֔ח מִפְּנֵ֖י הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֑ה וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב יָרָבְעָ֖ם בְּמִצְרָֽיִם׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּishshelechu֙ vayּiqere'u-l֔o vyb'v vayּabo֥ yarabe'a֖m vekal-qeha֣l yishsera'e֑l vaֽyedabּer֔u 'el-rechabe'a֖m le'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So they sent for Jeroboam, and he and the whole assembly of Israel went to Rehoboam and said to him:

וַֽיִּשְׁלְחוּ֙ וַיִּקְרְאוּ־ל֔וֹ ויבאו וַיָּבֹ֥א יָרָבְעָ֖ם וְכָל־קְהַ֣ל יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַֽיְדַבְּר֔וּ אֶל־רְחַבְעָ֖ם לֵאמֹֽר׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): abi֖yka hiqeshsha֣h 'et-'ulּe֑nu ve'atּa֡h 'atּa֣h haqel֩ me'aboda֨t 'abi֜yka haqּashsha֗h ume'ulּ֧o hakּabe֛d 'ashsher-nata֥n 'ale֖ynu vena'abedeֽkּa׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Your father put a heavy yoke on us, but now lighten the harsh labour and the heavy yoke he put on us, and we will serve you.'

אָבִ֖יךָ הִקְשָׁ֣ה אֶת־עֻלֵּ֑נוּ וְאַתָּ֡ה עַתָּ֣ה הָקֵל֩ מֵעֲבֹדַ֨ת אָבִ֜יךָ הַקָּשָׁ֗ה וּמֵעֻלּ֧וֹ הַכָּבֵ֛ד אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥ן עָלֵ֖ינוּ וְנַעַבְדֶֽךָּ׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'aleyhe֗m lek֥u 'o֛d shsheloshsha֥h yami֖ym veshsh֣ubu 'ela֑y vayּelek֖u ha'aֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Rehoboam answered, 'Go away for three days and then come back to me.' So the people went away.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם לְכ֥וּ עֹ֛ד שְׁלֹשָׁ֥ה יָמִ֖ים וְשׁ֣וּבוּ אֵלָ֑י וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ הָעָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiua'a֞tz hamּe֣leke rechabe'a֗m 'et-hazּeqeniym֙ 'ashsher-hay֣u 'omedi֗ym 'et-pּeney֙ shshelomo֣h 'abi֔yv bּiֽheyot֥o cha֖y le'mo֑r 'e֚yke 'atּe֣m nֽo'atzi֔ym lehashshi֥yb 'et-haֽ'am-hazּe֖h dּabaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then King Rehoboam consulted the elders who had served his father Solomon during his lifetime. 'How would you advise me to answer these people?' he asked.

וַיִּוָּעַ֞ץ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ רְחַבְעָ֗ם אֶת־הַזְּקֵנִים֙ אֲשֶׁר־הָי֣וּ עֹמְדִ֗ים אֶת־פְּנֵי֙ שְׁלֹמֹ֣ה אָבִ֔יו בִּֽהְיֹת֥וֹ חַ֖י לֵאמֹ֑ר אֵ֚יךְ אַתֶּ֣ם נֽוֹעָצִ֔ים לְהָשִׁ֥יב אֶת־הָֽעָם־הַזֶּ֖ה דָּבָֽר׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vydbr vayedabּer֨u 'ela֜yv le'mo֗r 'im-ha֠yּom tּiֽheyeh-'e֜bed la'a֤m hazּeh֙ vaֽ'abadetּa֔m va'aniyta֕m vedibּaretּa֥ 'aleyhe֖m dּebari֣ym tobi֑ym vehay֥u leka֛ 'abadi֖ym kּal-hayּamiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They replied, 'If today you will be a servant to these people and serve them and give them a favourable answer, they will always be your servants.'

