Chapter 23
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּagּi֥du ledavi֖d le'mo֑r hinּe֤h pelishshetּiym֙ nilechami֣ym bּiqe'iyla֔h vehe֖mּah shshosi֥ym 'et-hagּoranֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When David was told, "Look, the Philistines are fighting against Keilah and are looting the threshing-floors,"

וַיַּגִּ֥דוּ לְדָוִ֖ד לֵאמֹ֑ר הִנֵּ֤ה פְלִשְׁתִּים֙ נִלְחָמִ֣ים בִּקְעִילָ֔ה וְהֵ֖מָּה שֹׁסִ֥ים אֶת־הַגֳּרָנֽוֹת׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshe'a֨l dּavi֤d bּaֽyhvah֙ le'mo֔r ha'ele֣ke vehikּe֔ytiy bּapּelishshetּi֖ym ha'e֑lּeh s vayּo֨'mer yehva֜h 'el-dּavi֗d le֚ke vehikּi֣yta bapּelishshetּi֔ym vehoshsha'etּa֖ 'et-qe'iylaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)he inquired of the LORD, "Shall I go and attack these Philistines?" the LORD answered him, "Go, attack the Philistines and save Keilah."

וַיִּשְׁאַ֨ל דָּוִ֤ד בַּֽיהוָה֙ לֵאמֹ֔ר הַאֵלֵ֣ךְ וְהִכֵּ֔יתִי בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים הָאֵ֑לֶּה ס וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֜ה אֶל־דָּוִ֗ד לֵ֚ךְ וְהִכִּ֣יתָ בַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וְהוֹשַׁעְתָּ֖ אֶת־קְעִילָֽה׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer֜u 'aneshshe֤y david֙ 'ela֔yv hinּe֨h 'ana֥chenu po֛h bּiֽyhuda֖h yere'i֑ym ve'ap֙ kּiֽy-nele֣ke qe'ila֔h 'el-mֽa'arek֖ot pּelishshetּiֽym׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)But David’s men said to him, "Here in Judah we are afraid. How much more, then, if we go to Keilah against the Philistine forces!"

וַיֹּ֨אמְר֜וּ אַנְשֵׁ֤י דָוִד֙ אֵלָ֔יו הִנֵּ֨ה אֲנַ֥חְנוּ פֹ֛ה בִּֽיהוּדָ֖ה יְרֵאִ֑ים וְאַף֙ כִּֽי־נֵלֵ֣ךְ קְעִלָ֔ה אֶל־מַֽעַרְכ֖וֹת פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃ס

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּ֨osep '֤od dּavid֙ lishshe'o֣l bּaֽyhva֔h s vaֽyּa'ane֖hu yehva֑h vayּo֗'mer q֚um re֣d qe'iyla֔h kּiֽy-'ani֥y note֛n 'et-pּelishshetּi֖ym bּeyadeֽka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Once again David inquired of the LORD, and the LORD answered him, "Go down to Keilah, for I am going to give the Philistines into your hand."

וַיּ֨וֹסֶף ע֤וֹד דָּוִד֙ לִשְׁאֹ֣ל בַּֽיהוָ֔ה ס וַֽיַּעֲנֵ֖הוּ יְהוָ֑ה וַיֹּ֗אמֶר ק֚וּם רֵ֣ד קְעִילָ֔ה כִּֽי־אֲנִ֥י נֹתֵ֛ן אֶת־פְּלִשְׁתִּ֖ים בְּיָדֶֽךָ׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֣leke dּavid֩ v'nshv va'anashsha֨yv qe'iyla֜h vayּilּa֣chem bּapּelishshetּi֗ym vayּinehag֙ 'et-miqeneyhe֔m vayּa֥ke bּahe֖m makּa֣h gedola֑h vayּo֣shsha dּavi֔d 'e֖t yoshshebe֥y qe'iylaֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)So David and his men went to Keilah, fought the Philistines and carried off their livestock. He inflicted heavy losses on the Philistines and saved the people of Keilah.

