Chapter 7
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּabo֜'u 'aneshshe֣y ׀ qireya֣t ye'ari֗ym vֽayּa'alu֙ 'et-'ar֣on yehva֔h vayּabi֣'u 'ot֔o 'el-bּe֥yt 'abiynada֖b bּagּibe'a֑h ve'et-'ele'aza֤r bּeno֙ qidּeshsh֔u lishshemo֖r 'et-'ar֥on yehvaֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)So the men of Kiriath Jearim came and took up the ark of the LORD. They brought it to Abinadab’s house on the hill and consecrated Eleazar his son to guard the ark of the LORD.

וַיָּבֹ֜אוּ אַנְשֵׁ֣י ׀ קִרְיַ֣ת יְעָרִ֗ים וַֽיַּעֲלוּ֙ אֶת־אֲר֣וֹן יְהוָ֔ה וַיָּבִ֣אוּ אֹת֔וֹ אֶל־בֵּ֥ית אֲבִינָדָ֖ב בַּגִּבְעָ֑ה וְאֶת־אֶלְעָזָ֤ר בְּנוֹ֙ קִדְּשׁ֔וּ לִשְׁמֹ֖ר אֶת־אֲר֥וֹן יְהוָֽה׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֗y miyּ֞om shshe֤bet haֽ'aron֙ bּeqireya֣t ye'ari֔ym vayּirebּu֙ hayּami֔ym vayּiֽhey֖u 'eshseri֣ym shshana֑h vayּinּah֛u kּal-bּe֥yt yishsera'e֖l 'achare֥y yehvaֽh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)The ark remained at Kiriath Jearim a long time, twenty years in all. Then all the people of Israel turned back to the LORD.

וַיְהִ֗י מִיּ֞וֹם שֶׁ֤בֶת הָֽאָרוֹן֙ בְּקִרְיַ֣ת יְעָרִ֔ים וַיִּרְבּוּ֙ הַיָּמִ֔ים וַיִּֽהְי֖וּ עֶשְׂרִ֣ים שָׁנָ֑ה וַיִּנָּה֛וּ כָּל־בֵּ֥ית יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל אַחֲרֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer shshemu'e֗l 'el-kּal-bּe֣yt yishsera'el֮ le'mor֒ 'im-bּekal-lebabeke֗m 'atּe֤m shshabiym֙ 'el-yehva֔h hasi֜yru 'et-'elohe֧y hanּeka֛r mitּokeke֖m veha'ashshetּar֑ot vehaki֨ynu lebabeke֤m 'el-yehvah֙ ve'ibedu֣hu lebadּ֔o veyatzּe֥l 'eteke֖m miyּa֥d pּelishshetּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Samuel said to all the Israelites, "If you are returning to the LORD with all your hearts, then rid yourselves of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths and commit yourselves to the LORD and serve him only, and he will deliver you out of the hand of the Philistines."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵ֗ל אֶל־כָּל־בֵּ֣ית יִשְׂרָאֵל֮ לֵאמֹר֒ אִם־בְּכָל־לְבַבְכֶ֗ם אַתֶּ֤ם שָׁבִים֙ אֶל־יְהוָ֔ה הָסִ֜ירוּ אֶת־אֱלֹהֵ֧י הַנֵּכָ֛ר מִתּוֹכְכֶ֖ם וְהָעַשְׁתָּר֑וֹת וְהָכִ֨ינוּ לְבַבְכֶ֤ם אֶל־יְהוָה֙ וְעִבְדֻ֣הוּ לְבַדּ֔וֹ וְיַצֵּ֥ל אֶתְכֶ֖ם מִיַּ֥ד פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּasi֨yru֙ bּene֣y yishsera'e֔l 'et-habּe'ali֖ym ve'et-ha'ashshetּaro֑t vayּa'abed֥u 'et-yehva֖h lebadּֽo׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)So the Israelites put away their Baals and Ashtoreths, and served the LORD only.

