Chapter 14
1
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֤'ashs 'asa'֙ hatּ֣ob vehayּashsha֔r bּe'eyne֖y yehva֥h 'elohaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So Abijah rested with his fathers, and they buried him in the City of David. Then Asa his son reigned in his place. In his days the land was quiet for ten years.

וַיַּ֤עַשׂ אָסָא֙ הַטּ֣וֹב וְהַיָּשָׁ֔ר בְּעֵינֵ֖י יְהוָ֥ה אֱלֹהָֽיו׃

2
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֛sar 'et-mizebּech֥ot hanּeka֖r vehabּam֑ot vayeshshabּer֙ 'et-hamּatzּeb֔ot vayegadּa֖ 'et-ha'ashsheriֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Asa did what was good and right in the eyes of the LORD his God,

וַיָּ֛סַר אֶת־מִזְבְּח֥וֹת הַנֵּכָ֖ר וְהַבָּמ֑וֹת וַיְשַׁבֵּר֙ אֶת־הַמַּצֵּב֔וֹת וַיְגַדַּ֖ע אֶת־הָאֲשֵׁרִֽים׃

3
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer֙ liֽyhuda֔h lider֕oshsh 'et-yehva֖h 'elohe֣y 'aboteyhe֑m vela'ashs֖ot hatּora֥h vehamּitzevaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)for he removed the altars of the foreign gods and the high places, and broke down the sacred pillars and cut down the wooden images.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר֙ לִֽיהוּדָ֔ה לִדְר֕וֹשׁ אֶת־יְהוָ֖ה אֱלֹהֵ֣י אֲבוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם וְלַעֲשׂ֖וֹת הַתּוֹרָ֥ה וְהַמִּצְוָֽה׃

4
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨sar֙ mikּal-'are֣y yehuda֔h 'et-habּam֖ot ve'et-haֽchamּani֑ym vatּishsheqo֥t hamּamelaka֖h lepanaֽyv׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He commanded Judah to seek the LORD God of their fathers, and to observe the law and the commandment.

וַיָּ֨סַר֙ מִכָּל־עָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה אֶת־הַבָּמ֖וֹת וְאֶת־הַֽחַמָּנִ֑ים וַתִּשְׁקֹ֥ט הַמַּמְלָכָ֖ה לְפָנָֽיו׃

5
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּi֛ben 'are֥y metzura֖h bּiyhuda֑h kּiֽy-shshaqeta֣h ha'a֗retz ve'eyn-'imּ֤o milechamah֙ bּashshּani֣ym ha'e֔lּeh kּiֽy-heni֥ycha yehva֖h lֽo׃
Edified Edition (EDE)He also removed the high places and the incense altars from all the cities of Judah, and the kingdom was quiet under him.

וַיִּ֛בֶן עָרֵ֥י מְצוּרָ֖ה בִּיהוּדָ֑ה כִּֽי־שָׁקְטָ֣ה הָאָ֗רֶץ וְאֵין־עִמּ֤וֹ מִלְחָמָה֙ בַּשָּׁנִ֣ים הָאֵ֔לֶּה כִּֽי־הֵנִ֥יחַ יְהוָ֖ה לֽוֹ׃

6
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּo֨'mer liֽyhuda֜h nibene֣h ׀ 'et-he'ari֣ym ha'e֗lּeh venase֨b choma֣h umigedּaliym֮ dּelata֣yim uberiychiym֒ 'ode֨nּu ha'a֜retz lepane֗ynu kּi֤y dara֨shshenu֙ 'et-yehva֣h 'elohe֔ynu dּara֕shshenu vayּa֥naֽch la֖nu misּabi֑yb vayּiben֖u vayּatzeliֽychu׃p
Edified Edition (EDE)And he built fortified cities in Judah, for the land had rest; he had no war in those years, because the LORD had given him rest.

