Chapter 20
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): uben-hada֣d meֽleke-'ara֗m qabatz֙ 'et-kּal-cheyl֔o ushsheloshshi֨ym ushshena֥yim me֛leke 'itּ֖o ves֣us vara֑keb vayּa֗'al vayּa֨tzar֙ 'al-shsho֣mer֔on vayּilּa֖chem bּaֽhּ׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Ben-Hadad king of Aram mustered his entire army. Accompanied by thirty-two kings with their horses and chariots, he went up and besieged Samaria and attacked it.

וּבֶן־הֲדַ֣ד מֶֽלֶךְ־אֲרָ֗ם קָבַץ֙ אֶת־כָּל־חֵיל֔וֹ וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֨ים וּשְׁנַ֥יִם מֶ֛לֶךְ אִתּ֖וֹ וְס֣וּס וָרָ֑כֶב וַיַּ֗עַל וַיָּ֨צַר֙ עַל־שֹׁ֣מְר֔וֹן וַיִּלָּ֖חֶם בָּֽהּ׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֧ch male'aki֛ym 'el-'ache'a֥b meֽleke-yishsera'e֖l ha'iֽyrah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He sent messengers into the city to Ahab king of Israel, saying, 'This is what Ben-Hadad says:'

וַיִּשְׁלַ֧ח מַלְאָכִ֛ים אֶל־אַחְאָ֥ב מֶֽלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הָעִֽירָה׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer l֗o kּo֚h 'ama֣r bּen-hada֔d kּasepּeka֥ uֽzehabeka֖ liֽy-h֑u venashshe֧yka ubane֛yka hatּobi֖ym liy-heֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'"Your silver and gold are mine, and the best of your wives and children are mine."'

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֗וֹ כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר בֶּן־הֲדַ֔ד כַּסְפְּךָ֥ וּֽזְהָבְךָ֖ לִֽי־ה֑וּא וְנָשֶׁ֧יךָ וּבָנֶ֛יךָ הַטּוֹבִ֖ים לִי־הֵֽם׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֤'an meֽleke-yishsera'el֙ vayּo֔'mer kּidebareka֖ 'adoni֣y hamּe֑leke leka֥ 'ani֖y vekal-'ashsher-liֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The king of Israel answered, 'Just as you say, my lord the king. I and all I have are yours.'

וַיַּ֤עַן מֶֽלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וַיֹּ֔אמֶר כִּדְבָרְךָ֖ אֲדֹנִ֣י הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ לְךָ֥ אֲנִ֖י וְכָל־אֲשֶׁר־לִֽי׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashshu֨bu֙ hamּale'aki֔ym vayּo֣'mer֔u kּoֽh-'ama֥r bּen-hada֖d le'mo֑r kּiֽy-shshala֤chetּiy 'ele֨yka֙ le'mo֔r kּasepּeka֧ uzehabeka֛ venashshe֥yka ubane֖yka li֥y titּeֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The messengers came again and said, 'This is what Ben-Hadad says: "I sent to demand your silver and gold, your wives and your children."'

וַיָּשֻׁ֨בוּ֙ הַמַּלְאָכִ֔ים וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ כֹּֽה־אָמַ֥ר בֶּן־הֲדַ֖ד לֵאמֹ֑ר כִּֽי־שָׁלַ֤חְתִּי אֵלֶ֨יךָ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר כַּסְפְּךָ֧ וּזְהָבְךָ֛ וְנָשֶׁ֥יךָ וּבָנֶ֖יךָ לִ֥י תִתֵּֽן׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y ׀ 'im-kּa'e֣t macha֗r 'eshshela֤ch 'et-'abaday֙ 'ele֔yka vechipּeshsu֙ 'et-bּe֣yteka֔ ve'e֖t bּatּe֣y 'abade֑yka vehayah֙ kּal-machema֣d 'eyne֔yka yashsi֥ymu beyada֖m velaqaֽchu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'"But about this time tomorrow I am going to send my officials to search your palace and the houses of your officials. They will seize everything you value and carry it away."'

כִּ֣י ׀ אִם־כָּעֵ֣ת מָחָ֗ר אֶשְׁלַ֤ח אֶת־עֲבָדַי֙ אֵלֶ֔יךָ וְחִפְּשׂוּ֙ אֶת־בֵּ֣יתְךָ֔ וְאֵ֖ת בָּתֵּ֣י עֲבָדֶ֑יךָ וְהָיָה֙ כָּל־מַחְמַ֣ד עֵינֶ֔יךָ יָשִׂ֥ימוּ בְיָדָ֖ם וְלָקָֽחוּ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֤ meֽleke-yishsera'el֙ lekal-ziqene֣y ha'a֔retz vayּo֨'mer֙ dּe'ֽu-na֣ ure'֔u kּi֥y ra'a֖h ze֣h mebaqּe֑shsh kּiֽy-shshala֨ch 'ela֜y lenashsha֤y ulebanay֙ ulekasepּi֣y velizehabi֔y velo֥ mana֖'etּiy mimּeֽnּu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The king of Israel summoned all the elders of the land and said to them, 'See how this man is looking for trouble! When he sent for my wives and my children, my silver and my gold, I did not refuse him.'

