Chapter 17
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֩ 'eliyּa֨hu hatּishshebּi֜y mitּoshshabe֣y gile'ad֮ 'el-'ache'ab֒ chay-yehva֞h 'elohe֤y yishsera'el֙ 'ashshe֣r 'ama֣detּiy lepana֔yv 'im-yiheye֛h hashshּani֥ym ha'e֖lּeh ta֣l umata֑r kּi֖y 'im-lepi֥y debariֽy׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Elijah the Tishbite, from Tishbe in Gilead, said to Ahab, 'As the LORD, the God of Israel, lives, whom I serve, there will be neither dew nor rain in the next few years except at my word.'

וַיֹּאמֶר֩ אֵלִיָּ֨הוּ הַתִּשְׁבִּ֜י מִתֹּשָׁבֵ֣י גִלְעָד֮ אֶל־אַחְאָב֒ חַי־יְהוָ֞ה אֱלֹהֵ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָמַ֣דְתִּי לְפָנָ֔יו אִם־יִהְיֶ֛ה הַשָּׁנִ֥ים הָאֵ֖לֶּה טַ֣ל וּמָטָ֑ר כִּ֖י אִם־לְפִ֥י דְבָרִֽי׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֥y debar-yehva֖h 'ela֥yv le'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the word of the LORD came to Elijah:

וַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־יְהוָ֖ה אֵלָ֥יו לֵאמֹֽר׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): le֣ke mizּe֔h upani֥yta lּeka֖ qe֑demah venisetּaretּa֙ bּena֣chal kּeri֔yt 'ashshe֖r 'al-pּene֥y hayּaredּeֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Leave here, turn eastward and hide by the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan.'

לֵ֣ךְ מִזֶּ֔ה וּפָנִ֥יתָ לְּךָ֖ קֵ֑דְמָה וְנִסְתַּרְתָּ֙ בְּנַ֣חַל כְּרִ֔ית אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֖h mehanּa֣chal tּishshetּe֑h ve'et-ha'orebi֣ym tziui֔ytiy lekalekּeleka֖ shshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'You will drink from the brook, and I have directed the ravens to supply you with food there.'

וְהָיָ֖ה מֵהַנַּ֣חַל תִּשְׁתֶּ֑ה וְאֶת־הָעֹרְבִ֣ים צִוִּ֔יתִי לְכַלְכֶּלְךָ֖ שָֽׁם׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֥leke vayּa֖'ashs kּideba֣r yehva֑h vayּe֗leke vayּe֨shsheb֙ bּena֣chal kּeri֔yt 'ashshe֖r 'al-pּene֥y hayּaredּeֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So he did what the LORD had told him. He went to the Kerith Ravine, east of the Jordan, and stayed there.

וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ וַיַּ֖עַשׂ כִּדְבַ֣ר יְהוָ֑ה וַיֵּ֗לֶךְ וַיֵּ֨שֶׁב֙ בְּנַ֣חַל כְּרִ֔ית אֲשֶׁ֖ר עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הַיַּרְדֵּֽן׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): veha'orebi֗ym mebiy'i֨ym l֜o le֤chem ubashsar֙ bּabּo֔qer vele֥chem ubashsa֖r bּa'a֑reb umin-hanּa֖chal yishshetּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The ravens brought him bread and meat in the morning and bread and meat in the evening, and he drank from the brook.

וְהָעֹרְבִ֗ים מְבִיאִ֨ים ל֜וֹ לֶ֤חֶם וּבָשָׂר֙ בַּבֹּ֔קֶר וְלֶ֥חֶם וּבָשָׂ֖ר בָּעָ֑רֶב וּמִן־הַנַּ֖חַל יִשְׁתֶּֽה׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֛y miqּe֥tz yami֖ym vayּiyba֣shsh hanּa֑chal kּi֛y loֽ'-haya֥h ge֖shshem bּa'aֽretz׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Some time later the brook dried up because there had been no rain in the land.

וַיְהִ֛י מִקֵּ֥ץ יָמִ֖ים וַיִּיבַ֣שׁ הַנָּ֑חַל כִּ֛י לֹֽא־הָיָ֥ה גֶ֖שֶׁם בָּאָֽרֶץ׃ס

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֥y debar-yehva֖h 'ela֥yv le'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the word of the LORD came to him:

וַיְהִ֥י דְבַר־יְהוָ֖ה אֵלָ֥יו לֵאמֹֽר׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): q֣um le֤ke tzarepa֨tah֙ 'ashshe֣r letziyd֔on veyashshabetּa֖ shsha֑m hinּe֨h tziui֥ytiy shsha֛m 'ishshּa֥h 'alemana֖h lekalekּeleֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Go at once to Zarephath in the region of Sidon and stay there. I have directed a widow there to supply you with food.'

