Chapter 19
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֣r shsha'֗ul 'el-yonata֤n bּeno֙ ve'el-kּal-'abada֔yv lehami֖yt 'et-dּavi֑d viyhֽonatan֙ bּen-shsha'֔ul chape֥tz bּedavi֖d me'oֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Saul told his son Jonathan and all the attendants to kill David. But Jonathan was very fond of David

וַיְדַבֵּ֣ר שָׁא֗וּל אֶל־יוֹנָתָ֤ן בְּנוֹ֙ וְאֶל־כָּל־עֲבָדָ֔יו לְהָמִ֖ית אֶת־דָּוִ֑ד וִיהֽוֹנָתָן֙ בֶּן־שָׁא֔וּל חָפֵ֥ץ בְּדָוִ֖ד מְאֹֽד׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּagּe֤d yehonatan֙ ledavi֣d le'mo֔r mebaqּe֛shsh shsha'֥ul 'abi֖y lahamiyte֑ka ve'atּah֙ hishshּaֽmer-na֣ babּo֔qer veyashshabetּa֥ basּe֖ter venachebּeֽ'ta׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and warned him, "My father Saul is looking for a chance to kill you. Be on your guard tomorrow morning; go into hiding and stay there.

וַיַּגֵּ֤ד יְהוֹנָתָן֙ לְדָוִ֣ד לֵאמֹ֔ר מְבַקֵּ֛שׁ שָׁא֥וּל אָבִ֖י לַהֲמִיתֶ֑ךָ וְעַתָּה֙ הִשָּֽׁמֶר־נָ֣א בַבֹּ֔קֶר וְיָשַׁבְתָּ֥ בַסֵּ֖תֶר וְנַחְבֵּֽאתָ׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): va'ani֨y 'etze֜ ve'amadetּi֣y leyad-'abi֗y bּashsּadeh֙ 'ashshe֣r 'atּa֣h shsha֔m va'ani֕y 'adabּe֥r bּeka֖ 'el-'abi֑y vera'i֥ytiy ma֖h vehigּa֥detּiy laֽke׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)I will go out and stand with my father in the field where you are. I’ll speak to him about you and will tell you what I find out."

וַאֲנִ֨י אֵצֵ֜א וְעָמַדְתִּ֣י לְיַד־אָבִ֗י בַּשָּׂדֶה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אַתָּ֣ה שָׁ֔ם וַאֲנִ֕י אֲדַבֵּ֥ר בְּךָ֖ אֶל־אָבִ֑י וְרָאִ֥יתִי מָ֖ה וְהִגַּ֥דְתִּי לָֽךְ׃ס

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayedabּe֨r yehonata֤n bּedavid֙ t֔ob 'el-shsha'֖ul 'abi֑yv vayּo֣'mer 'e֠layv 'al-yecheta֨ hamּe֜leke bּe'abedּ֣o bedavi֗d kּi֣y l֤o chata'֙ la֔ke veki֥y ma'ashsa֖yv tob-leka֥ me'oֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Jonathan spoke well of David to Saul his father and said to him, "Let not the king do wrong to his servant David; he has not wronged you, and what he has done has benefited you greatly.

וַיְדַבֵּ֨ר יְהוֹנָתָ֤ן בְּדָוִד֙ ט֔וֹב אֶל־שָׁא֖וּל אָבִ֑יו וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵ֠לָיו אַל־יֶחֱטָ֨א הַמֶּ֜לֶךְ בְּעַבְדּ֣וֹ בְדָוִ֗ד כִּ֣י ל֤וֹא חָטָא֙ לָ֔ךְ וְכִ֥י מַעֲשָׂ֖יו טוֹב־לְךָ֥ מְאֹֽד׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashsem֩ 'et-napeshsh֨o bekapּ֜o vayּa֣ke 'et-hapּelishshetּi֗y vayּa֨'ashs yehva֜h tּeshshu'a֤h gedolah֙ lekal-yishsera'e֔l ra'i֖yta vatּishsema֑ch vela֤mּah teֽcheta'֙ bּeda֣m naqi֔y lehami֥yt 'et-dּavi֖d chinּaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He took his life in his hands when he killed the Philistine. the LORD won a great victory for all Israel, and you saw it and were glad. Why then would you do wrong to an innocent man like David by killing him without cause?"

