1
Edified Edition (EDE)After the Philistines had captured the ark of God, they took it from Ebenezer to Ashdod.

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqech֤u pelishshetּiym֙ 'et-'ar֣on ha'elohi֔ym vayּabi֥y'u 'ot֖o bּe֣yt dּag֑on vayּatzּi֥ygu 'ot֖o 'e֥tzel dּagֽon׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They carried the ark into Dagon [1]'s temple and set it beside Dagon.

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashshekּi֤mu 'ashshedּodiym֙ miֽmּachora֔t vehinּe֣h dag֗on nope֤l lepanayv֙ 'a֔retzah lipene֖y 'ar֣on yehva֑h vayּiqechu֙ 'et-dּag֔on vayּashshi֥bu 'ot֖o limeqomֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When the people of Ashdod rose early the next day, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the LORD! They took Dagon and put him back in his place.

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּashshekּi֣mu babּoqer֮ miֽmּachorat֒ vehinּe֣h dag֗on nope֤l lepanayv֙ 'a֔retzah lipene֖y 'ar֣on yehva֑h vero֨'shsh dּag֜on ushshetּe֣y ׀ kּapּ֣ot yada֗yv kּerutot֙ 'el-hamּipetּa֔n ra֥q dּag֖on nishshe'a֥r 'alaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But the following morning when they rose, there was Dagon, fallen on his face on the ground before the ark of the LORD! His head and hands had been broken off and were lying on the threshold; only his body remained.

Phonetic (Hebrew): al-kּe֡n loֽ'-yidereku֩ kohane֨y dag֜on vekaֽl-habּa'i֧ym bּeyt-dּag֛on 'al-mipetּa֥n dּag֖on bּe'ashshedּ֑od 'a֖d hayּ֥om hazּeֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)That is why to this day neither the priests of Dagon nor any others who enter Dagon’s temple at Ashdod step on the threshold.

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּikebּa֧d yad-yehva֛h 'el-ha'ashshedּodi֖ym vayeshshimּe֑m vayּa֤ke 'otam֙ b'plym bּatּechori֔ym 'et-'ashshedּ֖od ve'et-gּebuleֽyha׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD’s hand was heavy on the people of Ashdod and its vicinity; he brought devastation on them and afflicted them with tumours.

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּire'֥u 'aneshsheֽy-'ashshedּ֖od kּiֽy-ke֑n ve'amer֗u loֽ'-yeshshe֞b 'ar֨on 'elohe֤y yishsera'el֙ 'imּa֔nu kּiֽy-qashsheta֤h yado֙ 'ale֔ynu ve'a֖l dּag֥on 'eloheֽynu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When the people of Ashdod saw what was happening, they said, "The ark of the god of Israel must not stay here with us, because his hand is heavy on us and on Dagon our god."

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshelech֡u vayּa'asepu֩ 'et-kּal-sarene֨y pelishshetּi֜ym 'aleyhe֗m vayּoֽ'meru֙ maֽh-nּa'ashse֗h laֽ'aron֙ 'elohe֣y yishsera'e֔l vayּo֣'mer֔u gּa֣t yisּo֔b 'ar֖on 'elohe֣y yishsera'e֑l vayּasּe֕bּu 'et-'ar֖on 'elohe֥y yishsera'eֽl׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and asked them, "What shall we do with the ark of the god of Israel?" They answered, "Move the ark of the god of Israel to Gath." So they moved the ark of the god of Israel.

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֞y 'achare֣y ׀ hesa֣bּu 'ot֗o vatּehi֨y yad-yehva֤h ׀ bּa'iyr֙ mehumah֙ gּedola֣h me'o֔d vayּake֙ 'et-'aneshshe֣y ha'i֔yr miqּato֖n ve'ad-gּad֑ol vayּishsּater֥u lahe֖m 'plym techoriֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But after they had moved it, the LORD’s hand was against that city, throwing it into a great panic. He afflicted the people of the city, both young and old, with an outbreak of tumours.

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyeshshalּech֛u 'et-'ar֥on ha'elohi֖ym 'eqer֑on vayehi֗y kּeb֨o 'ar֤on ha'elohiym֙ 'eqer֔on vayּize'aq֨u haֽ'eqeroni֜ym le'mo֗r hesa֤bּu 'elay֙ 'et-'aron֙ 'elohe֣y yishsera'e֔l lahamiyte֖niy ve'et-'amּiֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So they sent the ark of God to Ekron. As the ark of God was entering Ekron, the people of Ekron cried out, "They have brought the ark of the god of Israel to us for the purpose of killing us and our people."

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshelech֨u vayּa'asep֜u 'et-kּal-sarene֣y pelishshetּi֗ym vayּoֽ'meru֙ shshalּech֞u 'et-'ar֨on 'elohe֤y yishsera'el֙ veyashsho֣b limeqom֔o veloֽ'-yami֥yt 'oti֖y ve'et-'amּi֑y kּiֽy-hayeta֤h mehֽumat-ma֨vet֙ bּekal-ha'i֔yr kּabeda֥h me'o֛d ya֥d ha'elohi֖ym shshaֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So they called together all the rulers of the Philistines and said, "Send the ark of the god of Israel away; let it go back to its own place, or it will kill us and our people." For death had filled the city with panic; God’s hand was very heavy on it.

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehaֽ'anashshiym֙ 'ashshe֣r lo'-me֔tu hukּ֖u b'plym bּatּechori֑ym vatּa֛'al shshaֽve'a֥t ha'i֖yr hashshּamaֽyim׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Those who did not die were afflicted with tumours, and the outcry of the city went up to heaven. The victory of God was evident.
