Chapter 14
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y hayּ֗om vayּo֨'mer yonata֤n bּen-shsha'ul֙ 'el-hanּa֨'ar֙ noshse֣ kela֔yv leka֗h vena'ebּerah֙ 'el-matzּa֣b pּelishshetּi֔ym 'ashshe֖r me'e֣ber halּa֑z ule'abi֖yv lo֥ higּiֽyd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)One day Jonathan son of Saul said to his young armour-bearer, "Come, let’s go over to the Philistine outpost on the other side." But he did not tell his father.

וַיְהִ֣י הַיּ֗וֹם וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יוֹנָתָ֤ן בֶּן־שָׁאוּל֙ אֶל־הַנַּ֨עַר֙ נֹשֵׂ֣א כֵלָ֔יו לְכָ֗ה וְנַעְבְּרָה֙ אֶל־מַצַּ֣ב פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר מֵעֵ֣בֶר הַלָּ֑ז וּלְאָבִ֖יו לֹ֥א הִגִּֽיד׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): veshsha'֗ul yoshsheb֙ bּiqetze֣h hagּibe'a֔h tּa֥chat harimּ֖on 'ashshe֣r bּemiger֑on veha'am֙ 'ashshe֣r 'imּ֔o kּeshshe֥shsh me'֖ot 'iֽyshsh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Saul was staying on the outskirts of Gibeah under a pomegranate tree in Migron. With him were about six hundred men,

וְשָׁא֗וּל יוֹשֵׁב֙ בִּקְצֵ֣ה הַגִּבְעָ֔ה תַּ֥חַת הָרִמּ֖וֹן אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּמִגְר֑וֹן וְהָעָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עִמּ֔וֹ כְּשֵׁ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת אִֽישׁ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): va'achiyּa֣h ben-'achit֡ub 'achi֡y 'iykab֣od ׀ bּen-pּiynecha֨s bּen-'eli֜y kּohe֧n ׀ yehva֛h bּeshshil֖o noshse֣ 'ep֑od veha'am֙ lo֣ yada֔ kּi֥y hala֖ke yonataֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)including Ahijah, who was wearing an ephod. He was a son of Ichabod’s brother Ahitub son of Phinehas, the son of Eli, the LORD’s priest in Shiloh. No one was aware that Jonathan had left.

וַאֲחִיָּ֣ה בֶן־אֲחִט֡וּב אֲחִ֡י אִיכָב֣וֹד ׀ בֶּן־פִּינְחָ֨ס בֶּן־עֵלִ֜י כֹּהֵ֧ן ׀ יְהוָ֛ה בְּשִׁל֖וֹ נֹשֵׂ֣א אֵפ֑וֹד וְהָעָם֙ לֹ֣א יָדַ֔ע כִּ֥י הָלַ֖ךְ יוֹנָתָֽן׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): ube֣yn haֽmּa'ebּer֗ot 'ashshe֨r bּiqּe֤shsh yֽonatan֙ laֽ'abor֙ 'al-matzּa֣b pּelishshetּi֔ym shshen-hasּe֤la meha'e֨ber֙ mizּe֔h veshshen-hasּe֥la meha'e֖ber mizּe֑h veshshe֤m haֽ'echad֙ bּotze֔tz veshshe֥m ha'echa֖d seֽnּeh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)On each side of the pass that Jonathan intended to cross to reach the Philistine outpost was a rocky cliff; one was called Bozez and the other Seneh.

וּבֵ֣ין הַֽמַּעְבְּר֗וֹת אֲשֶׁ֨ר בִּקֵּ֤שׁ יֽוֹנָתָן֙ לַֽעֲבֹר֙ עַל־מַצַּ֣ב פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים שֵׁן־הַסֶּ֤לַע מֵהָעֵ֨בֶר֙ מִזֶּ֔ה וְשֵׁן־הַסֶּ֥לַע מֵהָעֵ֖בֶר מִזֶּ֑ה וְשֵׁ֤ם הָֽאֶחָד֙ בּוֹצֵ֔ץ וְשֵׁ֥ם הָאֶחָ֖ד סֶֽנֶּה׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): hashshּe֧n ha'echa֛d matz֥uq mitzּap֖on m֣ul mikema֑shs veha'echa֥d minּe֖geb m֥ul gּaֽba'׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)One cliff stood to the north toward Mikmash, the other to the south toward Geba.