וַיִּקְרָ֤א מֶֽלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ לְכָל־זִקְנֵ֣י הָאָ֔רֶץ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ דְּעֽוּ־נָ֣א וּרְא֔וּ כִּ֥י רָעָ֖ה זֶ֣ה מְבַקֵּ֑שׁ כִּֽי־שָׁלַ֨ח אֵלַ֜י לְנָשַׁ֤י וּלְבָנַי֙ וּלְכַסְפִּ֣י וְלִזְהָבִ֔י וְלֹ֥א מָנַ֖עְתִּי מִמֶּֽנּוּ׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֥u 'ela֛yv kּal-hazּeqeni֖ym vekal-ha'a֑m 'al-tּishshema֖ vel֥o to'beֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The elders and the people all answered, 'Don’t listen to him or agree to his demands.'

וַיֹּאמְר֥וּ אֵלָ֛יו כָּל־הַזְּקֵנִ֖ים וְכָל־הָעָ֑ם אַל־תִּשְׁמַ֖ע וְל֥וֹא תֹאבֶֽה׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֜'mer lemale'ake֣y ben-hada֗d 'imer֞u laֽ'doni֤y hamּe֨leke֙ kּol֩ 'ashsher-shshala֨chetּa 'el-'abedּeka֤ bariֽ'shshonah֙ 'e'eshse֔h vehadּaba֣r hazּe֔h lo֥ 'uka֖l la'ashs֑ot vayּeֽleku֙ hamּale'aki֔ym vayeshshibu֖hu dּabaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So he replied to Ben-Hadad’s messengers, 'Tell my lord the king, "Your servant will do all you demanded the first time, but this demand I cannot meet."' They left and took the answer back to Ben-Hadad.

וַיֹּ֜אמֶר לְמַלְאֲכֵ֣י בֶן־הֲדַ֗ד אִמְר֞וּ לַֽאדֹנִ֤י הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ כֹּל֩ אֲשֶׁר־שָׁלַ֨חְתָּ אֶל־עַבְדְּךָ֤ בָרִֽאשֹׁנָה֙ אֶעֱשֶׂ֔ה וְהַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֔ה לֹ֥א אוּכַ֖ל לַעֲשׂ֑וֹת וַיֵּֽלְכוּ֙ הַמַּלְאָכִ֔ים וַיְשִׁבֻ֖הוּ דָּבָֽר׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֤ch 'elayv֙ bּen-hada֔d vayּo֕'mer kּoֽh-ya'ashs֥un li֛y 'elohi֖ym veko֣h yosi֑pu 'im-yishsepּoq֙ 'apa֣r shshomer֔on lishshe'ali֕ym lekal-ha'a֖m 'ashshe֥r bּeragelaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Ben-Hadad sent another message to Ahab: 'May the gods deal with me, be it ever so severely, if enough dust remains in Samaria to give each of my men a handful.'

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח אֵלָיו֙ בֶּן־הֲדַ֔ד וַיֹּ֕אמֶר כֹּֽה־יַעֲשׂ֥וּן לִ֛י אֱלֹהִ֖ים וְכֹ֣ה יוֹסִ֑פוּ אִם־יִשְׂפֹּק֙ עֲפַ֣ר שֹׁמְר֔וֹן לִשְׁעָלִ֕ים לְכָל־הָעָ֖ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּרַגְלָֽי׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֤'an meֽleke-yishsera'el֙ vayּo֣'mer dּabּer֔u 'al-yitehalּe֥l choge֖r kּimepatּeֽcha׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The king of Israel answered, 'Tell him: "One who puts on his armour should not boast like one who takes it off."'

וַיַּ֤עַן מֶֽלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וַיֹּ֣אמֶר דַּבְּר֔וּ אַל־יִתְהַלֵּ֥ל חֹגֵ֖ר כִּמְפַתֵּֽחַ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y kּishshemo֨'a֙ 'et-hadּaba֣r hazּe֔h veh֥u shshote֛h h֥u vehamּelaki֖ym bּasּukּ֑ot vayּo֤'mer 'el-'abadayv֙ shsi֔ymu vayּashsi֖ymu 'al-ha'iֽyr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Ben-Hadad heard this message while he and the kings were drinking in their tents, and he ordered his men: 'Prepare to attack.' So they prepared to attack the city.

