Chapter 4

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyehiy֙ hamּe֣leke shshelomo֔h me֖leke 'al-kּal-yishsera'eֽl׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)So King Solomon was king over all Israel.

וַֽיְהִי֙ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה מֶ֖לֶךְ עַל־כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֥lּeh hashsּari֖ym 'ashsher-l֑o 'azareya֥hu ben-tzad֖oq hakּoheֽn׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)And these were his chief officials: Azariah son of Zadok was the priest;

וְאֵ֥לֶּה הַשָּׂרִ֖ים אֲשֶׁר־ל֑וֹ עֲזַרְיָ֥הוּ בֶן־צָד֖וֹק הַכֹּהֵֽן׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): eliycho֧rep va'achiyּa֛h bּene֥y shshiyshsha֖ soperi֑ym yehoshshapa֥t bּen-'achiyl֖ud hamּazekּiֽyr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Elihoreph and Ahijah, sons of Shisha, were secretaries; Jehoshaphat son of Ahilud was recorder;

אֱלִיחֹ֧רֶף וַאֲחִיָּ֛ה בְּנֵ֥י שִׁישָׁ֖א סֹפְרִ֑ים יְהוֹשָׁפָ֥ט בֶּן־אֲחִיל֖וּד הַמַּזְכִּֽיר׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubenaya֥hu ben-yehoyada֖ 'al-hatzּaba֑ vetzad֥oq ve'ebeyata֖r kּohaniֽym׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Benaiah son of Jehoiada was in charge of the army; Zadok and Abiathar were priests;

וּבְנָיָ֥הוּ בֶן־יְהוֹיָדָ֖ע עַל־הַצָּבָ֑א וְצָד֥וֹק וְאֶבְיָתָ֖ר כֹּהֲנִֽים׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'azareya֥hu ben-nata֖n 'al-hanּitzּabi֑ym vezab֧ud bּen-nata֛n kּohe֖n re'e֥h hamּeֽleke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Azariah son of Nathan was in charge of the district governors; Zabud son of Nathan was a priest and the king’s personal adviser;

וַעֲזַרְיָ֥הוּ בֶן־נָתָ֖ן עַל־הַנִּצָּבִ֑ים וְזָב֧וּד בֶּן־נָתָ֛ן כֹּהֵ֖ן רֵעֶ֥ה הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'achiyshsha֖r 'al-habּa֑yit va'adoniyra֥m bּen-'abedּa֖ 'al-hamּaֽs׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Ahishar was in charge of the palace; and Adoniram son of Abda was in charge of forced labour.

וַאֲחִישָׁ֖ר עַל־הַבָּ֑יִת וַאֲדֹנִירָ֥ם בֶּן־עַבְדָּ֖א עַל־הַמַּֽס׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): velishshelomo֞h shsheneym-'ashsa֤r nitzּabiym֙ 'al-kּal-yishsera'e֔l vekilekּel֥u 'et-hamּe֖leke ve'et-bּeyt֑o cho֧deshsh bּashshּana֛h yiheye֥h 'al-'chd ha'echa֖d lekalekּeֽl׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Solomon had twelve district governors over all Israel, who provided supplies for the king and the royal household. Each one had to provide supplies for one month in the year.

וְלִשְׁלֹמֹ֞ה שְׁנֵים־עָשָׂ֤ר נִצָּבִים֙ עַל־כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְכִלְכְּל֥וּ אֶת־הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ וְאֶת־בֵּית֑וֹ חֹ֧דֶשׁ בַּשָּׁנָ֛ה יִהְיֶ֥ה עַל־אחד הָאֶחָ֖ד לְכַלְכֵּֽל׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֣lּeh shshemota֔m bּen-ch֖ur bּeha֥r 'eperaֽyim׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)These were their names: Ben-Hur in the hill country of Ephraim;

וְאֵ֣לֶּה שְׁמוֹתָ֔ם בֶּן־ח֖וּר בְּהַ֥ר אֶפְרָֽיִם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּen-dּe֛qer bּemaqa֥tz ubeshshaֽ'alebi֖ym ube֣yt shsha֑meshsh ve'eyl֖on bּe֥yt chanaֽn׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Ben-Deker in Makaz, Shaalbim, Beth Shemesh and Elon Bethhanan;

בֶּן־דֶּ֛קֶר בְּמָקַ֥ץ וּבְשַֽׁעַלְבִ֖ים וּבֵ֣ית שָׁ֑מֶשׁ וְאֵיל֖וֹן בֵּ֥ית חָנָֽן׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּen-che֖sed bּaֽ'arubּ֑ot l֥o shsoko֖h vekal-'e֥retz cheֽper׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Ben-Hesed in Arubboth (Sokoh and all the land of Hepher were his);

בֶּן־חֶ֖סֶד בָּֽאֲרֻבּ֑וֹת ל֥וֹ שֹׂכֹ֖ה וְכָל־אֶ֥רֶץ חֵֽפֶר׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּen-'abiֽynada֖b kּal-na֣pat dּo֑'r tapat֙ bּat-shshelomo֔h ha֥yetah lּ֖o le'ishshּaֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Ben-Abinadab in Naphoth Dor (he was married to Taphath daughter of Solomon);

