Chapter 18
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehiy֙ yami֣ym rabּi֔ym udebar-yehva֗h hayah֙ 'el-'e֣liyּa֔hu bּashshּana֥h hashshּeliyshshi֖yt le'mo֑r le֚ke hera'e֣h 'el-'ache'a֔b ve'etּena֥h mata֖r 'al-pּene֥y ha'adamaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After a long time, in the third year, the word of the LORD came to Elijah: 'Go and present yourself to Ahab, and I will send rain on the land.'

וַיְהִי֙ יָמִ֣ים רַבִּ֔ים וּדְבַר־יְהוָ֗ה הָיָה֙ אֶל־אֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ בַּשָּׁנָ֥ה הַשְּׁלִישִׁ֖ית לֵאמֹ֑ר לֵ֚ךְ הֵרָאֵ֣ה אֶל־אַחְאָ֔ב וְאֶתְּנָ֥ה מָטָ֖ר עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הָאֲדָמָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֨leke֙ 'eֽliyּa֔hu lehera'֖ot 'el-'ache'a֑b vehara'a֖b chaza֥q bּeshshomerֽon׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Elijah went to present himself to Ahab. Now the famine was severe in Samaria,

וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ֙ אֵֽלִיָּ֔הוּ לְהֵרָא֖וֹת אֶל־אַחְאָ֑ב וְהָרָעָ֖ב חָזָ֥ק בְּשֹׁמְרֽוֹן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֣ 'ache'a֔b 'el-'obadeya֖hu 'ashshe֣r 'al-habּa֑yit ve'obadeya֗hu haya֥h yare֛ 'et-yehva֖h me'oֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and Ahab had summoned Obadiah, his palace administrator. (Obadiah was a devout believer in the LORD.

וַיִּקְרָ֣א אַחְאָ֔ב אֶל־עֹבַדְיָ֖הוּ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עַל־הַבָּ֑יִת וְעֹבַדְיָ֗הוּ הָיָ֥ה יָרֵ֛א אֶת־יְהוָ֖ה מְאֹֽד׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehiy֙ bּehakeri֣yt 'iyze֔bel 'e֖t nebiy'e֣y yehva֑h vayּiqּa֨ch 'obadeya֜hu me'a֣h nebi'i֗ym vaֽyּachebּiy'e֞m chamishshּi֥ym 'iyshsh֙ bּamּe'ara֔h vekilekּela֖m le֥chem vamaֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)While Jezebel was killing off the LORD’s prophets, Obadiah had taken a hundred prophets and hidden them in two caves, fifty in each, and had supplied them with food and water.)

וַיְהִי֙ בְּהַכְרִ֣ית אִיזֶ֔בֶל אֵ֖ת נְבִיאֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיִּקַּ֨ח עֹבַדְיָ֜הוּ מֵאָ֣ה נְבִאִ֗ים וַֽיַּחְבִּיאֵ֞ם חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים אִישׁ֙ בַּמְּעָרָ֔ה וְכִלְכְּלָ֖ם לֶ֥חֶם וָמָֽיִם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'ache'ab֙ 'el-'o֣badeya֔hu le֤ke bּa'a֨retz֙ 'el-kּal-ma'eyene֣y hamּa֔yim ve'e֖l kּal-hanּechali֑ym 'ula֣y ׀ nimetza֣ chatzi֗yr unechayּeh֙ s֣us vape֔red vel֥o nakeri֖yt mehabּehemaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Ahab had said to Obadiah, 'Go through the land to all the springs and valleys. Maybe we can find some grass to keep the horses and mules alive so we will not have to kill any of our animals.'

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אַחְאָב֙ אֶל־עֹ֣בַדְיָ֔הוּ לֵ֤ךְ בָּאָ֨רֶץ֙ אֶל־כָּל־מַעְיְנֵ֣י הַמַּ֔יִם וְאֶ֖ל כָּל־הַנְּחָלִ֑ים אוּלַ֣י ׀ נִמְצָ֣א חָצִ֗יר וּנְחַיֶּה֙ ס֣וּס וָפֶ֔רֶד וְל֥וֹא נַכְרִ֖ית מֵהַבְּהֵמָֽה׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyechalּeq֥u lahe֛m 'et-ha'a֖retz laֽ'abar-bּa֑hּ 'ache'a֞b hala֨ke bּede֤reke 'echad֙ lebadּ֔o ve'oֽbadeya֛hu hala֥ke bּedereke-'echa֖d lebadּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So they divided the land they were to cover, Ahab going in one direction and Obadiah in another.

