1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqereb֥u yemeֽy-davi֖d lam֑ut vayetza֛v 'et-shshelomo֥h ben֖o le'moֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When the time drew near for David to die, he gave a charge to Solomon his son.

וַיִּקְרְב֥וּ יְמֵֽי־דָוִ֖ד לָמ֑וּת וַיְצַ֛ו אֶת־שְׁלֹמֹ֥ה בְנ֖וֹ לֵאמֹֽר׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): anoki֣y hole֔ke bּede֖reke kּal-ha'a֑retz vechazaqetּa֖ vehayi֥ytaֽ le'iֽyshsh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'I am about to go the way of all the earth,' he said. 'So be strong, act like a man,'

אָנֹכִ֣י הֹלֵ֔ךְ בְּדֶ֖רֶךְ כָּל־הָאָ֑רֶץ וְחָזַקְתָּ֖ וְהָיִ֥יתָֽ לְאִֽישׁ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veshshamaretּa֞ 'et-mishsheme֣ret ׀ yehva֣h 'elohe֗yka lale֤ket bּiderakayv֙ lishshemo֨r chuqּota֤yv mitzevotayv֙ umishshepּata֣yv ve'edevota֔yv kּakּat֖ub bּetora֣t moshshe֑h lema֣'an tּashsekּi֗yl 'e֚t kּal-'ashshe֣r tּaֽ'ashse֔h ve'e֛t kּal-'ashshe֥r tּipene֖h shshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'and observe what the LORD your God requires: Walk in obedience to him, and keep his decrees and commands, his laws and regulations, as written in the Law of Moses. Do this so that you may prosper in all you do and wherever you go'

וְשָׁמַרְתָּ֞ אֶת־מִשְׁמֶ֣רֶת ׀ יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֶ֗יךָ לָלֶ֤כֶת בִּדְרָכָיו֙ לִשְׁמֹ֨ר חֻקֹּתָ֤יו מִצְוֺתָיו֙ וּמִשְׁפָּטָ֣יו וְעֵדְוֺתָ֔יו כַּכָּת֖וּב בְּתוֹרַ֣ת מֹשֶׁ֑ה לְמַ֣עַן תַּשְׂכִּ֗יל אֵ֚ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר תַּֽעֲשֶׂ֔ה וְאֵ֛ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר תִּפְנֶ֖ה שָֽׁם׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): lema'an֩ yaqi֨ym yehva֜h 'et-dּebar֗o 'ashshe֨r dּibּe֣r 'alay֮ le'mor֒ 'im-yishshemer֨u bane֜yka 'et-dּarekּa֗m lale֤ket lepanay֙ bּe'eme֔t bּekal-lebaba֖m ubekal-napeshsha֑m le'mo֕r loֽ'-yikּare֤t leka֙ 'i֔yshsh me'a֖l kּisּe֥ yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'and that the LORD may keep his promise to me: "If your descendants watch how they live, and if they walk faithfully before me with all their heart and soul, you will never fail to have a successor on the throne of Israel."'

לְמַעַן֩ יָקִ֨ים יְהוָ֜ה אֶת־דְּבָר֗וֹ אֲשֶׁ֨ר דִּבֶּ֣ר עָלַי֮ לֵאמֹר֒ אִם־יִשְׁמְר֨וּ בָנֶ֜יךָ אֶת־דַּרְכָּ֗ם לָלֶ֤כֶת לְפָנַי֙ בֶּאֱמֶ֔ת בְּכָל־לְבָבָ֖ם וּבְכָל־נַפְשָׁ֑ם לֵאמֹ֕ר לֹֽא־יִכָּרֵ֤ת לְךָ֙ אִ֔ישׁ מֵעַ֖ל כִּסֵּ֥א יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vega֣m 'atּa֣h yada֡'etּa 'et֩ 'ashsher-'a֨shsah li֜y yo'a֣b bּen-tzeruya֗h 'ashshe֣r 'ashsa֣h lishsheneֽy-shsare֣y tzibe'֣ot yi֠shsera'el le'abene֨r bּen-ne֜r vela'amashsa֤ ben-ye֨ter֙ vayּa֣harege֔m vayּa֥shsem dּemeֽy-milechama֖h bּeshshalo֑m vayּitּe֞n dּeme֣y milechama֗h bּachagoֽrato֙ 'ashshe֣r bּematena֔yv uֽbena'al֖o 'ashshe֥r bּeragelaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Now you yourself know what Joab son of Zeruiah did to me, what he did to the two commanders of Israel’s armies, Abner son of Ner and Amasa son of Jether. He killed them, shedding their blood in peacetime as if in battle, and with that blood he stained the belt around his waist and the sandals on his feet.'

וְגַ֣ם אַתָּ֣ה יָדַ֡עְתָּ אֵת֩ אֲשֶׁר־עָ֨שָׂה לִ֜י יוֹאָ֣ב בֶּן־צְרוּיָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָשָׂ֣ה לִשְׁנֵֽי־שָׂרֵ֣י צִבְא֣וֹת יִ֠שְׂרָאֵל לְאַבְנֵ֨ר בֶּן־נֵ֜ר וְלַעֲמָשָׂ֤א בֶן־יֶ֨תֶר֙ וַיַּ֣הַרְגֵ֔ם וַיָּ֥שֶׂם דְּמֵֽי־מִלְחָמָ֖ה בְּשָׁלֹ֑ם וַיִּתֵּ֞ן דְּמֵ֣י מִלְחָמָ֗ה בַּחֲגֹֽרָתוֹ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּמָתְנָ֔יו וּֽבְנַעֲל֖וֹ אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּרַגְלָֽיו׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'ashsi֖yta kּechakemate֑ka veloֽ'-tore֧d shseybat֛o bּeshshalo֖m shshe'oֽl׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)'Deal with him according to your wisdom, but do not let his grey head go down to the grave in peace.'