וַיָּסִ֨ירוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֶת־הַבְּעָלִ֖ים וְאֶת־הָעַשְׁתָּרֹ֑ת וַיַּעַבְד֥וּ אֶת־יְהוָ֖ה לְבַדּֽוֹ׃פ

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer shshemu'e֔l qibetz֥u 'et-kּal-yishsera'e֖l hamּitzepּa֑tah ve'etepּalּe֥l bּa'adeke֖m 'el-yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Samuel said, "Assemble all Israel at Mizpah, and I will intercede with the LORD for you."

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל קִבְצ֥וּ אֶת־כָּל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל הַמִּצְפָּ֑תָה וְאֶתְפַּלֵּ֥ל בַּעַדְכֶ֖ם אֶל־יְהוָֽה׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּabetz֣u ha֠mּitzepּatah vayּiֽshshe'abu-ma֜yim vֽayּishshepּek֣u ׀ lipene֣y yehva֗h vayּatz֨umu֙ bּayּ֣om hah֔u vayּo֣'meru shsha֔m chata֖'nu layhva֑h vayּishshepּo֧t shshemu'e֛l 'et-bּene֥y yishsera'e֖l bּamּitzepּaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When they had assembled at Mizpah, they drew water and poured it out before the LORD. On that day they fasted and there they confessed, "We have sinned against the LORD." Now Samuel was serving as leader of Israel at Mizpah.

וַיִּקָּבְצ֣וּ הַ֠מִּצְפָּתָה וַיִּֽשְׁאֲבוּ־מַ֜יִם וַֽיִּשְׁפְּכ֣וּ ׀ לִפְנֵ֣י יְהוָ֗ה וַיָּצ֨וּמוּ֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא וַיֹּ֣אמְרוּ שָׁ֔ם חָטָ֖אנוּ לַיהוָ֑ה וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֧ט שְׁמוּאֵ֛ל אֶת־בְּנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל בַּמִּצְפָּֽה׃

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishsheme'֣u pelishshetּi֗ym kּiֽy-hiteqabּetz֤u beneֽy-yishsera'el֙ hamּitzepּa֔tah vayּa'al֥u sareneֽy-pelishshetּi֖ym 'el-yishsera'e֑l vaֽyּishsheme'u֙ bּene֣y yishsera'e֔l vayּiֽre'֖u mipּene֥y pelishshetּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When the Philistines heard that Israel had assembled at Mizpah, the rulers of the Philistines came up to attack them. When the Israelites heard of it, they were afraid because of the Philistines.

וַיִּשְׁמְע֣וּ פְלִשְׁתִּ֗ים כִּֽי־הִתְקַבְּצ֤וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ הַמִּצְפָּ֔תָה וַיַּעֲל֥וּ סַרְנֵֽי־פְלִשְׁתִּ֖ים אֶל־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַֽיִּשְׁמְעוּ֙ בְּנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַיִּֽרְא֖וּ מִפְּנֵ֥י פְלִשְׁתִּֽים׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֤u beneֽy-yishsera'el֙ 'el-shshemu'e֔l 'al-tּachare֣shsh mimּe֔nּu mizּe'o֖q 'el-yehva֣h 'elohe֑ynu veyoshshi'e֖nu miyּa֥d pּelishshetּiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They said to Samuel, "Do not stop crying out to the LORD our God for us, that he may rescue us from the hand of the Philistines."

וַיֹּאמְר֤וּ בְנֵֽי־יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ אֶל־שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל אַל־תַּחֲרֵ֣שׁ מִמֶּ֔נּוּ מִזְּעֹ֖ק אֶל־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֑ינוּ וְיֹשִׁעֵ֖נוּ מִיַּ֥ד פְּלִשְׁתִּֽים׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֣ch shshemu'e֗l tele֤h chalab֙ 'echa֔d vy'lh vayּa'ale֧hu 'ola֛h kּali֖yl laֽyhva֑h vayּize'a֨q shshemu'e֤l 'el-yehvah֙ bּe'a֣d yishsera'e֔l vaֽyּa'ane֖hu yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Samuel took a suckling lamb and sacrificed it as a whole burnt offering to the LORD. He cried out to the LORD on Israel’s behalf, and the LORD answered him.