וַיֵּ֣לֶךְ דָּוִד֩ ואנשו וַאֲנָשָׁ֨יו קְעִילָ֜ה וַיִּלָּ֣חֶם בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּ֗ים וַיִּנְהַג֙ אֶת־מִקְנֵיהֶ֔ם וַיַּ֥ךְ בָּהֶ֖ם מַכָּ֣ה גְדוֹלָ֑ה וַיֹּ֣שַׁע דָּוִ֔ד אֵ֖ת יֹשְׁבֵ֥י קְעִילָֽה׃ס

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y bּi֠berocha 'ebeyata֧r bּen-'achiyme֛leke 'el-dּavi֖d qe'iyla֑h 'ep֖od yara֥d bּeyadֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)(Now Abiathar son of Ahimelek had brought the ephod with him when he fled to David at Keilah.)

וַיְהִ֗י בִּ֠בְרֹחַ אֶבְיָתָ֧ר בֶּן־אֲחִימֶ֛לֶךְ אֶל־דָּוִ֖ד קְעִילָ֑ה אֵפ֖וֹד יָרַ֥ד בְּיָדֽוֹ׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּugּa֣d leshsha'֔ul kּiy-ba֥ davi֖d qe'iyla֑h vayּo֣'mer shsha'֗ul nikּa֨r 'ot֤o 'elohiym֙ bּeyadi֔y kּi֚y nisegּa֣r lab֔o bּe'i֖yr dּelata֥yim uberiֽycha׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Saul was told that David had gone to Keilah, and he said, "God has delivered him into my hands, for he has imprisoned himself by entering a town with gates and bars."

וַיֻּגַּ֣ד לְשָׁא֔וּל כִּי־בָ֥א דָוִ֖ד קְעִילָ֑ה וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שָׁא֗וּל נִכַּ֨ר אֹת֤וֹ אֱלֹהִים֙ בְּיָדִ֔י כִּ֚י נִסְגַּ֣ר לָב֔וֹא בְּעִ֖יר דְּלָתַ֥יִם וּבְרִֽיחַ׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayeshshamּa֥ shsha'֛ul 'et-kּal-ha'a֖m lamּilechama֑h lare֣det qe'iyla֔h latz֥ur 'el-dּavi֖d ve'el-'anashshaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And Saul called up all his forces for battle, to go down to Keilah to besiege David and his men.

וַיְשַׁמַּ֥ע שָׁא֛וּל אֶת־כָּל־הָעָ֖ם לַמִּלְחָמָ֑ה לָרֶ֣דֶת קְעִילָ֔ה לָצ֥וּר אֶל־דָּוִ֖ד וְאֶל־אֲנָשָֽׁיו׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֣da dּavi֔d kּi֣y 'ala֔yv shsha'֖ul machari֣yshsh hara'a֑h vayּo֨'mer֙ 'el-'ebeyata֣r hakּohe֔n hagּi֖yshshah ha'epֽod׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)When David learned that Saul was plotting against him, he said to Abiathar the priest, "Bring the ephod."

וַיֵּ֣דַע דָּוִ֔ד כִּ֣י עָלָ֔יו שָׁא֖וּל מַחֲרִ֣ישׁ הָרָעָ֑ה וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ אֶל־אֶבְיָתָ֣ר הַכֹּהֵ֔ן הַגִּ֖ישָׁה הָאֵפֽוֹד׃ס

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֮ dּavid֒ yehvah֙ 'elohe֣y yishsera'e֔l shshamo֤'a shshama'֙ 'abedּeka֔ kּiֽy-mebaqּe֥shsh shsha'֖ul lab֣o 'el-qe'iyla֑h leshshache֥t la'i֖yr bּa'aburiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)David said, "The LORD, God of Israel, your servant has heard definitely that Saul plans to come to Keilah and destroy the town on my account.