וַיֹּ֨אמֶר לִֽיהוּדָ֜ה נִבְנֶ֣ה ׀ אֶת־הֶעָרִ֣ים הָאֵ֗לֶּה וְנָסֵ֨ב חוֹמָ֣ה וּמִגְדָּלִים֮ דְּלָתַ֣יִם וּבְרִיחִים֒ עוֹדֶ֨נּוּ הָאָ֜רֶץ לְפָנֵ֗ינוּ כִּ֤י דָרַ֨שְׁנוּ֙ אֶת־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהֵ֔ינוּ דָּרַ֕שְׁנוּ וַיָּ֥נַֽח לָ֖נוּ מִסָּבִ֑יב וַיִּבְנ֖וּ וַיַּצְלִֽיחוּ׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y le'asa֗ chayil֮ noshse֣ tzinּa֣h varomach֒ miֽyhudah֙ shshelo֣shsh me'֣ot 'e֔lep s umibּineyami֗n noshse'e֤y magen֙ vedo֣rekey qe֔shshet ma'ta֥yim ushshemoni֖ym 'a֑lep kּal-'e֖lּeh gּibּ֥orey chaֽyil׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore he said to Judah, "Let us build these cities and make walls around them, and towers, gates, and bars, while the land is yet before us, because we have sought the LORD our God; we have sought Him, and He has given us rest on every side." So they built and prospered.

וַיְהִ֣י לְאָסָ֗א חַיִל֮ נֹשֵׂ֣א צִנָּ֣ה וָרֹמַח֒ מִֽיהוּדָה֙ שְׁלֹ֣שׁ מֵא֣וֹת אֶ֔לֶף ס וּמִבִּנְיָמִ֗ן נֹשְׂאֵ֤י מָגֵן֙ וְדֹ֣רְכֵי קֶ֔שֶׁת מָאתַ֥יִם וּשְׁמוֹנִ֖ים אָ֑לֶף כָּל־אֵ֖לֶּה גִּבּ֥וֹרֵי חָֽיִל׃

8
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze֨ 'aleyhe֜m ze֣rach hakּushshi֗y bּecha֨yil֙ 'e֣lep 'alapi֔ym umarekּab֖ot shshelo֣shsh me'֑ot vayּabo֖ 'ad-mareshshaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And Asa had an army of three hundred thousand from Judah who bore shields and spears, and from Benjamin two hundred and eighty thousand who bore shields and drew bows; all these were mighty men of valour.

וַיֵּצֵ֨א אֲלֵיהֶ֜ם זֶ֣רַח הַכּוּשִׁ֗י בְּחַ֨יִל֙ אֶ֣לֶף אֲלָפִ֔ים וּמַרְכָּב֖וֹת שְׁלֹ֣שׁ מֵא֑וֹת וַיָּבֹ֖א עַד־מָרֵשָֽׁה׃

9
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּetze֥ 'asa֖ lepana֑yv vayּaֽ'areku֙ milechama֔h bּege֥y tzepa֖tah lemareshshaֽh׃
Edified Edition (EDE)Then Zerah the Ethiopian came out against them with an army of a million men and three hundred chariots, and he came to Mareshah.

וַיֵּצֵ֥א אָסָ֖א לְפָנָ֑יו וַיַּֽעַרְכוּ֙ מִלְחָמָ֔ה בְּגֵ֥יא צְפַ֖תָה לְמָרֵשָֽׁה׃

10
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiqera֨ 'asa֜ 'el-yehva֣h 'elohayv֮ vayּo'mar֒ yehva֗h 'eֽyn-'imּeka֤ la'ezor֙ bּe֥yn rab֙ le'e֣yn kּo֔cha 'azere֜nu yehva֤h 'elohe֨ynu֙ kּiֽy-'ale֣yka nishshe'a֔nּu ubeshshimeka֣ ba֔'nu 'al-heham֖on hazּe֑h yehva֤h 'elohe֨ynu֙ 'a֔tּah 'al-ya'etzo֥r 'imּeka֖ 'enֽoshsh׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)So Asa went out against him, and they set the battle in array in the Valley of Zephathah at Mareshah.

