Chapter 8
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֕y kּa'ashshe֥r zaqe֖n shshemu'e֑l vayּa֧shsem 'et-bּana֛yv shshopeti֖ym leyishsera'eֽl׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When Samuel grew old, he appointed his sons as Israel’s leaders.

וַיְהִ֕י כַּאֲשֶׁ֥ר זָקֵ֖ן שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל וַיָּ֧שֶׂם אֶת־בָּנָ֛יו שֹׁפְטִ֖ים לְיִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֞y shshem-bּen֤o habּekor֙ yo'e֔l veshshe֥m mishshene֖hu 'abiyּa֑h shshopeti֖ym bּibe'e֥r shshaֽba'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)The name of his firstborn was Joel and the name of his second was Abijah, and they served at Beersheba.

וַיְהִ֞י שֶׁם־בְּנ֤וֹ הַבְּכוֹר֙ יוֹאֵ֔ל וְשֵׁ֥ם מִשְׁנֵ֖הוּ אֲבִיָּ֑ה שֹׁפְטִ֖ים בִּבְאֵ֥ר שָֽׁבַע׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): veloֽ'-halek֤u banayv֙ bdrkv bּideraka֔yv vayּitּ֖u 'achare֣y habּa֑tza vayּi֨qechu-shsho֔chad vayּatּ֖u mishshepּaֽt׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)But his sons did not follow his ways. They turned aside after dishonest gain and accepted bribes and perverted justice.

וְלֹֽא־הָלְכ֤וּ בָנָיו֙ בדרכו בִּדְרָכָ֔יו וַיִּטּ֖וּ אַחֲרֵ֣י הַבָּ֑צַע וַיִּ֨קְחוּ־שֹׁ֔חַד וַיַּטּ֖וּ מִשְׁפָּֽט׃פ

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiֽteqabּetz֔u kּo֖l ziqene֣y yishsera'e֑l vayּabo֥'u 'el-shshemu'e֖l haramaֽtah׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So all the elders of Israel gathered together and came to Samuel at Ramah.

וַיִּֽתְקַבְּצ֔וּ כֹּ֖ל זִקְנֵ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֑ל וַיָּבֹ֥אוּ אֶל־שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל הָרָמָֽתָה׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo'mer֣u 'ela֗yv hinּeh֙ 'atּa֣h zaqa֔netּa ubane֕yka lo֥ halek֖u bּiderake֑yka 'atּa֗h shsiֽymah-lּa֥nu me֛leke leshshapete֖nu kּekal-hagּoyiֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)They said to him, "You are old, and your sons do not follow your ways; now appoint a king to lead us, such as all the other nations have."

וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ אֵלָ֗יו הִנֵּה֙ אַתָּ֣ה זָקַ֔נְתָּ וּבָנֶ֕יךָ לֹ֥א הָלְכ֖וּ בִּדְרָכֶ֑יךָ עַתָּ֗ה שִֽׂימָה־לָּ֥נוּ מֶ֛לֶךְ לְשָׁפְטֵ֖נוּ כְּכָל־הַגּוֹיִֽם׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּe֤ra hadּabar֙ bּe'eyne֣y shshemu'e֔l kּa'ashshe֣r 'amer֔u tּenah-lּa֥nu me֖leke leshshapete֑nu vayּitepּalּe֥l shshemu'e֖l 'el-yehvaֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)But when they said, "Give us a king to lead us," this displeased Samuel; so he prayed to the LORD.

