Chapter 17
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'asep֨u pelishshetּi֤ym 'et-maֽchaneyhem֙ lamּilechama֔h vayּe'a֣sep֔u shsoko֖h 'ashshe֣r liyhuda֑h vaֽyּachan֛u bּeyn-shsoko֥h ubeyn-'azeqa֖h bּe'e֥pes dּamּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now the Philistines gathered their forces for war and assembled at Sokoh in Judah. They pitched camp at Ephes Dammim, between Sokoh and Azekah.

וַיַּאַסְפ֨וּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֤ים אֶת־מַֽחֲנֵיהֶם֙ לַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה וַיֵּאָ֣סְפ֔וּ שֹׂכֹ֖ה אֲשֶׁ֣ר לִיהוּדָ֑ה וַֽיַּחֲנ֛וּ בֵּין־שׂוֹכֹ֥ה וּבֵין־עֲזֵקָ֖ה בְּאֶ֥פֶס דַּמִּֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veshsha'֤ul ve'iֽyshsh-yishsera'el֙ ne'esep֔u vaֽyּachan֖u bּe'e֣meq ha'ela֑h vayּa'arek֥u milechama֖h liqera֥'t pּelishshetּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Saul and the Israelites assembled and camped in the Valley of Elah and drew up their battle line to meet the Philistines.

וְשָׁא֤וּל וְאִֽישׁ־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ נֶאֶסְפ֔וּ וַֽיַּחֲנ֖וּ בְּעֵ֣מֶק הָאֵלָ֑ה וַיַּעַרְכ֥וּ מִלְחָמָ֖ה לִקְרַ֥את פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): upelishshetּi֞ym 'omedi֤ym 'el-hahar֙ mizּe֔h veyishsera'e֛l 'omedi֥ym 'el-haha֖r mizּe֑h vehagּa֖ye bּeyneyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The Philistines occupied one hill and the Israelites another, with the valley between them.

וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֞ים עֹמְדִ֤ים אֶל־הָהָר֙ מִזֶּ֔ה וְיִשְׂרָאֵ֛ל עֹמְדִ֥ים אֶל־הָהָ֖ר מִזֶּ֑ה וְהַגַּ֖יְא בֵּינֵיהֶֽם׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze֤ 'iֽyshsh-habּena֨yim֙ mimּachan֣ot pּelishshetּi֔ym gּaleya֥t shshem֖o migּa֑t gּabeh֕o shshe֥shsh 'amּ֖ot vazaֽret׃
Edified Edition (EDE)A champion named Goliath, who was from Gath, came out of the Philistine camp. His height was six cubits and a span.

וַיֵּצֵ֤א אִֽישׁ־הַבֵּנַ֨יִם֙ מִמַּחֲנ֣וֹת פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים גָּלְיָ֥ת שְׁמ֖וֹ מִגַּ֑ת גָּבְה֕וֹ שֵׁ֥שׁ אַמּ֖וֹת וָזָֽרֶת׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vek֤oba necho֨shshet֙ 'al-ro'shsh֔o veshshirey֥on qashseqashsּi֖ym h֣u lab֑ushsh umishsheqal֙ hashshּirey֔on chameshshet-'alapi֥ym shsheqali֖ym nechoֽshsheֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He had a bronze helmet on his head and wore a coat of scale armour of bronze weighing five thousand shekels;

וְכ֤וֹבַע נְחֹ֨שֶׁת֙ עַל־רֹאשׁ֔וֹ וְשִׁרְי֥וֹן קַשְׂקַשִּׂ֖ים ה֣וּא לָב֑וּשׁ וּמִשְׁקַל֙ הַשִּׁרְי֔וֹן חֲמֵשֶׁת־אֲלָפִ֥ים שְׁקָלִ֖ים נְחֹֽשֶֽׁת׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): umitzecha֥t necho֖shshet 'al-ragela֑yv vekiyd֥on necho֖shshet bּe֥yn kּetepaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)on his legs he wore bronze greaves, and a bronze javelin was slung on his back.

וּמִצְחַ֥ת נְחֹ֖שֶׁת עַל־רַגְלָ֑יו וְכִיד֥וֹן נְחֹ֖שֶׁת בֵּ֥ין כְּתֵפָֽיו׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vchtz ve'e֣tz chaniyt֗o kּimenor֙ 'oֽregi֔ym velahe֣bet chaniyt֔o shsheshsh-me'֥ot shsheqali֖ym bּareze֑l venoshse֥ hatzּinּa֖h hole֥ke lepanaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)His spear shaft was like a weaver’s rod, and its iron point weighed six hundred shekels. His shield-bearer went ahead of him.

וחץ וְעֵ֣ץ חֲנִית֗וֹ כִּמְנוֹר֙ אֹֽרְגִ֔ים וְלַהֶ֣בֶת חֲנִית֔וֹ שֵׁשׁ־מֵא֥וֹת שְׁקָלִ֖ים בַּרְזֶ֑ל וְנֹשֵׂ֥א הַצִּנָּ֖ה הֹלֵ֥ךְ לְפָנָֽיו׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyּa'amo֗d vayּiqera'֙ 'el-ma'areko֣t yishsera'e֔l vayּo֣'mer lahe֔m la֥mּah tetze'֖u la'aro֣ke milechama֑h hal֧o 'anoki֣y hapּelishshetּi֗y ve'atּem֙ 'abadi֣ym leshsha'֔ul bּeru-lake֥m 'i֖yshsh veyere֥d 'elaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Goliath stood and shouted to the ranks of Israel, "Why do you come out and line up for battle? Am I not a Philistine, and are you not the servants of Saul? Choose a man and have him come down to me.