וְעָשִׂ֖יתָ כְּחָכְמָתֶ֑ךָ וְלֹֽא־תוֹרֵ֧ד שֵׂיבָת֛וֹ בְּשָׁלֹ֖ם שְׁאֹֽל׃ס

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): velibene֨y barezilּa֤y hagּile'adiy֙ tּaֽ'ashseh-che֔sed vehay֖u bּe'okele֣y shshulechane֑ka kּiy-ken֙ qareb֣u 'ela֔y bּebarechi֕y mipּene֖y 'abeshshal֥om 'achiֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'But show kindness to the sons of Barzillai of Gilead and let them be among those who eat at your table. They stood by me when I fled from your brother Absalom.'

וְלִבְנֵ֨י בַרְזִלַּ֤י הַגִּלְעָדִי֙ תַּֽעֲשֶׂה־חֶ֔סֶד וְהָי֖וּ בְּאֹכְלֵ֣י שֻׁלְחָנֶ֑ךָ כִּי־כֵן֙ קָרְב֣וּ אֵלַ֔י בְּבָרְחִ֕י מִפְּנֵ֖י אַבְשָׁל֥וֹם אָחִֽיךָ׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehinּe֣h 'i֠mּeka shshiֽme'i֨y ben-gּera֥ ben-hayemiyniy֮ mibּachuriym֒ veh֤u qiֽlela֨niy֙ qelala֣h nimere֔tzet bּey֖om leketּi֣y machana֑yim vehֽu'-yara֤d liqera'tiy֙ hayּaredּe֔n va'eshshּa֨baֽ l֤o baֽyhvah֙ le'mo֔r 'im-'amiֽyteka֖ bּechaֽreb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'And remember, you have with you Shimei son of Gera, the Benjamite from Bahurim, who called down bitter curses on me the day I went to Mahanaim. When he came down to meet me at the Jordan, I swore to him by the LORD: "I will not put you to death by the sword."'

וְהִנֵּ֣ה עִ֠מְּךָ שִֽׁמְעִ֨י בֶן־גֵּרָ֥א בֶן־הַיְמִינִי֮ מִבַּחֻרִים֒ וְה֤וּא קִֽלְלַ֨נִי֙ קְלָלָ֣ה נִמְרֶ֔צֶת בְּי֖וֹם לֶכְתִּ֣י מַחֲנָ֑יִם וְהֽוּא־יָרַ֤ד לִקְרָאתִי֙ הַיַּרְדֵּ֔ן וָאֶשָּׁ֨בַֽע ל֤וֹ בַֽיהוָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אִם־אֲמִֽיתְךָ֖ בֶּחָֽרֶב׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּah֙ 'al-tּenaqּe֔hu kּi֛y 'i֥yshsh chaka֖m 'a֑tּah veyaֽda'etּa֙ 'e֣t 'ashshe֣r tּaֽ'ashseh-lּ֔o vehoradetּa֧ 'et-shseybat֛o bּeda֖m shshe'ֽol׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'But now, do not consider him innocent. You are a man of wisdom; you will know what to do to him. Bring his grey head down to the grave in blood.'

וְעַתָּה֙ אַל־תְּנַקֵּ֔הוּ כִּ֛י אִ֥ישׁ חָכָ֖ם אָ֑תָּה וְיָֽדַעְתָּ֙ אֵ֣ת אֲשֶׁ֣ר תַּֽעֲשֶׂה־לּ֔וֹ וְהוֹרַדְתָּ֧ אֶת־שֵׂיבָת֛וֹ בְּדָ֖ם שְׁאֽוֹל׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshekּa֥b dּavi֖d 'im-'abota֑yv vayּiqּabe֖r bּe'i֥yr dּaviֽd׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Then David rested with his ancestors and was buried in the City of David.

וַיִּשְׁכַּ֥ב דָּוִ֖ד עִם־אֲבֹתָ֑יו וַיִּקָּבֵ֖ר בְּעִ֥יר דָּוִֽד׃פ

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehayּami֗ym 'ashshe֨r mala֤ke dּavid֙ 'al-yishsera'e֔l 'arebּa'i֖ym shshana֑h bּecheber֤on malake֙ shshe֣ba shshani֔ym ubiyrushshala֣im mala֔ke shsheloshshi֥ym veshshalo֖shsh shshaniֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He had reigned forty years over Israel, seven years in Hebron and thirty-three in Jerusalem.