הַשֵּׁ֧ן הָאֶחָ֛ד מָצ֥וּק מִצָּפ֖וֹן מ֣וּל מִכְמָ֑שׂ וְהָאֶחָ֥ד מִנֶּ֖גֶב מ֥וּל גָּֽבַע׃ס

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer yehonata֜n 'el-hanּa֣'ar ׀ noshse֣ kela֗yv lekah֙ vena'ebּera֗h 'el-matzּab֙ ha'areli֣ym ha'e֔lּeh 'ula֛y ya'ashse֥h yehva֖h la֑nu kּi֣y 'e֤yn laֽyhvah֙ ma'etz֔or lehoshshi֥y'a bּera֖b '֥o bime'aֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jonathan said to his young armour-bearer, "Come, let’s go over to the outpost of those uncircumcised men. Perhaps the LORD will act on our behalf. Nothing can hinder the LORD from saving, whether by many or by few."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוֹנָתָ֜ן אֶל־הַנַּ֣עַר ׀ נֹשֵׂ֣א כֵלָ֗יו לְכָה֙ וְנַעְבְּרָ֗ה אֶל־מַצַּב֙ הָעֲרֵלִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה אוּלַ֛י יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה יְהוָ֖ה לָ֑נוּ כִּ֣י אֵ֤ין לַֽיהוָה֙ מַעְצ֔וֹר לְהוֹשִׁ֥יעַ בְּרַ֖ב א֥וֹ בִמְעָֽט׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer lo֙ noshse֣ kela֔yv 'ashse֖h kּal-'ashshe֣r bּilebabe֑ka nete֣h la֔ke hineni֥y 'imּeka֖ kּilebabeֽka׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)"Do all that you have in mind," his armour-bearer said. "Go ahead; I am with you heart and soul."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ נֹשֵׂ֣א כֵלָ֔יו עֲשֵׂ֖ה כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֣ר בִּלְבָבֶ֑ךָ נְטֵ֣ה לָ֔ךְ הִנְנִ֥י עִמְּךָ֖ כִּלְבָבֶֽךָ׃ס

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer֙ yeh֣onata֔n hinּe֛h 'ana֥chenu 'oberi֖ym 'el-ha'anashshi֑ym venigeli֖ynu 'aleyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jonathan said, "Come on, then; we will cross over toward them and let them see us.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן הִנֵּ֛ה אֲנַ֥חְנוּ עֹבְרִ֖ים אֶל־הָאֲנָשִׁ֑ים וְנִגְלִ֖ינוּ אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-kּo֤h yoֽ'meru֙ 'ele֔ynu dּo֕mּu 'ad-hagּiy'e֖nu 'aleyke֑m ve'ama֣denu tachetּe֔ynu velo֥ na'ale֖h 'aleyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If they say to us, 'Wait there until we come to you,' we will stay where we are and not go up to them.

אִם־כֹּ֤ה יֹֽאמְרוּ֙ אֵלֵ֔ינוּ דֹּ֕מּוּ עַד־הַגִּיעֵ֖נוּ אֲלֵיכֶ֑ם וְעָמַ֣דְנוּ תַחְתֵּ֔ינוּ וְלֹ֥א נַעֲלֶ֖ה אֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'im-kּo֨h yo'mer֜u 'al֤u 'ale֨ynu֙ ve'ali֔ynu kּiֽy-netana֥m yehva֖h bּeyade֑nu vezeh-lּa֖nu ha'ֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But if they say, 'Come up to us,' we will climb up, because that will be our sign that the LORD has given them into our hands."

וְאִם־כֹּ֨ה יֹאמְר֜וּ עֲל֤וּ עָלֵ֨ינוּ֙ וְעָלִ֔ינוּ כִּֽי־נְתָנָ֥ם יְהוָ֖ה בְּיָדֵ֑נוּ וְזֶה־לָּ֖נוּ הָאֽוֹת׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּigּal֣u shsheneyhe֔m 'el-matzּa֖b pּelishshetּi֑ym vayּo'mer֣u pelishshetּi֔ym hinּe֤h 'iberiym֙ yoֽtze'i֔ym min-hachori֖ym 'ashshe֥r hitechabּe'u-shshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So both of them showed themselves to the Philistine outpost. "Look!" said the Philistines. "The Hebrews are crawling out of the holes they were hiding in."

וַיִּגָּל֣וּ שְׁנֵיהֶ֔ם אֶל־מַצַּ֖ב פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים הִנֵּ֤ה עִבְרִים֙ יֹֽצְאִ֔ים מִן־הַחֹרִ֖ים אֲשֶׁ֥ר הִתְחַבְּאוּ־שָֽׁם׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'anu֩ 'aneshshe֨y hamּatzּaba֜h 'et-yonata֣n ׀ ve'et-noshse֣ kela֗yv vayּoֽ'meru֙ 'al֣u 'ele֔ynu venodi֥y'ah 'eteke֖m dּaba֑r p vayּo֨'mer yonata֜n 'el-noshse֤ kelayv֙ 'ale֣h 'achara֔y kּiֽy-netana֥m yehva֖h bּeya֥d yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The men of the outpost shouted to Jonathan and his armour-bearer, "Come up to us and we’ll teach you a lesson." So Jonathan said to his armour-bearer, "Climb up after me; the LORD has given them into the hands of Israel."