וַיֵּ֤רַע הַדָּבָר֙ בְּעֵינֵ֣י שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל כַּאֲשֶׁ֣ר אָמְר֔וּ תְּנָה־לָּ֥נוּ מֶ֖לֶךְ לְשָׁפְטֵ֑נוּ וַיִּתְפַּלֵּ֥ל שְׁמוּאֵ֖ל אֶל־יְהוָֽה׃פ

7
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֤'mer yehvah֙ 'el-shshemu'e֔l shshema'֙ bּeq֣ol ha'a֔m leko֥l 'ashsher-yo'mer֖u 'ele֑yka kּi֣y lo֤ 'oֽteka֙ ma'a֔su kּiֽy-'oti֥y ma'as֖u mimּelo֥ke 'aleyheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And the LORD told him: "Listen to all that the people are saying to you; it is not you they have rejected, but they have rejected me as their king.

וַיֹּ֤אמֶר יְהוָה֙ אֶל־שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל שְׁמַע֙ בְּק֣וֹל הָעָ֔ם לְכֹ֥ל אֲשֶׁר־יֹאמְר֖וּ אֵלֶ֑יךָ כִּ֣י לֹ֤א אֹֽתְךָ֙ מָאָ֔סוּ כִּֽי־אֹתִ֥י מָאֲס֖וּ מִמְּלֹ֥ךְ עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): kּekaֽl-hamּa'ashsi֣ym 'ashsher-'ashs֗u miyּom֩ ha'aloti֨y 'ota֤m mimּitzera֨yim֙ ve'ad-hayּ֣om hazּe֔h vayּa֣'azebu֔niy vayּa'abed֖u 'elohi֣ym 'acheri֑ym kּe֛n he֥mּah 'oshsi֖ym gּam-laֽke׃
Edified Edition (EDE)As they have done from the day I brought them up out of Egypt until this day, forsaking me and serving other gods, so they are doing to you.

כְּכָֽל־הַמַּעֲשִׂ֣ים אֲשֶׁר־עָשׂ֗וּ מִיּוֹם֩ הַעֲלֹתִ֨י אֹתָ֤ם מִמִּצְרַ֨יִם֙ וְעַד־הַיּ֣וֹם הַזֶּ֔ה וַיַּ֣עַזְבֻ֔נִי וַיַּעַבְד֖וּ אֱלֹהִ֣ים אֲחֵרִ֑ים כֵּ֛ן הֵ֥מָּה עֹשִׂ֖ים גַּם־לָֽךְ׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'atּa֖h shshema֣ bּeqola֑m 'a֗ke kּiֽy-ha'e֤d tּa'iyd֙ bּahe֔m vehigּadetּa֣ lahe֔m mishshepּa֣t hamּe֔leke 'ashshe֥r yimelo֖ke 'aleyheֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Now listen to them; but warn them solemnly and let them know what the king who will reign over them will claim as his rights."

וְעַתָּ֖ה שְׁמַ֣ע בְּקוֹלָ֑ם אַ֗ךְ כִּֽי־הָעֵ֤ד תָּעִיד֙ בָּהֶ֔ם וְהִגַּדְתָּ֣ לָהֶ֔ם מִשְׁפַּ֣ט הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִמְלֹ֖ךְ עֲלֵיהֶֽם׃ס

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֣'mer shshemu'e֔l 'e֖t kּal-dּibere֣y yehva֑h 'el-ha'a֕m hashshּo'ali֥ym me'itּ֖o meֽleke׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Samuel told all the words of the LORD to the people who were asking him for a king.

וַיֹּ֣אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל אֵ֖ת כָּל־דִּבְרֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה אֶל־הָעָ֕ם הַשֹּׁאֲלִ֥ים מֵאִתּ֖וֹ מֶֽלֶךְ׃ס

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֕'mer ze֗h yiֽheyeh֙ mishshepּa֣t hamּe֔leke 'ashshe֥r yimelo֖ke 'aleyke֑m 'et-bּeneyke֣m yiqּa֗ch veshsa֥m lo֙ bּemerekּabetּ֣o ubeparashsha֔yv veratz֖u lipene֥y merekּabetּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He said, "This is what the king who will reign over us will claim as his rights: He will take your sons and make them serve with his chariots and horses, and they will run in front of his chariots.