וַיֹּאמֶר֮ דָּוִד֒ יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל שָׁמֹ֤עַ שָׁמַע֙ עַבְדְּךָ֔ כִּֽי־מְבַקֵּ֥שׁ שָׁא֖וּל לָב֣וֹא אֶל־קְעִילָ֑ה לְשַׁחֵ֥ת לָעִ֖יר בַּעֲבוּרִֽי׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): hayasegּiru֣niy ba'aley֩ qe'iyla֨h beyad֜o hayere֣d shsha'֗ul kּaֽ'ashsher֙ shshama֣ 'abedּe֔ka yehvah֙ 'elohe֣y yishsera'e֔l hagּed-na֖ le'abedּe֑ka s vayּo֥'mer yehva֖h yereֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Will the citizens of Keilah surrender me to him? Will Saul come down, as your servant has heard? the LORD, God of Israel, tell your servant." And the LORD said, "He will."

הֲיַסְגִּרֻ֣נִי בַעֲלֵי֩ קְעִילָ֨ה בְיָד֜וֹ הֲיֵרֵ֣ד שָׁא֗וּל כַּֽאֲשֶׁר֙ שָׁמַ֣ע עַבְדֶּ֔ךָ יְהוָה֙ אֱלֹהֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל הַגֶּד־נָ֖א לְעַבְדֶּ֑ךָ ס וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה יֵרֵֽד׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer dּavi֔d hayasegּi֜ru bּa'ale֧y qe'iyla֛h 'oti֥y ve'et-'anashsha֖y bּeyad-shsha'֑ul vayּo֥'mer yehva֖h yasegּiֽyru׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Again David asked, "Will the citizens of Keilah surrender me and my men to Saul?" And the LORD said, "They will."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר דָּוִ֔ד הֲיַסְגִּ֜רוּ בַּעֲלֵ֧י קְעִילָ֛ה אֹתִ֥י וְאֶת־אֲנָשַׁ֖י בְּיַד־שָׁא֑וּל וַיֹּ֥אמֶר יְהוָ֖ה יַסְגִּֽירוּ׃ס

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּaqam֩ dּavi֨d va'anashsha֜yv kּeshsheshsh-me'֣ot 'i֗yshsh vayּetze'u֙ miqּe'ila֔h vayּiֽtehalּek֖u bּa'ashshe֣r yitehalּa֑ku uleshsha'֣ul hugּa֗d kּiֽy-nimela֤t dּavid֙ miqּe'iyla֔h vayּechedּa֖l latzeֽ't׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So David and his men, about six hundred in number, left Keilah and kept on the move from place to place. When Saul was told that David had escaped from Keilah, he did not go there.

וַיָּקָם֩ דָּוִ֨ד וַאֲנָשָׁ֜יו כְּשֵׁשׁ־מֵא֣וֹת אִ֗ישׁ וַיֵּצְאוּ֙ מִקְּעִלָ֔ה וַיִּֽתְהַלְּכ֖וּ בַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר יִתְהַלָּ֑כוּ וּלְשָׁא֣וּל הֻגַּ֗ד כִּֽי־נִמְלַ֤ט דָּוִד֙ מִקְּעִילָ֔ה וַיֶּחְדַּ֖ל לָצֵֽאת׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֨shsheb dּavi֤d bּamּidebּar֙ bּamּetzad֔ot vayּe֥shsheb bּaha֖r bּemidebּar-zi֑yp vayebaqeshshe֤hu shsha'ul֙ kּal-hayּami֔ym veloֽ'-netan֥o 'elohi֖ym bּeyadֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)David stayed in the wilderness strongholds and in the hills of the Desert of Ziph. Day after day Saul searched for him, but God did not give David into his hands.