וַיִּקְרָ֨א אָסָ֜א אֶל־יְהוָ֣ה אֱלֹהָיו֮ וַיֹּאמַר֒ יְהוָ֗ה אֵֽין־עִמְּךָ֤ לַעְזוֹר֙ בֵּ֥ין רַב֙ לְאֵ֣ין כֹּ֔חַ עָזְרֵ֜נוּ יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֵ֨ינוּ֙ כִּֽי־עָלֶ֣יךָ נִשְׁעַ֔נּוּ וּבְשִׁמְךָ֣ בָ֔אנוּ עַל־הֶהָמ֖וֹן הַזֶּ֑ה יְהוָ֤ה אֱלֹהֵ֨ינוּ֙ אַ֔תָּה אַל־יַעְצֹ֥ר עִמְּךָ֖ אֱנֽוֹשׁ׃ס

11
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּigּo֤p yehvah֙ 'et-hakּushshi֔ym lipene֥y 'asa֖ velipene֣y yehuda֑h vayּanu֖su hakּushshiֽym׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And Asa cried out to the LORD his God, and said, "LORD, it is nothing for You to help, whether with many or with those who have no power; help us, O LORD our God, for we rest on You, and in Your name we go against this multitude. O LORD, You are our God; do not let man prevail against You!"

וַיִּגֹּ֤ף יְהוָה֙ אֶת־הַכּוּשִׁ֔ים לִפְנֵ֥י אָסָ֖א וְלִפְנֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה וַיָּנֻ֖סוּ הַכּוּשִֽׁים׃

12
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּiredּepe֨m 'asa֜ veha'a֣m 'ashsher-'imּo֮ 'ad-ligerar֒ vayּipּo֤l mikּushshiym֙ le'e֣yn lahe֣m miֽcheya֔h kּiֽy-nishshebּer֥u lipeneֽy-yehva֖h velipene֣y machane֑hu vayּishse'֥u shshala֖l harebּe֥h me'oֽd׃
Edified Edition (EDE)So the LORD struck the Ethiopians before Asa and Judah, and the Ethiopians fled.

וַיִּרְדְּפֵ֨ם אָסָ֜א וְהָעָ֣ם אֲשֶׁר־עִמּוֹ֮ עַד־לִגְרָר֒ וַיִּפֹּ֤ל מִכּוּשִׁים֙ לְאֵ֣ין לָהֶ֣ם מִֽחְיָ֔ה כִּֽי־נִשְׁבְּר֥וּ לִפְנֵֽי־יְהוָ֖ה וְלִפְנֵ֣י מַחֲנֵ֑הוּ וַיִּשְׂא֥וּ שָׁלָ֖ל הַרְבֵּ֥ה מְאֹֽד׃

13
Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּakּ֗u 'e֤t kּal-heֽ'ariym֙ sebiyb֣ot gּera֔r kּiy-haya֥h paֽchad-yehva֖h 'aleyhe֑m vayּabo֨zּu֙ 'et-kּal-he֣'ari֔ym kּiֽy-bizּa֥h rabּa֖h hayeta֥h baheֽm׃
Edified Edition (EDE)And Asa and the people who were with him pursued them as far as Gerar. So the Ethiopians were overthrown, and they could not recover, for they were destroyed before the LORD and His army. And they carried away very much spoil.

וַיַּכּ֗וּ אֵ֤ת כָּל־הֶֽעָרִים֙ סְבִיב֣וֹת גְּרָ֔ר כִּי־הָיָ֥ה פַֽחַד־יְהוָ֖ה עֲלֵיהֶ֑ם וַיָּבֹ֨זּוּ֙ אֶת־כָּל־הֶ֣עָרִ֔ים כִּֽי־בִזָּ֥ה רַבָּ֖ה הָיְתָ֥ה בָהֶֽם׃

14
Phonetic (Hebrew): vegam-'ahole֥y miqene֖h hikּ֑u vayּishshebּ֨u tzo֤'n larob֙ ugemalּi֔ym vayּashshu֖bu yerushshalaiֽm׃s
Edified Edition (EDE)Then they struck all the cities around Gerar, for the fear of the LORD came upon them; and they plundered all the cities, for there was exceedingly much spoil in them.

וְגַם־אָהֳלֵ֥י מִקְנֶ֖ה הִכּ֑וּ וַיִּשְׁבּ֨וּ צֹ֤אן לָרֹב֙ וּגְמַלִּ֔ים וַיָּשֻׁ֖בוּ יְרוּשָׁלִָֽם׃ס