וַֽיְחַלְּק֥וּ לָהֶ֛ם אֶת־הָאָ֖רֶץ לַֽעֲבָר־בָּ֑הּ אַחְאָ֞ב הָלַ֨ךְ בְּדֶ֤רֶךְ אֶחָד֙ לְבַדּ֔וֹ וְעֹֽבַדְיָ֛הוּ הָלַ֥ךְ בְּדֶרֶךְ־אֶחָ֖ד לְבַדּֽוֹ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֤y 'obadeya֨hu֙ bּadּe֔reke vehinּe֥h 'eliyּa֖hu liqera't֑o vayּakּire֨hu֙ vayּipּo֣l 'al-pּana֔yv vayּo֕'mer ha'atּa֥h ze֖h 'adoni֥y 'eliyּaֽhu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As Obadiah was on his way, Elijah met him. Obadiah recognised him, bowed down to the ground, and said, 'Is it really you, my lord Elijah?'

וַיְהִ֤י עֹבַדְיָ֨הוּ֙ בַּדֶּ֔רֶךְ וְהִנֵּ֥ה אֵלִיָּ֖הוּ לִקְרָאת֑וֹ וַיַּכִּרֵ֨הוּ֙ וַיִּפֹּ֣ל עַל־פָּנָ֔יו וַיֹּ֕אמֶר הַאַתָּ֥ה זֶ֖ה אֲדֹנִ֥י אֵלִיָּֽהוּ׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer l֖o 'a֑niy le֛ke 'emo֥r la'done֖yka hinּe֥h 'eliyּaֽhu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Yes,' he replied. 'Go tell your master, "Elijah is here."'

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר ל֖וֹ אָ֑נִי לֵ֛ךְ אֱמֹ֥ר לַאדֹנֶ֖יךָ הִנֵּ֥ה אֵלִיָּֽהוּ׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֖'mer me֣h chata֑'tiy kּiֽy-'atּa֞h note֧n 'eֽt-'abedּeka֛ bּeyad-'ache'a֖b lahamiyteֽniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'What have I done wrong,' asked Obadiah, 'that you are handing your servant over to Ahab to be put to death?'

וַיֹּ֖אמֶר מֶ֣ה חָטָ֑אתִי כִּֽי־אַתָּ֞ה נֹתֵ֧ן אֶֽת־עַבְדְּךָ֛ בְּיַד־אַחְאָ֖ב לַהֲמִיתֵֽנִי׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): cha֣y ׀ yehva֣h 'elohe֗yka 'im-yeshsh-gּ֤oy umamelakah֙ 'a֠shsher loֽ'-shshala֨ch 'adoni֥y shsham֙ lebaqּeshsheka֔ ve'amer֖u 'a֑yin vehishshebּi֤y'a 'et-hamּamelakah֙ ve'et-hagּ֔oy kּi֖y lo֥ yimetza'eֽkּah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'As surely as the LORD your God lives, there is not a nation or kingdom where my master has not sent someone to look for you. And whenever a nation or kingdom said you were not there, he made them swear they could not find you.'

חַ֣י ׀ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ אִם־יֶשׁ־גּ֤וֹי וּמַמְלָכָה֙ אֲ֠שֶׁר לֹֽא־שָׁלַ֨ח אֲדֹנִ֥י שָׁם֙ לְבַקֶּשְׁךָ֔ וְאָמְר֖וּ אָ֑יִן וְהִשְׁבִּ֤יעַ אֶת־הַמַּמְלָכָה֙ וְאֶת־הַגּ֔וֹי כִּ֖י לֹ֥א יִמְצָאֶֽכָּה׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֖h 'atּa֣h 'ome֑r le֛ke 'emo֥r la'done֖yka hinּe֥h 'eliyּaֽhu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'But now you tell me to go to my master and say, "Elijah is here."'

וְעַתָּ֖ה אַתָּ֣ה אֹמֵ֑ר לֵ֛ךְ אֱמֹ֥ר לַאדֹנֶ֖יךָ הִנֵּ֥ה אֵלִיָּֽהוּ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֞h 'ani֣y ׀ 'ele֣ke me'itּa֗ke ver֨ucha yehva֤h ׀ yiֽshsּa'aka֙ 'a֚l 'ashshe֣r loֽ'-'eda֔ uba֨'tiy lehagּi֧yd le'ache'a֛b velo֥ yiֽmetza'aka֖ vaharaga֑niy ve'abedּeka֛ yare֥ 'et-yehva֖h minּe'uraֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'I don’t know where the Spirit of the LORD may carry you when I leave you. If I go and tell Ahab and he doesn’t find you, he will kill me. Yet I your servant have worshipped the LORD since my youth.'