וַֽיַּעֲמֹ֗ד וַיִּקְרָא֙ אֶל־מַעַרְכֹ֣ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֔ם לָ֥מָּה תֵצְא֖וּ לַעֲרֹ֣ךְ מִלְחָמָ֑ה הֲל֧וֹא אָנֹכִ֣י הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֗י וְאַתֶּם֙ עֲבָדִ֣ים לְשָׁא֔וּל בְּרוּ־לָכֶ֥ם אִ֖ישׁ וְיֵרֵ֥ד אֵלָֽי׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-yuka֞l lehilּache֤m 'itּiy֙ vehikּa֔niy vehayi֥ynu lake֖m la'abadi֑ym ve'im-'ani֤y 'ֽukal-lo֙ vehikּiyti֔yv viheyi֤ytem la֨nu֙ la'abadi֔ym va'abadetּe֖m 'otaֽnu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If he is able to fight and kill me, we will become your subjects; but if I overcome him and kill him, you will become our subjects and serve us."

אִם־יוּכַ֞ל לְהִלָּחֵ֤ם אִתִּי֙ וְהִכָּ֔נִי וְהָיִ֥ינוּ לָכֶ֖ם לַעֲבָדִ֑ים וְאִם־אֲנִ֤י אֽוּכַל־לוֹ֙ וְהִכִּיתִ֔יו וִהְיִ֤יתֶם לָ֨נוּ֙ לַעֲבָדִ֔ים וַעֲבַדְתֶּ֖ם אֹתָֽנוּ׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer֙ hapּelishshetּi֔y 'ani֗y chera֛petּiy 'et-ma'arek֥ot yishsera'e֖l hayּ֣om hazּe֑h tּenu-li֣y 'i֔yshsh veniֽlּachama֖h yaֽchad׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the Philistine said, "This day I defy the armies of Israel! Give me a man and let us fight each other."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔י אֲנִ֗י חֵרַ֛פְתִּי אֶת־מַעַרְכ֥וֹת יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֑ה תְּנוּ־לִ֣י אִ֔ישׁ וְנִֽלָּחֲמָ֖ה יָֽחַד׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshema֤ shsha'ul֙ vekal-yishsera'e֔l 'et-dּibere֥y hapּelishshetּi֖y ha'e֑lּeh vayּecha֥tּu vayּiֽre'֖u me'oֽd׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)On hearing the Philistine’s words, Saul and all the Israelites were dismayed and terrified.

וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע שָׁאוּל֙ וְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֶת־דִּבְרֵ֥י הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖י הָאֵ֑לֶּה וַיֵּחַ֥תּוּ וַיִּֽרְא֖וּ מְאֹֽד׃פ

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vedavid֩ bּen-'i֨yshsh 'eperati֜y hazּe֗h mibּe֥yt le֨chem֙ yehuda֔h ushshem֣o yishsha֔y vel֖o shshemona֣h bani֑ym veha'iyshsh֙ bּiyme֣y shsha'֔ul zaqe֖n bּa֥ ba'anashshiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now David was the son of an Ephrathite named Jesse, who was from Bethlehem in Judah. Jesse had eight sons, and in Saul’s time he was very old.

וְדָוִד֩ בֶּן־אִ֨ישׁ אֶפְרָתִ֜י הַזֶּ֗ה מִבֵּ֥ית לֶ֨חֶם֙ יְהוּדָ֔ה וּשְׁמ֣וֹ יִשַׁ֔י וְל֖וֹ שְׁמֹנָ֣ה בָנִ֑ים וְהָאִישׁ֙ בִּימֵ֣י שָׁא֔וּל זָקֵ֖ן בָּ֥א בַאֲנָשִֽׁים׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֨lek֜u shshelo֤shshet bּeneֽy-yishshay֙ hagּedoli֔ym halek֥u 'acharey-shsha'֖ul lamּilechama֑h veshshe֣m ׀ shshelo֣shshet bּana֗yv 'ashshe֤r haleku֙ bּamּilechama֔h 'eliy'a֣b habּek֗or umishshene֨hu֙ 'abi֣ynada֔b vehashshּelishshi֖y shshamּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jesse’s three oldest sons had followed Saul to the war: The firstborn was Eliab; the second, Abinadab; and the third, Shammah.

וַיֵּ֨לְכ֜וּ שְׁלֹ֤שֶׁת בְּנֵֽי־יִשַׁי֙ הַגְּדֹלִ֔ים הָלְכ֥וּ אַחֲרֵי־שָׁא֖וּל לַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה וְשֵׁ֣ם ׀ שְׁלֹ֣שֶׁת בָּנָ֗יו אֲשֶׁ֤ר הָלְכוּ֙ בַּמִּלְחָמָ֔ה אֱלִיאָ֣ב הַבְּכ֗וֹר וּמִשְׁנֵ֨הוּ֙ אֲבִ֣ינָדָ֔ב וְהַשְּׁלִשִׁ֖י שַׁמָּֽה׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vedavi֖d h֣u haqּata֑n ushsheloshshah֙ hagּedoli֔ym halek֖u 'achare֥y shsha'ֽul׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)David was the youngest. The three oldest followed Saul,

וְדָוִ֖ד ה֣וּא הַקָּטָ֑ן וּשְׁלֹשָׁה֙ הַגְּדֹלִ֔ים הָלְכ֖וּ אַחֲרֵ֥י שָׁאֽוּל׃ס

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vedavi֛d hole֥ke vashsha֖b me'a֣l shsha'֑ul lire'֛ot 'et-tzo֥'n 'abi֖yv bּeֽyt-laֽchem׃
Edified Edition (EDE)but David went back and forth from Saul to tend his father’s sheep at Bethlehem.