וַיְהִ֗י כִּשְׁמֹ֨עַ֙ אֶת־הַדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֔ה וְה֥וּא שֹׁתֶ֛ה ה֥וּא וְהַמְּלָכִ֖ים בַּסֻּכּ֑וֹת וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֶל־עֲבָדָיו֙ שִׂ֔ימוּ וַיָּשִׂ֖ימוּ עַל־הָעִֽיר׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehinּe֣h ׀ nabi֣y 'echa֗d nigּashsh֮ 'el-'ache'a֣b meֽleke-yishsera'el֒ vayּo֗'mer kּo֚h 'ama֣r yehva֔h heֽra'i֔yta 'e֛t kּal-heham֥on hagּad֖ol hazּe֑h hineni֨y noten֤o beyaֽdeka֙ hayּ֔om veyada'etּa֖ kּiֽy-'ani֥y yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Meanwhile a prophet came to Ahab king of Israel and announced, 'This is what the LORD says: "Do you see this vast army? I will give it into your hand today, and then you will know that I am the LORD."'

וְהִנֵּ֣ה ׀ נָבִ֣יא אֶחָ֗ד נִגַּשׁ֮ אֶל־אַחְאָ֣ב מֶֽלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ וַיֹּ֗אמֶר כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה הְֽרָאִ֔יתָ אֵ֛ת כָּל־הֶהָמ֥וֹן הַגָּד֖וֹל הַזֶּ֑ה הִנְנִ֨י נֹתְנ֤וֹ בְיָֽדְךָ֙ הַיּ֔וֹם וְיָדַעְתָּ֖ כִּֽי־אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer 'ache'ab֙ bּemi֔y vayּo֨'mer֙ kּoֽh-'ama֣r yehva֔h bּena'are֖y shsare֣y hamּediyn֑ot vayּo֛'mer miֽy-ye'eso֥r hamּilechama֖h vayּo֥'mer 'aֽtּah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'But who will do this?' asked Ahab. The prophet replied, 'This is what the LORD says: "The junior officers under the district governors will do it."' 'And who will start the battle?' he asked. The prophet answered, 'You will.'

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אַחְאָב֙ בְּמִ֔י וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ כֹּֽה־אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה בְּנַעֲרֵ֖י שָׂרֵ֣י הַמְּדִינ֑וֹת וַיֹּ֛אמֶר מִֽי־יֶאְסֹ֥ר הַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה וַיֹּ֥אמֶר אָֽתָּה׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּipeqo֗d 'eֽt-na'arey֙ shsare֣y hamּediyn֔ot vayּihey֕u ma'ta֖yim shshena֣yim ushsheloshshi֑ym ve'achareyhe֗m pּaqa֧d 'et-kּal-ha'a֛m kּal-bּene֥y yishsera'e֖l shshibe'a֥t 'alapiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Ahab summoned the 232 junior officers under the district governors. Then he assembled the rest of the Israelites, 7,000 in all.

וַיִּפְקֹ֗ד אֶֽת־נַעֲרֵי֙ שָׂרֵ֣י הַמְּדִינ֔וֹת וַיִּהְי֕וּ מָאתַ֖יִם שְׁנַ֣יִם וּשְׁלֹשִׁ֑ים וְאַחֲרֵיהֶ֗ם פָּקַ֧ד אֶת־כָּל־הָעָ֛ם כָּל־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל שִׁבְעַ֥ת אֲלָפִֽים׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze'֖u bּaֽtzּahora֑yim uben-hadad֩ shshote֨h shshikּ֜or bּasּukּ֗ot h֧u vehamּelaki֛ym shsheloshshiֽym-ushshena֥yim me֖leke 'oze֥r 'otֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They set out at noon while Ben-Hadad and the thirty-two kings allied with him were in their tents getting drunk.

וַיֵּצְא֖וּ בַּֽצָּהֳרָ֑יִם וּבֶן־הֲדַד֩ שֹׁתֶ֨ה שִׁכּ֜וֹר בַּסֻּכּ֗וֹת ה֧וּא וְהַמְּלָכִ֛ים שְׁלֹשִֽׁים־וּשְׁנַ֥יִם מֶ֖לֶךְ עֹזֵ֥ר אֹתֽוֹ׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze'֗u na'are֛y shsare֥y hamּediyn֖ot bּariֽ'shshona֑h vayּishshela֣ch bּen-hada֗d vayּagּi֤ydu lo֙ le'mo֔r 'anashshi֕ym yatze'֖u mishshּomerֽon׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The junior officers under the district governors went out first. Now Ben-Hadad had sent out scouts, who reported, 'Men are advancing from Samaria.'

וַיֵּצְא֗וּ נַעֲרֵ֛י שָׂרֵ֥י הַמְּדִינ֖וֹת בָּרִֽאשֹׁנָ֑ה וַיִּשְׁלַ֣ח בֶּן־הֲדַ֗ד וַיַּגִּ֤ידוּ לוֹ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אֲנָשִׁ֕ים יָצְא֖וּ מִשֹּׁמְרֽוֹן׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֛'mer 'im-leshshal֥om yatza֖'u tּipeshs֣um chayּi֑ym ve'i֧m lemilechama֛h yatza֖'u chayּi֥ym tּipeshsֽum׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He said, 'If they have come out for peace, take them alive; if they have come out for war, take them alive.'