וְהַיָּמִ֗ים אֲשֶׁ֨ר מָלַ֤ךְ דָּוִד֙ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אַרְבָּעִ֖ים שָׁנָ֑ה בְּחֶבְר֤וֹן מָלַךְ֙ שֶׁ֣בַע שָׁנִ֔ים וּבִירוּשָׁלִַ֣ם מָלַ֔ךְ שְׁלֹשִׁ֥ים וְשָׁלֹ֖שׁ שָׁנִֽים׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): ushshelomo֕h yashsha֕b 'al-kּisּe֖ dּavi֣d 'abi֑yv vatּikּo֥n malekut֖o me'oֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Solomon sat on the throne of his father David, and his rule was firmly established.

וּשְׁלֹמֹ֕ה יָשַׁ֕ב עַל־כִּסֵּ֖א דָּוִ֣ד אָבִ֑יו וַתִּכֹּ֥ן מַלְכֻת֖וֹ מְאֹֽד׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֞ 'adoniyּa֣hu ben-chagּe֗yt 'el-bּat-shshe֨ba'֙ 'em-shshelomo֔h vatּo֖'mer hashshal֣om bּo'e֑ka vayּo֖'mer shshalֽom׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Adonijah, the son of Haggith, went to Bathsheba, Solomon’s mother. Bathsheba asked him, 'Do you come peacefully?' He answered, 'Yes, peacefully.'

וַיָּבֹ֞א אֲדֹנִיָּ֣הוּ בֶן־חַגֵּ֗ית אֶל־בַּת־שֶׁ֨בַע֙ אֵם־שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה וַתֹּ֖אמֶר הֲשָׁל֣וֹם בֹּאֶ֑ךָ וַיֹּ֖אמֶר שָׁלֽוֹם׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֕'mer dּaba֥r li֖y 'ela֑yike vatּo֖'mer dּabּeֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then he added, 'I have something to say to you.' 'You may say it,' she replied.

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר דָּבָ֥ר לִ֖י אֵלָ֑יִךְ וַתֹּ֖אמֶר דַּבֵּֽר׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֗'mer 'a֤tּe yada֨'atּe֙ kּiy-liy֙ hayeta֣h hamּeluka֔h ve'ala֞y shsa֧mu kaֽl-yishsera'e֛l pּeneyhe֖m limelo֑ke vatּisּo֤b hamּelukah֙ vatּehi֣y le'achi֔y kּi֥y meyehva֖h ha֥yetah lּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'As you know,' he said, 'the kingdom was mine. All Israel looked to me as their king. But things changed, and the kingdom has gone to my brother; for it has come to him from the LORD.'

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר אַ֤תְּ יָדַ֨עַתְּ֙ כִּי־לִי֙ הָיְתָ֣ה הַמְּלוּכָ֔ה וְעָלַ֞י שָׂ֧מוּ כָֽל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל פְּנֵיהֶ֖ם לִמְלֹ֑ךְ וַתִּסֹּ֤ב הַמְּלוּכָה֙ וַתְּהִ֣י לְאָחִ֔י כִּ֥י מֵיְהוָ֖ה הָ֥יְתָה לּֽוֹ׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֗h shshe'ela֤h 'achat֙ 'aֽnokiy֙ shsho'e֣l meֽ'itּa֔ke 'al-tּashshi֖biy 'et-pּana֑y vatּo֥'mer 'ela֖yv dּabּeֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Now I have one request to make of you. Do not refuse me.' 'You may make it,' she said.

וְעַתָּ֗ה שְׁאֵלָ֤ה אַחַת֙ אָֽנֹכִי֙ שֹׁאֵ֣ל מֵֽאִתָּ֔ךְ אַל־תָּשִׁ֖בִי אֶת־פָּנָ֑י וַתֹּ֥אמֶר אֵלָ֖יו דַּבֵּֽר׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֗'mer 'imeriy-na'֙ lishshelomo֣h hamּe֔leke kּi֥y loֽ'-yashshi֖yb 'et-pּana֑yike veyitּen-li֛y 'et-'abiyshsha֥g hashshּunamּi֖yt le'ishshּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So he continued, 'Please ask King Solomon, he will not refuse you, to give me Abishag the Shunammite as my wife.'

וַיֹּ֗אמֶר אִמְרִי־נָא֙ לִשְׁלֹמֹ֣ה הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ כִּ֥י לֹֽא־יָשִׁ֖יב אֶת־פָּנָ֑יִךְ וְיִתֶּן־לִ֛י אֶת־אֲבִישַׁ֥ג הַשּׁוּנַמִּ֖ית לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֥'mer bּat-shshe֖ba t֑ob 'anoki֕y 'adabּe֥r 'ale֖yka 'el-hamּeֽleke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Very well,' Bathsheba replied, 'I will speak to the king for you.'

וַתֹּ֥אמֶר בַּת־שֶׁ֖בַע ט֑וֹב אָנֹכִ֕י אֲדַבֵּ֥ר עָלֶ֖יךָ אֶל־הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּabo֤ bat-shshe֨ba'֙ 'el-hamּe֣leke shshelomo֔h ledabּer-l֖o 'al-'adoniyּa֑hu vayּaqam֩ hamּe֨leke liqera'ta֜hּ vayּishshetּa֣chu la֗hּ vayּe֨shsheb֙ 'al-kּise'֔o vayּa֤shsem kּisּe'֙ le'e֣m hamּe֔leke vatּe֖shsheb liֽymiynֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Bathsheba went to King Solomon to speak to him for Adonijah, the king stood up to meet her, bowed down to her and sat down on his throne. He had a throne brought for the king’s mother, and she sat down at his right hand.