וידבר וַיְדַבְּר֨וּ אֵלָ֜יו לֵאמֹ֗ר אִם־הַ֠יּוֹם תִּֽהְיֶה־עֶ֜בֶד לָעָ֤ם הַזֶּה֙ וַֽעֲבַדְתָּ֔ם וַעֲנִיתָ֕ם וְדִבַּרְתָּ֥ אֲלֵיהֶ֖ם דְּבָרִ֣ים טוֹבִ֑ים וְהָי֥וּ לְךָ֛ עֲבָדִ֖ים כָּל־הַיָּמִֽים׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּa'azo֛b 'et-'atza֥t hazּeqeni֖ym 'ashshe֣r ye'atzu֑hu vayּiua'a֗tz 'et-hayeladiym֙ 'ashshe֣r gּadel֣u 'itּ֔o 'ashshe֥r ha'omedi֖ym lepanaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But Rehoboam rejected the advice the elders gave him and consulted the young men who had grown up with him and were serving him.

וַֽיַּעֲזֹ֛ב אֶת־עֲצַ֥ת הַזְּקֵנִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר יְעָצֻ֑הוּ וַיִּוָּעַ֗ץ אֶת־הַיְלָדִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר גָּדְל֣וּ אִתּ֔וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר הָעֹמְדִ֖ים לְפָנָֽיו׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'aleyhe֗m ma֚h 'atּe֣m nֽo'atzi֔ym venashshi֥yb dּaba֖r 'et-ha'a֣m hazּe֑h 'ashshe֨r dּibּer֤u 'elay֙ le'mo֔r haqel֙ min-ha'o֔l 'ashsher-nata֥n 'abi֖yka 'aleֽynu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He asked them, 'What is your advice? How should we answer these people who say to me, "Lighten the yoke your father put on us"?'

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם מָ֚ה אַתֶּ֣ם נֽוֹעָצִ֔ים וְנָשִׁ֥יב דָּבָ֖ר אֶת־הָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֑ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבְּר֤וּ אֵלַי֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הָקֵל֙ מִן־הָעֹ֔ל אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥ן אָבִ֖יךָ עָלֵֽינוּ׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּer֣u 'ela֗yv hayeladiym֙ 'ashshe֨r gּadel֣u 'itּo֮ le'mor֒ kּoֽh-to'ma֣r la'a֣m hazּe֡h 'ashsher֩ dּibּer֨u 'ele֜yka le'mo֗r 'abi֨yka֙ hikebּi֣yd 'et-'ulּe֔nu ve'atּa֖h haqe֣l me'ale֑ynu kּo֚h tּedabּe֣r 'aleyhe֔m qaֽtanּi֥y 'aba֖h mimּatene֥y 'abiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The young men who had grown up with him replied, 'Tell these people who have said to you, "Your father made our yoke heavy, but make it lighter for us", tell them, "My little finger is thicker than my father’s waist."'

וַיְדַבְּר֣וּ אֵלָ֗יו הַיְלָדִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֨ר גָּדְל֣וּ אִתּוֹ֮ לֵאמֹר֒ כֹּֽה־תֹאמַ֣ר לָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֡ה אֲשֶׁר֩ דִּבְּר֨וּ אֵלֶ֜יךָ לֵאמֹ֗ר אָבִ֨יךָ֙ הִכְבִּ֣יד אֶת־עֻלֵּ֔נוּ וְאַתָּ֖ה הָקֵ֣ל מֵעָלֵ֑ינוּ כֹּ֚ה תְּדַבֵּ֣ר אֲלֵיהֶ֔ם קָֽטָנִּ֥י עָבָ֖ה מִמָּתְנֵ֥י אָבִֽי׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֗h 'abiy֙ he'emi֤ys 'aleykem֙ 'o֣l kּabe֔d va'ani֖y 'osi֣yp 'aֽl-'ulּeke֑m 'abi֗y yisּa֤r 'etekem֙ bּashshּoti֔ym va'ani֕y 'ayasּe֥r 'eteke֖m bּa'aqerabּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'"My father laid on you a heavy yoke; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions."'