וְהָיָ֞ה אֲנִ֣י ׀ אֵלֵ֣ךְ מֵאִתָּ֗ךְ וְר֨וּחַ יְהוָ֤ה ׀ יִֽשָּׂאֲךָ֙ עַ֚ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר לֹֽא־אֵדָ֔ע וּבָ֨אתִי לְהַגִּ֧יד לְאַחְאָ֛ב וְלֹ֥א יִֽמְצָאֲךָ֖ וַהֲרָגָ֑נִי וְעַבְדְּךָ֛ יָרֵ֥א אֶת־יְהוָ֖ה מִנְּעֻרָֽי׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): haloֽ'-hugּa֤d laֽ'doniy֙ 'e֣t 'ashsher-'ashsi֔ytiy bּaharo֣g 'iyze֔bel 'e֖t nebiy'e֣y yehva֑h va'achebּi'֩ minּebiy'e֨y yehva֜h me֣'ah 'i֗yshsh chamishshּi֨ym chamishshּi֥ym 'iyshsh֙ bּamּe'ara֔h va'akalekּele֖m le֥chem vamaֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Haven’t you heard, my lord, what I did while Jezebel was killing the prophets of the LORD? I hid a hundred of the LORD’s prophets in two caves, fifty in each, and supplied them with food and water.'

הֲלֹֽא־הֻגַּ֤ד לַֽאדֹנִי֙ אֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁר־עָשִׂ֔יתִי בַּהֲרֹ֣ג אִיזֶ֔בֶל אֵ֖ת נְבִיאֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וָאַחְבִּא֩ מִנְּבִיאֵ֨י יְהוָ֜ה מֵ֣אָה אִ֗ישׁ חֲמִשִּׁ֨ים חֲמִשִּׁ֥ים אִישׁ֙ בַּמְּעָרָ֔ה וָאֲכַלְכְּלֵ֖ם לֶ֥חֶם וָמָֽיִם׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּah֙ 'atּa֣h 'ome֔r le֛ke 'emo֥r laֽ'done֖yka hinּe֣h 'eliyּa֑hu vaharagaֽniy׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)'And now you tell me to go to my master and say, "Elijah is here." He will kill me!'

וְעַתָּה֙ אַתָּ֣ה אֹמֵ֔ר לֵ֛ךְ אֱמֹ֥ר לַֽאדֹנֶ֖יךָ הִנֵּ֣ה אֵלִיָּ֑הוּ וַהֲרָגָֽנִי׃ס

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer֙ 'eֽliyּa֔hu cha֚y yehva֣h tzeba'֔ot 'ashshe֥r 'ama֖detּiy lepana֑yv kּi֥y hayּ֖om 'era'e֥h 'elaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Elijah said, 'As the LORD Almighty lives, whom I serve, I will surely present myself to Ahab today.'

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֵֽלִיָּ֔הוּ חַ֚י יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָמַ֖דְתִּי לְפָנָ֑יו כִּ֥י הַיּ֖וֹם אֵרָאֶ֥ה אֵלָֽיו׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֧leke 'obadeya֛hu liqera֥'t 'ache'a֖b vayּagּed-l֑o vayּe֥leke 'ache'a֖b liqera֥'t 'eliyּaֽhu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Obadiah went to meet Ahab and told him, and Ahab went to meet Elijah.

וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ עֹבַדְיָ֛הוּ לִקְרַ֥את אַחְאָ֖ב וַיַּגֶּד־ל֑וֹ וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ אַחְאָ֖ב לִקְרַ֥את אֵלִיָּֽהוּ׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֛y kּire'֥ot 'ache'a֖b 'et-'eliyּa֑hu vayּo֤'mer 'ache'ab֙ 'ela֔yv ha'atּa֥h ze֖h 'oke֥r yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When he saw Elijah, he said to him, 'Is that you, you troubler of Israel?'

וַיְהִ֛י כִּרְא֥וֹת אַחְאָ֖ב אֶת־אֵלִיָּ֑הוּ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אַחְאָב֙ אֵלָ֔יו הַאַתָּ֥ה זֶ֖ה עֹכֵ֥ר יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֗'mer lo֤ 'aka֨retּiy֙ 'et-yishsera'e֔l kּi֥y 'im-'atּa֖h ube֣yt 'abi֑yka bּֽa'azabekem֙ 'et-mitzevo֣t yehva֔h vatּe֖leke 'achare֥y habּe'aliֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'I have not made trouble for Israel,' Elijah replied. 'But you and your father’s family have. You have abandoned the LORD’s commands and have followed the Baals.'

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר לֹ֤א עָכַ֨רְתִּי֙ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כִּ֥י אִם־אַתָּ֖ה וּבֵ֣ית אָבִ֑יךָ בַּֽעֲזָבְכֶם֙ אֶת־מִצְוֺ֣ת יְהוָ֔ה וַתֵּ֖לֶךְ אַחֲרֵ֥י הַבְּעָלִֽים׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֗h shshela֨ch qebo֥tz 'ela֛y 'et-kּal-yishsera'e֖l 'el-ha֣r hakּareme֑l ve'et-nebiy'e֨y habּa֜'al 'arebּa֧ me'֣ot vachamishshּi֗ym unebiy'e֤y haֽ'ashsherah֙ 'arebּa֣ me'֔ot 'okele֖y shshulecha֥n 'iyzaֽbel׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Now summon the people from all over Israel to meet me on Mount Carmel. And bring the four hundred and fifty prophets of Baal [1] and the four hundred prophets of Asherah [2], who eat at Jezebel’s table.'