וַיֹּ֕אמֶר זֶ֗ה יִֽהְיֶה֙ מִשְׁפַּ֣ט הַמֶּ֔לֶךְ אֲשֶׁ֥ר יִמְלֹ֖ךְ עֲלֵיכֶ֑ם אֶת־בְּנֵיכֶ֣ם יִקָּ֗ח וְשָׂ֥ם לוֹ֙ בְּמֶרְכַּבְתּ֣וֹ וּבְפָרָשָׁ֔יו וְרָצ֖וּ לִפְנֵ֥י מֶרְכַּבְתּֽוֹ׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): velashs֣um l֔o shsare֥y 'alapi֖ym veshsare֣y chamishshּi֑ym velacharo֤shsh chariyshsho֙ veliqetzo֣r qetziyr֔o vela'ashs֥ot kּeleֽy-milechametּ֖o ukele֥y rikebּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Some he will assign to be commanders of thousands and commanders of fifties, and others to plough his ground and reap his harvest, and still others to make weapons of war and equipment for his chariots.

וְלָשׂ֣וּם ל֔וֹ שָׂרֵ֥י אֲלָפִ֖ים וְשָׂרֵ֣י חֲמִשִּׁ֑ים וְלַחֲרֹ֤שׁ חֲרִישׁוֹ֙ וְלִקְצֹ֣ר קְצִיר֔וֹ וְלַעֲשׂ֥וֹת כְּלֵֽי־מִלְחַמְתּ֖וֹ וּכְלֵ֥י רִכְבּֽוֹ׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-bּenoteyke֖m yiqּa֑ch leraqּach֥ot uletabּach֖ot ule'opֽot׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He will take your daughters to be perfumers and cooks and bakers.

וְאֶת־בְּנוֹתֵיכֶ֖ם יִקָּ֑ח לְרַקָּח֥וֹת וּלְטַבָּח֖וֹת וּלְאֹפֽוֹת׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-shse֠dֽoteykem ve'et-kּaremeyke֧m vezeyteyke֛m hatּobi֖ym yiqּa֑ch venata֖n la'abadaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He will take the best of your fields and vineyards and olive groves and give them to his attendants.

וְאֶת־שְׂ֠דֽוֹתֵיכֶם וְאֶת־כַּרְמֵיכֶ֧ם וְזֵיתֵיכֶ֛ם הַטּוֹבִ֖ים יִקָּ֑ח וְנָתַ֖ן לַעֲבָדָֽיו׃

15
Phonetic (Hebrew): vezare'eyke֥m vekaremeyke֖m ya'eshso֑r venata֥n lesariysa֖yv vela'abadaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He will take a tenth of your grain and of your vintage and give it to his officials and attendants.

וְזַרְעֵיכֶ֥ם וְכַרְמֵיכֶ֖ם יַעְשֹׂ֑ר וְנָתַ֥ן לְסָרִיסָ֖יו וְלַעֲבָדָֽיו׃

16
Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'et-'abedeykem֩ veֽ'et-shshipech֨oteyke֜m ve'et-bּachureyke֧m hatּobi֛ym ve'et-chamoreyke֖m yiqּa֑ch ve'ashsa֖h limela'ketּֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Your male and female servants and the best of your cattle and donkeys he will take for his own use.

וְאֶת־עַבְדֵיכֶם֩ וְֽאֶת־שִׁפְח֨וֹתֵיכֶ֜ם וְאֶת־בַּחוּרֵיכֶ֧ם הַטּוֹבִ֛ים וְאֶת־חֲמוֹרֵיכֶ֖ם יִקָּ֑ח וְעָשָׂ֖ה לִמְלַאכְתּֽוֹ׃

17
Phonetic (Hebrew): tzo'neke֖m ya'eshso֑r ve'atּe֖m tּiֽheyu-l֥o la'abadiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He will take a tenth of your flocks, and you yourselves will become his slaves.