וְדָוִ֛ד הֹלֵ֥ךְ וָשָׁ֖ב מֵעַ֣ל שָׁא֑וּל לִרְע֛וֹת אֶת־צֹ֥אן אָבִ֖יו בֵּֽית־לָֽחֶם׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּigּa֥shsh hapּelishshetּi֖y hashshekּe֣m veha'are֑b vayּiteyatzּe֖b 'arebּa'i֥ym yֽom׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)For forty days the Philistine came forward every morning and evening and took his stand.

וַיִּגַּ֥שׁ הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖י הַשְׁכֵּ֣ם וְהַעֲרֵ֑ב וַיִּתְיַצֵּ֖ב אַרְבָּעִ֥ים יֽוֹם׃פ

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer yishsha֜y ledavi֣d bּen֗o qach-na֤ le'ache֨yka֙ 'eypa֤t haqּaliy'֙ hazּe֔h va'ashsara֥h le֖chem hazּe֑h vehare֥tz haֽmּachane֖h le'acheֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Jesse said to his son David, "Take this ephah of roasted grain and these ten loaves of bread for your brothers and hurry to their camp.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יִשַׁ֜י לְדָוִ֣ד בְּנ֗וֹ קַח־נָ֤א לְאַחֶ֨יךָ֙ אֵיפַ֤ת הַקָּלִיא֙ הַזֶּ֔ה וַעֲשָׂרָ֥ה לֶ֖חֶם הַזֶּ֑ה וְהָרֵ֥ץ הַֽמַּחֲנֶ֖ה לְאַחֶֽיךָ׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve֠'et 'ashse֜ret charitze֤y heֽchalab֙ ha'e֔lּeh tּabi֖y leshsar-ha'a֑lep ve'et-'ache֨yka֙ tּipeqo֣d leshshal֔om ve'et-'arubּata֖m tּiqּaֽch׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Take along these ten cheeses to the commander of their unit. See how your brothers are and bring back some token from them.

וְ֠אֵת עֲשֶׂ֜רֶת חֲרִצֵ֤י הֶֽחָלָב֙ הָאֵ֔לֶּה תָּבִ֖יא לְשַׂר־הָאָ֑לֶף וְאֶת־אַחֶ֨יךָ֙ תִּפְקֹ֣ד לְשָׁל֔וֹם וְאֶת־עֲרֻבָּתָ֖ם תִּקָּֽח׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): veshsha'֤ul vehe֨mּah֙ vekal-'i֣yshsh yishsera'e֔l bּe'e֖meq haֽ'ela֑h nilechami֖ym 'im-pּelishshetּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They are with Saul and all the men of Israel in the Valley of Elah, fighting against the Philistines."

וְשָׁא֤וּל וְהֵ֨מָּה֙ וְכָל־אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בְּעֵ֖מֶק הָֽאֵלָ֑ה נִלְחָמִ֖ים עִם־פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashshekּe֨m dּavi֜d bּabּo֗qer vayּitּo֤shsh 'et-hatzּo'n֙ 'al-shshome֔r vayּishsּa֣ vayּe֔leke kּa'ashshe֥r tziua֖hu yishsha֑y vayּabo'֙ hamּa'egּa֔lah vehacha֗yil hayּotze'֙ 'el-hamּa֣'araka֔h vehere֖'u bּamּilechamaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Early in the morning David left the sheep with a shepherd, loaded up and set out, as Jesse had directed. He reached the camp as the army was going out to its battle positions, shouting the war cry.

וַיַּשְׁכֵּ֨ם דָּוִ֜ד בַּבֹּ֗קֶר וַיִּטֹּ֤שׁ אֶת־הַצֹּאן֙ עַל־שֹׁמֵ֔ר וַיִּשָּׂ֣א וַיֵּ֔לֶךְ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוָּ֖הוּ יִשָׁ֑י וַיָּבֹא֙ הַמַּעְגָּ֔לָה וְהַחַ֗יִל הַיֹּצֵא֙ אֶל־הַמַּ֣עֲרָכָ֔ה וְהֵרֵ֖עוּ בַּמִּלְחָמָֽה׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּa'aro֤ke yishsera'el֙ upelishshetּi֔ym ma'araka֖h liqera֥'t ma'arakaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Israel and the Philistines were drawing up their lines facing each other.

וַתַּעֲרֹ֤ךְ יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֔ים מַעֲרָכָ֖ה לִקְרַ֥את מַעֲרָכָֽה׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּitּoshsh֩ dּavi֨d 'et-hakּeli֜ym me'ala֗yv 'al-yad֙ shshome֣r hakּeli֔ym vayּa֖ratz hamּa'araka֑h vayּabo֕ vayּishshe'a֥l le'echa֖yv leshshalֽom׃
Edified Edition (EDE)David left his things with the keeper of supplies, ran to the battle lines and asked his brothers how they were.

וַיִּטֹּשׁ֩ דָּוִ֨ד אֶת־הַכֵּלִ֜ים מֵעָלָ֗יו עַל־יַד֙ שׁוֹמֵ֣ר הַכֵּלִ֔ים וַיָּ֖רָץ הַמַּעֲרָכָ֑ה וַיָּבֹ֕א וַיִּשְׁאַ֥ל לְאֶחָ֖יו לְשָׁלֽוֹם׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): veh֣u ׀ medabּe֣r 'imּa֗m vehinּe֣h 'i֣yshsh habּena֡yim 'ole֞h gּaleyat֩ hapּelishshetּi֨y shshem֤o migּat֙ mm'rvt mimּa'arek֣ot pּelishshetּi֔ym vayedabּe֖r kּadּebari֣ym ha'e֑lּeh vayּishshema֖ dּaviֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As he was talking with them, Goliath, the Philistine champion from Gath, stepped out from his lines and shouted his usual defiance, and David heard it.