וַיַּעֲנוּ֩ אַנְשֵׁ֨י הַמַּצָּבָ֜ה אֶת־יוֹנָתָ֣ן ׀ וְאֶת־נֹשֵׂ֣א כֵלָ֗יו וַיֹּֽאמְרוּ֙ עֲל֣וּ אֵלֵ֔ינוּ וְנוֹדִ֥יעָה אֶתְכֶ֖ם דָּבָ֑ר פ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יוֹנָתָ֜ן אֶל־נֹשֵׂ֤א כֵלָיו֙ עֲלֵ֣ה אַחֲרַ֔י כִּֽי־נְתָנָ֥ם יְהוָ֖ה בְּיַ֥ד יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣'al yonata֗n 'al-yadayv֙ ve'al-ragela֔yv venoshse֥ kela֖yv 'achara֑yv vaֽyּipּelu֙ lipene֣y yonata֔n venoshse֥ kela֖yv memote֥t 'acharaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jonathan climbed up, using his hands and feet, with his armour-bearer right behind him. The Philistines fell before Jonathan, and his armour-bearer followed and killed them.

וַיַּ֣עַל יוֹנָתָ֗ן עַל־יָדָיו֙ וְעַל־רַגְלָ֔יו וְנֹשֵׂ֥א כֵלָ֖יו אַחֲרָ֑יו וַֽיִּפְּלוּ֙ לִפְנֵ֣י יוֹנָתָ֔ן וְנֹשֵׂ֥א כֵלָ֖יו מְמוֹתֵ֥ת אַחֲרָֽיו׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּehi֞y hamּakּa֣h hari'shshona֗h 'ashshe֨r hikּa֧h yonata֛n venoshse֥ kela֖yv kּe'eshseri֣ym 'i֑yshsh kּebachatzi֥y ma'ana֖h tze֥med shsadeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)In that first attack Jonathan and his armour-bearer killed some twenty men in an area of about half an acre.

וַתְּהִ֞י הַמַּכָּ֣ה הָרִאשֹׁנָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר הִכָּ֧ה יוֹנָתָ֛ן וְנֹשֵׂ֥א כֵלָ֖יו כְּעֶשְׂרִ֣ים אִ֑ישׁ כְּבַחֲצִ֥י מַעֲנָ֖ה צֶ֥מֶד שָׂדֶֽה׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּehiy֩ charada֨h bamּachane֤h bashsּadeh֙ ubekal-ha'a֔m hamּatzּab֙ vehamּashshechi֔yt chared֖u gּam-he֑mּah vatּiregּa֣z ha'a֔retz vatּehi֖y lecheredּa֥t 'elohiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then panic struck the whole army, those in the camp and field, and those in the outposts and raiding parties, and the ground shook. It was a panic sent by God.

וַתְּהִי֩ חֲרָדָ֨ה בַמַּחֲנֶ֤ה בַשָּׂדֶה֙ וּבְכָל־הָעָ֔ם הַמַּצָּב֙ וְהַמַּשְׁחִ֔ית חָרְד֖וּ גַּם־הֵ֑מָּה וַתִּרְגַּ֣ז הָאָ֔רֶץ וַתְּהִ֖י לְחֶרְדַּ֥ת אֱלֹהִֽים׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּire'֤u hatzּopiym֙ leshsha'֔ul bּegibe'a֖t bּineyami֑n vehinּe֧h heham֛on nam֖og vayּe֥leke vahaloֽm׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Saul’s lookouts at Gibeah in Benjamin saw the army scattering in all directions.

וַיִּרְא֤וּ הַצֹּפִים֙ לְשָׁא֔וּל בְּגִבְעַ֖ת בִּנְיָמִ֑ן וְהִנֵּ֧ה הֶהָמ֛וֹן נָמ֖וֹג וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ וַהֲלֹֽם׃פ

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer shsha'֗ul la'am֙ 'ashshe֣r 'itּ֔o pּiqedu-na֣ ure'֔u mi֖y hala֣ke me'imּa֑nu vaֽyּipeqed֔u vehinּe֛h 'e֥yn yonata֖n venoshse֥ kelaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Saul said to the men who were with him, "Muster the forces and see who has left us." When they did, it was Jonathan and his armour-bearer who were not there.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שָׁא֗וּל לָעָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתּ֔וֹ פִּקְדוּ־נָ֣א וּרְא֔וּ מִ֖י הָלַ֣ךְ מֵעִמָּ֑נוּ וַֽיִּפְקְד֔וּ וְהִנֵּ֛ה אֵ֥ין יוֹנָתָ֖ן וְנֹשֵׂ֥א כֵלָֽיו׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer shsha'ul֙ laֽ'achiyּa֔h hagּi֖yshshah 'ar֣on ha'elohi֑ym kּiֽy-haya֞h 'ar֧on ha'elohi֛ym bּayּ֥om hah֖u ubene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Saul said to Ahijah, "Bring the ark of God." (At that time it was with the Israelites.)