צֹאנְכֶ֖ם יַעְשֹׂ֑ר וְאַתֶּ֖ם תִּֽהְיוּ־ל֥וֹ לַעֲבָדִֽים׃

18
Phonetic (Hebrew): uze'aqetּem֙ bּayּ֣om hah֔u milּipene֣y malekּeke֔m 'ashshe֥r bּecharetּe֖m lake֑m veloֽ'-ya'ane֧h yehva֛h 'eteke֖m bּayּ֥om hahֽu'׃
Edified Edition (EDE)When that day comes, you will cry out for relief from the king you have chosen, but the LORD will not answer you in that day."

וּזְעַקְתֶּם֙ בַּיּ֣וֹם הַה֔וּא מִלִּפְנֵ֣י מַלְכְּכֶ֔ם אֲשֶׁ֥ר בְּחַרְתֶּ֖ם לָכֶ֑ם וְלֹֽא־יַעֲנֶ֧ה יְהוָ֛ה אֶתְכֶ֖ם בַּיּ֥וֹם הַהֽוּא׃

19
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayema'an֣u ha'a֔m lishshemo֖'a bּeq֣ol shshemu'e֑l vayּo'mer֣u lּo֔ kּi֥y 'im-me֖leke yiֽheye֥h 'aleֽynu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)But the people refused to listen to Samuel. "No!" they said. "We want a king over us.

וַיְמָאֲנ֣וּ הָעָ֔ם לִשְׁמֹ֖עַ בְּק֣וֹל שְׁמוּאֵ֑ל וַיֹּאמְר֣וּ לֹּ֔א כִּ֥י אִם־מֶ֖לֶךְ יִֽהְיֶ֥ה עָלֵֽינוּ׃

20
Phonetic (Hebrew): vehayi֥ynu gam-'ana֖chenu kּekal-hagּoyi֑m ushshepata֤nu malekּe֨nu֙ veyatza֣ lepane֔ynu venilecha֖m 'et-milechamoteֽnu׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then we shall be like all the other nations, with a king to lead us and to go out before us and fight our battles."

וְהָיִ֥ינוּ גַם־אֲנַ֖חְנוּ כְּכָל־הַגּוֹיִ֑ם וּשְׁפָטָ֤נוּ מַלְכֵּ֨נוּ֙ וְיָצָ֣א לְפָנֵ֔ינוּ וְנִלְחַ֖ם אֶת־מִלְחֲמֹתֵֽנוּ׃

21
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּishshema֣ shshemu'e֔l 'e֖t kּal-dּibere֣y ha'a֑m vaֽyedabּere֖m bּe'azene֥y yehvaֽh׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)When Samuel heard all that the people said, he repeated it before the LORD.

וַיִּשְׁמַ֣ע שְׁמוּאֵ֔ל אֵ֖ת כָּל־דִּבְרֵ֣י הָעָ֑ם וַֽיְדַבְּרֵ֖ם בְּאָזְנֵ֥י יְהוָֽה׃פ

22
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer yehva֤h 'el-shshemu'el֙ shshema֣ bּeqola֔m vehimelaketּa֥ lahe֖m me֑leke vayּo֤'mer shshemu'el֙ 'el-'aneshshe֣y yishsera'e֔l lek֖u 'i֥yshsh le'iyrֽo׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)The LORD answered, "Listen to them and give them a king." Then Samuel said to the Israelites, "Everyone go back to your own town."

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר יְהוָ֤ה אֶל־שְׁמוּאֵל֙ שְׁמַ֣ע בְּקוֹלָ֔ם וְהִמְלַכְתָּ֥ לָהֶ֖ם מֶ֑לֶךְ וַיֹּ֤אמֶר שְׁמוּאֵל֙ אֶל־אַנְשֵׁ֣י יִשְׂרָאֵ֔ל לְכ֖וּ אִ֥ישׁ לְעִירֽוֹ׃פ