וְעַתָּ֗ה שְׁלַ֨ח קְבֹ֥ץ אֵלַ֛י אֶת־כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אֶל־הַ֣ר הַכַּרְמֶ֑ל וְאֶת־נְבִיאֵ֨י הַבַּ֜עַל אַרְבַּ֧ע מֵא֣וֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁ֗ים וּנְבִיאֵ֤י הָֽאֲשֵׁרָה֙ אַרְבַּ֣ע מֵא֔וֹת אֹכְלֵ֖י שֻׁלְחַ֥ן אִיזָֽבֶל׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֥ch 'ache'a֖b bּekal-bּene֣y yishsera'e֑l vayּiqebּo֥tz 'et-hanּebiy'i֖ym 'el-ha֥r hakּaremeֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Ahab sent word throughout all Israel and assembled the prophets on Mount Carmel.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח אַחְאָ֖ב בְּכָל־בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיִּקְבֹּ֥ץ אֶת־הַנְּבִיאִ֖ים אֶל־הַ֥ר הַכַּרְמֶֽל׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּigּa֨shsh 'eliyּa֜hu 'el-kּal-ha'a֗m vayּo֨'mer֙ 'ad-mata֞y 'atּe֣m pּosechiym֮ 'al-shshetּe֣y hasּe'ipּiym֒ 'im-yehva֤h haֽ'elohiym֙ lek֣u 'achara֔yv ve'im-habּa֖'al lek֣u 'achara֑yv veloֽ'-'an֥u ha'a֛m 'ot֖o dּabaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Elijah went before the people and said, 'How long will you waver between two opinions? If the LORD is God, follow him; but if Baal is God, follow him.' But the people said nothing.

וַיִּגַּ֨שׁ אֵלִיָּ֜הוּ אֶל־כָּל־הָעָ֗ם וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ עַד־מָתַ֞י אַתֶּ֣ם פֹּסְחִים֮ עַל־שְׁתֵּ֣י הַסְּעִפִּים֒ אִם־יְהוָ֤ה הָֽאֱלֹהִים֙ לְכ֣וּ אַחֲרָ֔יו וְאִם־הַבַּ֖עַל לְכ֣וּ אַחֲרָ֑יו וְלֹֽא־עָנ֥וּ הָעָ֛ם אֹת֖וֹ דָּבָֽר׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'eliyּa֨hu֙ 'el-ha'a֔m 'ani֞y nota֧retּiy nabi֛y layhva֖h lebadּi֑y unebiy'e֣y habּa֔'al 'arebּa'-me'֥ot vachamishshּi֖ym 'iֽyshsh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Elijah said to them, 'I am the only one of the LORD’s prophets left, but Baal has four hundred and fifty prophets.'

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלִיָּ֨הוּ֙ אֶל־הָעָ֔ם אֲנִ֞י נוֹתַ֧רְתִּי נָבִ֛יא לַיהוָ֖ה לְבַדִּ֑י וּנְבִיאֵ֣י הַבַּ֔עַל אַרְבַּע־מֵא֥וֹת וַחֲמִשִּׁ֖ים אִֽישׁ׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): veyitּenu-la֜nu shshena֣yim pּari֗ym veyibechar֣u lahem֩ hapּa֨r ha'echa֜d viֽynatּechu֗hu veyashsi֨ymu֙ 'al-ha֣'etzi֔ym ve'e֖shsh lo֣ yashsi֑ymu va'ani֞y 'e'eshse֣h ׀ 'et-hapּa֣r ha'echa֗d venaֽtatּiy֙ 'al-ha֣'etzi֔ym ve'e֖shsh lo֥ 'ashsiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Get two bulls for us. Let Baal’s prophets choose one for themselves, and let them cut it into pieces and put it on the wood but not set fire to it. I will prepare the other bull and put it on the wood but not set fire to it.'

וְיִתְּנוּ־לָ֜נוּ שְׁנַ֣יִם פָּרִ֗ים וְיִבְחֲר֣וּ לָהֶם֩ הַפָּ֨ר הָאֶחָ֜ד וִֽינַתְּחֻ֗הוּ וְיָשִׂ֨ימוּ֙ עַל־הָ֣עֵצִ֔ים וְאֵ֖שׁ לֹ֣א יָשִׂ֑ימוּ וַאֲנִ֞י אֶעֱשֶׂ֣ה ׀ אֶת־הַפָּ֣ר הָאֶחָ֗ד וְנָֽתַתִּי֙ עַל־הָ֣עֵצִ֔ים וְאֵ֖שׁ לֹ֥א אָשִֽׂים׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): uqera'te֞m bּeshshe֣m 'eloֽheyke֗m vֽa'aniy֙ 'eqera֣ beshshem-yehva֔h vehaya֧h ha'elohi֛ym 'ashsher-ya'ane֥h ba'e֖shsh h֣u ha'elohi֑ym vayּa֧'an kּal-ha'a֛m vayּo'mer֖u t֥ob hadּabaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Then you call on the name of your god, and I will call on the Name of the LORD. The god who answers by fire, he is God.' Then all the people said, 'What you say is good.'