וַיִּקַּ֣ח שְׁמוּאֵ֗ל טְלֵ֤ה חָלָב֙ אֶחָ֔ד ויעלה וַיַּעֲלֵ֧הוּ עוֹלָ֛ה כָּלִ֖יל לַֽיהוָ֑ה וַיִּזְעַ֨ק שְׁמוּאֵ֤ל אֶל־יְהוָה֙ בְּעַ֣ד יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל וַֽיַּעֲנֵ֖הוּ יְהוָֽה׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֤y shshemu'el֙ ma'ale֣h ha'ola֔h upelishshetּi֣ym nigּeshsh֔u lamּilechama֖h bּeyishsera'e֑l vayּare'e֣m yehva֣h ׀ bּeqol-gּa֠dol bּayּ֨om hah֤u 'al-pּelishshetּiym֙ vayehumּe֔m vayּinּagep֖u lipene֥y yishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)While Samuel was sacrificing the burnt offering, the Philistines drew near to engage Israel in battle. But that day the LORD thundered with loud thunder against the Philistines and threw them into such a panic that they were routed before the Israelites.

וַיְהִ֤י שְׁמוּאֵל֙ מַעֲלֶ֣ה הָעוֹלָ֔ה וּפְלִשְׁתִּ֣ים נִגְּשׁ֔וּ לַמִּלְחָמָ֖ה בְּיִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיַּרְעֵ֣ם יְהוָ֣ה ׀ בְּקוֹל־גָּ֠דוֹל בַּיּ֨וֹם הַה֤וּא עַל־פְּלִשְׁתִּים֙ וַיְהֻמֵּ֔ם וַיִּנָּגְפ֖וּ לִפְנֵ֥י יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֨tze'֜u 'aneshshe֤y yishsera'el֙ min-hamּitzepּa֔h vaֽyּiredּep֖u 'et-pּelishshetּi֑ym vayּakּ֕um 'ad-mitּa֖chat lebe֥yt kּaֽr׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The men of Israel rushed out of Mizpah and pursued the Philistines, slaughtering them along the way to a point below Beth Kar.

וַיֵּ֨צְא֜וּ אַנְשֵׁ֤י יִשְׂרָאֵל֙ מִן־הַמִּצְפָּ֔ה וַֽיִּרְדְּפ֖וּ אֶת־פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַיַּכּ֕וּם עַד־מִתַּ֖חַת לְבֵ֥ית כָּֽר׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqּa֨ch shshemu'e֜l 'e֣ben 'acha֗t vayּa֤shsem bּeֽyn-hamּitzepּah֙ ube֣yn hashshּe֔n vayּiqera֥ 'et-shshema֖hּ 'e֣ben ha'a֑zer vayּo'ma֕r 'ad-he֖nּah 'azara֥nu yehvaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Samuel took a stone and set it up between Mizpah and Shen. He named it Ebenezer [1], saying, "Thus far the LORD has helped us."

וַיִּקַּ֨ח שְׁמוּאֵ֜ל אֶ֣בֶן אַחַ֗ת וַיָּ֤שֶׂם בֵּֽין־הַמִּצְפָּה֙ וּבֵ֣ין הַשֵּׁ֔ן וַיִּקְרָ֥א אֶת־שְׁמָ֖הּ אֶ֣בֶן הָעָ֑זֶר וַיֹּאמַ֕ר עַד־הֵ֖נָּה עֲזָרָ֥נוּ יְהוָֽה׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּikּaֽne'u֙ hapּelishshetּi֔ym velo'-yasep֣u '֔od lab֖o bּigeb֣ul yishsera'e֑l vatּehi֤y yad-yehvah֙ bּapּelishshetּi֔ym kּo֖l yeme֥y shshemu'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So the Philistines were subdued and they did not invade Israelite territory again. Throughout Samuel’s lifetime, the hand of the LORD was against the Philistines.