וַתָּבֹ֤א בַת־שֶׁ֨בַע֙ אֶל־הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה לְדַבֶּר־ל֖וֹ עַל־אֲדֹנִיָּ֑הוּ וַיָּקָם֩ הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ לִקְרָאתָ֜הּ וַיִּשְׁתַּ֣חוּ לָ֗הּ וַיֵּ֨שֶׁב֙ עַל־כִּסְא֔וֹ וַיָּ֤שֶׂם כִּסֵּא֙ לְאֵ֣ם הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ וַתֵּ֖שֶׁב לִֽימִינֽוֹ׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֗'mer shshe'ela֨h 'acha֤t qetanּah֙ 'aֽnokiy֙ shsho'e֣let meֽ'itּa֔ke 'al-tּa֖shsheb 'et-pּana֑y vayּoֽ'mer-la֤hּ hamּe֨leke֙ shsha'ali֣y 'imּi֔y kּi֥y loֽ'-'ashshi֖yb 'et-pּanaֽyike׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'I have one small request to make of you,' she said. 'Do not refuse me.' The king replied, 'Make it, my mother; I will not refuse you.'

וַתֹּ֗אמֶר שְׁאֵלָ֨ה אַחַ֤ת קְטַנָּה֙ אָֽנֹכִי֙ שֹׁאֶ֣לֶת מֵֽאִתָּ֔ךְ אַל־תָּ֖שֶׁב אֶת־פָּנָ֑י וַיֹּֽאמֶר־לָ֤הּ הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ שַׁאֲלִ֣י אִמִּ֔י כִּ֥י לֹֽא־אָשִׁ֖יב אֶת־פָּנָֽיִךְ׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֕'mer yutּa֖n 'et-'abiyshsha֣g hashshּunamּi֑yt la'adoniyּa֥hu 'achi֖yka le'ishshּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So she said, 'Let Abishag the Shunammite be given in marriage to your brother Adonijah.'

וַתֹּ֕אמֶר יֻתַּ֖ן אֶת־אֲבִישַׁ֣ג הַשֻּׁנַמִּ֑ית לַאֲדֹנִיָּ֥הוּ אָחִ֖יךָ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'an֩ hamּe֨leke shshelomo֜h vayּo֣'mer le'imּ֗o velamah֩ 'a֨tּe shsho'e֜let 'et-'abiyshsha֤g hashshּunamּiyt֙ la'ado֣niyּa֔hu veshshaֽ'aliy-lo֙ 'et-hamּeluka֔h kּi֛y h֥u 'achi֖y hagּad֣ol mimּe֑nּiy velo֙ ule'ebeyata֣r hakּohe֔n uleyo'a֖b bּen-tzeruyaֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)King Solomon answered his mother, 'Why do you request Abishag the Shunammite for Adonijah? You might as well request the kingdom for him, after all, he is my older brother, and for Abiathar the priest and Joab son of Zeruiah!'

וַיַּעַן֩ הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֜ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לְאִמּ֗וֹ וְלָמָה֩ אַ֨תְּ שֹׁאֶ֜לֶת אֶת־אֲבִישַׁ֤ג הַשֻּׁנַמִּית֙ לַאֲדֹ֣נִיָּ֔הוּ וְשַֽׁאֲלִי־לוֹ֙ אֶת־הַמְּלוּכָ֔ה כִּ֛י ה֥וּא אָחִ֖י הַגָּד֣וֹל מִמֶּ֑נִּי וְלוֹ֙ וּלְאֶבְיָתָ֣ר הַכֹּהֵ֔ן וּלְיוֹאָ֖ב בֶּן־צְרוּיָֽה׃פ

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshּaba'֙ hamּe֣leke shshelomo֔h bּaֽyhva֖h le'mo֑r kּo֣h yaֽ'ashseh-lּi֤y 'elohiym֙ veko֣h yosi֔yp kּi֣y benapeshsh֔o dּibּer֙ 'ado֣niyּa֔hu 'et-hadּaba֖r hazּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then King Solomon swore by the LORD: 'May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if Adonijah does not pay with his life for this request!'

וַיִּשָּׁבַע֙ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה בַּֽיהוָ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר כֹּ֣ה יַֽעֲשֶׂה־לִּ֤י אֱלֹהִים֙ וְכֹ֣ה יוֹסִ֔יף כִּ֣י בְנַפְשׁ֔וֹ דִּבֶּר֙ אֲדֹ֣נִיָּ֔הוּ אֶת־הַדָּבָ֖ר הַזֶּֽה׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֗h chay-yehvah֙ 'ashshe֣r hekiyna֗niy vyvshybyny vayּֽoshshiyba֨niy֙ 'al-kּisּe'֙ dּavi֣d 'abi֔y va'ashshe֧r 'aֽshsah-li֛y bּa֖yit kּa'ashshe֣r dּibּe֑r kּi֣y hayּ֔om yuma֖t 'adoniyּaֽhu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'And now, as surely as the LORD lives, he who has established me, set me on the throne of my father David and has founded a dynasty for me as he promised, Adonijah shall be put to death today!'