וַיָּשֶׂם֩ אֶת־נַפְשׁ֨וֹ בְכַפּ֜וֹ וַיַּ֣ךְ אֶת־הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֗י וַיַּ֨עַשׂ יְהוָ֜ה תְּשׁוּעָ֤ה גְדוֹלָה֙ לְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל רָאִ֖יתָ וַתִּשְׂמָ֑ח וְלָ֤מָּה תֶֽחֱטָא֙ בְּדָ֣ם נָקִ֔י לְהָמִ֥ית אֶת־דָּוִ֖ד חִנָּֽם׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshema֥ shsha'֖ul bּeq֣ol yehonata֑n vayּishshּaba֣ shsha'֔ul chay-yehva֖h 'im-yumaֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Saul listened to Jonathan and took this oath: "As surely as the LORD lives, David will not be put to death."

וַיִּשְׁמַ֥ע שָׁא֖וּל בְּק֣וֹל יְהוֹנָתָ֑ן וַיִּשָּׁבַ֣ע שָׁא֔וּל חַי־יְהוָ֖ה אִם־יוּמָֽת׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֤ yehonatan֙ ledavi֔d vayּagּed-lo֙ yeh֣onata֔n 'e֥t kּal-hadּebari֖ym ha'e֑lּeh vayּabe֨ yehonata֤n 'et-dּavid֙ 'el-shsha'֔ul vayehi֥y lepana֖yv kּe'etem֥ol shshileshshֽom׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)So Jonathan called David and told him the whole conversation. He brought him to Saul, and David was with Saul as before.

וַיִּקְרָ֤א יְהוֹנָתָן֙ לְדָוִ֔ד וַיַּגֶּד־לוֹ֙ יְה֣וֹנָתָ֔ן אֵ֥ת כָּל־הַדְּבָרִ֖ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה וַיָּבֵ֨א יְהוֹנָתָ֤ן אֶת־דָּוִד֙ אֶל־שָׁא֔וּל וַיְהִ֥י לְפָנָ֖יו כְּאֶתְמ֥וֹל שִׁלְשֽׁוֹם׃ס

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּ֥osep hamּilechama֖h liֽhey֑ot vayּetze֨ davi֜d vayּilּa֣chem bּapּelishshetּi֗ym vayּa֤ke bּahem֙ makּa֣h gedola֔h vayּanu֖su mipּanaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Once more war broke out, and David went out and fought the Philistines. He struck them with such force that they fled before him.

וַתּ֥וֹסֶף הַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה לִֽהְי֑וֹת וַיֵּצֵ֨א דָוִ֜ד וַיִּלָּ֣חֶם בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּ֗ים וַיַּ֤ךְ בָּהֶם֙ מַכָּ֣ה גְדוֹלָ֔ה וַיָּנֻ֖סוּ מִפָּנָֽיו׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּehiy֩ r֨ucha yehva֤h ׀ ra'ah֙ 'el-shsha'֔ul vehu'֙ bּebeyt֣o yoshshe֔b vachaniyt֖o bּeyad֑o vedavi֖d menagּe֥n bּeyaֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But an evil spirit from the LORD came on Saul as he was sitting in his house with his spear in his hand. While David was playing the lyre,

וַתְּהִי֩ ר֨וּחַ יְהוָ֤ה ׀ רָעָה֙ אֶל־שָׁא֔וּל וְהוּא֙ בְּבֵית֣וֹ יוֹשֵׁ֔ב וַחֲנִית֖וֹ בְּיָד֑וֹ וְדָוִ֖ד מְנַגֵּ֥ן בְּיָֽד׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayebaqּe֨shsh shsha'֜ul lehakּ֤ot bּaֽchaniyt֙ bּedavi֣d ubaqּi֔yr vayּipetar֙ mipּene֣y shsha'֔ul vayּa֥ke 'eֽt-hachani֖yt bּaqּi֑yr vedavi֛d na֥s vayּimּale֖t bּalּa֥yelah hֽu'׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)Saul tried to pin him to the wall with his spear, but David eluded him as Saul drove the spear into the wall. That night David made his escape.