וְעַתָּ֗ה אָבִי֙ הֶעְמִ֤יס עֲלֵיכֶם֙ עֹ֣ל כָּבֵ֔ד וַאֲנִ֖י אוֹסִ֣יף עַֽל־עֻלְּכֶ֑ם אָבִ֗י יִסַּ֤ר אֶתְכֶם֙ בַּשּׁוֹטִ֔ים וַאֲנִ֕י אֲיַסֵּ֥ר אֶתְכֶ֖ם בָּעַקְרַבִּֽים׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vybv vayּab֨o yarabe'a֧m vekal-ha'a֛m 'el-rechabe'a֖m bּayּ֣om hashshּeliyshshi֑y kּa'ashshe֨r dּibּe֤r hamּe֨leke֙ le'mo֔r shsh֥ubu 'ela֖y bּayּ֥om hashshּeliyshshiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Three days later Jeroboam and all the people returned to Rehoboam, as the king had said, 'Come back to me in three days.'

ויבו וַיָּב֨וֹא יָרָבְעָ֧ם וְכָל־הָעָ֛ם אֶל־רְחַבְעָ֖ם בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֑י כַּאֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבֶּ֤ר הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר שׁ֥וּבוּ אֵלַ֖י בַּיּ֥וֹם הַשְּׁלִישִֽׁי׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֧'an hamּe֛leke 'et-ha'a֖m qashsha֑h vaֽyּa'azo֛b 'et-'atza֥t hazּeqeni֖ym 'ashshe֥r ye'atzuֽhu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The king answered the people harshly. Rejecting the advice given him by the elders,

וַיַּ֧עַן הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ אֶת־הָעָ֖ם קָשָׁ֑ה וַֽיַּעֲזֹ֛ב אֶת־עֲצַ֥ת הַזְּקֵנִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר יְעָצֻֽהוּ׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֣r 'aleyhe֗m kּa'atza֤t hayeladiym֙ le'mo֔r 'abiy֙ hikebּi֣yd 'eֽt-'ulּeke֔m va'ani֖y 'osi֣yp 'aֽl-'ulּeke֑m 'abi֗y yisּa֤r 'etekem֙ bּashshּoti֔ym va'ani֕y 'ayasּe֥r 'eteke֖m bּa'aqerabּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)he followed the advice of the young men and said, 'My father made your yoke heavy; I will make it even heavier. My father scourged you with whips; I will scourge you with scorpions.'

וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר אֲלֵיהֶ֗ם כַּעֲצַ֤ת הַיְלָדִים֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אָבִי֙ הִכְבִּ֣יד אֶֽת־עֻלְּכֶ֔ם וַאֲנִ֖י אֹסִ֣יף עַֽל־עֻלְּכֶ֑ם אָבִ֗י יִסַּ֤ר אֶתְכֶם֙ בַּשּׁוֹטִ֔ים וַאֲנִ֕י אֲיַסֵּ֥ר אֶתְכֶ֖ם בָּעַקְרַבִּֽים׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): veloֽ'-shshama֥ hamּe֖leke 'el-ha'a֑m kּiֽy-hayeta֤h sibּah֙ me'i֣m yehva֔h lema֜'an haqi֣ym 'et-dּebar֗o 'ashshe֨r dּibּe֤r yehvah֙ bּeyad֙ 'achiyּa֣h hashshּiyloni֔y 'el-yarabe'a֖m bּen-nebaֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So the king did not listen to the people, for this turn of events was from the LORD, to fulfil the word the LORD had spoken to Jeroboam son of Nebat through Ahijah the Shilonite.