וּקְרָאתֶ֞ם בְּשֵׁ֣ם אֱלֹֽהֵיכֶ֗ם וַֽאֲנִי֙ אֶקְרָ֣א בְשֵׁם־יְהוָ֔ה וְהָיָ֧ה הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים אֲשֶׁר־יַעֲנֶ֥ה בָאֵ֖שׁ ה֣וּא הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וַיַּ֧עַן כָּל־הָעָ֛ם וַיֹּאמְר֖וּ ט֥וֹב הַדָּבָֽר׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer 'eliyּa֜hu linebiy'e֣y habּa֗'al bּachar֨u lake֜m hapּa֤r haֽ'echad֙ va'ashs֣u ri'shshona֔h kּi֥y 'atּe֖m harabּi֑ym veqire'u֙ bּeshshe֣m 'eloheyke֔m ve'e֖shsh lo֥ tashsiֽymu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Elijah said to the prophets of Baal, 'Choose one of the bulls and prepare it first, since there are so many of you. Call on the name of your god, but do not light the fire.'

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלִיָּ֜הוּ לִנְבִיאֵ֣י הַבַּ֗עַל בַּחֲר֨וּ לָכֶ֜ם הַפָּ֤ר הָֽאֶחָד֙ וַעֲשׂ֣וּ רִאשֹׁנָ֔ה כִּ֥י אַתֶּ֖ם הָרַבִּ֑ים וְקִרְאוּ֙ בְּשֵׁ֣ם אֱלֹהֵיכֶ֔ם וְאֵ֖שׁ לֹ֥א תָשִֽׂימוּ׃

26

Edified Edition (EDE)So they took the bull given them and prepared it. Then they called on the name of Baal from morning till noon. 'Baal, answer us!' they shouted. But there was no response; no one answered. And they danced around the altar they had made.

וַ֠יִּקְחוּ אֶת־הַפָּ֨ר אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֣ן לָהֶם֮ וַֽיַּעֲשׂוּ֒ וַיִּקְרְא֣וּ בְשֵׁם־הַ֠בַּעַל מֵהַבֹּ֨קֶר וְעַד־הַצָּהֳרַ֤יִם לֵאמֹר֙ הַבַּ֣עַל עֲנֵ֔נוּ וְאֵ֥ין ק֖וֹל וְאֵ֣ין עֹנֶ֑ה וַֽיְפַסְּח֔וּ עַל־הַמִּזְבֵּ֖חַ אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשָֽׂה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֨y baֽtzּahora֜yim vayehatּe֧l bּahe֣m 'eliyּa֗hu vayּo֨'mer֙ qire'֤u beqol-gּadol֙ kּiֽy-'elohi֣ym h֔u kּi֣y shsi֧ycha vekiֽy-shsi֛yg l֖o vekiֽy-de֣reke l֑o 'ula֛y yashshe֥n h֖u veyiqaֽtz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)At noon Elijah began to taunt them. 'Shout louder!' he said. 'Surely he is a god! Perhaps he is deep in thought, or busy, or travelling. Maybe he is sleeping and must be awakened.'

וַיְהִ֨י בַֽצָּהֳרַ֜יִם וַיְהַתֵּ֧ל בָּהֶ֣ם אֵלִיָּ֗הוּ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ קִרְא֤וּ בְקוֹל־גָּדוֹל֙ כִּֽי־אֱלֹהִ֣ים ה֔וּא כִּ֣י שִׂ֧יחַ וְכִֽי־שִׂ֛יג ל֖וֹ וְכִֽי־דֶ֣רֶךְ ל֑וֹ אוּלַ֛י יָשֵׁ֥ן ה֖וּא וְיִקָֽץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּiqere'u֙ bּeq֣ol gּad֔ol vayּitegּoֽdedu֙ kּemishshepּata֔m bּacharab֖ot ubaֽremachi֑ym 'ad-shshepake-dּa֖m 'aleyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So they shouted louder and slashed themselves with swords and spears, as was their custom, until their blood flowed.

וַֽיִּקְרְאוּ֙ בְּק֣וֹל גָּד֔וֹל וַיִּתְגֹּֽדְדוּ֙ כְּמִשְׁפָּטָ֔ם בַּחֲרָב֖וֹת וּבָֽרְמָחִ֑ים עַד־שְׁפָךְ־דָּ֖ם עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyehiy֙ kּa'abo֣r haֽtzּahora֔yim vayּiֽtenabּe'֔u 'a֖d la'al֣ot hamּinecha֑h ve'eֽyn-q֥ol ve'eyn-'one֖h ve'e֥yn qaֽshsheb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Midday passed, and they continued their frantic prophesying until the time for the evening sacrifice. But there was no response, no one answered, no one paid attention.