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שָׁאוּל֙ לַֽאֲחִיָּ֔ה הַגִּ֖ישָׁה אֲר֣וֹן הָאֱלֹהִ֑ים כִּֽי־הָיָ֞ה אֲר֧וֹן הָאֱלֹהִ֛ים בַּיּ֥וֹם הַה֖וּא וּבְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y 'a֣d dּibּe֤r shsha'ul֙ 'el-hakּohe֔n veheham֗on 'ashsher֙ bּemachane֣h pelishshetּi֔ym vayּe֥leke hal֖oke vara֑b p vayּo֧'mer shsha'֛ul 'el-hakּohe֖n 'eso֥p yadeֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)While Saul was talking to the priest, the tumult in the Philistine camp increased more and more. So Saul said to the priest, "Withdraw your hand."

וַיְהִ֗י עַ֣ד דִּבֶּ֤ר שָׁאוּל֙ אֶל־הַכֹּהֵ֔ן וְהֶהָמ֗וֹן אֲשֶׁר֙ בְּמַחֲנֵ֣ה פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ הָל֖וֹךְ וָרָ֑ב פ וַיֹּ֧אמֶר שָׁא֛וּל אֶל־הַכֹּהֵ֖ן אֱסֹ֥ף יָדֶֽךָ׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּizּa'e֣q shsha'֗ul vekal-ha'am֙ 'ashshe֣r 'itּ֔o vayּabo֖'u 'ad-hamּilechama֑h vehinּe֨h hayeta֜h che֤reb 'iyshsh֙ bּere'e֔hu mehuma֖h gּedola֥h me'oֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Saul and all his men assembled and went to the battle. They found the Philistines in total confusion, striking each other with their swords.

וַיִּזָּעֵ֣ק שָׁא֗וּל וְכָל־הָעָם֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אִתּ֔וֹ וַיָּבֹ֖אוּ עַד־הַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה וְהִנֵּ֨ה הָיְתָ֜ה חֶ֤רֶב אִישׁ֙ בְּרֵעֵ֔הוּ מְהוּמָ֖ה גְּדוֹלָ֥ה מְאֹֽד׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): veha'iberi֗ym hay֤u lapּelishshetּiym֙ kּe'etem֣ol shshileshsh֔om 'ashshe֨r 'al֥u 'imּa֛m bּaֽmּachane֖h sabi֑yb vegam-he֗mּah liֽheyot֙ 'im-yishsera'e֔l 'ashshe֥r 'im-shsha'֖ul veyonataֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Those Hebrews who had previously been with the Philistines and had gone up with them to their camp went over to the Israelites who were with Saul and Jonathan.

וְהָעִבְרִ֗ים הָי֤וּ לַפְּלִשְׁתִּים֙ כְּאֶתְמ֣וֹל שִׁלְשׁ֔וֹם אֲשֶׁ֨ר עָל֥וּ עִמָּ֛ם בַּֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה סָבִ֑יב וְגַם־הֵ֗מָּה לִֽהְיוֹת֙ עִם־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר עִם־שָׁא֖וּל וְיוֹנָתָֽן׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vekol֩ 'i֨yshsh yishsera'e֜l hamּiֽtechabּe'i֤ym bּehar-'epera֨yim֙ shshaֽme'֔u kּiֽy-na֖su pּelishshetּi֑ym vaֽyּadebּeq֥u gam-he֛mּah 'achareyhe֖m bּamּilechamaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When all the Israelites who had hidden in the hill country of Ephraim heard that the Philistines were on the run, they joined the battle in hot pursuit.

וְכֹל֩ אִ֨ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֜ל הַמִּֽתְחַבְּאִ֤ים בְּהַר־אֶפְרַ֨יִם֙ שָֽׁמְע֔וּ כִּֽי־נָ֖סוּ פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַֽיַּדְבְּק֥וּ גַם־הֵ֛מָּה אַחֲרֵיהֶ֖ם בַּמִּלְחָמָֽה׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּ֧oshsha yehva֛h bּayּ֥om hah֖u 'et-yishsera'e֑l veha֨mּilechama֔h 'abera֖h 'et-bּe֥yt 'aֽven׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So the LORD saved Israel that day, and the battle moved on beyond Beth Aven.

