Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּitepּalּe֤l chanּah֙ vatּo'ma֔r 'ala֤tz libּiy֙ bּaֽyhva֔h ra֥mah qareni֖y bּaֽyhva֑h ra֤chab pּiy֙ 'al-'֣oyeba֔y kּi֥y shsama֖chetּiy bּiyshshu'ateֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Hannah prayed and said: "My heart rejoices in the LORD; in the LORD my horn is lifted high. My mouth boasts over my enemies, for I delight in your deliverance.

וַתִּתְפַּלֵּ֤ל חַנָּה֙ וַתֹּאמַ֔ר עָלַ֤ץ לִבִּי֙ בַּֽיהוָ֔ה רָ֥מָה קַרְנִ֖י בַּֽיהוָ֑ה רָ֤חַב פִּי֙ עַל־א֣וֹיְבַ֔י כִּ֥י שָׂמַ֖חְתִּי בִּישׁוּעָתֶֽךָ׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): eyn-qad֥oshsh kּayhva֖h kּi֣y 'e֣yn bּiletּe֑ka ve'e֥yn tz֖ur kּe'loheֽynu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"There is no one holy like the LORD; there is no one besides you; there is no Rock like our God.

אֵין־קָד֥וֹשׁ כַּיהוָ֖ה כִּ֣י אֵ֣ין בִּלְתֶּ֑ךָ וְאֵ֥ין צ֖וּר כֵּאלֹהֵֽינוּ׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): al-tּarebּ֤u tedabּeru֙ gּeboha֣h geboha֔h yetze֥ 'ata֖q mipּiyke֑m kּi֣y 'e֤l dּe'ot֙ yehva֔h vl vel֥o nitekּen֖u 'alilֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Do not keep talking so proudly or let such arrogance come from your mouth, for the LORD is a God who knows, and by him deeds are weighed.

אַל־תַּרְבּ֤וּ תְדַבְּרוּ֙ גְּבֹהָ֣ה גְבֹהָ֔ה יֵצֵ֥א עָתָ֖ק מִפִּיכֶ֑ם כִּ֣י אֵ֤ל דֵּעוֹת֙ יְהוָ֔ה ולא וְל֥וֹ נִתְכְּנ֖וּ עֲלִלֽוֹת׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): qe֥shshet gּibּori֖ym chatּi֑ym venikeshshali֖ym 'a֥zeru chaֽyil׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"The bows of the warriors are broken, but those who stumbled are armed with strength.

קֶ֥שֶׁת גִּבֹּרִ֖ים חַתִּ֑ים וְנִכְשָׁלִ֖ים אָ֥זְרוּ חָֽיִל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): shsebe'i֤ym bּalּe֨chem֙ nishsekּa֔ru ure'ebi֖ym chade֑lּu 'ad-'aqarah֙ yaleda֣h shshibe'a֔h verabּa֥t bּani֖ym 'umelaֽlah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Those who were full hire themselves out for food, but those who were hungry are hungry no more. She who was barren has borne seven children, but she who has had many sons pines away.

שְׂבֵעִ֤ים בַּלֶּ֨חֶם֙ נִשְׂכָּ֔רוּ וּרְעֵבִ֖ים חָדֵ֑לּוּ עַד־עֲקָרָה֙ יָלְדָ֣ה שִׁבְעָ֔ה וְרַבַּ֥ת בָּנִ֖ים אֻמְלָֽלָה׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): yehva֖h memi֣yt umechayּe֑h mori֥yd shshe'֖ol vayּaֽ'al׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"The LORD brings death and makes alive; he brings down to Sheol [1] and raises up.

יְהוָ֖ה מֵמִ֣ית וּמְחַיֶּ֑ה מוֹרִ֥יד שְׁא֖וֹל וַיָּֽעַל׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): yehva֖h mori֣yshsh uma'ashshi֑yr mashshepּi֖yl 'ap-meromeֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"The LORD sends poverty and wealth; he humbles and he exalts.