וַיֵּ֨שֶׁב דָּוִ֤ד בַּמִּדְבָּר֙ בַּמְּצָד֔וֹת וַיֵּ֥שֶׁב בָּהָ֖ר בְּמִדְבַּר־זִ֑יף וַיְבַקְשֵׁ֤הוּ שָׁאוּל֙ כָּל־הַיָּמִ֔ים וְלֹֽא־נְתָנ֥וֹ אֱלֹהִ֖ים בְּיָדֽוֹ׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣re davi֔d kּiֽy-yatza֥ shsha'֖ul lebaqּe֣shsh 'et-napeshsh֑o vedavi֥d bּemidebּar-zi֖yp bּachoֽreshshah׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)While David was at Horesh in the Desert of Ziph, he learned that Saul had come out to take his life.

וַיַּ֣רְא דָוִ֔ד כִּֽי־יָצָ֥א שָׁא֖וּל לְבַקֵּ֣שׁ אֶת־נַפְשׁ֑וֹ וְדָוִ֥ד בְּמִדְבַּר־זִ֖יף בַּחֹֽרְשָׁה׃ס

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨qam֙ yehonata֣n bּen-shsha'֔ul vayּe֥leke 'el-dּavi֖d cho֑reshshah vayechazּe֥q 'et-yad֖o bּe'lohiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And Saul’s son Jonathan went to David at Horesh and helped him find strength in God.

וַיָּ֨קָם֙ יְהוֹנָתָ֣ן בֶּן־שָׁא֔וּל וַיֵּ֥לֶךְ אֶל־דָּוִ֖ד חֹ֑רְשָׁה וַיְחַזֵּ֥ק אֶת־יָד֖וֹ בֵּאלֹהִֽים׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer 'ela֜yv 'al-tּiyra֗ kּi֠y lo֤ tiֽmetza'aka֙ ya֚d shsha'֣ul 'abi֔y ve'atּah֙ tּimelo֣ke 'al-yishsera'e֔l ve'anoki֖y 'eֽheyeh-lּeka֣ lemishshene֑h vegam-shsha'֥ul 'abi֖y yode֥'a kּeֽn׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"Don’t be afraid," he said. "My father Saul will not lay a hand on you. You will be king over Israel, and I will be second to you. Even my father Saul knows this."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר אֵלָ֜יו אַל־תִּירָ֗א כִּ֠י לֹ֤א תִֽמְצָאֲךָ֙ יַ֚ד שָׁא֣וּל אָבִ֔י וְאַתָּה֙ תִּמְלֹ֣ךְ עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וְאָנֹכִ֖י אֶֽהְיֶה־לְּךָ֣ לְמִשְׁנֶ֑ה וְגַם־שָׁא֥וּל אָבִ֖י יֹדֵ֥עַ כֵּֽן׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּikeret֧u shsheneyhe֛m bּeri֖yt lipene֣y yehva֑h vayּe֤shsheb dּavid֙ bּacho֔reshshah viyhonata֖n hala֥ke lebeytֽo׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)The two of them made a covenant before the LORD. Then Jonathan went home, but David remained at Horesh.

וַיִּכְרְת֧וּ שְׁנֵיהֶ֛ם בְּרִ֖ית לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וַיֵּ֤שֶׁב דָּוִד֙ בַּחֹ֔רְשָׁה וִיהוֹנָתָ֖ן הָלַ֥ךְ לְבֵיתֽוֹ׃ס

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa'al֤u zipiym֙ 'el-shsha'֔ul hagּibe'a֖tah le'mo֑r hal֣o da֠vid misetּatּe֨r 'imּa֤nu bamּetzadot֙ bּacho֔reshshah bּegibe'at֙ haֽchakiyla֔h 'ashshe֖r miymi֥yn hayeshshiymֽon׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The Ziphites went up to Saul at Gibeah and said, "Is not David hiding among us in the strongholds at Horesh, on the hill of Hakilah, south of Jeshimon?