וַיֹּ֛אמֶר אִם־לְשָׁל֥וֹם יָצָ֖אוּ תִּפְשׂ֣וּם חַיִּ֑ים וְאִ֧ם לְמִלְחָמָ֛ה יָצָ֖אוּ חַיִּ֥ים תִּפְשֽׂוּם׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֨lּeh֙ yatze'֣u min-ha'i֔yr na'are֖y shsare֣y hamּediyn֑ot vehacha֖yil 'ashshe֥r 'achareyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The junior officers under the district governors marched out of the city with the army behind them

וְאֵ֨לֶּה֙ יָצְא֣וּ מִן־הָעִ֔יר נַעֲרֵ֖י שָׂרֵ֣י הַמְּדִינ֑וֹת וְהַחַ֖יִל אֲשֶׁ֥ר אַחֲרֵיהֶֽם׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּakּu֙ 'i֣yshsh 'iyshsh֔o vayּanu֣su 'ara֔m vaֽyּiredּepe֖m yishsera'e֑l vayּimּale֗t bּen-hadad֙ me֣leke 'ara֔m 'al-s֖us uparashshiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and each one struck down his opponent. At that, the Arameans fled, with the Israelites in pursuit. But Ben-Hadad king of Aram escaped on horseback with some of his horsemen.

וַיַּכּוּ֙ אִ֣ישׁ אִישׁ֔וֹ וַיָּנֻ֣סוּ אֲרָ֔ם וַֽיִּרְדְּפֵ֖ם יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיִּמָּלֵ֗ט בֶּן־הֲדַד֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ אֲרָ֔ם עַל־ס֖וּס וּפָרָשִֽׁים׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze'֙ me֣leke yishsera'e֔l vayּa֥ke 'et-hasּ֖us ve'et-hara֑keb vehikּa֥h ba'ara֖m makּa֥h gedolaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The king of Israel advanced and overpowered the horses and chariots and inflicted heavy losses on the Arameans.

וַיֵּצֵא֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיַּ֥ךְ אֶת־הַסּ֖וּס וְאֶת־הָרָ֑כֶב וְהִכָּ֥ה בַאֲרָ֖ם מַכָּ֥ה גְדוֹלָֽה׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּigּa֤shsh hanּabiy'֙ 'el-me֣leke yishsera'e֔l vayּo֤'mer lo֙ le֣ke hitechazּa֔q veda֥ ure'e֖h 'e֣t 'ashsheֽr-tּa'ashse֑h kּi֚y liteshshuba֣t hashshּana֔h me֥leke 'ara֖m 'ole֥h 'aleֽyka׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Afterwards, the prophet came to the king of Israel and said, 'Strengthen your position and see what must be done, because next spring the king of Aram will attack you again.'

וַיִּגַּ֤שׁ הַנָּבִיא֙ אֶל־מֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ לֵ֣ךְ הִתְחַזַּ֔ק וְדַ֥ע וּרְאֵ֖ה אֵ֣ת אֲשֶֽׁר־תַּעֲשֶׂ֑ה כִּ֚י לִתְשׁוּבַ֣ת הַשָּׁנָ֔ה מֶ֥לֶךְ אֲרָ֖ם עֹלֶ֥ה עָלֶֽיךָ׃ס

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'abede֨y meֽleke-'ara֜m 'amer֣u 'ela֗yv 'elohe֤y hariym֙ 'elo֣heyhe֔m 'al-kּe֖n chazeq֣u mimּe֑nּu ve'ula֗m nilּache֤m 'itּam֙ bּamּiyshsh֔or 'im-lo֥ necheza֖q meheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Meanwhile, the officials of the king of Aram advised him, 'Their gods are gods of the hills. That is why they were too strong for us. But if we fight them on the plains, surely we will be stronger than they.'

וְעַבְדֵ֨י מֶֽלֶךְ־אֲרָ֜ם אָמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֗יו אֱלֹהֵ֤י הָרִים֙ אֱלֹ֣הֵיהֶ֔ם עַל־כֵּ֖ן חָזְק֣וּ מִמֶּ֑נּוּ וְאוּלָ֗ם נִלָּחֵ֤ם אִתָּם֙ בַּמִּישׁ֔וֹר אִם־לֹ֥א נֶחֱזַ֖ק מֵהֶֽם׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-hadּaba֥r hazּe֖h 'ashse֑h hase֤r hamּelakiym֙ 'i֣yshsh mimּeqom֔o veshsi֥ym pּach֖ot tּachetּeyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'Do this: Remove all the kings from their commands and replace them with other officers.'