וְה֣וּא ׀ מְדַבֵּ֣ר עִמָּ֗ם וְהִנֵּ֣ה אִ֣ישׁ הַבֵּנַ֡יִם עוֹלֶ֞ה גָּלְיָת֩ הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֨י שְׁמ֤וֹ מִגַּת֙ ממערות מִמַּעַרְכ֣וֹת פְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וַיְדַבֵּ֖ר כַּדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה וַיִּשְׁמַ֖ע דָּוִֽד׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): vekol֙ 'i֣yshsh yishsera'e֔l bּire'ota֖m 'et-ha'i֑yshsh vayּanu֨su֙ mipּana֔yv vayּiֽyre'֖u me'oֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Whenever the Israelites saw the man, they all fled from him in great fear.

וְכֹל֙ אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל בִּרְאוֹתָ֖ם אֶת־הָאִ֑ישׁ וַיָּנֻ֨סוּ֙ מִפָּנָ֔יו וַיִּֽירְא֖וּ מְאֹֽד׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer ׀ 'i֣yshsh yishsera'e֗l harּe'iytem֙ ha'i֤yshsh haֽ'oleh֙ hazּe֔h kּi֛y lechare֥p 'et-yishsera'e֖l 'ole֑h veֽ֠hayah ha'i֨yshsh 'ashsher-yakּe֜nּu ya'eshshere֥nּu hamּe֣leke ׀ 'o֣shsher gּad֗ol ve'et-bּitּo֙ yitּen-l֔o ve'et֙ bּe֣yt 'abi֔yv ya'ashse֥h chapeshshi֖y bּeyishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now the Israelites had been saying, "Do you see how this man keeps coming out? He comes out to defy Israel. The king will give great wealth to the man who kills him. He will also give him his daughter in marriage and will exempt his family from taxes in Israel."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ׀ אִ֣ישׁ יִשְׂרָאֵ֗ל הַרְּאִיתֶם֙ הָאִ֤ישׁ הָֽעֹלֶה֙ הַזֶּ֔ה כִּ֛י לְחָרֵ֥ף אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל עֹלֶ֑ה וְֽ֠הָיָה הָאִ֨ישׁ אֲשֶׁר־יַכֶּ֜נּוּ יַעְשְׁרֶ֥נּוּ הַמֶּ֣לֶךְ ׀ עֹ֣שֶׁר גָּד֗וֹל וְאֶת־בִּתּוֹ֙ יִתֶּן־ל֔וֹ וְאֵת֙ בֵּ֣ית אָבִ֔יו יַעֲשֶׂ֥ה חָפְשִׁ֖י בְּיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer dּavi֗d 'eֽl-ha'anashshi֞ym ha'omedi֣ym 'imּo֮ le'mor֒ mah-yּe'ashse֗h la'iyshsh֙ 'ashshe֤r yakּeh֙ 'et-hapּelishshetּi֣y halּa֔z vehesi֥yr cherepּa֖h me'a֣l yishsera'e֑l kּi֣y mi֗y hapּelishshetּi֤y heֽ'arel֙ hazּe֔h kּi֣y chere֔p ma'arek֖ot 'elohi֥ym chayּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)David asked the men standing near him, "What will be done for the man who kills this Philistine and removes this disgrace from Israel? Who is this uncircumcised Philistine that he should defy the armies of the living God?"

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר דָּוִ֗ד אֶֽל־הָאֲנָשִׁ֞ים הָעֹמְדִ֣ים עִמּוֹ֮ לֵאמֹר֒ מַה־יֵּעָשֶׂ֗ה לָאִישׁ֙ אֲשֶׁ֤ר יַכֶּה֙ אֶת־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֣י הַלָּ֔ז וְהֵסִ֥יר חֶרְפָּ֖ה מֵעַ֣ל יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל כִּ֣י מִ֗י הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֤י הֶֽעָרֵל֙ הַזֶּ֔ה כִּ֣י חֵרֵ֔ף מַעַרְכ֖וֹת אֱלֹהִ֥ים חַיִּֽים׃

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer lo֙ ha'a֔m kּadּaba֥r hazּe֖h le'mo֑r kּo֣h ye'ashse֔h la'i֖yshsh 'ashshe֥r yakּeֽnּu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They repeated to him what they had been saying and told him, "That is what will be done for the man who kills him."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר לוֹ֙ הָעָ֔ם כַּדָּבָ֥ר הַזֶּ֖ה לֵאמֹ֑ר כֹּ֣ה יֵעָשֶׂ֔ה לָאִ֖ישׁ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יַכֶּֽנּוּ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When Eliab, David’s oldest brother, heard him speaking with the men, he burned with anger at him and asked, "Why have you come down here? And with whom did you leave those few sheep in the wilderness? I know how conceited you are and how wicked your heart is; you came down only to watch the battle."

וַיִּשְׁמַ֤ע אֱלִיאָב֙ אָחִ֣יו הַגָּד֔וֹל בְּדַבְּר֖וֹ אֶל־הָאֲנָשִׁ֑ים וַיִּֽחַר־אַף֩ אֱלִיאָ֨ב בְּדָוִ֜ד וַיֹּ֣אמֶר ׀ לָמָּה־זֶּ֣ה יָרַ֗דְתָּ וְעַל־מִ֨י נָטַ֜שְׁתָּ מְעַ֨ט הַצֹּ֤אן הָהֵ֨נָּה֙ בַּמִּדְבָּ֔ר אֲנִ֧י יָדַ֣עְתִּי אֶת־זְדֹנְךָ֗ וְאֵת֙ רֹ֣עַ לְבָבֶ֔ךָ כִּ֗י לְמַ֛עַן רְא֥וֹת הַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה יָרָֽדְתָּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer dּavi֔d me֥h 'ashsi֖ytiy 'a֑tּah hal֖o dּaba֥r hֽu'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Now what have I done?" said David. "Can’t I even speak?"