יְהוָ֖ה מוֹרִ֣ישׁ וּמַעֲשִׁ֑יר מַשְׁפִּ֖יל אַף־מְרוֹמֵֽם׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): meqi֨ym me'apa֜r dּa֗l meֽ'ashshepּot֙ yari֣ym 'ebey֔on lehoshshiyb֙ 'im-nediybi֔ym vekisּe֥ kab֖od yanechile֑m kּi֤y laֽyhvah֙ metzu֣qey 'e֔retz vayּa֥shshet 'aleyhe֖m tּebeֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"He raises the poor from the dust and lifts the needy from the ash heap; he seats them with princes and has them inherit a throne of honour. "For the foundations of the earth are the LORD’s; on them he has set the world.

מֵקִ֨ים מֵעָפָ֜ר דָּ֗ל מֵֽאַשְׁפֹּת֙ יָרִ֣ים אֶבְי֔וֹן לְהוֹשִׁיב֙ עִם־נְדִיבִ֔ים וְכִסֵּ֥א כָב֖וֹד יַנְחִלֵ֑ם כִּ֤י לַֽיהוָה֙ מְצֻ֣קֵי אֶ֔רֶץ וַיָּ֥שֶׁת עֲלֵיהֶ֖ם תֵּבֵֽל׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): ragele֤y chsydv chasiydayv֙ yishshemo֔r ureshsha'i֖ym bּacho֣shsheke yidּa֑mּu kּiֽy-lo֥ beko֖cha yigebּar-'iֽyshsh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"He will guard the feet of his faithful servants, but the wicked will be silenced in the place of darkness. "It is not by strength that one prevails;

רַגְלֵ֤י חסידו חֲסִידָיו֙ יִשְׁמֹ֔ר וּרְשָׁעִ֖ים בַּחֹ֣שֶׁךְ יִדָּ֑מּוּ כִּֽי־לֹ֥א בְכֹ֖חַ יִגְבַּר־אִֽישׁ׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): yehva֞h yecha֣tּu mrybv meriyba֗yv 'lv 'alayv֙ bּashshּama֣yim yare'e֔m yehva֖h yadi֣yn 'apesey-'a֑retz veyitּen-'o֣z lemalekּ֔o veyare֖m qe֥ren meshshiychֽo׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)those who oppose the LORD will be broken. The Most High will thunder from heaven; the LORD will judge the ends of the earth. "He will give strength to his king and exalt the horn of his anointed."

יְהוָ֞ה יֵחַ֣תּוּ מריבו מְרִיבָ֗יו עלו עָלָיו֙ בַּשָּׁמַ֣יִם יַרְעֵ֔ם יְהוָ֖ה יָדִ֣ין אַפְסֵי־אָ֑רֶץ וְיִתֶּן־עֹ֣ז לְמַלְכּ֔וֹ וְיָרֵ֖ם קֶ֥רֶן מְשִׁיחֽוֹ׃פ

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֧leke 'eleqana֛h harama֖tah 'al-bּeyt֑o vehanּa֗'ar haya֤h meshsharet֙ 'et-yehva֔h 'et-pּene֖y 'eli֥y hakּoheֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Elkanah went home to Ramah, but the boy ministered before the LORD under Eli the priest.

וַיֵּ֧לֶךְ אֶלְקָנָ֛ה הָרָמָ֖תָה עַל־בֵּית֑וֹ וְהַנַּ֗עַר הָיָ֤ה מְשָׁרֵת֙ אֶת־יְהוָ֔ה אֶת־פְּנֵ֖י עֵלִ֥י הַכֹּהֵֽן׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubene֥y 'eli֖y bּene֣y beliyּa֑'al lo֥ yade'֖u 'et-yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Eli’s sons were scoundrels; they had no regard for the LORD.

וּבְנֵ֥י עֵלִ֖י בְּנֵ֣י בְלִיָּ֑עַל לֹ֥א יָדְע֖וּ אֶת־יְהוָֽה׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): umishshepּa֥t hakּohani֖ym 'et-ha'a֑m kּal-'i֞yshsh zobe֣cha ze֗bach uba֨ na֤'ar hakּohen֙ kּebashshּe֣l habּashsa֔r vehamּazele֛g shshelo֥shsh-hashshּinּa֖yim bּeyadֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now it was the practice of the priests that, whenever any of the people offered a sacrifice, the priest’s servant would come with a three-pronged fork in his hand while the meat was being boiled