וְאֶת־הַדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּ֖ה עֲשֵׂ֑ה הָסֵ֤ר הַמְּלָכִים֙ אִ֣ישׁ מִמְּקֹמ֔וֹ וְשִׂ֥ים פַּח֖וֹת תַּחְתֵּיהֶֽם׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֣h tiֽmeneh-leka֣ ׀ cha֡yil kּachayil֩ hanּope֨l me'ota֜ke ves֣us kּasּ֣us ׀ vere֣keb kּare֗keb veniֽlּachama֤h 'otam֙ bּamּiyshsh֔or 'im-lo֥ necheza֖q mehe֑m vayּishshema֥ leqola֖m vayּa֥'ashs kּeֽn׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)'You must also raise an army like the one you lost, horse for horse and chariot for chariot, so we can fight Israel on the plains. Then surely we will be stronger than they.' He agreed with them and acted accordingly.

וְאַתָּ֣ה תִֽמְנֶה־לְךָ֣ ׀ חַ֡יִל כַּחַיִל֩ הַנֹּפֵ֨ל מֵאוֹתָ֜ךְ וְס֣וּס כַּסּ֣וּס ׀ וְרֶ֣כֶב כָּרֶ֗כֶב וְנִֽלָּחֲמָ֤ה אוֹתָם֙ בַּמִּישׁ֔וֹר אִם־לֹ֥א נֶחֱזַ֖ק מֵהֶ֑ם וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע לְקֹלָ֖ם וַיַּ֥עַשׂ כֵּֽן׃פ

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyehiy֙ liteshshuba֣t hashshּana֔h vayּipeqo֥d bּen-hada֖d 'et-'ara֑m vayּa֣'al 'ape֔qah lamּilechama֖h 'im-yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The next spring Ben-Hadad mustered the Arameans and went up to Aphek to fight against Israel.

וַֽיְהִי֙ לִתְשׁוּבַ֣ת הַשָּׁנָ֔ה וַיִּפְקֹ֥ד בֶּן־הֲדַ֖ד אֶת־אֲרָ֑ם וַיַּ֣עַל אֲפֵ֔קָה לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה עִם־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubene֣y yishsera'e֗l hatepּaqedu֙ vekalekּel֔u vayּelek֖u liqera'ta֑m vayּachan֨u beneֽy-yishsera'e֜l negedּa֗m kּishsheney֙ chashsipe֣y 'izּi֔ym va'ara֖m mile'֥u 'et-ha'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When the Israelites were also mustered and given provisions, they marched out to meet them. The Israelites camped opposite them like two small flocks of goats, while the Arameans covered the countryside.

וּבְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל הָתְפָּקְדוּ֙ וְכָלְכְּל֔וּ וַיֵּלְכ֖וּ לִקְרָאתָ֑ם וַיַּחֲנ֨וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל נֶגְדָּ֗ם כִּשְׁנֵי֙ חֲשִׂפֵ֣י עִזִּ֔ים וַאֲרָ֖ם מִלְא֥וּ אֶת־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּigּa֞shsh 'i֣yshsh ha'elohi֗ym vayּo'mer֮ 'el-me֣leke yishsera'el֒ vayּo֜'mer kּoֽh-'ama֣r yehva֗h ya֠'an 'ashshe֨r 'amer֤u 'aram֙ 'elohe֤y hariym֙ yehva֔h veloֽ'-'elohe֥y 'amaqi֖ym h֑u ve֠natatּiy 'et-kּal-heham֨on hagּa֤dol hazּeh֙ bּeyade֔ka viֽyda'etּe֖m kּiֽy-'ani֥y yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The man of God came up and told the king of Israel, 'This is what the LORD says: "Because the Arameans think the LORD is a god of the hills and not a god of the valleys, I will deliver this vast army into your hands, and you will know that I am the LORD."'

וַיִּגַּ֞שׁ אִ֣ישׁ הָאֱלֹהִ֗ים וַיֹּאמֶר֮ אֶל־מֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ וַיֹּ֜אמֶר כֹּֽה־אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֗ה יַ֠עַן אֲשֶׁ֨ר אָמְר֤וּ אֲרָם֙ אֱלֹהֵ֤י הָרִים֙ יְהוָ֔ה וְלֹֽא־אֱלֹהֵ֥י עֲמָקִ֖ים ה֑וּא וְ֠נָתַתִּי אֶת־כָּל־הֶהָמ֨וֹן הַגָּ֤דוֹל הַזֶּה֙ בְּיָדֶ֔ךָ וִֽידַעְתֶּ֖ם כִּֽי־אֲנִ֥י יְהוָֽה׃

29
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּachan֧u 'e֦lּeh no֥kach 'e֖lּeh shshibe'a֣t yami֑ym vayehi֣y ׀ bּayּ֣om hashshּebiy'i֗y vatּiqerab֙ hamּilechama֔h vayּakּ֨u beneֽy-yishsera'e֧l 'et-'ara֛m me'ah-'e֥lep rageli֖y bּey֥om 'echaֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)For seven days they camped opposite each other, and on the seventh day the battle was joined. The Israelites struck down a hundred thousand Aramean foot soldiers in one day.