וַֽיְהִי֙ כַּעֲבֹ֣ר הַֽצָּהֳרַ֔יִם וַיִּֽתְנַבְּא֔וּ עַ֖ד לַעֲל֣וֹת הַמִּנְחָ֑ה וְאֵֽין־ק֥וֹל וְאֵין־עֹנֶ֖ה וְאֵ֥ין קָֽשֶׁב׃

30
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer 'eliyּa֤hu lekal-ha'am֙ gּeshsh֣u 'ela֔y vayּigּeshsh֥u kal-ha'a֖m 'ela֑yv vayerapּe֛ 'et-mizebּa֥ch yehva֖h heharֽus׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Elijah said to all the people, 'Come here to me.' They came to him, and he repaired the altar of the LORD, which had been torn down.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלִיָּ֤הוּ לְכָל־הָעָם֙ גְּשׁ֣וּ אֵלַ֔י וַיִּגְּשׁ֥וּ כָל־הָעָ֖ם אֵלָ֑יו וַיְרַפֵּ֛א אֶת־מִזְבַּ֥ח יְהוָ֖ה הֶהָרֽוּס׃

31
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֣ch 'eliyּa֗hu shshetּe֤ym 'eshsereh֙ 'abani֔ym kּemisepּa֖r shshibete֣y beneֽy-ya'aqo֑b 'ashsher֩ haya֨h debar-yehva֤h 'elayv֙ le'mo֔r yishsera'e֖l yiheye֥h shshemeֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Elijah took twelve stones, one for each of the tribes descended from Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come, saying, 'Your name shall be Israel.'

וַיִּקַּ֣ח אֵלִיָּ֗הוּ שְׁתֵּ֤ים עֶשְׂרֵה֙ אֲבָנִ֔ים כְּמִסְפַּ֖ר שִׁבְטֵ֣י בְנֵֽי־יַעֲקֹ֑ב אֲשֶׁר֩ הָיָ֨ה דְבַר־יְהוָ֤ה אֵלָיו֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל יִהְיֶ֥ה שְׁמֶֽךָ׃

32
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּibene֧h 'et-ha'abani֛ym mizebּe֖cha bּeshshe֣m yehva֑h vayּa֣'ashs tּe'ala֗h kּebeyt֙ sa'ta֣yim ze֔ra sabi֖yb lamּizebּeֽcha׃
Edified Edition (EDE)With the stones he built an altar in the Name of the LORD, and he dug a trench around it large enough to hold two seahs of seed.

וַיִּבְנֶ֧ה אֶת־הָאֲבָנִ֛ים מִזְבֵּ֖חַ בְּשֵׁ֣ם יְהוָ֑ה וַיַּ֣עַשׂ תְּעָלָ֗ה כְּבֵית֙ סָאתַ֣יִם זֶ֔רַע סָבִ֖יב לַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃

33
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּa'aro֖ke 'et-haֽ'etzi֑ym vayenatּach֙ 'et-hapּa֔r vayּa֖shsem 'al-ha'etziֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He arranged the wood, cut the bull into pieces and laid it on the wood. Then he said to them, 'Fill four large jars with water and pour it on the offering and on the wood.'

וַֽיַּעֲרֹ֖ךְ אֶת־הָֽעֵצִ֑ים וַיְנַתַּח֙ אֶת־הַפָּ֔ר וַיָּ֖שֶׂם עַל־הָעֵצִֽים׃

34
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֗'mer mile'֨u 'arebּa'a֤h kadּiym֙ ma֔yim veyiֽtzeq֥u 'al-ha'ola֖h ve'al-ha'etzi֑ym vayּo֤'mer shshenu֙ vayּishshen֔u vayּo֥'mer shshalּe֖shshu vayeshshalּeֽshshu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Do it again,' he said, and they did it again. 'Do it a third time,' he ordered, and they did it a third time.

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר מִלְא֨וּ אַרְבָּעָ֤ה כַדִּים֙ מַ֔יִם וְיִֽצְק֥וּ עַל־הָעֹלָ֖ה וְעַל־הָעֵצִ֑ים וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שְׁנוּ֙ וַיִּשְׁנ֔וּ וַיֹּ֥אמֶר שַׁלֵּ֖שׁוּ וַיְשַׁלֵּֽשׁוּ׃

35
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּelek֣u hamּa֔yim sabi֖yb lamּizebּe֑cha vega֥m 'et-hatּe'ala֖h milּe'-maֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The water ran down around the altar and even filled the trench.