וְלֹֽא־שָׁמַ֥ע הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אֶל־הָעָ֑ם כִּֽי־הָיְתָ֤ה סִבָּה֙ מֵעִ֣ם יְהוָ֔ה לְמַ֜עַן הָקִ֣ים אֶת־דְּבָר֗וֹ אֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבֶּ֤ר יְהוָה֙ בְּיַד֙ אֲחִיָּ֣ה הַשִּׁילֹנִ֔י אֶל־יָרָבְעָ֖ם בֶּן־נְבָֽט׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣re kּal-yishsera'e֗l kּi֠y loֽ'-shshama֣ hamּeleke֮ 'aleyhem֒ vayּashshi֣bu ha'a֣m 'et-hamּe֣leke dּaba֣r ׀ le'mo֡r mah-lּanu֩ che֨leq bּedavi֜d veloֽ'-nachala֣h bּeben-yishsha֗y le'ohale֨yka֙ yishsera'e֔l 'atּa֕h re'e֥h beyteka֖ dּavi֑d vayּe֥leke yishsera'e֖l le'ohalaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When all Israel saw that the king refused to listen to them, they answered the king: 'What share do we have in David? What part in Jesse’s son? To your tents, Israel! Look after your own house, David!' So the Israelites went home.

וַיַּ֣רְא כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל כִּ֠י לֹֽא־שָׁמַ֣ע הַמֶּלֶךְ֮ אֲלֵיהֶם֒ וַיָּשִׁ֣בוּ הָעָ֣ם אֶת־הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ דָּבָ֣ר ׀ לֵאמֹ֡ר מַה־לָּנוּ֩ חֵ֨לֶק בְּדָוִ֜ד וְלֹֽא־נַחֲלָ֣ה בְּבֶן־יִשַׁ֗י לְאֹהָלֶ֨יךָ֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל עַתָּ֕ה רְאֵ֥ה בֵיתְךָ֖ דָּוִ֑ד וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְאֹהָלָֽיו׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubene֣y yishsera'e֔l hayּoshshebi֖ym bּe'are֣y yehuda֑h vayּimelo֥ke 'aleyhe֖m rechabe'aֽm׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)But as for the Israelites who were living in the towns of Judah, Rehoboam still ruled over them.

וּבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הַיֹּשְׁבִ֖ים בְּעָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה וַיִּמְלֹ֥ךְ עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם רְחַבְעָֽם׃פ

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֞ch hamּe֣leke rechabe'a֗m 'et-'adoram֙ 'ashshe֣r 'al-hamּa֔s vayּiregּem֨u kal-yishsera'e֥l bּ֛o 'e֖ben vayּamo֑t vehamּe֣leke rechabe'a֗m hite'amּetz֙ la'al֣ot bּamּerekּaba֔h lan֖us yerushshalaiֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)King Rehoboam sent out Adoniram, who was in charge of forced labour, but all Israel stoned him to death. King Rehoboam, however, managed to get into his chariot and escape to Jerusalem.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֞ח הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ רְחַבְעָ֗ם אֶת־אֲדֹרָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־הַמַּ֔ס וַיִּרְגְּמ֨וּ כָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל בּ֛וֹ אֶ֖בֶן וַיָּמֹ֑ת וְהַמֶּ֣לֶךְ רְחַבְעָ֗ם הִתְאַמֵּץ֙ לַעֲל֣וֹת בַּמֶּרְכָּבָ֔ה לָנ֖וּס יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּipeshshe'֤u yishsera'el֙ bּebe֣yt dּavi֔d 'a֖d hayּ֥om hazּeֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)So Israel has been in rebellion against the house of David to this day.

וַיִּפְשְׁע֤וּ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ בְּבֵ֣ית דָּוִ֔ד עַ֖ד הַיּ֥וֹם הַזֶּֽה׃ס

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֞y kּishshemo֤'a kּal-yishsera'el֙ kּiֽy-shsha֣b yarabe'a֔m vֽayּishshelech֗u vayּiqere'֤u 'oto֙ 'el-ha֣'eda֔h vayּameli֥yku 'ot֖o 'al-kּal-yishsera'e֑l lo֤ hayah֙ 'achare֣y beyt-dּavi֔d zulati֥y shsheֽbet-yehuda֖h lebadּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When all the Israelites heard that Jeroboam had returned, they sent and called him to the assembly and made him king over all Israel. Only the tribe of Judah remained loyal to the house of David.