וַֽיַּחֲנ֧וּ אֵ֦לֶּה נֹ֥כַח אֵ֖לֶּה שִׁבְעַ֣ת יָמִ֑ים וַיְהִ֣י ׀ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַשְּׁבִיעִ֗י וַתִּקְרַב֙ הַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה וַיַּכּ֨וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵ֧ל אֶת־אֲרָ֛ם מֵאָה־אֶ֥לֶף רַגְלִ֖י בְּי֥וֹם אֶחָֽד׃

30
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּanu֨su hanּotari֥ym ׀ 'apeqah֮ 'el-ha'iyr֒ vatּipּol֙ hachoma֔h 'al-'eshseri֨ym veshshibe'a֥h 'e֛lep 'i֖yshsh hanּotari֑ym uben-hada֣d na֔s vayּabo֥ 'el-ha'i֖yr che֥der bּechaֽder׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)The rest of them escaped to the city of Aphek, where the wall collapsed on twenty-seven thousand of them. And Ben-Hadad fled to the city and hid in an inner room.

וַיָּנֻ֨סוּ הַנּוֹתָרִ֥ים ׀ אֲפֵקָה֮ אֶל־הָעִיר֒ וַתִּפֹּל֙ הַחוֹמָ֔ה עַל־עֶשְׂרִ֨ים וְשִׁבְעָ֥ה אֶ֛לֶף אִ֖ישׁ הַנּוֹתָרִ֑ים וּבֶן־הֲדַ֣ד נָ֔ס וַיָּבֹ֥א אֶל־הָעִ֖יר חֶ֥דֶר בְּחָֽדֶר׃ס

31
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֣u 'elayv֮ 'abadayv֒ hinּeֽh-na֣ shshama֔'enu kּi֗y malekey֙ bּe֣yt yishsera'e֔l kּiֽy-maleke֥y che֖sed he֑m nashsi֣ymah nּa'֩ shsaqּi֨ym bּematene֜ynu vachabali֣ym bּero'shshe֗nu venetze'֙ 'el-me֣leke yishsera'e֔l 'ula֖y yechayּe֥h 'et-napeshsheֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)His officials said to him, 'Look, we have heard that the kings of Israel are merciful. Let us go to the king of Israel with sackcloth around our waists and ropes around our heads. Perhaps he will spare your life.'

וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלָיו֮ עֲבָדָיו֒ הִנֵּֽה־נָ֣א שָׁמַ֔עְנוּ כִּ֗י מַלְכֵי֙ בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כִּֽי־מַלְכֵ֥י חֶ֖סֶד הֵ֑ם נָשִׂ֣ימָה נָּא֩ שַׂקִּ֨ים בְּמָתְנֵ֜ינוּ וַחֲבָלִ֣ים בְּרֹאשֵׁ֗נוּ וְנֵצֵא֙ אֶל־מֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אוּלַ֖י יְחַיֶּ֥ה אֶת־נַפְשֶֽׁךָ׃

32
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּachegּeru֩ shsaqּi֨ym bּemateneyhe֜m vachabali֣ym bּera'shsheyhe֗m vayּabo֨'u֙ 'el-me֣leke yishsera'e֔l vayּo֣'mer֔u 'abedּeka֧ ben-hada֛d 'ama֖r tּechiֽy-na֣ napeshshi֑y vayּo֛'mer ha'ode֥nּu cha֖y 'achi֥y hֽu'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Wearing sackcloth around their waists and ropes around their heads, they went to the king of Israel and said, 'Your servant Ben-Hadad says: "Please let me live."' The king answered, 'Is he still alive? He is my brother.'

וַיַּחְגְּרוּ֩ שַׂקִּ֨ים בְּמָתְנֵיהֶ֜ם וַחֲבָלִ֣ים בְּרָאשֵׁיהֶ֗ם וַיָּבֹ֨אוּ֙ אֶל־מֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ עַבְדְּךָ֧ בֶן־הֲדַ֛ד אָמַ֖ר תְּחִֽי־נָ֣א נַפְשִׁ֑י וַיֹּ֛אמֶר הַעוֹדֶ֥נּוּ חַ֖י אָחִ֥י הֽוּא׃

33
Phonetic (Hebrew): veha'anashshiym֩ yenachashsh֨u vaֽyemahar֜u vayּachelet֣u hamimּe֗nּu vayּoֽ'meru֙ 'achi֣yka ben-hada֔d vayּo֖'mer bּo֣'u qachu֑hu vayּetze֤ 'elayv֙ bּen-hada֔d vֽayּa'ale֖hu 'al-hamּerekּabaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The men took this as a good sign and were quick to take up his word. 'Yes, your brother Ben-Hadad!' they said. 'Go and get him,' the king said. When Ben-Hadad came out, Ahab had him come up into his chariot.