וַיַּעֲל֤וּ זִפִים֙ אֶל־שָׁא֔וּל הַגִּבְעָ֖תָה לֵאמֹ֑ר הֲל֣וֹא דָ֠וִד מִסְתַּתֵּ֨ר עִמָּ֤נוּ בַמְּצָדוֹת֙ בַּחֹ֔רְשָׁה בְּגִבְעַת֙ הַֽחֲכִילָ֔ה אֲשֶׁ֖ר מִימִ֥ין הַיְשִׁימֽוֹן׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve֠'atּah lekal-'aua֨t napeshsheka֥ hamּe֛leke lare֖det re֑d vela֥nu hasegּiyr֖o bּeya֥d hamּeֽleke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now, Your Majesty, come down whenever it pleases you to do so, and we will be responsible for giving him into your hands."

וְ֠עַתָּה לְכָל־אַוַּ֨ת נַפְשְׁךָ֥ הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ לָרֶ֖דֶת רֵ֑ד וְלָ֥נוּ הַסְגִּיר֖וֹ בְּיַ֥ד הַמֶּֽלֶךְ׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer shsha'֔ul bּeruki֥ym 'atּe֖m laֽyhva֑h kּi֥y chamaletּe֖m 'alaֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Saul replied, "The LORD bless you for your concern for me.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שָׁא֔וּל בְּרוּכִ֥ים אַתֶּ֖ם לַֽיהוָ֑ה כִּ֥י חֲמַלְתֶּ֖ם עָלָֽי׃

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): leku-na֞ haki֣ynu '֗od ude'֤u ure'u֙ 'et-meqomo֙ 'ashshe֣r tּiֽheye֣h ragel֔o mi֥y ra'a֖hu shsha֑m kּi֚y 'ama֣r 'ela֔y 'ar֥om ya'eri֖m hֽu'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Go and make further preparation. Find out where David usually goes and who has seen him there. They tell me he is very crafty.

לְכוּ־נָ֞א הָכִ֣ינוּ ע֗וֹד וּדְע֤וּ וּרְאוּ֙ אֶת־מְקוֹמוֹ֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר תִּֽהְיֶ֣ה רַגְל֔וֹ מִ֥י רָאָ֖הוּ שָׁ֑ם כִּ֚י אָמַ֣ר אֵלַ֔י עָר֥וֹם יַעְרִ֖ם הֽוּא׃

23
Phonetic (Hebrew): ure'֣u ude'֗u mikּo֤l hamּaֽchabo'iym֙ 'ashshe֣r yitechabּe֣ shsha֔m veshshabetּe֤m 'elay֙ 'el-nak֔on vehalaketּi֖y 'itּeke֑m vehayah֙ 'im-yeshshen֣o ba'a֔retz vechipּashsetּi֣y 'ot֔o bּeko֖l 'alepe֥y yehudaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Find out about all the hiding places he uses and come back to me with definite information. Then I will go with you; if he is in the area, I will track him down among all the clans of Judah."

וּרְא֣וּ וּדְע֗וּ מִכֹּ֤ל הַמַּֽחֲבֹאִים֙ אֲשֶׁ֣ר יִתְחַבֵּ֣א שָׁ֔ם וְשַׁבְתֶּ֤ם אֵלַי֙ אֶל־נָכ֔וֹן וְהָלַכְתִּ֖י אִתְּכֶ֑ם וְהָיָה֙ אִם־יֶשְׁנ֣וֹ בָאָ֔רֶץ וְחִפַּשְׂתִּ֣י אֹת֔וֹ בְּכֹ֖ל אַלְפֵ֥י יְהוּדָֽה׃

24
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּaq֛umu vayּelek֥u zi֖ypah lipene֣y shsha'֑ul vedavi֨d va'anashsha֜yv bּemidebּa֤r ma'on֙ bּa'araba֔h 'e֖l yemi֥yn hayeshshiymֽon׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So they set out and went to Ziph ahead of Saul. Now David and his men were in the Desert of Maon, in the Arabah south of Jeshimon.