וַיְהִ֞י כִּשְׁמֹ֤עַ כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ כִּֽי־שָׁ֣ב יָרָבְעָ֔ם וַֽיִּשְׁלְח֗וּ וַיִּקְרְא֤וּ אֹתוֹ֙ אֶל־הָ֣עֵדָ֔ה וַיַּמְלִ֥יכוּ אֹת֖וֹ עַל־כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל לֹ֤א הָיָה֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י בֵית־דָּוִ֔ד זוּלָתִ֥י שֵֽׁבֶט־יְהוּדָ֖ה לְבַדּֽוֹ׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vyb'v vayּabo֣ rechabe'am֮ yerushshalaim֒ vayּaqehel֩ 'et-kּal-bּe֨yt yehuda֜h ve'et-shshe֣bet bּineyami֗n me'a֨h ushshemoni֥ym 'e֛lep bּach֖ur 'oshse֣h milechama֑h lehilּachem֙ 'im-bּe֣yt yishsera'e֔l lehashshiyb֙ 'et-hamּeluka֔h lirechabe'a֖m bּen-shshelomoֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)When Rehoboam arrived in Jerusalem, he mustered all Judah and the tribe of Benjamin, a hundred and eighty thousand able-bodied men, to go to war against Israel and regain the kingdom for Rehoboam son of Solomon.

ויבאו וַיָּבֹ֣א רְחַבְעָם֮ יְרוּשָׁלִַם֒ וַיַּקְהֵל֩ אֶת־כָּל־בֵּ֨ית יְהוּדָ֜ה וְאֶת־שֵׁ֣בֶט בִּנְיָמִ֗ן מֵאָ֨ה וּשְׁמֹנִ֥ים אֶ֛לֶף בָּח֖וּר עֹשֵׂ֣ה מִלְחָמָ֑ה לְהִלָּחֵם֙ עִם־בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לְהָשִׁיב֙ אֶת־הַמְּלוּכָ֔ה לִרְחַבְעָ֖ם בֶּן־שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃פ

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehiy֙ dּeba֣r hֽa'elohi֔ym 'el-shshema'eya֥h 'iyshsh-ha'elohi֖ym le'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But this word of God came to Shemaiah the man of God:

וַיְהִי֙ דְּבַ֣ר הָֽאֱלֹהִ֔ים אֶל־שְׁמַעְיָ֥ה אִישׁ־הָאֱלֹהִ֖ים לֵאמֹֽר׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): emo֗r 'el-rechabe'a֤m bּen-shshelomoh֙ me֣leke yehuda֔h ve'el-kּal-bּe֥yt yehuda֖h ubineyami֑yn veye֥ter ha'a֖m le'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon king of Judah, to all Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people,'

אֱמֹ֗ר אֶל־רְחַבְעָ֤ם בֶּן־שְׁלֹמֹה֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֔ה וְאֶל־כָּל־בֵּ֥ית יְהוּדָ֖ה וּבִנְיָמִ֑ין וְיֶ֥תֶר הָעָ֖ם לֵאמֹֽר׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּo֣h 'ama֣r yehva֡h loֽ'-ta'alu֩ velo'-tilּa֨cham֜un 'im-'acheyke֣m bּeneֽy-yishsera'e֗l shsh֚ubu 'i֣yshsh lebeyt֔o kּi֧y me'itּi֛y niheya֖h hadּaba֣r hazּe֑h vayּishsheme'u֙ 'et-dּeba֣r yehva֔h vayּashshu֥bu lale֖ket kּideba֥r yehvaֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)'"This is what the LORD says: Do not go up to fight against your brothers, the Israelites. Go home, every one of you, for this is my doing."' So they obeyed the word of the LORD and went home again, as the LORD had ordered.