וַיּ֧וֹשַׁע יְהוָ֛ה בַּיּ֥וֹם הַה֖וּא אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְהַ֨מִּלְחָמָ֔ה עָבְרָ֖ה אֶת־בֵּ֥ית אָֽוֶן׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'iֽyshsh-yishsera'e֥l nigּa֖shs bּayּ֣om hah֑u vayּo'el֩ shsha'֨ul 'et-ha'a֜m le'mo֗r 'ar֣ur ha֠'iyshsh 'ashsher-yo֨'kal le֜chem 'ad-ha'e֗reb veniqּametּiy֙ me'o֣yeba֔y veloֽ ta'a֥m kּal-ha'a֖m laֽchem׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Now the Israelites were in distress that day, because Saul had bound the people under an oath, saying, "Cursed be anyone who eats food before evening comes, before I have avenged myself on my enemies!" So none of the troops tasted food.

וְאִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל נִגַּ֖שׂ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֑וּא וַיֹּאֶל֩ שָׁא֨וּל אֶת־הָעָ֜ם לֵאמֹ֗ר אָר֣וּר הָ֠אִישׁ אֲשֶׁר־יֹ֨אכַל לֶ֜חֶם עַד־הָעֶ֗רֶב וְנִקַּמְתִּי֙ מֵאֹ֣יְבַ֔י וְלֹֽא טָעַ֥ם כָּל־הָעָ֖ם לָֽחֶם׃ס

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vekal-ha'a֖retz bּa֣'u bayּa֑'ar vayehi֥y deba֖shsh 'al-pּene֥y hashsּadeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The entire army entered some woods, and there was honey on the ground.

וְכָל־הָאָ֖רֶץ בָּ֣אוּ בַיָּ֑עַר וַיְהִ֥י דְבַ֖שׁ עַל־פְּנֵ֥י הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֤ ha'am֙ 'el-hayּa֔'ar vehinּe֖h he֣leke dּeba֑shsh ve'eyn-mashsּi֤yg yado֙ 'el-pּi֔yv kּiֽy-yare֥ ha'a֖m 'et-hashshּebu'aֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When they went into the woods, they saw the honey oozing out; yet no one put his hand to his mouth, because they feared the oath.

Edified Edition (EDE)But Jonathan had not heard that his father had bound the people with the oath, so he reached out the end of the staff that was in his hand and dipped it into the honeycomb. He raised his hand to his mouth, and his eyes brightened.

וְיוֹנָתָ֣ן לֹֽא־שָׁמַ֗ע בְּהַשְׁבִּ֣יעַ אָבִיו֮ אֶת־הָעָם֒ וַיִּשְׁלַ֗ח אֶת־קְצֵ֤ה הַמַּטֶּה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בְּיָד֔וֹ וַיִּטְבֹּ֥ל אוֹתָ֖הּ בְּיַעְרַ֣ת הַדְּבָ֑שׁ וַיָּ֤שֶׁב יָדוֹ֙ אֶל־פִּ֔יו ותראנה וַתָּאֹ֖רְנָה עֵינָֽיו׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then one of the soldiers told him, "Your father bound the army under a strict oath, saying, 'Cursed be anyone who eats food today!' That is why the men are faint."

וַיַּעַן֩ אִ֨ישׁ מֵֽהָעָ֜ם וַיֹּ֗אמֶר הַשְׁבֵּעַ֩ הִשְׁבִּ֨יעַ אָבִ֤יךָ אֶת־הָעָם֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אָר֥וּר הָאִ֛ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־יֹ֥אכַל לֶ֖חֶם הַיּ֑וֹם וַיָּ֖עַף הָעָֽם׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Jonathan said, "My father has made trouble for the country. See how my eyes brightened when I tasted a little of this honey.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ יֽוֹנָתָ֔ן עָכַ֥ר אָבִ֖י אֶת־הָאָ֑רֶץ רְאוּ־נָא֙ כִּֽי־אֹ֣רוּ עֵינַ֔י כִּ֣י טָעַ֔מְתִּי מְעַ֖ט דְּבַ֥שׁ הַזֶּֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): a֗p kּi֡y lu'֩ 'ako֨l 'aka֤l hayּom֙ ha'a֔m mishshּela֥l 'oyeba֖yv 'ashshe֣r matza֑ kּi֥y 'atּa֛h loֽ'-rabeta֥h makּa֖h bּapּelishshetּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)How much better it would have been if the men had eaten today some of the plunder they took from their enemies. Would not the slaughter of the Philistines have been even greater?"

אַ֗ף כִּ֡י לוּא֩ אָכֹ֨ל אָכַ֤ל הַיּוֹם֙ הָעָ֔ם מִשְּׁלַ֥ל אֹיְבָ֖יו אֲשֶׁ֣ר מָצָ֑א כִּ֥י עַתָּ֛ה לֹֽא־רָבְתָ֥ה מַכָּ֖ה בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃

Edified Edition (EDE)That day, after the Israelites had struck down the Philistines from Mikmash to Aijalon, they were exhausted.