וּמִשְׁפַּ֥ט הַכֹּהֲנִ֖ים אֶת־הָעָ֑ם כָּל־אִ֞ישׁ זֹבֵ֣חַ זֶ֗בַח וּבָ֨א נַ֤עַר הַכֹּהֵן֙ כְּבַשֵּׁ֣ל הַבָּשָׂ֔ר וְהַמַּזְלֵ֛ג שְׁלֹ֥שׁ־הַשִּׁנַּ֖יִם בְּיָדֽוֹ׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehikּa֨h bakּiyּ֜or '֣o badּ֗ud '֤o baqּalּa֨chat֙ '֣o bapּar֔ur kּo֚l 'ashshe֣r ya'ale֣h hamּazele֔g yiqּa֥ch hakּohe֖n bּ֑o kּa֚kah ya'ashs֣u lekal-yishsera'e֔l habּa'i֥ym shsha֖m bּeshshiloֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and would plunge it into the pan or kettle or cauldron or pot. Whatever the fork brought up the priest took for himself. This is how they treated all the Israelites who came to Shiloh.

וְהִכָּ֨ה בַכִּיּ֜וֹר א֣וֹ בַדּ֗וּד א֤וֹ בַקַּלַּ֨חַת֙ א֣וֹ בַפָּר֔וּר כֹּ֚ל אֲשֶׁ֣ר יַעֲלֶ֣ה הַמַּזְלֵ֔ג יִקַּ֥ח הַכֹּהֵ֖ן בּ֑וֹ כָּ֚כָה יַעֲשׂ֣וּ לְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הַבָּאִ֥ים שָׁ֖ם בְּשִׁלֹֽה׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): gּam֮ bּeterem֮ yaqetir֣un 'et-hacheleb֒ uba֣ ׀ na֣'ar hakּohe֗n ve'amar֙ la'i֣yshsh hazּobe֔cha tּena֣h bashsa֔r litzel֖ot lakּohe֑n veloֽ'-yiqּa֧ch mimּeka֛ bּashsa֥r mebushshּa֖l kּi֥y 'im-chaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But even before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the person who was sacrificing, "Give the priest some meat to roast; he won’t accept boiled meat from you, but only raw."

גַּם֮ בְּטֶרֶם֮ יַקְטִר֣וּן אֶת־הַחֵלֶב֒ וּבָ֣א ׀ נַ֣עַר הַכֹּהֵ֗ן וְאָמַר֙ לָאִ֣ישׁ הַזֹּבֵ֔חַ תְּנָ֣ה בָשָׂ֔ר לִצְל֖וֹת לַכֹּהֵ֑ן וְלֹֽא־יִקַּ֧ח מִמְּךָ֛ בָּשָׂ֥ר מְבֻשָּׁ֖ל כִּ֥י אִם־חָֽי׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer 'ela֜yv ha'i֗yshsh qatּe֨r yaqetiyr֤un kּayּom֙ hache֔leb veqa֨ch-leka֔ kּa'ashshe֥r tּe'aue֖h napeshshe֑ka ve'ama֥r ׀ lv lo'֙ kּi֚y 'atּa֣h titּe֔n ve'im-lo֖ laqa֥chetּiy bechazeqaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If the person said to him, "Let the fat be burned first, and then take whatever you want," the servant would answer, "No, hand it over now; if you don’t, I’ll take it by force."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֜יו הָאִ֗ישׁ קַטֵּ֨ר יַקְטִיר֤וּן כַּיּוֹם֙ הַחֵ֔לֶב וְקַ֨ח־לְךָ֔ כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר תְּאַוֶּ֖ה נַפְשֶׁ֑ךָ וְאָמַ֥ר ׀ לו לֹא֙ כִּ֚י עַתָּ֣ה תִתֵּ֔ן וְאִם־לֹ֖א לָקַ֥חְתִּי בְחָזְקָֽה׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּehi֨y chatּa֧'t hanּe'ari֛ym gּedola֥h me'o֖d 'et-pּene֣y yehva֑h kּi֤y niֽ'atzu֙ haֽ'anashshi֔ym 'e֖t minecha֥t yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)This sin of the young men was very great in the LORD’s sight, for they were treating the LORD’s offering with contempt.