כֹּ֣ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֡ה לֹֽא־תַעֲלוּ֩ וְלֹא־תִלָּ֨חֲמ֜וּן עִם־אֲחֵיכֶ֣ם בְּנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל שׁ֚וּבוּ אִ֣ישׁ לְבֵית֔וֹ כִּ֧י מֵאִתִּ֛י נִהְיָ֖ה הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה וַיִּשְׁמְעוּ֙ אֶת־דְּבַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה וַיָּשֻׁ֥בוּ לָלֶ֖כֶת כִּדְבַ֥ר יְהוָֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּi֨ben yarabe'a֧m 'et-shsheke֛m bּeha֥r 'epera֖yim vayּe֣shsheb bּa֑hּ vayּetze֣ mishshּa֔m vayּi֖ben 'et-pּenu'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Jeroboam fortified Shechem in the hill country of Ephraim and lived there. From there he went out and built up Peniel.

וַיִּ֨בֶן יָרָבְעָ֧ם אֶת־שְׁכֶ֛ם בְּהַ֥ר אֶפְרַ֖יִם וַיֵּ֣שֶׁב בָּ֑הּ וַיֵּצֵ֣א מִשָּׁ֔ם וַיִּ֖בֶן אֶת־פְּנוּאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer yarabe'a֖m bּelibּ֑o 'atּa֛h tּashsh֥ub hamּamelaka֖h lebe֥yt dּaviֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jeroboam thought to himself, 'The kingdom will now likely revert to the house of David.'

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יָרָבְעָ֖ם בְּלִבּ֑וֹ עַתָּ֛ה תָּשׁ֥וּב הַמַּמְלָכָ֖ה לְבֵ֥ית דָּוִֽד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): iֽm-ya'ale֣h ׀ ha'a֣m hazּe֗h la'ashs֨ot zebachi֤ym bּebeyt-yehvah֙ bּiyr֣ushshalai֔m ve֠shshab le֣b ha'a֤m hazּeh֙ 'el-'ado֣neyhe֔m 'el-rechabe'a֖m me֣leke yehuda֑h vaharagu֕niy veshsha֖bu 'el-rechabe'a֥m meֽleke-yehudaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'If these people go up to offer sacrifices at the temple of the LORD in Jerusalem, they will again give their allegiance to their lord, Rehoboam king of Judah. They will kill me and return to King Rehoboam.'

אִֽם־יַעֲלֶ֣ה ׀ הָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֗ה לַעֲשׂ֨וֹת זְבָחִ֤ים בְּבֵית־יְהוָה֙ בִּיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם וְ֠שָׁב לֵ֣ב הָעָ֤ם הַזֶּה֙ אֶל־אֲדֹ֣נֵיהֶ֔ם אֶל־רְחַבְעָ֖ם מֶ֣לֶךְ יְהוּדָ֑ה וַהֲרָגֻ֕נִי וְשָׁ֖בוּ אֶל־רְחַבְעָ֥ם מֶֽלֶךְ־יְהוּדָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiua'a֣tz hamּe֔leke vayּa֕'ashs shshene֖y 'egele֣y zaha֑b vayּo֣'mer 'alehe֗m rab-lakem֙ me'al֣ot yerushshalai֔m hinּe֤h 'elohe֨yka֙ yishsera'e֔l 'ashshe֥r he'el֖uka me'e֥retz mitzeraֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After seeking advice, the king made two golden calves. He said to the people, 'It is too much for you to go up to Jerusalem. Here are your gods, Israel, who brought you up out of Egypt.'

וַיִּוָּעַ֣ץ הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַיַּ֕עַשׂ שְׁנֵ֖י עֶגְלֵ֣י זָהָ֑ב וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֲלֵהֶ֗ם רַב־לָכֶם֙ מֵעֲל֣וֹת יְרוּשָׁלִַ֔ם הִנֵּ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֨יךָ֙ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר הֶעֱל֖וּךָ מֵאֶ֥רֶץ מִצְרָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֥shsem 'et-ha'echa֖d bּebeֽyt-'e֑l ve'et-ha'echa֖d nata֥n bּedaֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)One he set up in Bethel, and the other in Dan.

וַיָּ֥שֶׂם אֶת־הָאֶחָ֖ד בְּבֵֽית־אֵ֑ל וְאֶת־הָאֶחָ֖ד נָתַ֥ן בְּדָֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֛y hadּaba֥r hazּe֖h lechatּa֑'t vayּelek֥u ha'a֛m lipene֥y ha'echa֖d 'ad-dּaֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And this thing became a sin; the people came to worship the one at Bethel and went as far as Dan to worship the other.