ק֣וּם לֵ֤ךְ צָרְפַ֨תָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר לְצִיד֔וֹן וְיָשַׁבְתָּ֖ שָׁ֑ם הִנֵּ֨ה צִוִּ֥יתִי שָׁ֛ם אִשָּׁ֥ה אַלְמָנָ֖ה לְכַלְכְּלֶֽךָ׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣qam ׀ vayּe֣leke tzarepa֗tah vayּabo'֙ 'el-pּe֣tach ha'i֔yr vehinּeֽh-shsha֛m 'ishshּa֥h 'alemana֖h meqoshshe֣shshet 'etzi֑ym vayּiqera֤ 'ele֨yha֙ vayּo'ma֔r qechiy-na֨ li֧y me'at-ma֛yim bּakּeli֖y ve'eshshetּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So he went to Zarephath. When he came to the town gate, a widow was there gathering sticks. He called to her and asked, 'Would you bring me a little water in a jar so I may have a drink?'

וַיָּ֣קָם ׀ וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ צָרְפַ֗תָה וַיָּבֹא֙ אֶל־פֶּ֣תַח הָעִ֔יר וְהִנֵּֽה־שָׁ֛ם אִשָּׁ֥ה אַלְמָנָ֖ה מְקֹשֶׁ֣שֶׁת עֵצִ֑ים וַיִּקְרָ֤א אֵלֶ֨יהָ֙ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר קְחִי־נָ֨א לִ֧י מְעַט־מַ֛יִם בַּכְּלִ֖י וְאֶשְׁתֶּֽה׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּe֖leke laqa֑chat vayּiqera֤ 'ele֨yha֙ vayּo'ma֔r liֽqechiy-na֥ li֛y pּat-le֖chem bּeyadeֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As she was going to get it, he called, 'And bring me, please, a piece of bread.'

וַתֵּ֖לֶךְ לָקַ֑חַת וַיִּקְרָ֤א אֵלֶ֨יהָ֙ וַיֹּאמַ֔ר לִֽקְחִי־נָ֥א לִ֛י פַּת־לֶ֖חֶם בְּיָדֵֽךְ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֗'mer chay-yehva֤h 'elohe֨yka֙ 'im-yeshsh-li֣y ma'֔og kּi֣y 'im-melo֤ kap-qe֨mach֙ bּakּa֔d ume'at-shshe֖men bּatzּapּa֑chat vehineni֨y meqoshshe֜shshet shshena֣yim 'etzi֗ym uba֨'tiy֙ va'ashsiyti֨yhu֙ li֣y velibeni֔y va'akalenu֖hu vamaֽtenu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'As surely as the LORD your God lives,' she replied, 'I don’t have any bread, only a handful of flour in a jar and a little olive oil in a jug. I am gathering a few sticks to take home and make a meal for myself and my son, so that we may eat it, and die.'

וַתֹּ֗אמֶר חַי־יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֶ֨יךָ֙ אִם־יֶשׁ־לִ֣י מָע֔וֹג כִּ֣י אִם־מְלֹ֤א כַף־קֶ֨מַח֙ בַּכַּ֔ד וּמְעַט־שֶׁ֖מֶן בַּצַּפָּ֑חַת וְהִנְנִ֨י מְקֹשֶׁ֜שֶׁת שְׁנַ֣יִם עֵצִ֗ים וּבָ֨אתִי֙ וַעֲשִׂיתִ֨יהוּ֙ לִ֣י וְלִבְנִ֔י וַאֲכַלְנֻ֖הוּ וָמָֽתְנוּ׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer 'ele֤yha 'eliyּa֨hu֙ 'al-tּi֣yre'i֔y bּo֖'iy 'ashsi֣y kidebare֑ke 'a֣ke 'ashsiy-li֣y mi֠shshּam 'uga֨h qetanּa֤h bari'shshonah֙ vehotze֣'te li֔y vela֣ke velibene֔ke tּa'ashsi֖y bּa'acharonaֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Elijah said to her, 'Don’t be afraid. Go home and do as you have said. But first make a small loaf of bread for me from what you have and bring it to me, and then make something for yourself and your son.'