וְעַתָּ֗ה חַי־יְהוָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר הֱכִינַ֗נִי ויושיביני וַיּֽוֹשִׁיבַ֨נִי֙ עַל־כִּסֵּא֙ דָּוִ֣ד אָבִ֔י וַאֲשֶׁ֧ר עָֽשָׂה־לִ֛י בַּ֖יִת כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֵּ֑ר כִּ֣י הַיּ֔וֹם יוּמַ֖ת אֲדֹנִיָּֽהוּ׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshelach֙ hamּe֣leke shshelomo֔h bּeya֖d bּenaya֣hu ben-yehoyada֑ vayּipegּa'-bּ֖o vayּamoֽt׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)So King Solomon gave orders to Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and he struck down Adonijah and he died.

וַיִּשְׁלַח֙ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה בְּיַ֖ד בְּנָיָ֣הוּ בֶן־יְהוֹיָדָ֑ע וַיִּפְגַּע־בּ֖וֹ וַיָּמֹֽת׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ule'ebeyata֨r hakּohe֜n 'ama֣r hamּe֗leke 'anatot֙ le֣ke 'al-shsade֔yka kּi֛y 'i֥yshsh ma֖vet 'a֑tּah ubayּ֨om hazּe֜h lo֣ 'amiyte֗ka kּiֽy-nashsa֜'ta 'et-'ar֨on 'adona֤y yehovih֙ lipeney֙ dּavi֣d 'abi֔y veki֣y hite'anּi֔yta bּeko֥l 'ashsheֽr-hite'anּa֖h 'abiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)To Abiathar the priest the king said, 'Go back to your fields in Anathoth. You deserve to die, but I will not put you to death now, because you carried the Ark of the Sovereign LORD before my father David and shared all my father’s hardships.'

וּלְאֶבְיָתָ֨ר הַכֹּהֵ֜ן אָמַ֣ר הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ עֲנָתֹת֙ לֵ֣ךְ עַל־שָׂדֶ֔יךָ כִּ֛י אִ֥ישׁ מָ֖וֶת אָ֑תָּה וּבַיּ֨וֹם הַזֶּ֜ה לֹ֣א אֲמִיתֶ֗ךָ כִּֽי־נָשָׂ֜אתָ אֶת־אֲר֨וֹן אֲדֹנָ֤י יְהֹוִה֙ לִפְנֵי֙ דָּוִ֣ד אָבִ֔י וְכִ֣י הִתְעַנִּ֔יתָ בְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶֽׁר־הִתְעַנָּ֖ה אָבִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayega֤reshsh shshelomoh֙ 'et-'ebeyata֔r mihey֥ot kּohe֖n laֽyhva֑h lemalּe'֙ 'et-dּeba֣r yehva֔h 'ashshe֥r dּibּe֛r 'al-bּe֥yt 'eli֖y bּeshshiloֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)So Solomon removed Abiathar from the priesthood of the LORD, fulfilling the word the LORD had spoken at Shiloh about the house of Eli.

וַיְגָ֤רֶשׁ שְׁלֹמֹה֙ אֶת־אֶבְיָתָ֔ר מִהְי֥וֹת כֹּהֵ֖ן לַֽיהוָ֑ה לְמַלֵּא֙ אֶת־דְּבַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר דִּבֶּ֛ר עַל־בֵּ֥ית עֵלִ֖י בְּשִׁלֹֽה׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehashshּemu'ah֙ bּa֣'ah 'ad-yo'a֔b kּi֣y yo'a֗b natah֙ 'achare֣y 'adoniyּa֔h ve'achare֥y 'abeshshal֖om lo֣ nata֑h vayּa֤nas yo'ab֙ 'el-'o֣hel yehva֔h vֽayּachaze֖q bּeqaren֥ot hamּizebּeֽcha׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When the news reached Joab, who had conspired with Adonijah though not with Absalom, he fled to the tent of the LORD and took hold of the horns of the altar.

וְהַשְּׁמֻעָה֙ בָּ֣אָה עַד־יוֹאָ֔ב כִּ֣י יוֹאָ֗ב נָטָה֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י אֲדֹנִיָּ֔ה וְאַחֲרֵ֥י אַבְשָׁל֖וֹם לֹ֣א נָטָ֑ה וַיָּ֤נָס יוֹאָב֙ אֶל־אֹ֣הֶל יְהוָ֔ה וַֽיַּחֲזֵ֖ק בְּקַרְנ֥וֹת הַמִּזְבֵּֽחַ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּugּa֞d lamּe֣leke shshelomo֗h kּi֣y na֤s yo'ab֙ 'el-'o֣hel yehva֔h vehinּe֖h 'e֣tzel hamּizebּe֑cha vayּishshela֨ch shshelomo֜h 'et-bּenaya֧hu ben-yehoyada֛ le'mo֖r le֥ke pּega'-bּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)King Solomon was told that Joab had fled to the tent of the LORD and was beside the altar. Then Solomon ordered Benaiah son of Jehoiada, 'Go, strike him down!'