וַתְּהִ֨י חַטַּ֧את הַנְּעָרִ֛ים גְּדוֹלָ֥ה מְאֹ֖ד אֶת־פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה כִּ֤י נִֽאֲצוּ֙ הָֽאֲנָשִׁ֔ים אֵ֖ת מִנְחַ֥ת יְהוָֽה׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): ushshemu'e֕l meshshare֖t 'et-pּene֣y yehva֑h na֕'ar chag֖ur 'ep֥od bּaֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But Samuel was ministering before the LORD, a boy wearing a linen ephod.

וּשְׁמוּאֵ֕ל מְשָׁרֵ֖ת אֶת־פְּנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה נַ֕עַר חָג֖וּר אֵפ֥וֹד בָּֽד׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): ume'i֤yl qaton֙ tּa'ashseh-lּ֣o 'imּ֔o veha'aleta֥h l֖o miyּami֣ym ׀ yami֑ymah bּaֽ'alotahּ֙ 'et-'iyshsha֔hּ lizebּo֖cha 'et-ze֥bach hayּamiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Each year his mother made him a little robe and took it to him when she went up with her husband to offer the annual sacrifice.

וּמְעִ֤יל קָטֹן֙ תַּעֲשֶׂה־לּ֣וֹ אִמּ֔וֹ וְהַעַלְתָ֥ה ל֖וֹ מִיָּמִ֣ים ׀ יָמִ֑ימָה בַּֽעֲלוֹתָהּ֙ אֶת־אִישָׁ֔הּ לִזְבֹּ֖חַ אֶת־זֶ֥בַח הַיָּמִֽים׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubera֨ke 'eli֜y 'et-'eleqana֣h ve'et-'ishshetּ֗o ve'amar֙ yashsem֩ yehva֨h leka֥ ze֨ra'֙ min-ha'ishshּa֣h hazּo֔'t tּa֚chat hashshּe'ela֔h 'ashshe֥r shsha'a֖l laֽyhva֑h vehalek֖u limeqomֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife, saying, "May the LORD give you children by this woman to take the place of the one she prayed for and gave to the LORD." Then they would go home.

וּבֵרַ֨ךְ עֵלִ֜י אֶת־אֶלְקָנָ֣ה וְאֶת־אִשְׁתּ֗וֹ וְאָמַר֙ יָשֵׂם֩ יְהוָ֨ה לְךָ֥ זֶ֨רַע֙ מִן־הָאִשָּׁ֣ה הַזֹּ֔את תַּ֚חַת הַשְּׁאֵלָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֥ר שָׁאַ֖ל לַֽיהוָ֑ה וְהָלְכ֖וּ לִמְקֹמֽוֹ׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּiֽy-paqa֤d yehvah֙ 'et-chanּa֔h vatּa֛har vatּe֥led shsheloshshaֽh-bani֖ym ushshetּe֣y ban֑ot vayּigedּa֛l hanּa֥'ar shshemu'e֖l 'im-yehvaֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)And the LORD was gracious to Hannah; she gave birth to three sons and two daughters. Meanwhile, the boy Samuel grew up in the presence of the LORD.

כִּֽי־פָקַ֤ד יְהוָה֙ אֶת־חַנָּ֔ה וַתַּ֛הַר וַתֵּ֥לֶד שְׁלֹשָֽׁה־בָנִ֖ים וּשְׁתֵּ֣י בָנ֑וֹת וַיִּגְדַּ֛ל הַנַּ֥עַר שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל עִם־יְהוָֽה׃ס

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'eli֖y zaqe֣n me'o֑d veshshama֗ 'et֩ kּal-'ashshe֨r ya'ashs֤un bּanayv֙ lekal-yishsera'e֔l ve'e֤t 'ashsheֽr-yishshekּebun֙ 'et-hanּashshi֔ym hatzּo֣be'֔ot pּe֖tach 'o֥hel mo'eֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Eli, who was very old, heard about everything his sons were doing to all Israel and how they slept with the women who served at the entrance to the tent of meeting.