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר דָּוִ֔ד מֶ֥ה עָשִׂ֖יתִי עָ֑תָּה הֲל֖וֹא דָּבָ֥ר הֽוּא׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּisּo֤b meֽ'etzelo֙ 'el-m֣ul 'ache֔r vayּo֖'mer kּadּaba֣r hazּe֑h vayeshshibu֤hu ha'am֙ dּaba֔r kּadּaba֖r hari'shshֽon׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He then turned away to someone else and brought up the same matter, and the men answered him as before.

וַיִּסֹּ֤ב מֵֽאֶצְלוֹ֙ אֶל־מ֣וּל אַחֵ֔ר וַיֹּ֖אמֶר כַּדָּבָ֣ר הַזֶּ֑ה וַיְשִׁבֻ֤הוּ הָעָם֙ דָּבָ֔ר כַּדָּבָ֖ר הָרִאשֽׁוֹן׃

Edified Edition (EDE)What David said was overheard and reported to Saul, and Saul sent for him.

וַיְּשָּֽׁמְעוּ֙ הַדְּבָרִ֔ים אֲשֶׁ֖ר דִּבֶּ֣ר דָּוִ֑ד וַיַּגִּ֥דוּ לִפְנֵֽי־שָׁא֖וּל וַיִּקָּחֵֽהוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer dּavid֙ 'el-shsha'֔ul 'al-yipּo֥l leb-'ada֖m 'ala֑yv 'abedּeka֣ yele֔ke venilecha֖m 'im-hapּelishshetּi֥y hazּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)David said to Saul, "Let no one lose heart on account of this Philistine; your servant will go and fight him."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר דָּוִד֙ אֶל־שָׁא֔וּל אַל־יִפֹּ֥ל לֵב־אָדָ֖ם עָלָ֑יו עַבְדְּךָ֣ יֵלֵ֔ךְ וְנִלְחַ֖ם עִם־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֥י הַזֶּֽה׃

33
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer shsha'֜ul 'el-dּavi֗d lo֤ tukal֙ lale֨ket֙ 'el-hapּelishshetּi֣y hazּe֔h lehilּache֖m 'imּ֑o kּiֽy-na֣'ar 'a֔tּah veh֛u 'i֥yshsh milechama֖h minּe'uraֽyv׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Saul replied, "You are not able to go out against this Philistine and fight him; you are only a young man, and he has been a warrior from his youth."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר שָׁא֜וּל אֶל־דָּוִ֗ד לֹ֤א תוּכַל֙ לָלֶ֨כֶת֙ אֶל־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֣י הַזֶּ֔ה לְהִלָּחֵ֖ם עִמּ֑וֹ כִּֽי־נַ֣עַר אַ֔תָּה וְה֛וּא אִ֥ישׁ מִלְחָמָ֖ה מִנְּעֻרָֽיו׃ס

Edified Edition (EDE)But David said to Saul, "Your servant has been tending his father’s sheep. When a lion or a bear came and carried off a sheep from the flock,

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר דָּוִד֙ אֶל־שָׁא֔וּל רֹעֶ֨ה הָיָ֧ה עַבְדְּךָ֛ לְאָבִ֖יו בַּצֹּ֑אן וּבָ֤א הָֽאֲרִי֙ וְאֶת־הַדּ֔וֹב וְנָשָׂ֥א שֶׂ֖ה מֵהָעֵֽדֶר׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): veyatza֧'tiy 'achara֛yv vehikּiti֖yv vehitzּa֣letּiy mipּi֑yv vayּa֣qam 'ala֔y vehecheza֨qetּiy֙ bּizeqan֔o vehikּiti֖yv vahamiytּiֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)I went after it, struck it and rescued the sheep from its mouth. When it turned on me, I seized it by its hair, struck it and killed it.

וְיָצָ֧אתִי אַחֲרָ֛יו וְהִכִּתִ֖יו וְהִצַּ֣לְתִּי מִפִּ֑יו וַיָּ֣קָם עָלַ֔י וְהֶחֱזַ֨קְתִּי֙ בִּזְקָנ֔וֹ וְהִכִּתִ֖יו וַהֲמִיתִּֽיו׃

36
Phonetic (Hebrew): gּa֧m 'eֽt-ha'ari֛y gּam-hadּ֖ob hikּa֣h 'abedּe֑ka veֽ֠hayah hapּelishshetּi֨y he'are֤l hazּeh֙ kּe'acha֣d mehe֔m kּi֣y chere֔p ma'areko֖t 'elohi֥ym chayּiֽym׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Your servant has killed both the lion and the bear; this uncircumcised Philistine will be like one of them, because he has defied the armies of the living God.

גַּ֧ם אֶֽת־הָאֲרִ֛י גַּם־הַדּ֖וֹב הִכָּ֣ה עַבְדֶּ֑ךָ וְֽ֠הָיָה הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֨י הֶעָרֵ֤ל הַזֶּה֙ כְּאַחַ֣ד מֵהֶ֔ם כִּ֣י חֵרֵ֔ף מַעַרְכֹ֖ת אֱלֹהִ֥ים חַיִּֽים׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֮ dּavid֒ yehva֗h 'ashshe֨r hitzּila֜niy miyּa֤d haֽ'ariy֙ umiyּa֣d hadּo֔b h֣u yatzּiyle֔niy miyּa֥d hapּelishshetּi֖y hazּe֑h s vayּo֨'mer shsha'֤ul 'el-dּavid֙ le֔ke vaֽyhva֖h yiheye֥h 'imּaֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine." Saul said to David, "Go, and the LORD be with you."