וַיֵּלְכ֣וּ הַמַּ֔יִם סָבִ֖יב לַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ וְגַ֥ם אֶת־הַתְּעָלָ֖ה מִלֵּא־מָֽיִם׃

36
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y ׀ bּa'al֣ot hamּinecha֗h vayּigּa֞shsh 'eliyּa֣hu hanּabiy'֮ vayּo'mar֒ yehva֗h 'elohey֙ 'aberaham֙ yitzecha֣q veyishsera'e֔l hayּ֣om yiuada֗ kּiֽy-'atּa֧h 'elohi֛ym bּeyishsera'e֖l va'ani֣y 'abedּe֑ka vbdbryk ubidebareka֣ 'ashsi֔ytiy 'e֥t kּal-hadּebari֖ym ha'eֽlּeh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)At the time of sacrifice, the prophet Elijah stepped forward and prayed: 'LORD, the God of Abraham, Isaac and Israel, let it be known today that you are God in Israel and that I am your servant and have done all these things at your command.'

וַיְהִ֣י ׀ בַּעֲל֣וֹת הַמִּנְחָ֗ה וַיִּגַּ֞שׁ אֵלִיָּ֣הוּ הַנָּבִיא֮ וַיֹּאמַר֒ יְהוָ֗ה אֱלֹהֵי֙ אַבְרָהָם֙ יִצְחָ֣ק וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הַיּ֣וֹם יִוָּדַ֗ע כִּֽי־אַתָּ֧ה אֱלֹהִ֛ים בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וַאֲנִ֣י עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ ובדבריך וּבִדְבָרְךָ֣ עָשִׂ֔יתִי אֵ֥ת כָּל־הַדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵֽלֶּה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ane֤niy yehvah֙ 'ane֔niy veyeֽde'u֙ ha'a֣m hazּe֔h kּiֽy-'atּa֥h yehva֖h ha'elohi֑ym ve'atּa֛h hasibּo֥ta 'et-libּa֖m 'achoranּiֽyt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Answer me, LORD, answer me, so these people will know that you, LORD, are God, and that you are turning their hearts back again.'

עֲנֵ֤נִי יְהוָה֙ עֲנֵ֔נִי וְיֵֽדְעוּ֙ הָעָ֣ם הַזֶּ֔ה כִּֽי־אַתָּ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים וְאַתָּ֛ה הֲסִבֹּ֥תָ אֶת־לִבָּ֖ם אֲחֹרַנִּֽית׃

38
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּipּo֣l 'eshsh-yehva֗h vatּo֤'kal 'et-haֽ'olah֙ ve'et-ha֣'etzi֔ym ve'et-ha'abani֖ym ve'et-he'apa֑r ve'et-hamּa֥yim 'ashsher-bּatּe'ala֖h licheֽkah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the fire of the LORD fell and burned up the sacrifice, the wood, the stones and the soil, and also licked up the water in the trench.

וַתִּפֹּ֣ל אֵשׁ־יְהוָ֗ה וַתֹּ֤אכַל אֶת־הָֽעֹלָה֙ וְאֶת־הָ֣עֵצִ֔ים וְאֶת־הָאֲבָנִ֖ים וְאֶת־הֶעָפָ֑ר וְאֶת־הַמַּ֥יִם אֲשֶׁר־בַּתְּעָלָ֖ה לִחֵֽכָה׃

39
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּare'֙ kּal-ha'a֔m vaֽyּipּel֖u 'al-pּeneyhe֑m vayּo֣'mer֔u yehvah֙ h֣u ha'elohi֔ym yehva֖h h֥u ha'elohiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When all the people saw this, they fell prostrate and cried, 'The LORD, he is God! The LORD, he is God!'

וַיַּרְא֙ כָּל־הָעָ֔ם וַֽיִּפְּל֖וּ עַל־פְּנֵיהֶ֑ם וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ יְהוָה֙ ה֣וּא הָאֱלֹהִ֔ים יְהוָ֖ה ה֥וּא הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃

40
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֩ 'eliyּa֨hu lahe֜m tּipeshs֣u ׀ 'et-nebiy'e֣y habּa֗'al 'i֛yshsh 'al-yimּale֥t mehe֖m vaֽyּitepּeshs֑um vayּoride֤m 'eliyּa֨hu֙ 'el-na֣chal qiyshsh֔on vayּishshechate֖m shshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Elijah commanded them, 'Seize the prophets of Baal. Don’t let anyone get away!' They seized them, and Elijah had them brought down to the Kishon Valley [3] and slaughtered there.

וַיֹּאמֶר֩ אֵלִיָּ֨הוּ לָהֶ֜ם תִּפְשׂ֣וּ ׀ אֶת־נְבִיאֵ֣י הַבַּ֗עַל אִ֛ישׁ אַל־יִמָּלֵ֥ט מֵהֶ֖ם וַֽיִּתְפְּשׂ֑וּם וַיּוֹרִדֵ֤ם אֵלִיָּ֨הוּ֙ אֶל־נַ֣חַל קִישׁ֔וֹן וַיִּשְׁחָטֵ֖ם שָֽׁם׃

41
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'eliyּa֨hu֙ le'ache'a֔b 'ale֖h 'eko֣l ushshete֑h kּiy-q֖ol ham֥on hagּaֽshshem׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And Elijah said to Ahab, 'Go, eat and drink, for there is the sound of a heavy rain.'