וַיַּכּ֞וּ בַּיּ֤וֹם הַהוּא֙ בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים מִמִּכְמָ֖שׂ אַיָּלֹ֑נָה וַיָּ֥עַף הָעָ֖ם מְאֹֽד׃

32
Phonetic (Hebrew): vy'sh vayּa֤'at ha'am֙ 'el-shll hashshּala֔l vayּiqech֨u tzo֧'n ubaqa֛r ubene֥y baqa֖r vayּishshechatu-'a֑retzah vayּo֥'kal ha'a֖m 'al-hadּaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They pounced on the plunder and, taking sheep, cattle and calves, they butchered them on the ground and ate them together with the blood.

ויעש וַיַּ֤עַט הָעָם֙ אֶל־שלל הַשָּׁלָ֔ל וַיִּקְח֨וּ צֹ֧אן וּבָקָ֛ר וּבְנֵ֥י בָקָ֖ר וַיִּשְׁחֲטוּ־אָ֑רְצָה וַיֹּ֥אכַל הָעָ֖ם עַל־הַדָּֽם׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then someone said to Saul, "Look, the men are sinning against the LORD by eating meat that has blood in it." "You have broken faith," he said. "Roll a large stone over here at once."

וַיַּגִּ֤ידוּ לְשָׁאוּל֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הִנֵּ֥ה הָעָ֛ם חֹטִ֥אים לַֽיהוָ֖ה לֶאֱכֹ֣ל עַל־הַדָּ֑ם וַיֹּ֣אמֶר בְּגַדְתֶּ֔ם גֹּֽלּוּ־אֵלַ֥י הַיּ֖וֹם אֶ֥בֶן גְּדוֹלָֽה׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then he said, "Go out among the men and tell them, 'Each of you bring me your ox or sheep, and slaughter it here and eat it. Do not sin against the LORD by eating meat with blood still in it.'" So everyone brought his ox that night and slaughtered it there.

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Saul built an altar to the LORD; it was the first time he had done so.

וַיִּ֧בֶן שָׁא֛וּל מִזְבֵּ֖חַ לַֽיהוָ֑ה אֹת֣וֹ הֵחֵ֔ל לִבְנ֥וֹת מִזְבֵּ֖חַ לַֽיהוָֽה׃פ

Edified Edition (EDE)Saul said, "Let us go down and pursue the Philistines by night and plunder them till dawn, and let us not leave one of them alive." "Do whatever seems best to you," they replied. But the priest said, "Let us inquire of God here."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שָׁא֡וּל נֵרְדָ֣ה אַחֲרֵי֩ פְלִשְׁתִּ֨ים ׀ לַ֜יְלָה וְֽנָבֹ֥זָה בָהֶ֣ם ׀ עַד־א֣וֹר הַבֹּ֗קֶר וְלֹֽא־נַשְׁאֵ֤ר בָּהֶם֙ אִ֔ישׁ וַיֹּ֣אמְר֔וּ כָּל־הַטּ֥וֹב בְּעֵינֶ֖יךָ עֲשֵׂ֑ה ס וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ הַכֹּהֵ֔ן נִקְרְבָ֥ה הֲלֹ֖ם אֶל־הָאֱלֹהִֽים׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So Saul asked God, "Shall I go down and pursue the Philistines? Will you give them into Israel’s hand?" But God did not answer him that day.

וַיִּשְׁאַ֤ל שָׁאוּל֙ בֵּֽאלֹהִ֔ים הַֽאֵרֵד֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים הֲתִתְּנֵ֖ם בְּיַ֣ד יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְלֹ֥א עָנָ֖הוּ בַּיּ֥וֹם הַהֽוּא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer shsha'֔ul gּo֣shshֽu halo֔m kּo֖l pּinּ֣ot ha'a֑m ude'֣u ure'֔u bּamּa֗h haֽyeta֛h hachatּa֥'t hazּo֖'t hayּֽom׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Saul therefore said, "Come here, all you who are leaders of the army, and let us find out what sin has been committed today.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שָׁא֔וּל גֹּ֣שֽׁוּ הֲלֹ֔ם כֹּ֖ל פִּנּ֣וֹת הָעָ֑ם וּדְע֣וּ וּרְא֔וּ בַּמָּ֗ה הָֽיְתָ֛ה הַחַטָּ֥את הַזֹּ֖את הַיּֽוֹם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֣y chay-yehva֗h hamּoshshi֨y'a֙ 'et-yishsera'e֔l kּi֧y 'im-yeshshen֛o bּeyonata֥n bּeni֖y kּi֣y m֣ot yam֑ut ve'e֥yn 'one֖hu mikּal-ha'aֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As surely as the LORD who rescues Israel lives, even if it lies with my son Jonathan, he must die." But not one of them said a word.