וַיָּק֛וּמוּ וַיֵּלְכ֥וּ זִ֖יפָה לִפְנֵ֣י שָׁא֑וּל וְדָוִ֨ד וַאֲנָשָׁ֜יו בְּמִדְבַּ֤ר מָעוֹן֙ בָּעֲרָבָ֔ה אֶ֖ל יְמִ֥ין הַיְשִׁימֽוֹן׃

25
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֨leke shsha'֣ul va'anashshayv֮ lebaqּeshsh֒ vayּagּi֣du ledavi֔d vayּe֣red hasּe֔la vayּe֖shsheb bּemidebּa֣r ma'֑on vayּishshema֣ shsha'֔ul vayּiredּo֥p 'achareֽy-davi֖d midebּa֥r ma'ֽon׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Saul and his men began the search, and when David was told about it, he went down to the rock and stayed in the Desert of Maon. When Saul heard this, he went into the Desert of Maon in pursuit of David.

וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ שָׁא֣וּל וַאֲנָשָׁיו֮ לְבַקֵּשׁ֒ וַיַּגִּ֣דוּ לְדָוִ֔ד וַיֵּ֣רֶד הַסֶּ֔לַע וַיֵּ֖שֶׁב בְּמִדְבַּ֣ר מָע֑וֹן וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע שָׁא֔וּל וַיִּרְדֹּ֥ף אַחֲרֵֽי־דָוִ֖ד מִדְבַּ֥ר מָעֽוֹן׃

26
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֨leke shsha'֜ul mitzּa֤d hahar֙ mizּe֔h vedavi֧d va'anashsha֛yv mitzּa֥d haha֖r mizּe֑h vayehi֨y davi֜d nechepּa֤z lale֨ket֙ mipּene֣y shsha'֔ul veshsha'֣ul va'anashsha֗yv 'oֽteri֛ym 'el-dּavi֥d ve'el-'anashsha֖yv letapeshsaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Saul was going along one side of the mountain, and David and his men were on the other side, hurrying to get away from Saul. As Saul and his forces were closing in on David and his men to capture them,

וַיֵּ֨לֶךְ שָׁא֜וּל מִצַּ֤ד הָהָר֙ מִזֶּ֔ה וְדָוִ֧ד וַאֲנָשָׁ֛יו מִצַּ֥ד הָהָ֖ר מִזֶּ֑ה וַיְהִ֨י דָוִ֜ד נֶחְפָּ֤ז לָלֶ֨כֶת֙ מִפְּנֵ֣י שָׁא֔וּל וְשָׁא֣וּל וַאֲנָשָׁ֗יו עֹֽטְרִ֛ים אֶל־דָּוִ֥ד וְאֶל־אֲנָשָׁ֖יו לְתָפְשָֽׂם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): umale'a֣ke bּa֔ 'el-shsha'֖ul le'mo֑r mahara֣h vele֔kah kּiֽy-pashshet֥u pelishshetּi֖ym 'al-ha'aֽretz׃
Edified Edition (EDE)a messenger came to Saul, saying, "Come quickly! The Philistines are raiding the land."

וּמַלְאָ֣ךְ בָּ֔א אֶל־שָׁא֖וּל לֵאמֹ֑ר מַהֲרָ֣ה וְלֵ֔כָה כִּֽי־פָשְׁט֥וּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים עַל־הָאָֽרֶץ׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣shshab shsha'֗ul miredop֙ 'achare֣y davi֔d vayּe֖leke liqera֣'t pּelishshetּi֑ym 'al-kּe֗n qaֽre'u֙ lamּaq֣om hah֔u se֖la haֽmּacheleqֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Saul broke off his pursuit of David and went to meet the Philistines. That is why they call this place Sela Hammahlekoth.

וַיָּ֣שָׁב שָׁא֗וּל מִרְדֹף֙ אַחֲרֵ֣י דָוִ֔ד וַיֵּ֖לֶךְ לִקְרַ֣את פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים עַל־כֵּ֗ן קָֽרְאוּ֙ לַמָּק֣וֹם הַה֔וּא סֶ֖לַע הַֽמַּחְלְקֽוֹת׃