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלִיָּ֨הוּ֙ לְאַחְאָ֔ב עֲלֵ֖ה אֱכֹ֣ל וּשְׁתֵ֑ה כִּי־ק֖וֹל הֲמ֥וֹן הַגָּֽשֶׁם׃

42
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'ale֥h 'ache'a֖b le'eko֣l velishshetּ֑ot ve'e֨liyּa֜hu 'ala֨h 'el-ro֤'shsh hakּaremel֙ vayּigeha֣r 'a֔retzah vayּa֥shsem pּana֖yv bּe֥yn brkv bּirekּaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Ahab went off to eat and drink, but Elijah climbed to the top of Carmel, bent down to the ground and put his face between his knees.

וַיַּעֲלֶ֥ה אַחְאָ֖ב לֶאֱכֹ֣ל וְלִשְׁתּ֑וֹת וְאֵ֨לִיָּ֜הוּ עָלָ֨ה אֶל־רֹ֤אשׁ הַכַּרְמֶל֙ וַיִּגְהַ֣ר אַ֔רְצָה וַיָּ֥שֶׂם פָּנָ֖יו בֵּ֥ין ברכו בִּרְכָּֽיו׃

43
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'eֽl-na'ar֗o 'aleֽh-na'֙ habּe֣t dּeֽreke-ya֔m vayּa֨'al֙ vayּabּe֔t vayּo֖'mer 'e֣yn me'֑umah vayּo֕'mer shshu֖b shshe֥ba pּe'amiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Go and look toward the sea,' he told his servant. And he went up and looked. 'There is nothing there,' he said. Seven times Elijah said, 'Go back.'

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶֽל־נַעֲר֗וֹ עֲלֵֽה־נָא֙ הַבֵּ֣ט דֶּֽרֶךְ־יָ֔ם וַיַּ֨עַל֙ וַיַּבֵּ֔ט וַיֹּ֖אמֶר אֵ֣ין מְא֑וּמָה וַיֹּ֕אמֶר שֻׁ֖ב שֶׁ֥בַע פְּעָמִֽים׃

44
Phonetic (Hebrew): vֽayehiy֙ bּashshּebi'i֔yt vayּo֗'mer hinּeh-'a֛b qetanּa֥h kּekap-'i֖yshsh 'ola֣h miyּa֑m vayּo֗'mer 'ale֨h 'emo֤r 'el-'ache'ab֙ 'eso֣r vare֔d velo֥ ya'atzareka֖h hagּaֽshshem׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The seventh time the servant reported, 'A cloud as small as a man’s hand is rising from the sea.' So Elijah said, 'Go and tell Ahab, "Harness your chariot and go down before the rain stops you."'

וַֽיְהִי֙ בַּשְּׁבִעִ֔ית וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הִנֵּה־עָ֛ב קְטַנָּ֥ה כְּכַף־אִ֖ישׁ עֹלָ֣ה מִיָּ֑ם וַיֹּ֗אמֶר עֲלֵ֨ה אֱמֹ֤ר אֶל־אַחְאָב֙ אֱסֹ֣ר וָרֵ֔ד וְלֹ֥א יַעַצָרְכָ֖ה הַגָּֽשֶׁם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y ׀ 'ad-kּo֣h ve'ad-kּo֗h vehashshּama֨yim֙ hiֽteqadּeru֙ 'abi֣ym ver֔ucha vayehi֖y gּe֣shshem gּad֑ol vayּirekּa֥b 'ache'a֖b vayּe֥leke yizere'eֽ'lah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Meanwhile, the sky grew black with clouds, the wind rose, a heavy rain came on and Ahab rode off to Jezreel.

וַיְהִ֣י ׀ עַד־כֹּ֣ה וְעַד־כֹּ֗ה וְהַשָּׁמַ֨יִם֙ הִֽתְקַדְּרוּ֙ עָבִ֣ים וְר֔וּחַ וַיְהִ֖י גֶּ֣שֶׁם גָּד֑וֹל וַיִּרְכַּ֥ב אַחְאָ֖ב וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ יִזְרְעֶֽאלָה׃

46
Phonetic (Hebrew): veyad-yehva֗h haֽyetah֙ 'el-'e֣liyּa֔hu vayeshshanּe֖s matena֑yv vayּa֨ratz֙ lipene֣y 'ache'a֔b 'ad-bּo'aka֖h yizere'eֽ'lah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The power of the LORD came on Elijah and, tucking his cloak into his belt, he ran ahead of Ahab all the way to Jezreel.

וְיַד־יְהוָ֗ה הָֽיְתָה֙ אֶל־אֵ֣לִיָּ֔הוּ וַיְשַׁנֵּ֖ס מָתְנָ֑יו וַיָּ֨רָץ֙ לִפְנֵ֣י אַחְאָ֔ב עַד־בֹּאֲכָ֖ה יִזְרְעֶֽאלָה׃