וְעֵלִ֖י זָקֵ֣ן מְאֹ֑ד וְשָׁמַ֗ע אֵת֩ כָּל־אֲשֶׁ֨ר יַעֲשׂ֤וּן בָּנָיו֙ לְכָל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְאֵ֤ת אֲשֶֽׁר־יִשְׁכְּבוּן֙ אֶת־הַנָּשִׁ֔ים הַצֹּ֣בְא֔וֹת פֶּ֖תַח אֹ֥הֶל מוֹעֵֽד׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer lahe֔m la֥mּah ta'ashs֖un kּadּebari֣ym ha'e֑lּeh 'ashshe֨r 'anoki֤y shshome֨'a֙ 'et-dּibereyke֣m ra'i֔ym me'e֖t kּal-ha'a֥m 'eֽlּeh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So he said to them, "Why do you do such things? I hear from all the people about these wicked deeds of yours.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר לָהֶ֔ם לָ֥מָּה תַעֲשׂ֖וּן כַּדְּבָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה אֲשֶׁ֨ר אָנֹכִ֤י שֹׁמֵ֨עַ֙ אֶת־דִּבְרֵיכֶ֣ם רָעִ֔ים מֵאֵ֖ת כָּל־הָעָ֥ם אֵֽלֶּה׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): a֖l bּana֑y kּi֠y lֽo'-toba֤h hashshּemu'ah֙ 'ashshe֣r 'anoki֣y shshome֔'a ma'abiri֖ym 'am-yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)No, my sons; the report I hear spreading among the LORD’s people is not good.

אַ֖ל בָּנָ֑י כִּ֠י לֽוֹא־טוֹבָ֤ה הַשְּׁמֻעָה֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר אָנֹכִ֣י שֹׁמֵ֔עַ מַעֲבִרִ֖ים עַם־יְהוָֽה׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): im-yecheta֨ 'i֤yshsh le'iyshsh֙ upiֽlel֣o 'elohi֔ym ve'i֤m laֽyhvah֙ yֽecheta'-'i֔yshsh mi֖y yitepּalּel-l֑o velo֤ yishsheme'u֙ leq֣ol 'abiyhe֔m kּiֽy-chape֥tz yehva֖h lahamiytaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)If one person sins against another, God may mediate for the offender; but if anyone sins against the LORD, who will intercede for them?" His sons, however, did not listen to their father’s rebuke, for it was the LORD’s will to put them to death.

אִם־יֶחֱטָ֨א אִ֤ישׁ לְאִישׁ֙ וּפִֽלְל֣וֹ אֱלֹהִ֔ים וְאִ֤ם לַֽיהוָה֙ יֶֽחֱטָא־אִ֔ישׁ מִ֖י יִתְפַּלֶּל־ל֑וֹ וְלֹ֤א יִשְׁמְעוּ֙ לְק֣וֹל אֲבִיהֶ֔ם כִּֽי־חָפֵ֥ץ יְהוָ֖ה לַהֲמִיתָֽם׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehanּa֣'ar shshemu'e֔l hole֥ke vegade֖l vat֑ob gּa֚m 'im-yehva֔h vega֖m 'im-'anashshiֽym׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)And the boy Samuel continued to grow in stature and in favour with the LORD and with people.

וְהַנַּ֣עַר שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל הֹלֵ֥ךְ וְגָדֵ֖ל וָט֑וֹב גַּ֚ם עִם־יְהוָ֔ה וְגַ֖ם עִם־אֲנָשִֽׁים׃ס

27
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֥ 'iyshsh-'elohi֖ym 'el-'eli֑y vayּo֣'mer 'ela֗yv kּo֚h 'ama֣r yehva֔h hanigelo֤h nigele֨ytiy֙ 'el-bּe֣yt 'abi֔yka bּiֽheyota֥m bּemitzera֖yim lebe֥yt pּare'oֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now a man of God came to Eli and said to him, "This is what the LORD says: 'Did I not clearly reveal myself to your ancestor’s family when they were in Egypt under Pharaoh?

וַיָּבֹ֥א אִישׁ־אֱלֹהִ֖ים אֶל־עֵלִ֑י וַיֹּ֣אמֶר אֵלָ֗יו כֹּ֚ה אָמַ֣ר יְהוָ֔ה הֲנִגְלֹ֤ה נִגְלֵ֨יתִי֙ אֶל־בֵּ֣ית אָבִ֔יךָ בִּֽהְיוֹתָ֥ם בְּמִצְרַ֖יִם לְבֵ֥ית פַּרְעֹֽה׃

28
Phonetic (Hebrew): ubacho֣r 'o֠to mikּal-shshibete֨y yishsera'e֥l liy֙ lekohe֔n la'al֣ot 'aֽl-mizebּechi֗y lehaqeti֥yr qeto֛ret lashse֥'t 'ep֖od lepana֑y vaֽ'etּenah֙ lebe֣yt 'abi֔yka 'et-kּal-'ishshּe֖y bּene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)I chose your ancestor out of all the tribes of Israel to be my priest, to go up to my altar, to burn incense, and to wear an ephod in my presence. I also gave your ancestor’s family all the food offerings presented by the Israelites.