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלֶ֤יהָ אֵלִיָּ֨הוּ֙ אַל־תִּ֣ירְאִ֔י בֹּ֖אִי עֲשִׂ֣י כִדְבָרֵ֑ךְ אַ֣ךְ עֲשִׂי־לִ֣י מִ֠שָּׁם עֻגָ֨ה קְטַנָּ֤ה בָרִאשֹׁנָה֙ וְהוֹצֵ֣אתְ לִ֔י וְלָ֣ךְ וְלִבְנֵ֔ךְ תַּעֲשִׂ֖י בָּאַחֲרֹנָֽה׃ס

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y koh֩ 'ama֨r yehva֜h 'elohe֣y yishsera'e֗l kּa֤d haqּe֨mach֙ lo֣ tikela֔h vetzapּa֥chat hashshּe֖men lo֣ techesa֑r 'a֠d y֧om ttn tּet-yehva֛h gּe֖shshem 'al-pּene֥y ha'adamaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'For this is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: "The jar of flour will not be used up and the jug of oil will not run dry until the day the LORD sends rain on the land."'

כִּ֣י כֹה֩ אָמַ֨ר יְהוָ֜ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל כַּ֤ד הַקֶּ֨מַח֙ לֹ֣א תִכְלָ֔ה וְצַפַּ֥חַת הַשֶּׁ֖מֶן לֹ֣א תֶחְסָ֑ר עַ֠ד י֧וֹם תתן תֵּת־יְהוָ֛ה גֶּ֖שֶׁם עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָֽה׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּe֥leke vatּa'ashse֖h kּideba֣r 'eliyּa֑hu vatּo֧'kal hv'-vhy hiֽy'-vah֛u ubeyta֖hּ yamiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)She went away and did as Elijah had told her. So there was food every day for Elijah and for the woman and her family.

וַתֵּ֥לֶךְ וַתַּעֲשֶׂ֖ה כִּדְבַ֣ר אֵלִיָּ֑הוּ וַתֹּ֧אכַל הוא־והיא הִֽיא־וָה֛וּא וּבֵיתָ֖הּ יָמִֽים׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּa֤d haqּe֨mach֙ lo֣ kala֔tah vetzapּa֥chat hashshּe֖men lo֣ chase֑r kּideba֣r yehva֔h 'ashshe֥r dּibּe֖r bּeya֥d 'eliyּaֽhu׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)For the jar of flour was not used up and the jug of oil did not run dry, in accordance with the word of the LORD spoken by Elijah.

כַּ֤ד הַקֶּ֨מַח֙ לֹ֣א כָלָ֔תָה וְצַפַּ֥חַת הַשֶּׁ֖מֶן לֹ֣א חָסֵ֑ר כִּדְבַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֶּ֖ר בְּיַ֥ד אֵלִיָּֽהוּ׃פ

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y 'achar֙ hadּebari֣ym ha'e֔lּeh chala֕h bּen-ha'ishshּa֖h bּa'ala֣t habּa֑yit vayehi֤y chaleyo֙ chaza֣q me'o֔d 'a֛d 'ashshe֥r lo'-nֽoterah-bּ֖o neshshamaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Some time later the son of the woman who owned the house became ill. He grew worse and worse, and finally stopped breathing.

וַיְהִ֗י אַחַר֙ הַדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה חָלָ֕ה בֶּן־הָאִשָּׁ֖ה בַּעֲלַ֣ת הַבָּ֑יִת וַיְהִ֤י חָלְיוֹ֙ חָזָ֣ק מְאֹ֔ד עַ֛ד אֲשֶׁ֥ר לֹא־נֽוֹתְרָה־בּ֖וֹ נְשָׁמָֽה׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֨'mer֙ 'el-'e֣liyּa֔hu mah-lּi֥y vala֖ke 'i֣yshsh ha'elohi֑ym bּa֧'ta 'ela֛y lehazekּi֥yr 'et-'avoni֖y ulehami֥yt 'et-bּeniֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)She said to Elijah, 'What do you have against me, man of God? Did you come to remind me of my sin and kill my son?'

וַתֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־אֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ מַה־לִּ֥י וָלָ֖ךְ אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים בָּ֧אתָ אֵלַ֛י לְהַזְכִּ֥יר אֶת־עֲוֺנִ֖י וּלְהָמִ֥ית אֶת־בְּנִֽי׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer 'ele֖yha tּeniֽy-li֣y 'et-bּene֑ke vayּiqּache֣hu mecheyqa֗hּ vaֽyּa'ale֨hu֙ 'el-ha'aliyּa֗h 'ashsher-hu'֙ yoshshe֣b shsha֔m vayּashshekּibe֖hu 'al-mitּatֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Give me your son,' Elijah replied. He took him from her arms, carried him to the upper room where he was staying, and laid him on his bed.

