Phonetic (Hebrew): vehanּa֧'ar shshemu'e֛l meshshare֥t 'et-yehva֖h lipene֣y 'eli֑y udebar-yehva֗h haya֤h yaqar֙ bּayּami֣ym hahe֔m 'e֥yn chaz֖on niperaֽtz׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)The boy Samuel ministered before the LORD under Eli. In those days the word of the LORD was rare; there were not many visions.

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyehiy֙ bּayּ֣om hah֔u ve'eli֖y shshoke֣b bּimeqom֑o v'ynv ve'eynayv֙ heche֣lּu keh֔ot lo֥ yuka֖l lire'ֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)One night Eli, whose eyes were becoming so weak that he could barely see, was lying down in his usual place.

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vene֤r 'elohiym֙ te֣rem yikebּe֔h ushshemu'e֖l shshoke֑b bּeheyka֣l yehva֔h 'ashsher-shsha֖m 'ar֥on 'elohiֽym׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)The lamp of God had not yet gone out, and Samuel was lying down in the house of the LORD, where the ark of God was.

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֧ yehva֛h 'el-shshemu'e֖l vayּo֥'mer hinּeֽniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then the LORD called Samuel. Samuel answered, "Here I am."

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֣ratz 'el-'eli֗y vayּo֤'mer hineniy֙ kּiֽy-qara֣'ta lּi֔y vayּo֥'mer loֽ'-qara֖'tiy shsh֣ub shsheka֑b vayּe֖leke vayּishshekּaֽb׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)And he ran to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." But Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down." So he went and lay down.

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣sep yehva֗h qero֣ 'od֮ shshemu'el֒ vayּa֤qam shshemu'el֙ vayּe֣leke 'el-'eli֔y vayּo֣'mer hineni֔y kּi֥y qara֖'ta li֑y vayּo֛'mer loֽ'-qara֥'tiy beni֖y shsh֥ub shshekaֽb׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Again the LORD called, "Samuel!" And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." "My son," Eli said, "I did not call; go back and lie down."

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): ushshemu'e֕l te֖rem yada֣ 'et-yehva֑h vete֛rem yigּale֥h 'ela֖yv dּebar-yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Now Samuel did not yet know the LORD: The word of the LORD had not yet been revealed to him.

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨sep yehva֥h qero'-shshemu'el֮ bּashshּelishshiyt֒ vayּa֨qam֙ vayּe֣leke 'el-'eli֔y vayּo֣'mer hineni֔y kּi֥y qara֖'ta li֑y vayּa֣ben 'eli֔y kּi֥y yehva֖h qore֥ lanּaֽ'ar׃
Edified Edition (EDE)A third time the LORD called, "Samuel!" And Samuel got up and went to Eli and said, "Here I am; you called me." Then Eli realised that the LORD was calling the boy.

Edified Edition (EDE)So Eli told Samuel, "Go and lie down, and if he calls you, say, 'Speak, the LORD, for your servant is listening.'" So Samuel went and lay down in his place.

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֤ yehvah֙ vayּiteyatzּa֔b vayּiqera֥ kepaֽ'am-bּepa֖'am shshemu'e֣l ׀ shshemu'e֑l vayּo֤'mer shshemu'el֙ dּabּe֔r kּi֥y shshome֖'a 'abedּeֽka׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD came and stood there, calling as at the other times, "Samuel! Samuel!" Then Samuel said, "Speak, for your servant is listening."

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer yehvah֙ 'el-shshemu'e֔l hinּe֧h 'anoki֛y 'oshse֥h daba֖r bּeyishsera'e֑l 'ashsher֙ kּal-shsho֣me'֔o tּetzilּe֖ynah shshetּe֥y 'azenaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And the LORD said to Samuel: "See, I am about to do something in Israel that will make the ears of everyone who hears about it tingle.

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): bּayּ֤om hahu'֙ 'aqi֣ym 'el-'eli֔y 'e֛t kּal-'ashshe֥r dּibּa֖retּiy 'el-bּeyt֑o hache֖l vekalּeֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)At that time I will carry out against Eli everything I spoke against his family, from beginning to end.

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehigּa֣detּiy l֔o kּiֽy-shshope֥t 'ani֛y 'et-bּeyt֖o 'ad-'ola֑m bּa'avo֣n 'ashsher-yada֗ kּiֽy-meqaֽleli֤ym lahem֙ bּana֔yv velo֥ kiha֖h bּaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)For I told him that I would judge his family forever because of the sin he knew about; his sons made themselves contemptible, and he failed to restrain them.

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): velake֥n nishshebּa֖'etּiy lebe֣yt 'eli֑y 'iֽm-yitekּapּe֞r 'avo֧n bּeyt-'eli֛y bּeze֥bach ubeminecha֖h 'ad-'olaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore I swore to the house of Eli, 'The guilt of Eli’s house will never be atoned for by sacrifice or offering.'"

15

Edified Edition (EDE)Samuel lay down until morning and then opened the doors of the house of the LORD. He was afraid to tell Eli the vision,

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֤ 'eliy֙ 'et-shshemu'e֔l vayּo֖'mer shshemu'e֣l bּeni֑y vayּo֖'mer hinּeֽniy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)but Eli called him and said, "Samuel, my son." Samuel answered, "Here I am."

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֗'mer ma֤h hadּabar֙ 'ashshe֣r dּibּe֣r 'ele֔yka 'al-na֥ tekache֖d mimּe֑nּiy kּo֣h ya'ashseh-lּeka֤ 'elohiym֙ veko֣h yosi֔yp 'im-tּekache֤d mimּe֨nּiy֙ dּaba֔r mikּal-hadּaba֖r 'ashsher-dּibּe֥r 'eleֽyka׃
Edified Edition (EDE)"What was it he said to you?" Eli asked. "Do not hide it from me. May God deal with you, be it ever so severely, if you hide from me anything he told you."

18

Edified Edition (EDE)So Samuel told him everything, hiding nothing from him. Then Eli said, "He is the LORD; let him do what is good in his eyes."

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּigedּa֖l shshemu'e֑l vaֽyhvah֙ haya֣h 'imּ֔o veloֽ'-hipּi֥yl mikּal-dּebara֖yv 'aֽretzah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD was with Samuel as he grew up, and he let none of Samuel’s words fall to the ground.

20

Edified Edition (EDE)And all Israel from Dan to Beersheba recognised that Samuel was attested as a prophet of the LORD.

Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD continued to appear at Shiloh, and there he revealed himself to Samuel through his word.