וּבָחֹ֣ר אֹ֠תוֹ מִכָּל־שִׁבְטֵ֨י יִשְׂרָאֵ֥ל לִי֙ לְכֹהֵ֔ן לַעֲל֣וֹת עַֽל־מִזְבְּחִ֗י לְהַקְטִ֥יר קְטֹ֛רֶת לָשֵׂ֥את אֵפ֖וֹד לְפָנָ֑י וָֽאֶתְּנָה֙ לְבֵ֣ית אָבִ֔יךָ אֶת־כָּל־אִשֵּׁ֖י בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): la֣mּah tibe'at֗u bּezibechiy֙ ubeminechati֔y 'ashshe֥r tziui֖ytiy ma'֑on vatּekabּe֤d 'et-bּane֨yka֙ mimּe֔nּiy lehaberiֽy'ake֗m mere'shshi֛yt kּal-minecha֥t yishsera'e֖l le'amּiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Why do you scorn my sacrifice and offering that I prescribed for my dwelling? Why do you honour your sons more than me by fattening yourselves on the choice parts of every offering made by my people Israel?'

לָ֣מָּה תִבְעֲט֗וּ בְּזִבְחִי֙ וּבְמִנְחָתִ֔י אֲשֶׁ֥ר צִוִּ֖יתִי מָע֑וֹן וַתְּכַבֵּ֤ד אֶת־בָּנֶ֨יךָ֙ מִמֶּ֔נִּי לְהַבְרִֽיאֲכֶ֗ם מֵרֵאשִׁ֛ית כָּל־מִנְחַ֥ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל לְעַמִּֽי׃

30
Phonetic (Hebrew): lake֗n ne'um-yehvah֮ 'elohe֣y yishsera'el֒ 'am֣or 'ama֔retּiy bּeֽyteka֙ ube֣yt 'abi֔yka yitehalּek֥u lepana֖y 'ad-'ola֑m ve'atּa֤h ne'um-yehvah֙ chali֣ylah lּi֔y kּiֽy-mekabּeda֥y 'akabּe֖d uboza֥y yeqaֽlּu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Therefore the LORD, the God of Israel, declares: 'I promised that members of your family would minister before me forever.' But now the LORD declares: 'Far be it from me! Those who honour me I will honour, but those who despise me will be disdained.

לָכֵ֗ן נְאֻם־יְהוָה֮ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵל֒ אָמ֣וֹר אָמַ֔רְתִּי בֵּֽיתְךָ֙ וּבֵ֣ית אָבִ֔יךָ יִתְהַלְּכ֥וּ לְפָנַ֖י עַד־עוֹלָ֑ם וְעַתָּ֤ה נְאֻם־יְהוָה֙ חָלִ֣ילָה לִּ֔י כִּֽי־מְכַבְּדַ֥י אֲכַבֵּ֖ד וּבֹזַ֥י יֵקָֽלּוּ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): hinּeh֙ yami֣ym bּa'i֔ym vegaֽda'etּiy֙ 'et-zero֣'aka֔ ve'et-zero֖'a bּe֣yt 'abi֑yka miֽhey֥ot zaqe֖n bּebeyteֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The time is coming when I will cut short your strength and the strength of your ancestor’s family, so that no one in your family will reach old age,

הִנֵּה֙ יָמִ֣ים בָּאִ֔ים וְגָֽדַעְתִּי֙ אֶת־זְרֹ֣עֲךָ֔ וְאֶת־זְרֹ֖עַ בֵּ֣ית אָבִ֑יךָ מִֽהְי֥וֹת זָקֵ֖ן בְּבֵיתֶֽךָ׃

32
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehibּatetּa֙ tza֣r ma'֔on bּeko֥l 'ashsher-yeyti֖yb 'et-yishsera'e֑l veloֽ'-yiheye֥h zaqe֛n bּebeyteka֖ kּal-hayּamiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)and you will see distress in my dwelling. Although good will be done to Israel, no one in your family line will ever reach old age.