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אֵלֶ֖יהָ תְּנִֽי־לִ֣י אֶת־בְּנֵ֑ךְ וַיִּקָּחֵ֣הוּ מֵחֵיקָ֗הּ וַֽיַּעֲלֵ֨הוּ֙ אֶל־הָעֲלִיָּ֗ה אֲשֶׁר־הוּא֙ יֹשֵׁ֣ב שָׁ֔ם וַיַּשְׁכִּבֵ֖הוּ עַל־מִטָּתֽוֹ׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֥ 'el-yehva֖h vayּo'ma֑r yehva֣h 'eloha֔y ha֠gam 'al-ha'alemana֞h 'ashsher-'ani֨y mitegּore֥r 'imּa֛hּ hare'֖ota lehami֥yt 'et-bּenaֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then he cried out to the LORD, 'LORD my God, have you brought tragedy even on this widow I am staying with, by causing her son to die?'

וַיִּקְרָ֥א אֶל־יְהוָ֖ה וַיֹּאמַ֑ר יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהָ֔י הֲ֠גַם עַל־הָאַלְמָנָ֞ה אֲשֶׁר־אֲנִ֨י מִתְגּוֹרֵ֥ר עִמָּ֛הּ הֲרֵע֖וֹתָ לְהָמִ֥ית אֶת־בְּנָֽהּ׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitemode֤d 'al-hayּe֨led֙ shshalo֣shsh pּe'ami֔ym vayּiqera֥ 'el-yehva֖h vayּo'ma֑r yehva֣h 'eloha֔y tּa֥shshab na֛ neֽpeshsh-hayּe֥led hazּe֖h 'al-qirebּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then he stretched himself out on the boy three times and cried out to the LORD, 'LORD my God, let this boy’s life return to him!'

וַיִּתְמֹדֵ֤ד עַל־הַיֶּ֨לֶד֙ שָׁלֹ֣שׁ פְּעָמִ֔ים וַיִּקְרָ֥א אֶל־יְהוָ֖ה וַיֹּאמַ֑ר יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהָ֔י תָּ֥שָׁב נָ֛א נֶֽפֶשׁ־הַיֶּ֥לֶד הַזֶּ֖ה עַל־קִרְבּֽוֹ׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshema֥ yehva֖h bּeq֣ol 'eliyּa֑hu vatּa֧shshab neֽpeshsh-hayּe֛led 'al-qirebּ֖o vayּeֽchiy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD heard Elijah’s cry, and the boy’s life returned to him, and he lived.

וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע יְהוָ֖ה בְּק֣וֹל אֵלִיָּ֑הוּ וַתָּ֧שָׁב נֶֽפֶשׁ־הַיֶּ֛לֶד עַל־קִרְבּ֖וֹ וַיֶּֽחִי׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֨ch 'eliyּa֜hu 'et-hayּe֗led vayּoride֤hu min-ha'aliyּah֙ habּa֔yetah vaֽyּitּene֖hu le'imּ֑o vayּo֨'mer֙ 'e֣liyּa֔hu re'i֖y cha֥y bּeneֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Elijah picked up the child and carried him down from the room into the house. He gave him to his mother and said, 'Look, your son is alive!'

וַיִּקַּ֨ח אֵלִיָּ֜הוּ אֶת־הַיֶּ֗לֶד וַיֹּרִדֵ֤הוּ מִן־הָעֲלִיָּה֙ הַבַּ֔יְתָה וַֽיִּתְּנֵ֖הוּ לְאִמּ֑וֹ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ רְאִ֖י חַ֥י בְּנֵֽךְ׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֤'mer haֽ'ishshּah֙ 'el-'e֣liyּa֔hu 'atּah֙ ze֣h yada֔'etּiy kּi֛y 'i֥yshsh 'elohi֖ym 'a֑tּah udebar-yehva֥h bּepi֖yka 'emeֽt׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the woman said to Elijah, 'Now I know that you are a man of God and that the word of the LORD from your mouth is the truth.'

וַתֹּ֤אמֶר הָֽאִשָּׁה֙ אֶל־אֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ עַתָּה֙ זֶ֣ה יָדַ֔עְתִּי כִּ֛י אִ֥ישׁ אֱלֹהִ֖ים אָ֑תָּה וּדְבַר־יְהוָ֥ה בְּפִ֖יךָ אֱמֶֽת׃פ