וַיֻּגַּ֞ד לַמֶּ֣לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֗ה כִּ֣י נָ֤ס יוֹאָב֙ אֶל־אֹ֣הֶל יְהוָ֔ה וְהִנֵּ֖ה אֵ֣צֶל הַמִּזְבֵּ֑חַ וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח שְׁלֹמֹ֜ה אֶת־בְּנָיָ֧הוּ בֶן־יְהוֹיָדָ֛ע לֵאמֹ֖ר לֵ֥ךְ פְּגַע־בּֽוֹ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֨ benaya֜hu 'el-'o֣hel yehva֗h vayּo֨'mer 'ela֜yv kּoֽh-'ama֤r hamּe֨leke֙ tze֔ vayּo֥'mer ׀ lo֖ kּi֣y po֣h 'am֑ut vayּa֨shsheb bּenaya֤hu 'et-hamּe֨leke֙ dּaba֣r le'mo֔r kּoֽh-dibּe֥r yo'a֖b veko֥h 'anaֽniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Benaiah entered the tent of the LORD and said to Joab, 'The king says, "Come out!"' But he answered, 'No, I will die here.' Benaiah reported to the king, 'This is how Joab answered me.'

וַיָּבֹ֨א בְנָיָ֜הוּ אֶל־אֹ֣הֶל יְהוָ֗ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֜יו כֹּֽה־אָמַ֤ר הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ צֵ֔א וַיֹּ֥אמֶר ׀ לֹ֖א כִּ֣י פֹ֣ה אָמ֑וּת וַיָּ֨שֶׁב בְּנָיָ֤הוּ אֶת־הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ דָּבָ֣ר לֵאמֹ֔ר כֹּֽה־דִבֶּ֥ר יוֹאָ֖ב וְכֹ֥ה עָנָֽנִי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֧'mer l֣o hamּe֗leke 'ashseh֙ kּa'ashshe֣r dּibּe֔r upega'-bּ֖o uqebaretּ֑o vahasiyro֣ta ׀ dּeme֣y chinּa֗m 'ashsher֙ shshapa֣ke yo'a֔b me'ala֕y ume'a֖l bּe֥yt 'abiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the king commanded Benaiah, 'Do as he says. Strike him down and bury him, and so clear me and my whole family of the guilt of the innocent blood that Joab shed.'

וַיֹּ֧אמֶר ל֣וֹ הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ עֲשֵׂה֙ כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר דִּבֶּ֔ר וּפְגַע־בּ֖וֹ וּקְבַרְתּ֑וֹ וַהֲסִירֹ֣תָ ׀ דְּמֵ֣י חִנָּ֗ם אֲשֶׁר֙ שָׁפַ֣ךְ יוֹאָ֔ב מֵעָלַ֕י וּמֵעַ֖ל בֵּ֥ית אָבִֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veheshshiyb֩ yehva֨h 'et-dּam֜o 'al-ro'shsh֗o 'ashshe֣r pּaga֣ bּishsheneֽy-'a֠nashshiym tzadּiqi֨ym vetobi֤ym mimּe֨nּu֙ vayּaharege֣m bּache֔reb ve'abi֥y davi֖d lo֣ yada֑ 'et-'abene֤r bּen-ner֙ shsar-tzeba֣ yishsera'e֔l ve'et-'amashsa֥ ben-ye֖ter shsar-tzeba֥ yehudaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'The LORD will repay him for the blood he shed, because without my father David’s knowledge he attacked two men and killed them with the sword. Both of them, Abner son of Ner, commander of Israel’s army, and Amasa son of Jether, commander of Judah’s army, were better men and more righteous than he.'

וְהֵשִׁיב֩ יְהוָ֨ה אֶת־דָּמ֜וֹ עַל־רֹאשׁ֗וֹ אֲשֶׁ֣ר פָּגַ֣ע בִּשְׁנֵֽי־אֲ֠נָשִׁים צַדִּקִ֨ים וְטֹבִ֤ים מִמֶּ֨נּוּ֙ וַיַּהַרְגֵ֣ם בַּחֶ֔רֶב וְאָבִ֥י דָוִ֖ד לֹ֣א יָדָ֑ע אֶת־אַבְנֵ֤ר בֶּן־נֵר֙ שַׂר־צְבָ֣א יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְאֶת־עֲמָשָׂ֥א בֶן־יֶ֖תֶר שַׂר־צְבָ֥א יְהוּדָֽה׃

33
Phonetic (Hebrew): veshsha֤bu demeyhem֙ bּero֣'shsh yo'a֔b ubero֥'shsh zare'֖o le'ola֑m uledavi֡d u֠lezare'o ulebeyt֨o ulekise'֜o yiheye֥h shshal֛om 'ad-'ola֖m me'i֥m yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'May the guilt of their blood rest on the head of Joab and his descendants forever. But on David and his descendants, his house and his throne, may there be the LORD’s peace forever.'

וְשָׁ֤בוּ דְמֵיהֶם֙ בְּרֹ֣אשׁ יוֹאָ֔ב וּבְרֹ֥אשׁ זַרְע֖וֹ לְעֹלָ֑ם וּלְדָוִ֡ד וּ֠לְזַרְעוֹ וּלְבֵית֨וֹ וּלְכִסְא֜וֹ יִהְיֶ֥ה שָׁל֛וֹם עַד־עוֹלָ֖ם מֵעִ֥ם יְהוָֽה׃

34
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֗'al bּenaya֨hu֙ bּen-yeh֣oyada֔ vayּipegּa'-bּ֖o vayemite֑hu vayּiqּabe֥r bּebeyt֖o bּamּidebּaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Benaiah son of Jehoiada went up and struck down Joab and killed him, and he was buried at his home in the wilderness.