וַיְבַקֵּ֨שׁ שָׁא֜וּל לְהַכּ֤וֹת בַּֽחֲנִית֙ בְּדָוִ֣ד וּבַקִּ֔יר וַיִּפְטַר֙ מִפְּנֵ֣י שָׁא֔וּל וַיַּ֥ךְ אֶֽת־הַחֲנִ֖ית בַּקִּ֑יר וְדָוִ֛ד נָ֥ס וַיִּמָּלֵ֖ט בַּלַּ֥יְלָה הֽוּא׃פ

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshelach֩ shsha'֨ul male'aki֜ym 'el-bּe֤yt dּavid֙ leshshamer֔o velahamiyt֖o bּabּo֑qer vatּagּe֣d ledavi֗d miyka֤l 'ishshetּo֙ le'mo֔r 'im-'e֨yneka֜ memalּe֤t 'eֽt-napeshsheka֙ halּa֔yelah macha֖r 'atּa֥h mumaֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Saul sent men to David’s house to watch it and to kill him in the morning. But Michal, David’s wife, warned him, "If you don’t run for your life tonight, tomorrow you’ll be killed."

וַיִּשְׁלַח֩ שָׁא֨וּל מַלְאָכִ֜ים אֶל־בֵּ֤ית דָּוִד֙ לְשָׁמְר֔וֹ וְלַהֲמִית֖וֹ בַּבֹּ֑קֶר וַתַּגֵּ֣ד לְדָוִ֗ד מִיכַ֤ל אִשְׁתּוֹ֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר אִם־אֵ֨ינְךָ֜ מְמַלֵּ֤ט אֶֽת־נַפְשְׁךָ֙ הַלַּ֔יְלָה מָחָ֖ר אַתָּ֥ה מוּמָֽת׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּo֧red miyka֛l 'et-dּavi֖d bּe'a֣d hachalּ֑on vayּe֥leke vayּibera֖ch vayּimּaleֽt׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Michal let David down through a window, and he fled and escaped.

וַתֹּ֧רֶד מִיכַ֛ל אֶת־דָּוִ֖ד בְּעַ֣ד הַחַלּ֑וֹן וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ וַיִּבְרַ֖ח וַיִּמָּלֵֽט׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּiqּa֨ch miyka֜l 'et-hatּerapi֗ym vatּa֨shsem֙ 'el-hamּitּa֔h ve'et֙ kּebi֣yr haֽ'izּi֔ym shsa֖mah meraֽ'ashshota֑yv vatּeka֖s bּabּaֽged׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Michal took an idol and laid it on the bed, putting some goats’ hair at the head and covering it with a garment.

וַתִּקַּ֨ח מִיכַ֜ל אֶת־הַתְּרָפִ֗ים וַתָּ֨שֶׂם֙ אֶל־הַמִּטָּ֔ה וְאֵת֙ כְּבִ֣יר הָֽעִזִּ֔ים שָׂ֖מָה מְרַֽאֲשֹׁתָ֑יו וַתְּכַ֖ס בַּבָּֽגֶד׃ס

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֥ch shsha'֛ul male'aki֖ym laqa֣chat 'et-dּavi֑d vatּo֖'mer chole֥h hֽu'׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)When Saul sent the men to capture David, Michal said, "He is ill."

וַיִּשְׁלַ֥ח שָׁא֛וּל מַלְאָכִ֖ים לָקַ֣חַת אֶת־דָּוִ֑ד וַתֹּ֖אמֶר חֹלֶ֥ה הֽוּא׃פ

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֤ch shsha'ul֙ 'et-hamּale'aki֔ym lire'֥ot 'et-dּavi֖d le'mo֑r ha'al֨u 'ot֧o bamּitּa֛h 'ela֖y lahamitֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Saul sent the men back to see David and told them, "Bring him up to me in his bed so that I may kill him."

וַיִּשְׁלַ֤ח שָׁאוּל֙ אֶת־הַמַּלְאָכִ֔ים לִרְא֥וֹת אֶת־דָּוִ֖ד לֵאמֹ֑ר הַעֲל֨וּ אֹת֧וֹ בַמִּטָּ֛ה אֵלַ֖י לַהֲמִתֽוֹ׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֨'u֙ hamּale'aki֔ym vehinּe֥h hatּerapi֖ym 'el-hamּitּa֑h ukebi֥yr ha'izּi֖ym mera'ashshotaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But when the men entered, there was the idol in the bed, and at the head was some goats’ hair.