כִּ֣י חַי־יְהוָ֗ה הַמּוֹשִׁ֨יעַ֙ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כִּ֧י אִם־יֶשְׁנ֛וֹ בְּיוֹנָתָ֥ן בְּנִ֖י כִּ֣י מ֣וֹת יָמ֑וּת וְאֵ֥ין עֹנֵ֖הוּ מִכָּל־הָעָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer 'el-kּal-yishsera'e֗l 'atּem֙ tּiֽheyu֙ le'e֣ber 'echa֔d vaֽ'aniy֙ veyonata֣n bּeni֔y niheye֖h le'e֣ber 'echa֑d vayּo'mer֤u ha'am֙ 'el-shsha'֔ul hatּ֥ob bּe'eyne֖yka 'ashseֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Saul then said to all the Israelites, "You stand over there; I and Jonathan my son will stand over here." "Do what seems best to you," the people replied.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֶל־כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל אַתֶּם֙ תִּֽהְיוּ֙ לְעֵ֣בֶר אֶחָ֔ד וַֽאֲנִי֙ וְיוֹנָתָ֣ן בְּנִ֔י נִהְיֶ֖ה לְעֵ֣בֶר אֶחָ֑ד וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ הָעָם֙ אֶל־שָׁא֔וּל הַטּ֥וֹב בְּעֵינֶ֖יךָ עֲשֵֽׂה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer shsha'֗ul 'el-yehva֛h 'elohe֥y yishsera'e֖l ha֣bah tami֑ym vayּilּake֧d yonata֛n veshsha'֖ul veha'a֥m yatzaֽ'u׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Saul prayed to the LORD, the God of Israel, "Why have you not answered your servant today? If the fault is in me or my son Jonathan, respond with Urim, but if the fault is in your people Israel, respond with Thummim." Jonathan and Saul were taken by lot, and the people were cleared.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שָׁא֗וּל אֶל־יְהוָ֛ה אֱלֹהֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הָ֣בָה תָמִ֑ים וַיִּלָּכֵ֧ד יוֹנָתָ֛ן וְשָׁא֖וּל וְהָעָ֥ם יָצָֽאוּ׃

42
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer shsha'֔ul hapּi֕ylu bּeyni֕y ube֖yn yonata֣n bּeni֑y vayּilּake֖d yonataֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Saul said, "Cast the lot between me and Jonathan my son." And Jonathan was taken.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שָׁא֔וּל הַפִּ֕ילוּ בֵּינִ֕י וּבֵ֖ין יוֹנָתָ֣ן בְּנִ֑י וַיִּלָּכֵ֖ד יוֹנָתָֽן׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Saul said to Jonathan, "Tell me what you have done." So Jonathan told him, "I tasted a little honey with the end of my staff. And now I must die!"

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שָׁאוּל֙ אֶל־י֣וֹנָתָ֔ן הַגִּ֥ידָה לִּ֖י מֶ֣ה עָשִׂ֑יתָה וַיַּגֶּד־ל֣וֹ יוֹנָתָ֗ן וַיֹּאמֶר֩ טָעֹ֨ם טָעַ֜מְתִּי בִּקְצֵ֨ה הַמַּטֶּ֧ה אֲשֶׁר־בְּיָדִ֛י מְעַ֥ט דְּבַ֖שׁ הִנְנִ֥י אָמֽוּת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer shsha'֔ul kּoֽh-ya'ashse֥h 'elohi֖ym veko֣h yosi֑p kּiֽy-m֥ot tּam֖ut yonataֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Saul said, "May God deal with me, be it ever so severely, if you do not die, Jonathan."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שָׁא֔וּל כֹּֽה־יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה אֱלֹהִ֖ים וְכֹ֣ה יוֹסִ֑ף כִּֽי־מ֥וֹת תָּמ֖וּת יוֹנָתָֽן׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer ha'a֜m 'el-shsha'֗ul haֽyonata֤n ׀ yamut֙ 'ashshe֣r 'a֠shsah hayeshshu'a֨h hagּedola֣h hazּo't֮ bּeyishsera'el֒ chali֗ylah chay-yehvah֙ 'im-yipּo֞l mishsּa'ara֤t ro'shsho֙ 'a֔retzah kּiֽy-'im-'elohi֥ym 'ashsa֖h hayּ֣om hazּe֑h vayּipedּ֥u ha'a֛m 'et-yonata֖n velo'-meֽt׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)But the men said to Saul, "Should Jonathan die, he who has brought about this great deliverance in Israel? Never! As surely as the LORD lives, not a hair of his head shall fall to the ground, for he did this today with God’s help." So the men rescued Jonathan, and he was not put to death.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר הָעָ֜ם אֶל־שָׁא֗וּל הֲֽיוֹנָתָ֤ן ׀ יָמוּת֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר עָ֠שָׂה הַיְשׁוּעָ֨ה הַגְּדוֹלָ֣ה הַזֹּאת֮ בְּיִשְׂרָאֵל֒ חָלִ֗ילָה חַי־יְהוָה֙ אִם־יִפֹּ֞ל מִשַּׂעֲרַ֤ת רֹאשׁוֹ֙ אַ֔רְצָה כִּֽי־עִם־אֱלֹהִ֥ים עָשָׂ֖ה הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה וַיִּפְדּ֥וּ הָעָ֛ם אֶת־יוֹנָתָ֖ן וְלֹא־מֵֽת׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣'al shsha'֔ul me'achare֖y pּelishshetּi֑ym upelishshetּi֖ym halek֥u limeqomaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Saul stopped pursuing the Philistines, and they withdrew to their own land.