וְהִבַּטְתָּ֙ צַ֣ר מָע֔וֹן בְּכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־יֵיטִ֖יב אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וְלֹֽא־יִהְיֶ֥ה זָקֵ֛ן בְּבֵיתְךָ֖ כָּל־הַיָּמִֽים׃

33
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'i֗yshsh loֽ'-'akeri֤yt leka֙ me'i֣m mizebּechi֔y lekalּ֥ot 'et-'eyne֖yka vela'adi֣yb 'et-napeshshe֑ka vekal-marebּi֥yt bּeyteka֖ yam֥utu 'anashshiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Every one of you that I do not cut off from serving at my altar I will spare only to destroy your sight and sap your strength, and all your descendants will die in the prime of life.

וְאִ֗ישׁ לֹֽא־אַכְרִ֤ית לְךָ֙ מֵעִ֣ם מִזְבְּחִ֔י לְכַלּ֥וֹת אֶת־עֵינֶ֖יךָ וְלַאֲדִ֣יב אֶת־נַפְשֶׁ֑ךָ וְכָל־מַרְבִּ֥ית בֵּיתְךָ֖ יָמ֥וּתוּ אֲנָשִֽׁים׃

34
Phonetic (Hebrew): vezeh-lּeka֣ ha'֗ot 'ashshe֤r yabo'֙ 'el-shshene֣y bane֔yka 'el-chapeni֖y upiֽynecha֑s bּey֥om 'echa֖d yam֥utu shsheneyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"'And what happens to your two sons, Hophni and Phinehas, will be a sign to you, they will both die on the same day.

וְזֶה־לְּךָ֣ הָא֗וֹת אֲשֶׁ֤ר יָבֹא֙ אֶל־שְׁנֵ֣י בָנֶ֔יךָ אֶל־חָפְנִ֖י וּפִֽינְחָ֑ס בְּי֥וֹם אֶחָ֖ד יָמ֥וּתוּ שְׁנֵיהֶֽם׃

35
Phonetic (Hebrew): vahaqiymoti֥y liy֙ kּohe֣n ne'ema֔n kּa'ashshe֛r bּilebabi֥y ubenapeshshi֖y ya'ashse֑h ubani֤ytiy lo֙ bּa֣yit ne'ema֔n vehitehalּe֥ke lipeneֽy-meshshiychi֖y kּal-hayּamiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)I will raise up for myself a faithful priest, who will do according to what is in my heart and mind. I will firmly establish his priestly house, and they will minister before my anointed one always.

וַהֲקִימֹתִ֥י לִי֙ כֹּהֵ֣ן נֶאֱמָ֔ן כַּאֲשֶׁ֛ר בִּלְבָבִ֥י וּבְנַפְשִׁ֖י יַעֲשֶׂ֑ה וּבָנִ֤יתִי לוֹ֙ בַּ֣יִת נֶאֱמָ֔ן וְהִתְהַלֵּ֥ךְ לִפְנֵֽי־מְשִׁיחִ֖י כָּל־הַיָּמִֽים׃

36
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaya֗h kּal-hanּotar֙ bּebe֣yteka֔ yabo'֙ lehishshetּachavo֣t l֔o la'ag֥orat kּe֖sep vekikּar-la֑chem ve'ama֗r sepache֥niy na֛ 'el-'acha֥t hakּehunּ֖ot le'eko֥l pּat-laֽchem׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Then everyone left in your family line will come and bow down before him for a piece of silver and a loaf of bread and plead, "Appoint me to some priestly office so I can have food to eat."'" Religious corruption demanded a holy reset.

וְהָיָ֗ה כָּל־הַנּוֹתָר֙ בְּבֵ֣יתְךָ֔ יָבוֹא֙ לְהִשְׁתַּחֲוֺ֣ת ל֔וֹ לַאֲג֥וֹרַת כֶּ֖סֶף וְכִכַּר־לָ֑חֶם וְאָמַ֗ר סְפָחֵ֥נִי נָ֛א אֶל־אַחַ֥ת הַכְּהֻנּ֖וֹת לֶאֱכֹ֥ל פַּת־לָֽחֶם׃ס