וַיָּבֹ֨אוּ֙ הַמַּלְאָכִ֔ים וְהִנֵּ֥ה הַתְּרָפִ֖ים אֶל־הַמִּטָּ֑ה וּכְבִ֥יר הָעִזִּ֖ים מְרַאֲשֹׁתָֽיו׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer shsha'֜ul 'el-miyka֗l la֤mּah kּa֨kah֙ rimּiyti֔niy vatּeshshalּechi֥y 'et-'oyebi֖y vayּimּale֑t vatּo֤'mer miykal֙ 'el-shsha'֔ul hu'-'ama֥r 'ela֛y shshalּechi֖niy lama֥h 'amiyteֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Saul said to Michal, "Why did you deceive me like this and send my enemy away so that he escaped?" Michal told him, "He said to me, 'Let me go. Why should I kill you?'"

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר שָׁא֜וּל אֶל־מִיכַ֗ל לָ֤מָּה כָּ֨כָה֙ רִמִּיתִ֔נִי וַתְּשַׁלְּחִ֥י אֶת־אֹיְבִ֖י וַיִּמָּלֵ֑ט וַתֹּ֤אמֶר מִיכַל֙ אֶל־שָׁא֔וּל הוּא־אָמַ֥ר אֵלַ֛י שַׁלְּחִ֖נִי לָמָ֥ה אֲמִיתֵֽךְ׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vedavi֨d bּara֜ch vayּimּale֗t vayּabo֤ 'el-shshemu'el֙ harama֔tah vayּa֨gּed-l֔o 'e֛t kּal-'ashshe֥r 'aֽshsah-l֖o shsha'֑ul vayּe֤leke hu'֙ ushshemu'e֔l vayּeshsheb֖u bnvyt bּenaֽyot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When David had fled and escaped, he went to Samuel at Ramah and told him all that Saul had done to him. Then he and Samuel went to Naioth and stayed there.

וְדָוִ֨ד בָּרַ֜ח וַיִּמָּלֵ֗ט וַיָּבֹ֤א אֶל־שְׁמוּאֵל֙ הָרָמָ֔תָה וַיַּ֨גֶּד־ל֔וֹ אֵ֛ת כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֥ר עָֽשָׂה־ל֖וֹ שָׁא֑וּל וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ הוּא֙ וּשְׁמוּאֵ֔ל וַיֵּשְׁב֖וּ בנוית בְּנָֽיוֹת׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּugּa֥d leshsha'֖ul le'mo֑r hinּe֣h davi֔d bnvyt bּenay֖ot bּaramaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Word came to Saul: "David is in Naioth at Ramah";

וַיֻּגַּ֥ד לְשָׁא֖וּל לֵאמֹ֑ר הִנֵּ֣ה דָוִ֔ד בנוית בְּנָי֖וֹת בָּרָמָֽה׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshela֨ch shsha'֣ul male'akiym֮ laqa֣chat 'et-dּavid֒ vayּa֗re 'eֽt-lahaqa֤t hanּebiy'iym֙ nibּe'i֔ym ushshemu'e֕l 'ome֥d nitzּa֖b 'aleyhe֑m vatּehi֞y 'aֽl-male'ake֤y shsha'ul֙ r֣ucha 'elohi֔ym vayּiֽtenabּe'֖u gּam-heֽmּah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)so he sent men to capture him. But when they saw a group of prophets prophesying, with Samuel standing there as their leader, the Spirit of God came on Saul’s men, and they also prophesied.