וַיְהִ֛י הַדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּ֖ה לְחַטָּ֑את וַיֵּלְכ֥וּ הָעָ֛ם לִפְנֵ֥י הָאֶחָ֖ד עַד־דָּֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֖'ashs 'et-bּe֣yt bּam֑ot vayּa֤'ashs kּoֽhaniym֙ miqetz֣ot ha'a֔m 'ashshe֥r loֽ'-hay֖u mibּene֥y leviֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jeroboam built shrines on high places and appointed priests from all sorts of people, even though they were not Levites.

וַיַּ֖עַשׂ אֶת־בֵּ֣ית בָּמ֑וֹת וַיַּ֤עַשׂ כֹּֽהֲנִים֙ מִקְצ֣וֹת הָעָ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹֽא־הָי֖וּ מִבְּנֵ֥י לֵוִֽי׃

32
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣'ashs yarabe'a֣m ׀ cha֡g bּacho֣deshsh hashshּemiyni֣y bּachamishshּaֽh-'ashsar֩ y֨om ׀ lacho֜deshsh kּecha֣g ׀ 'ashshe֣r bּiyhuda֗h vayּa֨'al֙ 'al-hamּizebּe֔cha kּe֤n 'ashsah֙ bּebeֽyt-'e֔l lezabּe֖cha la'agali֣ym 'ashsher-'ashsa֑h vehe'emiyd֙ bּebe֣yt 'e֔l 'et-kּohane֥y habּam֖ot 'ashshe֥r 'ashsaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He instituted a festival on the fifteenth day of the eighth month, like the festival held in Judah, and offered sacrifices on the altar. This he did in Bethel, sacrificing to the calves he had made. And at Bethel he also installed priests at the high places he had made.

וַיַּ֣עַשׂ יָרָבְעָ֣ם ׀ חָ֡ג בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ הַשְּׁמִינִ֣י בַּחֲמִשָּֽׁה־עָשָׂר֩ י֨וֹם ׀ לַחֹ֜דֶשׁ כֶּחָ֣ג ׀ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בִּיהוּדָ֗ה וַיַּ֨עַל֙ עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֔חַ כֵּ֤ן עָשָׂה֙ בְּבֵֽית־אֵ֔ל לְזַבֵּ֖חַ לָעֲגָלִ֣ים אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂ֑ה וְהֶעֱמִיד֙ בְּבֵ֣ית אֵ֔ל אֶת־כֹּהֲנֵ֥י הַבָּמ֖וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָֽׂה׃

33
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֜'al 'aֽl-hamּizebּe֣cha ׀ 'ashsher-'ashsa֣h bּebeֽyt-'e֗l bּachamishshּa֨h 'ashsa֥r yom֙ bּacho֣deshsh hashshּemiyni֔y bּacho֖deshsh 'ashsher-bּada֣ mlbd milּibּ֑o vayּa֤'ashs chag֙ libene֣y yishsera'e֔l vayּa֥'al 'al-hamּizebּe֖cha lehaqetiֽyr׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)On the fifteenth day of the eighth month, a month of his own choosing, he offered sacrifices on the altar he had built at Bethel. So he instituted the festival for the Israelites and went up to the altar to make offerings.

וַיַּ֜עַל עַֽל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֣חַ ׀ אֲשֶׁר־עָשָׂ֣ה בְּבֵֽית־אֵ֗ל בַּחֲמִשָּׁ֨ה עָשָׂ֥ר יוֹם֙ בַּחֹ֣דֶשׁ הַשְּׁמִינִ֔י בַּחֹ֖דֶשׁ אֲשֶׁר־בָּדָ֣א מלבד מִלִּבּ֑וֹ וַיַּ֤עַשׂ חָג֙ לִבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיַּ֥עַל עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ לְהַקְטִֽיר׃פ