בֶּן־אֲבִֽינָדָ֖ב כָּל־נָ֣פַת דֹּ֑אר טָפַת֙ בַּת־שְׁלֹמֹ֔ה הָ֥יְתָה לּ֖וֹ לְאִשָּֽׁה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּaֽ'ana'֙ bּen-'achiyl֔ud tּa'ena֖ke umegidּ֑o vekal-bּe֣yt shshe'a֡n 'ashsher֩ 'e֨tzel tzareta֜nah mitּa֣chat leyizere'e֗'l mibּe֤yt shshe'an֙ 'a֚d 'abe֣l mechola֔h 'a֖d me'e֥ber leyaqemo'aֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Baana son of Ahilud in Taanach and Megiddo, and in all of Beth Shan next to Zarethan below Jezreel, from Beth Shan to Abel Meholah across to Jokmeam;

בַּֽעֲנָא֙ בֶּן־אֲחִיל֔וּד תַּעְנַ֖ךְ וּמְגִדּ֑וֹ וְכָל־בֵּ֣ית שְׁאָ֡ן אֲשֶׁר֩ אֵ֨צֶל צָרְתַ֜נָה מִתַּ֣חַת לְיִזְרְעֶ֗אל מִבֵּ֤ית שְׁאָן֙ עַ֚ד אָבֵ֣ל מְחוֹלָ֔ה עַ֖ד מֵעֵ֥בֶר לְיָקְמֳעָֽם׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): bּen-gּe֖ber bּeramo֣t gּile'a֑d l֡o chauot֩ ya'i֨yr bּen-menashshּe֜h 'ashshe֣r bּagּile'a֗d l֚o che֤bel 'aregּob֙ 'ashshe֣r bּabּashsha֔n shshishshּiym֙ 'ari֣ym gּedol֔ot choma֖h uberi֥ycha nechoֽshshet׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Ben-Geber in Ramoth Gilead (the settlements of Jair son of Manasseh in Gilead were his, as well as the region of Argob in Bashan and its sixty large walled cities with bronze gate bars);

בֶּן־גֶּ֖בֶר בְּרָמֹ֣ת גִּלְעָ֑ד ל֡וֹ חַוֺּת֩ יָאִ֨יר בֶּן־מְנַשֶּׁ֜ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּגִּלְעָ֗ד ל֚וֹ חֶ֤בֶל אַרְגֹּב֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּבָּשָׁ֔ן שִׁשִּׁים֙ עָרִ֣ים גְּדֹל֔וֹת חוֹמָ֖ה וּבְרִ֥יחַ נְחֹֽשֶׁת׃ס

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): achiֽynada֥b bּen-'idּo֖ machanaֽyemah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Ahinadab son of Iddo in Mahanaim;

אֲחִֽינָדָ֥ב בֶּן־עִדֹּ֖א מַחֲנָֽיְמָה׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): achiyma֖'atz bּenapetּali֑y gּam-h֗u laqa֛ch 'et-bּashsema֥t bּat-shshelomo֖h le'ishshּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Ahimaaz in Naphtali (he had married Basemath daughter of Solomon);

אֲחִימַ֖עַץ בְּנַפְתָּלִ֑י גַּם־ה֗וּא לָקַ֛ח אֶת־בָּשְׂמַ֥ת בַּת־שְׁלֹמֹ֖ה לְאִשָּֽׁה׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּaֽ'ana'֙ bּen-chushsha֔y bּe'ashshe֖r ube'alֽot׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Baana son of Hushai in Asher and in Aloth;

בַּֽעֲנָא֙ בֶּן־חוּשָׁ֔י בְּאָשֵׁ֖ר וּבְעָלֽוֹת׃ס

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): yehoshshapa֥t bּen-pּar֖ucha bּeyishsashkaֽr׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Jehoshaphat son of Paruah in Issachar;

יְהוֹשָׁפָ֥ט בֶּן־פָּר֖וּחַ בְּיִשָׂשכָֽר׃ס

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): shshime'i֥y ben-'ela֖ bּebineyamiֽn׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Shimei son of Ela in Benjamin;

שִׁמְעִ֥י בֶן־אֵלָ֖א בְּבִנְיָמִֽן׃ס

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): gּe֥ber bּen-'uri֖y bּe'e֣retz gּile'a֑d 'e֜retz siych֣on ׀ me֣leke ha'emori֗y ve'og֙ me֣leke habּashsha֔n unetzi֥yb 'echa֖d 'ashshe֥r bּa'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Geber son of Uri in Gilead (the country of Sihon king of the Amorites and Og king of Bashan). He was the only governor over the district.

גֶּ֥בֶר בֶּן־אֻרִ֖י בְּאֶ֣רֶץ גִּלְעָ֑ד אֶ֜רֶץ סִיח֣וֹן ׀ מֶ֣לֶךְ הָאֱמֹרִ֗י וְעֹג֙ מֶ֣לֶךְ הַבָּשָׁ֔ן וּנְצִ֥יב אֶחָ֖ד אֲשֶׁ֥ר בָּאָֽרֶץ׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): yehuda֤h veyishsera'el֙ rabּi֔ym kּach֥ol 'ashsher-'al-hayּa֖m laro֑b 'okeli֥ym veshshoti֖ym ushsemechiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The people of Judah and Israel were as numerous as the sand on the seashore; they ate, they drank and they were happy.

יְהוּדָ֤ה וְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙ רַבִּ֔ים כַּח֥וֹל אֲשֶׁר־עַל־הַיָּ֖ם לָרֹ֑ב אֹכְלִ֥ים וְשֹׁתִ֖ים וּשְׂמֵחִֽים׃