וַיִּשְׁלַ֨ח שָׁא֣וּל מַלְאָכִים֮ לָקַ֣חַת אֶת־דָּוִד֒ וַיַּ֗רְא אֶֽת־לַהֲקַ֤ת הַנְּבִיאִים֙ נִבְּאִ֔ים וּשְׁמוּאֵ֕ל עֹמֵ֥ד נִצָּ֖ב עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם וַתְּהִ֞י עַֽל־מַלְאֲכֵ֤י שָׁאוּל֙ ר֣וּחַ אֱלֹהִ֔ים וַיִּֽתְנַבְּא֖וּ גַּם־הֵֽמָּה׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּagּi֣du leshsha'֗ul vayּishshelach֙ male'aki֣ym 'acheri֔ym vayּiֽtenabּe'֖u gּam-he֑mּah vayּo֣sep shsha'֗ul vayּishshelach֙ male'aki֣ym shshelishshi֔ym vayּiֽtenabּe'֖u gּam-heֽmּah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Saul was told about it, and he sent more men, and they prophesied too. Saul sent men a third time, and they also prophesied.

וַיַּגִּ֣דוּ לְשָׁא֗וּל וַיִּשְׁלַח֙ מַלְאָכִ֣ים אֲחֵרִ֔ים וַיִּֽתְנַבְּא֖וּ גַּם־הֵ֑מָּה וַיֹּ֣סֶף שָׁא֗וּל וַיִּשְׁלַח֙ מַלְאָכִ֣ים שְׁלִשִׁ֔ים וַיִּֽתְנַבְּא֖וּ גַּם־הֵֽמָּה׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֨leke gּam-h֜u harama֗tah vayּabo'֙ 'ad-bּ֤or hagּadol֙ 'ashshe֣r bּashsּe֔ku vayּishshe'a֣l vayּo֔'mer 'eypo֥h shshemu'e֖l vedavi֑d vayּo֕'mer hinּe֖h bnvyt bּenay֥ot bּaramaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Finally, he himself left for Ramah and went to the great cistern at Seku. And he asked, "Where are Samuel and David?" "Over in Naioth at Ramah," they said.

וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ גַּם־ה֜וּא הָרָמָ֗תָה וַיָּבֹא֙ עַד־בּ֤וֹר הַגָּדוֹל֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר בַּשֶּׂ֔כוּ וַיִּשְׁאַ֣ל וַיֹּ֔אמֶר אֵיפֹ֥ה שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל וְדָוִ֑ד וַיֹּ֕אמֶר הִנֵּ֖ה בנוית בְּנָי֥וֹת בָּרָמָֽה׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֣leke shsha֔m 'el-nvyt nay֖ot bּarama֑h vatּehiy֩ 'ala֨yv gּam-h֜u r֣ucha 'elohi֗ym vayּe֤leke haloke֙ vayּitenabּe֔ 'ad-bּo'֖o bnvyt bּenay֥ot bּaramaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Saul went to Naioth at Ramah. But the Spirit of God came even on him, and he walked along prophesying until he came to Naioth.

וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ שָׁ֔ם אֶל־נוית נָי֖וֹת בָּרָמָ֑ה וַתְּהִי֩ עָלָ֨יו גַּם־ה֜וּא ר֣וּחַ אֱלֹהִ֗ים וַיֵּ֤לֶךְ הָלוֹךְ֙ וַיִּתְנַבֵּ֔א עַד־בֹּא֖וֹ בנוית בְּנָי֥וֹת בָּרָמָֽה׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּipeshsha֨t gּam-h֜u bּegada֗yv vayּitenabּe֤ gam-hu'֙ lipene֣y shshemu'e֔l vayּipּo֣l 'aro֔m kּal-hayּ֥om hah֖u vekal-halּa֑yelah 'al-kּen֙ yoֽ'mer֔u haga֥m shsha'֖ul bּanּebiy'iֽm׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)He stripped off his garments and he too prophesied in Samuel’s presence. He lay naked all that day and all that night. This is why people say, "Is Saul also among the prophets?"

וַיִּפְשַׁ֨ט גַּם־ה֜וּא בְּגָדָ֗יו וַיִּתְנַבֵּ֤א גַם־הוּא֙ לִפְנֵ֣י שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל וַיִּפֹּ֣ל עָרֹ֔ם כָּל־הַיּ֥וֹם הַה֖וּא וְכָל־הַלָּ֑יְלָה עַל־כֵּן֙ יֹֽאמְר֔וּ הֲגַ֥ם שָׁא֖וּל בַּנְּבִיאִֽם׃פ