וַיֹּאמֶר֮ דָּוִד֒ יְהוָ֗ה אֲשֶׁ֨ר הִצִּלַ֜נִי מִיַּ֤ד הָֽאֲרִי֙ וּמִיַּ֣ד הַדֹּ֔ב ה֣וּא יַצִּילֵ֔נִי מִיַּ֥ד הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖י הַזֶּ֑ה ס וַיֹּ֨אמֶר שָׁא֤וּל אֶל־דָּוִד֙ לֵ֔ךְ וַֽיהוָ֖ה יִהְיֶ֥ה עִמָּֽךְ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּalebּe֨shsh shsha'֤ul 'et-dּavid֙ madּa֔yv venata֛n q֥oba necho֖shshet 'al-ro'shsh֑o vayּalebּe֥shsh 'ot֖o shshireyֽon׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Saul dressed David in his own tunic. He put a coat of armour on him and a bronze helmet on his head.

וַיַּלְבֵּ֨שׁ שָׁא֤וּל אֶת־דָּוִד֙ מַדָּ֔יו וְנָתַ֛ן ק֥וֹבַע נְחֹ֖שֶׁת עַל־רֹאשׁ֑וֹ וַיַּלְבֵּ֥שׁ אֹת֖וֹ שִׁרְיֽוֹן׃

39
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּachegּo֣r dּavi֣d 'et-cha֠rebּo me'a֨l lemadּa֜yv vayּo֣'el laleket֮ kּi֣y loֽ'-nisּah֒ vayּo֨'mer dּavi֜d 'el-shsha'֗ul lo֥ 'uka֛l lale֥ket bּa'e֖lּeh kּi֣y lo֣ nisּi֑ytiy vayesire֥m dּavi֖d me'alaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)David fastened on his sword over the tunic and tried walking around, because he was not used to them. "I cannot go in these," he said to Saul, "because I am not used to them." So he took them off.

וַיַּחְגֹּ֣ר דָּוִ֣ד אֶת־חַ֠רְבּוֹ מֵעַ֨ל לְמַדָּ֜יו וַיֹּ֣אֶל לָלֶכֶת֮ כִּ֣י לֹֽא־נִסָּה֒ וַיֹּ֨אמֶר דָּוִ֜ד אֶל־שָׁא֗וּל לֹ֥א אוּכַ֛ל לָלֶ֥כֶת בָּאֵ֖לֶּה כִּ֣י לֹ֣א נִסִּ֑יתִי וַיְסִרֵ֥ם דָּוִ֖ד מֵעָלָֽיו׃

40
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֨ch maqel֜o bּeyad֗o vayּibechar-l֣o chamishshּa֣h chalּuqeֽy-'abani֣ym ׀ min-hanּa֡chal vayּa֣shsem 'o֠tam bּikeli֨y haro'i֧ym 'ashsher-l֛o ubayּaleq֖ut veqalּe'֣o beyad֑o vayּigּa֖shsh 'el-hapּelishshetּiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then he took his staff in his hand, chose five smooth stones from the stream, put them in the pouch of his shepherd’s bag and, with his sling in his hand, approached the Philistine.

וַיִּקַּ֨ח מַקְל֜וֹ בְּיָד֗וֹ וַיִּבְחַר־ל֣וֹ חֲמִשָּׁ֣ה חַלֻּקֵֽי־אֲבָנִ֣ים ׀ מִן־הַנַּ֡חַל וַיָּ֣שֶׂם אֹ֠תָם בִּכְלִ֨י הָרֹעִ֧ים אֲשֶׁר־ל֛וֹ וּבַיַּלְק֖וּט וְקַלְּע֣וֹ בְיָד֑וֹ וַיִּגַּ֖שׁ אֶל־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּֽי׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֨leke֙ hapּelishshetּi֔y hole֥ke veqare֖b 'el-dּavi֑d veha'i֛yshsh noshse֥ hatzּinּa֖h lepanaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Meanwhile, the Philistine, with his shield-bearer in front of him, kept coming closer to David.

וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ֙ הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔י הֹלֵ֥ךְ וְקָרֵ֖ב אֶל־דָּוִ֑ד וְהָאִ֛ישׁ נֹשֵׂ֥א הַצִּנָּ֖ה לְפָנָֽיו׃

42
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabּe֧t hapּelishshetּi֛y vayּire'e֥h 'et-dּavi֖d vayּibeze֑hu kּiֽy-haya֣h na֔'ar ve'ademoni֖y 'im-yepe֥h mare'eֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He looked David over and saw that he was little more than a boy, glowing with health and handsome, and he despised him.

וַיַּבֵּ֧ט הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֛י וַיִּרְאֶ֥ה אֶת־דָּוִ֖ד וַיִּבְזֵ֑הוּ כִּֽי־הָיָ֣ה נַ֔עַר וְאַדְמֹנִ֖י עִם־יְפֵ֥ה מַרְאֶֽה׃

43
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer hapּelishshetּiy֙ 'el-dּavi֔d hake֣leb 'ano֔kiy kּiֽy-'atּa֥h baֽ'-'ela֖y bּamּaqel֑ot vayeqalּe֧l hapּelishshetּi֛y 'et-dּavi֖d bּe'lohaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?" And the Philistine cursed David by his gods.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר הַפְּלִשְׁתִּי֙ אֶל־דָּוִ֔ד הֲכֶ֣לֶב אָנֹ֔כִי כִּֽי־אַתָּ֥ה בָֽא־אֵלַ֖י בַּמַּקְל֑וֹת וַיְקַלֵּ֧ל הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֛י אֶת־דָּוִ֖ד בֵּאלֹהָֽיו׃

44
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֥'mer hapּelishshetּi֖y 'el-dּavi֑d leka֣h 'ela֔y ve'etּenah֙ 'et-bּeshsa֣reka֔ le'֥op hashshּama֖yim ulebehema֥t hashsּadeֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)"Come here," he said, "and I’ll give your flesh to the birds and the wild animals!"