וַיַּ֗עַל בְּנָיָ֨הוּ֙ בֶּן־יְה֣וֹיָדָ֔ע וַיִּפְגַּע־בּ֖וֹ וַיְמִתֵ֑הוּ וַיִּקָּבֵ֥ר בְּבֵית֖וֹ בַּמִּדְבָּֽר׃

35
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitּe֨n hamּe֜leke 'et-bּenaya֧hu ben-yehoyada֛ tּachetּa֖yv 'al-hatzּaba֑ ve'et-tzad֤oq hakּohen֙ nata֣n hamּe֔leke tּa֖chat 'ebeyataֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The king put Benaiah son of Jehoiada over the army in Joab’s position and replaced Abiathar with Zadok the priest.

וַיִּתֵּ֨ן הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ אֶת־בְּנָיָ֧הוּ בֶן־יְהוֹיָדָ֛ע תַּחְתָּ֖יו עַל־הַצָּבָ֑א וְאֶת־צָד֤וֹק הַכֹּהֵן֙ נָתַ֣ן הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ תַּ֖חַת אֶבְיָתָֽר׃

36
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֤ch hamּe֨leke֙ vayּiqera֣ leshshime'i֔y vayּo֣'mer l֗o bּeֽneh-leka֥ ba֨yit֙ bּiyr֣ushshalai֔m veyashshabetּa֖ shsha֑m veloֽ'-tetze֥ mishshּa֖m 'a֥neh va'aֽnah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the king sent for Shimei and said to him, 'Build yourself a house in Jerusalem and live there, but do not go anywhere else.'

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ וַיִּקְרָ֣א לְשִׁמְעִ֔י וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֗וֹ בְּֽנֵה־לְךָ֥ בַ֨יִת֙ בִּיר֣וּשָׁלִַ֔ם וְיָשַׁבְתָּ֖ שָׁ֑ם וְלֹֽא־תֵצֵ֥א מִשָּׁ֖ם אָ֥נֶה וָאָֽנָה׃

37
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֣h ׀ bּey֣om tze'teka֗ ve'aֽbaretּa֙ 'et-na֣chal qider֔on yado֥'a tּeda֖ kּi֣y m֣ot tּam֑ut dּameka֖ yiheye֥h bero'shsheֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'The day you leave and cross the Kidron Valley, you can be sure you will die; your blood will be on your own head.'

וְהָיָ֣ה ׀ בְּי֣וֹם צֵאתְךָ֗ וְעָֽבַרְתָּ֙ אֶת־נַ֣חַל קִדְר֔וֹן יָדֹ֥עַ תֵּדַ֖ע כִּ֣י מ֣וֹת תָּמ֑וּת דָּמְךָ֖ יִהְיֶ֥ה בְרֹאשֶֽׁךָ׃

38
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer shshime'i֤y lamּe֨leke֙ t֣ob hadּaba֔r kּa'ashshe֤r dּibּer֙ 'adoni֣y hamּe֔leke kּe֖n ya'ashse֣h 'abedּe֑ka vayּe֧shsheb shshime'i֛y bּiyrushshala֖im yami֥ym rabּiֽym׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Shimei answered the king, 'What you say is good. Your servant will do as my lord the king has said.' And Shimei stayed in Jerusalem for a long time.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר שִׁמְעִ֤י לַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ ט֣וֹב הַדָּבָ֔ר כַּאֲשֶׁ֤ר דִּבֶּר֙ אֲדֹנִ֣י הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ כֵּ֖ן יַעֲשֶׂ֣ה עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ וַיֵּ֧שֶׁב שִׁמְעִ֛י בִּירוּשָׁלִַ֖ם יָמִ֥ים רַבִּֽים׃ס

39
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y miqּetz֙ shshalo֣shsh shshani֔ym vayּiberech֤u shsheneֽy-'abadiym֙ leshshime'i֔y 'el-'aki֥yshsh bּeֽn-ma'aka֖h me֣leke gּa֑t vayּagּi֤ydu leshshime'iy֙ le'mo֔r hinּe֥h 'abade֖yka bּegaֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But three years later, two of Shimei’s slaves ran off to Achish son of Maakah, king of Gath, and Shimei was told, 'Your slaves are in Gath.'

וַיְהִ֗י מִקֵּץ֙ שָׁלֹ֣שׁ שָׁנִ֔ים וַיִּבְרְח֤וּ שְׁנֵֽי־עֲבָדִים֙ לְשִׁמְעִ֔י אֶל־אָכִ֥ישׁ בֶּֽן־מַעֲכָ֖ה מֶ֣לֶךְ גַּ֑ת וַיַּגִּ֤ידוּ לְשִׁמְעִי֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הִנֵּ֥ה עֲבָדֶ֖יךָ בְּגַֽת׃

40
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣qam shshime'i֗y vaֽyּachaboshsh֙ 'et-chamor֔o vayּe֤leke gּa֨tah֙ 'el-'aki֔yshsh lebaqּe֖shsh 'et-'abada֑yv vayּe֣leke shshime'i֔y vayּabe֥ 'et-'abada֖yv migּaֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)At this, he saddled his donkey and went to Achish at Gath in search of his slaves. So Shimei went away and brought the slaves back from Gath.