וַיַּ֣עַל שָׁא֔וּל מֵאַחֲרֵ֖י פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים הָלְכ֥וּ לִמְקוֹמָֽם׃

47
Phonetic (Hebrew): veshsha'֛ul laka֥d hamּeluka֖h 'al-yishsera'e֑l vayּilּa֣chem sabi֣yb ׀ bּeֽkal-'oyeba֡yv bּemo'a֣b ׀ ubibeney-'amּ֨on ube'ed֜om ubemaleke֤y tzobah֙ ubapּelishshetּi֔ym ubeko֥l 'ashsher-yipene֖h yareshshiֽy'a׃
Edified Edition (EDE)After Saul had assumed rule over Israel, he fought against their enemies on every side: Moab, the Ammonites, Edom, the kings of Zobah, and the Philistines. Wherever he turned, he inflicted punishment on them.

וְשָׁא֛וּל לָכַ֥ד הַמְּלוּכָ֖ה עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיִּלָּ֣חֶם סָבִ֣יב ׀ בְּֽכָל־אֹיְבָ֡יו בְּמוֹאָ֣ב ׀ וּבִבְנֵי־עַמּ֨וֹן וּבֶאֱד֜וֹם וּבְמַלְכֵ֤י צוֹבָה֙ וּבַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וּבְכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־יִפְנֶ֖ה יַרְשִֽׁיעַ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣'ashs cha֔yil vayּa֖ke 'et-'amale֑q vayּatzּe֥l 'et-yishsera'e֖l miyּa֥d shshoseֽhu׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)He fought valiantly and defeated the Amalekites, delivering Israel from the hands of those who had carried off their plunder.

וַיַּ֣עַשׂ חַ֔יִל וַיַּ֖ךְ אֶת־עֲמָלֵ֑ק וַיַּצֵּ֥ל אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מִיַּ֥ד שֹׁסֵֽהוּ׃ס

Edified Edition (EDE)Saul’s sons were Jonathan, Ishvi and Malki-Shua. The names of his two daughters were Merab, the older, and Michal, the younger.

וַיִּֽהְיוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י שָׁא֔וּל יוֹנָתָ֥ן וְיִשְׁוִ֖י וּמַלְכִּי־שׁ֑וּעַ וְשֵׁם֙ שְׁתֵּ֣י בְנֹתָ֔יו שֵׁ֤ם הַבְּכִירָה֙ מֵרַ֔ב וְשֵׁ֥ם הַקְּטַנָּ֖ה מִיכַֽל׃

Edified Edition (EDE)His wife’s name was Ahinoam daughter of Ahimaaz. The name of the commander of Saul’s army was Abner son of Ner, and Ner was Saul’s uncle.

וְשֵׁם֙ אֵ֣שֶׁת שָׁא֔וּל אֲחִינֹ֖עַם בַּת־אֲחִימָ֑עַץ וְשֵׁ֤ם שַׂר־צְבָאוֹ֙ אֲבִינֵ֔ר בֶּן־נֵ֖ר דּ֥וֹד שָׁאֽוּל׃

Edified Edition (EDE)All the days of Saul there was bitter war with the Philistines, and whenever Saul saw a mighty or brave man, he took him into his service.

וַתְּהִ֤י הַמִּלְחָמָה֙ חֲזָקָ֣ה עַל־פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים כֹּ֖ל יְמֵ֣י שָׁא֑וּל וְרָאָ֨ה שָׁא֜וּל כָּל־אִ֤ישׁ גִּבּוֹר֙ וְכָל־בֶּן־חַ֔יִל וַיַּאַסְפֵ֖הוּ אֵלָֽיו׃ס