וַיֹּ֥אמֶר הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖י אֶל־דָּוִ֑ד לְכָ֣ה אֵלַ֔י וְאֶתְּנָה֙ אֶת־בְּשָׂ֣רְךָ֔ לְע֥וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וּלְבֶהֱמַ֥ת הַשָּׂדֶֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer dּavid֙ 'el-hapּelishshetּi֔y 'atּah֙ bּa֣ 'ela֔y bּeche֖reb ubachani֣yt ubekiyd֑on ve'anoki֣y baֽ'-'ele֗yka bּeshshem֙ yehva֣h tzeba'֔ot 'elohe֛y ma'arek֥ot yishsera'e֖l 'ashshe֥r cheraֽpetּa׃
Edified Edition (EDE)David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the LORD of Armies, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר דָּוִד֙ אֶל־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔י אַתָּה֙ בָּ֣א אֵלַ֔י בְּחֶ֖רֶב וּבַחֲנִ֣ית וּבְכִיד֑וֹן וְאָנֹכִ֣י בָֽא־אֵלֶ֗יךָ בְּשֵׁם֙ יְהוָ֣ה צְבָא֔וֹת אֱלֹהֵ֛י מַעַרְכ֥וֹת יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אֲשֶׁ֥ר חֵרַֽפְתָּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hayּ֣om hazּe֡h yesagּereka֩ yehva֨h bּeyadi֜y vehikּiyti֗ka vahasiroti֤y 'et-roֽ'shsheka֙ me'ale֔yka vena֨tatּi֜y pּe֣ger machane֤h pelishshetּiym֙ hayּ֣om hazּe֔h le'֥op hashshּama֖yim ulechayּa֣t ha'a֑retz veyeֽde'u֙ kּal-ha'a֔retz kּi֛y ye֥shsh 'elohi֖ym leyishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)This day the LORD will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel.

הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֡ה יְסַגֶּרְךָ֩ יְהוָ֨ה בְּיָדִ֜י וְהִכִּיתִ֗ךָ וַהֲסִרֹתִ֤י אֶת־רֹֽאשְׁךָ֙ מֵעָלֶ֔יךָ וְנָ֨תַתִּ֜י פֶּ֣גֶר מַחֲנֵ֤ה פְלִשְׁתִּים֙ הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה לְע֥וֹף הַשָּׁמַ֖יִם וּלְחַיַּ֣ת הָאָ֑רֶץ וְיֵֽדְעוּ֙ כָּל־הָאָ֔רֶץ כִּ֛י יֵ֥שׁ אֱלֹהִ֖ים לְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

47
Phonetic (Hebrew): veyeֽde'u֙ kּal-haqּaha֣l hazּe֔h kּiֽy-lo֛ bּeche֥reb ubachani֖yt yehoshshi֣y'a yehva֑h kּi֤y laֽyhvah֙ hamּilechama֔h venata֥n 'eteke֖m bּeyadeֽnu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give all of you into our hands."

וְיֵֽדְעוּ֙ כָּל־הַקָּהָ֣ל הַזֶּ֔ה כִּֽי־לֹ֛א בְּחֶ֥רֶב וּבַחֲנִ֖ית יְהוֹשִׁ֣יעַ יְהוָ֑ה כִּ֤י לַֽיהוָה֙ הַמִּלְחָמָ֔ה וְנָתַ֥ן אֶתְכֶ֖ם בְּיָדֵֽנוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vehayah֙ kּiֽy-qa֣m hapּelishshetּi֔y vayּe֥leke vayּiqera֖b liqera֣'t dּavi֑d vayemahe֣r dּavi֔d vayּa֥ratz hamּa'araka֖h liqera֥'t hapּelishshetּiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As the Philistine moved closer to attack him, David ran quickly toward the battle line to meet him.

וְהָיָה֙ כִּֽי־קָ֣ם הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔י וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ וַיִּקְרַ֖ב לִקְרַ֣את דָּוִ֑ד וַיְמַהֵ֣ר דָּוִ֔ד וַיָּ֥רָץ הַמַּעֲרָכָ֖ה לִקְרַ֥את הַפְּלִשְׁתִּֽי׃

49
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshelach֩ dּavi֨d 'et-yad֜o 'el-hakּe֗liy vayּiqּa֨ch mishshּa֥m 'e֨ben֙ vayeqalּa֔ vayּa֥ke 'et-hapּelishshetּi֖y 'el-mitzech֑o vatּitebּa֤ ha'e֨ben֙ bּemitzech֔o vayּipּo֥l 'al-pּana֖yv 'aֽretzah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Reaching into his bag and taking out a stone, he slung it and struck the Philistine on the forehead. The stone sank into his forehead, and he fell face down on the ground.

וַיִּשְׁלַח֩ דָּוִ֨ד אֶת־יָד֜וֹ אֶל־הַכֶּ֗לִי וַיִּקַּ֨ח מִשָּׁ֥ם אֶ֨בֶן֙ וַיְקַלַּ֔ע וַיַּ֥ךְ אֶת־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖י אֶל־מִצְח֑וֹ וַתִּטְבַּ֤ע הָאֶ֨בֶן֙ בְּמִצְח֔וֹ וַיִּפֹּ֥ל עַל־פָּנָ֖יו אָֽרְצָה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּecheza֨q dּavi֤d min-hapּelishshetּiy֙ bּaqּe֣la uba'e֔ben vayּa֥ke 'et-hapּelishshetּi֖y vayemiyte֑hu veche֖reb 'e֥yn bּeyad-dּaviֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So David triumphed over the Philistine with a sling and a stone; without a sword in his hand he struck down the Philistine and killed him.