וַיָּ֣קָם שִׁמְעִ֗י וַֽיַּחֲבֹשׁ֙ אֶת־חֲמֹר֔וֹ וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ גַּ֨תָה֙ אֶל־אָכִ֔ישׁ לְבַקֵּ֖שׁ אֶת־עֲבָדָ֑יו וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ שִׁמְעִ֔י וַיָּבֵ֥א אֶת־עֲבָדָ֖יו מִגַּֽת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּugּa֖d lishshelomo֑h kּiy-hala֨ke shshime'i֧y miyrushshala֛im gּa֖t vayּashshoֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Solomon was told that Shimei had gone from Jerusalem to Gath and had returned,

וַיֻּגַּ֖ד לִשְׁלֹמֹ֑ה כִּי־הָלַ֨ךְ שִׁמְעִ֧י מִירוּשָׁלִַ֛ם גַּ֖ת וַיָּשֹֽׁב׃

42
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֨ch hamּe֜leke vayּiqera֣ leshshime'i֗y vayּo֨'mer 'ela֜yv hal֧o hishshebּa'etּi֣yka baֽyhva֗h va'a'i֤d bּeka֙ le'mo֔r bּey֣om tze'teka֗ vehaֽlaketּa֙ 'a֣neh va'a֔nah yado֥'a tּeda֖ kּi֣y m֣ot tּam֑ut vatּo֧'mer 'ela֛y t֥ob hadּaba֖r shshamaֽ'etּiy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)the king summoned Shimei and said to him, 'Did I not make you swear by the LORD and warn you, "On the day you leave to go anywhere else, you can be sure you will die"? At that time you said to me, "What you say is good. I will obey."'

וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ וַיִּקְרָ֣א לְשִׁמְעִ֗י וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֜יו הֲל֧וֹא הִשְׁבַּעְתִּ֣יךָ בַֽיהוָ֗ה וָאָעִ֤ד בְּךָ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר בְּי֣וֹם צֵאתְךָ֗ וְהָֽלַכְתָּ֙ אָ֣נֶה וָאָ֔נָה יָדֹ֥עַ תֵּדַ֖ע כִּ֣י מ֣וֹת תָּמ֑וּת וַתֹּ֧אמֶר אֵלַ֛י ט֥וֹב הַדָּבָ֖ר שָׁמָֽעְתִּי׃

43
Phonetic (Hebrew): umadּ֕u'a lo֣ shshama֔retּa 'e֖t shshebu'a֣t yehva֑h ve'et-hamּitzeva֖h 'ashsher-tziui֥ytiy 'aleֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Why then did you not keep your oath to the LORD and obey the command I gave you?'

וּמַדּ֕וּעַ לֹ֣א שָׁמַ֔רְתָּ אֵ֖ת שְׁבֻעַ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה וְאֶת־הַמִּצְוָ֖ה אֲשֶׁר־צִוִּ֥יתִי עָלֶֽיךָ׃

44
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer hamּe֜leke 'el-shshime'i֗y 'atּa֤h yada֨'etּa֙ 'e֣t kּal-hara'a֗h 'ashshe֤r yada'֙ leba֣beka֔ 'ashshe֥r 'ashsi֖yta ledavi֣d 'abi֑y veheshshi֧yb yehva֛h 'et-ra'ateka֖ bּero'shsheֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The king also said to Shimei, 'You know in your heart all the wrong you did to my father David. Now the LORD will repay you for your wrongdoing.'

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ אֶל־שִׁמְעִ֗י אַתָּ֤ה יָדַ֨עְתָּ֙ אֵ֣ת כָּל־הָרָעָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֤ר יָדַע֙ לְבָ֣בְךָ֔ אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָשִׂ֖יתָ לְדָוִ֣ד אָבִ֑י וְהֵשִׁ֧יב יְהוָ֛ה אֶת־רָעָתְךָ֖ בְּרֹאשֶֽׁךָ׃

45
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehamּe֥leke shshelomo֖h bּar֑uke vekisּe֣ davi֗d yiheye֥h nak֛on lipene֥y yehva֖h 'ad-'olaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'But King Solomon will be blessed, and David’s throne will remain secure before the LORD forever.'

וְהַמֶּ֥לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה בָּר֑וּךְ וְכִסֵּ֣א דָוִ֗ד יִהְיֶ֥ה נָכ֛וֹן לִפְנֵ֥י יְהוָ֖ה עַד־עוֹלָֽם׃

46
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayetza֣v hamּe֗leke 'et-bּenaya֨hu֙ bּen-yeh֣oyada֔ vayּetze֕ vayּipegּa'-bּ֖o vayּamo֑t vehamּamelaka֥h nak֖onah bּeyad-shshelomoֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the king gave the order to Benaiah son of Jehoiada, and he went out and struck Shimei down and he died. The kingdom was now firmly established in Solomon’s hands.

וַיְצַ֣ו הַמֶּ֗לֶךְ אֶת־בְּנָיָ֨הוּ֙ בֶּן־יְה֣וֹיָדָ֔ע וַיֵּצֵ֕א וַיִּפְגַּע־בּ֖וֹ וַיָּמֹ֑ת וְהַמַּמְלָכָ֥ה נָכ֖וֹנָה בְּיַד־שְׁלֹמֹֽה׃