וַיִּכָּֽנְעוּ֙ הַפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים וְלֹא־יָסְפ֣וּ ע֔וֹד לָב֖וֹא בִּגְב֣וּל יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַתְּהִ֤י יַד־יְהוָה֙ בַּפְּלִשְׁתִּ֔ים כֹּ֖ל יְמֵ֥י שְׁמוּאֵֽל׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vatּashsho֣benah he'ari֡ym 'ashshe֣r laֽqechu-pelishshetּiym֩ me'e֨t yishsera'e֤l ׀ leyishsera'el֙ me'eqer֣on ve'ad-gּa֔t ve'e֨t-gּebula֔n hitzּi֥yl yishsera'e֖l miyּa֣d pּelishshetּi֑ym vayehi֣y shshal֔om bּe֥yn yishsera'e֖l ube֥yn ha'emoriֽy׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The towns from Ekron to Gath that the Philistines had captured from Israel were restored to Israel, and Israel delivered the neighbouring territory from the hands of the Philistines. And there was peace between Israel and the Amorites.

וַתָּשֹׁ֣בְנָה הֶעָרִ֡ים אֲשֶׁ֣ר לָֽקְחוּ־פְלִשְׁתִּים֩ מֵאֵ֨ת יִשְׂרָאֵ֤ל ׀ לְיִשְׂרָאֵל֙ מֵעֶקְר֣וֹן וְעַד־גַּ֔ת וְאֶ֨ת־גְּבוּלָ֔ן הִצִּ֥יל יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל מִיַּ֣ד פְּלִשְׁתִּ֑ים וַיְהִ֣י שָׁל֔וֹם בֵּ֥ין יִשְׂרָאֵ֖ל וּבֵ֥ין הָאֱמֹרִֽי׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshepּo֤t shshemu'el֙ 'et-yishsera'e֔l kּo֖l yeme֥y chayּaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Samuel continued as Israel’s leader all the days of his life.

וַיִּשְׁפֹּ֤ט שְׁמוּאֵל֙ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל כֹּ֖ל יְמֵ֥י חַיָּֽיו׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehala֗ke midּe֤y shshanah֙ bּeshshana֔h vesabab֙ bּeֽyt-'e֔l vehagּilegּa֖l vehamּitzepּa֑h veshshapat֙ 'et-yishsera'e֔l 'e֥t kּal-hamּeqom֖ot ha'eֽlּeh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)From year to year he went on a circuit from Bethel to Gilgal to Mizpah, judging Israel in all those places.

וְהָלַ֗ךְ מִדֵּ֤י שָׁנָה֙ בְּשָׁנָ֔ה וְסָבַב֙ בֵּֽית־אֵ֔ל וְהַגִּלְגָּ֖ל וְהַמִּצְפָּ֑ה וְשָׁפַט֙ אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל אֵ֥ת כָּל־הַמְּקוֹמ֖וֹת הָאֵֽלֶּה׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): uteshshubat֤o harama֨tah֙ kּiֽy-shsha֣m bּeyt֔o veshsha֖m shshapa֣t 'et-yishsera'e֑l vayּiֽben-shsha֥m mizebּe֖cha laֽyhvaֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)But he always went back to Ramah, where his home was, and there he also held court for Israel. And he built an altar there to the LORD.

וּתְשֻׁבָת֤וֹ הָרָמָ֨תָה֙ כִּֽי־שָׁ֣ם בֵּית֔וֹ וְשָׁ֖ם שָׁפָ֣ט אֶת־יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיִּֽבֶן־שָׁ֥ם מִזְבֵּ֖חַ לַֽיהוָֽה׃פ