וַיֶּחֱזַ֨ק דָּוִ֤ד מִן־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּי֙ בַּקֶּ֣לַע וּבָאֶ֔בֶן וַיַּ֥ךְ אֶת־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖י וַיְמִיתֵ֑הוּ וְחֶ֖רֶב אֵ֥ין בְּיַד־דָּוִֽד׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣ratz dּa֠vid vayּa'amo֨d 'el-hapּelishshetּi֜y vayּiqּa֣ch 'et-cha֠rebּo vaֽyּishshelepa֤hּ mitּa'erahּ֙ vayemo֣tete֔hu vayּikerat-bּa֖hּ 'et-ro'shsh֑o vayּire'֧u hapּelishshetּi֛ym kּiֽy-me֥t gּibּora֖m vayּanuֽsu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)David ran and stood over him. He took hold of the Philistine’s sword and drew it from the sheath. After he killed him, he cut off his head with the sword. When the Philistines saw that their hero was dead, they turned and ran.

וַיָּ֣רָץ דָּ֠וִד וַיַּעֲמֹ֨ד אֶל־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֜י וַיִּקַּ֣ח אֶת־חַ֠רְבּוֹ וַֽיִּשְׁלְפָ֤הּ מִתַּעְרָהּ֙ וַיְמֹ֣תְתֵ֔הוּ וַיִּכְרָת־בָּ֖הּ אֶת־רֹאשׁ֑וֹ וַיִּרְא֧וּ הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֛ים כִּֽי־מֵ֥ת גִּבּוֹרָ֖ם וַיָּנֻֽסוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּaqu֣mu 'aneshshey֩ yishsera'e֨l viyhuda֜h vayּari֗'u vaֽyּiredּepu֙ 'et-hapּelishshetּi֔ym 'ad-bּo'aka֣ ga֔ye ve'a֖d shsha'are֣y 'eqer֑on vaֽyּipּel֞u chaֽlele֤y pelishshetּiym֙ bּede֣reke shsha'ara֔yim ve'ad-gּa֖t ve'ad-'eqerֽon׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the men of Israel and Judah surged forward with a shout and pursued the Philistines to the entrance of Gath and to the gates of Ekron. Their dead were strewn along the Shaaraim road to Gath and Ekron.

וַיָּקֻ֣מוּ אַנְשֵׁי֩ יִשְׂרָאֵ֨ל וִיהוּדָ֜ה וַיָּרִ֗עוּ וַֽיִּרְדְּפוּ֙ אֶת־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים עַד־בּוֹאֲךָ֣ גַ֔יְא וְעַ֖ד שַׁעֲרֵ֣י עֶקְר֑וֹן וַֽיִּפְּל֞וּ חַֽלְלֵ֤י פְלִשְׁתִּים֙ בְּדֶ֣רֶךְ שַׁעֲרַ֔יִם וְעַד־גַּ֖ת וְעַד־עֶקְרֽוֹן׃

Edified Edition (EDE)When the Israelites returned from chasing the Philistines, they plundered their camp.

וַיָּשֻׁ֨בוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל מִדְּלֹ֖ק אַחֲרֵ֣י פְלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַיָּשֹׁ֖סּוּ אֶת־מַחֲנֵיהֶֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֤ch dּavid֙ 'et-ro֣'shsh hapּelishshetּi֔y vayebi'e֖hu yerushshala֑im ve'et-kּela֖yv shsa֥m bּe'aholֽo׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)David took the Philistine’s head and brought it to Jerusalem; he put the Philistine’s weapons in his own tent.

וַיִּקַּ֤ח דָּוִד֙ אֶת־רֹ֣אשׁ הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔י וַיְבִאֵ֖הוּ יְרוּשָׁלִָ֑ם וְאֶת־כֵּלָ֖יו שָׂ֥ם בְּאָהֳלֽוֹ׃ס

Edified Edition (EDE)As Saul watched David going out to meet the Philistine, he said to Abner, commander of the army, "Abner, whose son is that young man?" Abner replied, "As surely as you live, Your Majesty, I don’t know."

וְכִרְא֨וֹת שָׁא֜וּל אֶת־דָּוִ֗ד יֹצֵא֙ לִקְרַ֣את הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔י אָמַ֗ר אֶל־אַבְנֵר֙ שַׂ֣ר הַצָּבָ֔א בֶּן־מִי־זֶ֥ה הַנַּ֖עַר אַבְנֵ֑ר וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אַבְנֵ֔ר חֵֽי־נַפְשְׁךָ֥ הַמֶּ֖לֶךְ אִם־יָדָֽעְתִּי׃

Edified Edition (EDE)The king said, "Find out whose son this young man is."

Phonetic (Hebrew): ukeshsh֣ub dּavi֗d meֽhakּot֙ 'et-hapּelishshetּi֔y vayּiqּa֤ch 'oto֙ 'abene֔r vayebi'e֖hu lipene֣y shsha'֑ul vero֥'shsh hapּelishshetּi֖y bּeyadֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As soon as David returned from killing the Philistine, Abner took him and brought him before Saul, with David still holding the Philistine’s head.

וּכְשׁ֣וּב דָּוִ֗ד מֵֽהַכּוֹת֙ אֶת־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔י וַיִּקַּ֤ח אֹתוֹ֙ אַבְנֵ֔ר וַיְבִאֵ֖הוּ לִפְנֵ֣י שָׁא֑וּל וְרֹ֥אשׁ הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖י בְּיָדֽוֹ׃

Edified Edition (EDE)"Whose son are you, young man?" Saul asked him. David said, "I am the son of your servant Jesse of Bethlehem."

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר אֵלָיו֙ שָׁא֔וּל בֶּן־מִ֥י אַתָּ֖ה הַנָּ֑עַר וַיֹּ֣אמֶר דָּוִ֔ד בֶּֽן־עַבְדְּךָ֥ יִשַׁ֖י בֵּ֥ית הַלַּחְמִֽי׃