וְהָאֲנָשִׁים֩ יְנַחֲשׁ֨וּ וַֽיְמַהֲר֜וּ וַיַּחְלְט֣וּ הֲמִמֶּ֗נּוּ וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ אָחִ֣יךָ בֶן־הֲדַ֔ד וַיֹּ֖אמֶר בֹּ֣אוּ קָחֻ֑הוּ וַיֵּצֵ֤א אֵלָיו֙ בֶּן־הֲדַ֔ד וַֽיַּעֲלֵ֖הוּ עַל־הַמֶּרְכָּבָֽה׃

34
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'ela֡yv he'ari֣ym 'ashsher-laֽqach-'abiy֩ me'e֨t 'abi֜yka 'ashshi֗yb ve֠chutzot tּashsi֨ym leka֤ bedamּe֨shseq֙ kּa'ashsher-shsa֤m 'abiy֙ bּeshsho֣mer֔on va'ani֖y bּabּeri֣yt 'ashshalּeche֑kּa vayּikerat-l֥o beri֖yt vaֽyeshshalּecheֽhu׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)'I will return the towns my father took from your father,' Ben-Hadad offered. 'You may set up your own market areas in Damascus, as my father did in Samaria.' Ahab said, 'On the basis of a treaty I will set you free.' So he made a treaty with him and let him go.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֡יו הֶעָרִ֣ים אֲשֶׁר־לָֽקַח־אָבִי֩ מֵאֵ֨ת אָבִ֜יךָ אָשִׁ֗יב וְ֠חוּצוֹת תָּשִׂ֨ים לְךָ֤ בְדַמֶּ֨שֶׂק֙ כַּאֲשֶׁר־שָׂ֤ם אָבִי֙ בְּשֹׁ֣מְר֔וֹן וַאֲנִ֖י בַּבְּרִ֣ית אֲשַׁלְּחֶ֑ךָּ וַיִּכְרָת־ל֥וֹ בְרִ֖ית וַֽיְשַׁלְּחֵֽהוּ׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֨yshsh 'echa֜d mibּene֣y hanּebiy'i֗ym 'ama֧r 'el-re'e֛hu bּideba֥r yehva֖h hakּe֣yniy na֑ vayema'e֥n ha'i֖yshsh lehakּotֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)By the word of the LORD one of the company of the prophets said to his companion, 'Strike me with your weapon,' but the man refused.

וְאִ֨ישׁ אֶחָ֜ד מִבְּנֵ֣י הַנְּבִיאִ֗ים אָמַ֧ר אֶל־רֵעֵ֛הוּ בִּדְבַ֥ר יְהוָ֖ה הַכֵּ֣ינִי נָ֑א וַיְמָאֵ֥ן הָאִ֖ישׁ לְהַכֹּתֽוֹ׃

36
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer l֗o ya֚'an 'ashshe֤r loֽ'-shshama֨'etּa֙ bּeq֣ol yehva֔h hinּeka֤ holeke֙ meֽ'itּi֔y vehikּeka֖ ha'areye֑h vayּe֨leke֙ meֽ'etzel֔o vayּimetza'e֥hu ha'areye֖h vayּakּeֽhu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So the prophet said, 'Because you have not obeyed the LORD, as soon as you leave me a lion will kill you.' And after the man left, a lion found him and killed him.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ל֗וֹ יַ֚עַן אֲשֶׁ֤ר לֹֽא־שָׁמַ֨עְתָּ֙ בְּק֣וֹל יְהוָ֔ה הִנְּךָ֤ הוֹלֵךְ֙ מֵֽאִתִּ֔י וְהִכְּךָ֖ הָאַרְיֵ֑ה וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ֙ מֵֽאֶצְל֔וֹ וַיִּמְצָאֵ֥הוּ הָאַרְיֵ֖ה וַיַּכֵּֽהוּ׃

37
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּimetza'֙ 'i֣yshsh 'ache֔r vayּo֖'mer hakּe֣yniy na֑ vayּakּe֥hu ha'i֖yshsh hakּe֥h upatzoֽ'a׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The prophet found another man and said, 'Strike me, please.' So the man struck him and wounded him.

וַיִּמְצָא֙ אִ֣ישׁ אַחֵ֔ר וַיֹּ֖אמֶר הַכֵּ֣ינִי נָ֑א וַיַּכֵּ֥הוּ הָאִ֖ישׁ הַכֵּ֥ה וּפָצֹֽעַ׃

38
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֨leke֙ hanּabi֔y vayּa'amo֥d lamּe֖leke 'al-hadּa֑reke vayּitechapּe֥shs bּa'ape֖r 'al-'eynaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the prophet went and stood by the road waiting for the king. He disguised himself with his headband down over his eyes.

וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ֙ הַנָּבִ֔יא וַיַּעֲמֹ֥ד לַמֶּ֖לֶךְ עַל־הַדָּ֑רֶךְ וַיִּתְחַפֵּ֥שׂ בָּאֲפֵ֖ר עַל־עֵינָֽיו׃

39
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֤y hamּe֨leke֙ 'obe֔r veh֖u tza'a֣q 'el-hamּe֑leke vayּo֜'mer 'abedּeka֣ ׀ yatza֣ beqeֽreb-hamּilechama֗h vehinּeֽh-'i֨yshsh sa֜r vayּabe֧ 'ela֣y 'i֗yshsh vayּo֨'mer֙ shshemor֙ 'et-ha'i֣yshsh hazּe֔h 'im-hipּaqed֙ yipּaqe֔d vehayeta֤h napeshsheka֙ tּa֣chat napeshsh֔o '֥o kikּar-kּe֖sep tּishsheqֽol׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As the king passed by, the prophet called out to him, 'Your servant went into the thick of the battle, and someone came to me with a captive and said, "Guard this man. If he is missing, it will be your life for his life, or you must pay a talent of silver."'

וַיְהִ֤י הַמֶּ֨לֶךְ֙ עֹבֵ֔ר וְה֖וּא צָעַ֣ק אֶל־הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ וַיֹּ֜אמֶר עַבְדְּךָ֣ ׀ יָצָ֣א בְקֶֽרֶב־הַמִּלְחָמָ֗ה וְהִנֵּֽה־אִ֨ישׁ סָ֜ר וַיָּבֵ֧א אֵלַ֣י אִ֗ישׁ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ שְׁמֹר֙ אֶת־הָאִ֣ישׁ הַזֶּ֔ה אִם־הִפָּקֵד֙ יִפָּקֵ֔ד וְהָיְתָ֤ה נַפְשְׁךָ֙ תַּ֣חַת נַפְשׁ֔וֹ א֥וֹ כִכַּר־כֶּ֖סֶף תִּשְׁקֽוֹל׃

40
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y 'abedּeka֗ 'oshse֥h he֛nּah vahe֖nּah veh֣u 'eyne֑nּu vayּo֨'mer 'ela֧yv meֽleke-yishsera'e֛l kּe֥n mishshepּate֖ka 'atּa֥h charaֽtzetּa׃
Edified Edition (EDE)'While your servant was busy here and there, the man disappeared.' 'That is your sentence,' the king of Israel said. 'You have pronounced it yourself.'

וַיְהִ֣י עַבְדְּךָ֗ עֹשֵׂ֥ה הֵ֛נָּה וָהֵ֖נָּה וְה֣וּא אֵינֶ֑נּוּ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֧יו מֶֽלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל כֵּ֥ן מִשְׁפָּטֶ֖ךָ אַתָּ֥ה חָרָֽצְתָּ׃

41
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayemahe֕r vayּa֨sar֙ 'et-ha֣'ape֔r m'l me'ale֖y 'eyna֑yv vayּakּe֤r 'oto֙ me֣leke yishsera'e֔l kּi֥y meֽhanּebi'i֖ym hֽu'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the prophet quickly removed the headband from his eyes, and the king of Israel recognised him as one of the prophets.

וַיְמַהֵ֕ר וַיָּ֨סַר֙ אֶת־הָ֣אֲפֵ֔ר מעל מֵעֲלֵ֖י עֵינָ֑יו וַיַּכֵּ֤ר אֹתוֹ֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כִּ֥י מֵֽהַנְּבִאִ֖ים הֽוּא׃

42
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'ela֗yv kּo֚h 'ama֣r yehva֔h ya֛'an shshilּa֥chetּa 'et-'iyshsh-cheremi֖y miyּa֑d vehayeta֤h napeshsheka֙ tּa֣chat napeshsh֔o ve'amּeka֖ tּa֥chat 'amּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He said to the king, 'This is what the LORD says: "You have set free a man I had determined should die. Therefore it is your life for his life, your people for his people."'

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֗יו כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה יַ֛עַן שִׁלַּ֥חְתָּ אֶת־אִישׁ־חֶרְמִ֖י מִיָּ֑ד וְהָיְתָ֤ה נַפְשְׁךָ֙ תַּ֣חַת נַפְשׁ֔וֹ וְעַמְּךָ֖ תַּ֥חַת עַמּֽוֹ׃

43
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֧leke meֽleke-yishsera'e֛l 'al-bּeyt֖o sa֣r veza'e֑p vayּabo֖ shshomerֽonah׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Sullen and angry, the king of Israel went to his palace in Samaria.

וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ מֶֽלֶךְ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל עַל־בֵּית֖וֹ סַ֣ר וְזָעֵ֑ף וַיָּבֹ֖א שֹׁמְרֽוֹנָה׃פ
