Chapter 17

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּimelo֛ke yehoshshapa֥t bּen֖o tּachetּa֑yv vayּitechazּe֖q 'al-yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Then Jehoshaphat his son reigned in his place, and strengthened himself against Israel.

וַיִּמְלֹ֛ךְ יְהוֹשָׁפָ֥ט בְּנ֖וֹ תַּחְתָּ֑יו וַיִּתְחַזֵּ֖ק עַל־יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּi֨tּen-cha֔yil bּekal-'are֥y yehuda֖h habּetzur֑ot vayּitּe֤n netziybiym֙ bּe'e֣retz yehuda֔h ube'are֣y 'epera֔yim 'ashshe֥r laka֖d 'asa֥ 'abiֽyv׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And he placed troops in all the fortified cities of Judah, and set garrisons in the land of Judah and in the cities of Ephraim which Asa his father had taken.

וַיִּ֨תֶּן־חַ֔יִל בְּכָל־עָרֵ֥י יְהוּדָ֖ה הַבְּצֻר֑וֹת וַיִּתֵּ֤ן נְצִיבִים֙ בְּאֶ֣רֶץ יְהוּדָ֔ה וּבְעָרֵ֣י אֶפְרַ֔יִם אֲשֶׁ֥ר לָכַ֖ד אָסָ֥א אָבִֽיו׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֥y yehva֖h 'im-yehoshshapa֑t kּi֣y hala֗ke bּedareke֞y dּavi֤yd 'abiyv֙ hari֣'shshoni֔ym velo֥ dara֖shsh labּe'aliֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Now the LORD was with Jehoshaphat, because he walked in the former ways of his father David; he did not seek the Baals,

וַיְהִ֥י יְהוָ֖ה עִם־יְהוֹשָׁפָ֑ט כִּ֣י הָלַ֗ךְ בְּדַרְכֵ֞י דָּוִ֤יד אָבִיו֙ הָרִ֣אשֹׁנִ֔ים וְלֹ֥א דָרַ֖שׁ לַבְּעָלִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): kּi֠y lֽe'lohe֤y 'abiyv֙ dּara֔shsh ubemitzevota֖yv hala֑ke velo֖ kּema'ashse֥h yishsera'eֽl׃

Edified Edition (EDE)but sought the God of his father, and walked in His commandments and not according to the acts of Israel.

כִּ֠י לֵֽאלֹהֵ֤י אָבִיו֙ דָּרָ֔שׁ וּבְמִצְוֺתָ֖יו הָלָ֑ךְ וְלֹ֖א כְּמַעֲשֵׂ֥ה יִשְׂרָאֵֽל׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּa֨ken yehva֤h 'et-hamּamelakah֙ bּeyad֔o vayּitּen֧u kal-yehuda֛h minecha֖h liyhoshshapa֑t vaֽyehiy-l֥o 'oֽshsher-vekab֖od laroֽb׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Therefore the LORD established the kingdom in his hand; and all Judah brought presents to Jehoshaphat, and he had riches and honour in abundance.

וַיָּ֨כֶן יְהוָ֤ה אֶת־הַמַּמְלָכָה֙ בְּיָד֔וֹ וַיִּתְּנ֧וּ כָל־יְהוּדָ֛ה מִנְחָ֖ה לִיהוֹשָׁפָ֑ט וַֽיְהִי־ל֥וֹ עֹֽשֶׁר־וְכָב֖וֹד לָרֹֽב׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayּigebּa֥hּ libּ֖o bּedareke֣y yehva֑h ve'֗od hesi֛yr 'et-habּam֥ot ve'et-ha'ashsheri֖ym miyhudaֽh׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)And his heart took delight in the ways of the LORD; moreover he removed the high places and wooden images from Judah.

וַיִּגְבַּ֥הּ לִבּ֖וֹ בְּדַרְכֵ֣י יְהוָ֑ה וְע֗וֹד הֵסִ֛יר אֶת־הַבָּמ֥וֹת וְאֶת־הָאֲשֵׁרִ֖ים מִיהוּדָֽה׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): ubishshena֨t shshal֜oshsh lemalek֗o shshala֤ch leshsarayv֙ leben-cha֨yil֙ ule'obadeya֣h velizekareya֔h velinetane'e֖l ulemiykaya֑hu lelamּe֖d bּe'are֥y yehudaֽh׃

Edified Edition (EDE)Also in the third year of his reign he sent his leaders, Ben-Hail, Obadiah, Zechariah, Nethanel, and Michaiah, to teach in the cities of Judah.

וּבִשְׁנַ֨ת שָׁל֜וֹשׁ לְמָלְכ֗וֹ שָׁלַ֤ח לְשָׂרָיו֙ לְבֶן־חַ֨יִל֙ וּלְעֹבַדְיָ֣ה וְלִזְכַרְיָ֔ה וְלִנְתַנְאֵ֖ל וּלְמִיכָיָ֑הוּ לְלַמֵּ֖ד בְּעָרֵ֥י יְהוּדָֽה׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'imּahe֣m haleviyּi֗m shsheֽmaֽ'eya֡hu unetaneya֡hu uzebadeya֡hu va'ashsah'e֡l vshmrymvt ushshemiֽyram֡ot viֽyhonatan֩ va'ado֨niyּa֧hu vetֽobiyּa֛hu vet֥ob 'adoniyּa֖h haleviyּi֑m ve'imּahe֛m 'eliyshshama֥ viֽyhora֖m hakּohaniֽym׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And with them he sent Levites: Shemaiah, Nethaniah, Zebadiah, Asahel, Shemiramoth, Jehonathan, Adonijah, Tobijah, and Tob-Adonijah, the Levites; and with them Elishama and Jehoram, the priests.

וְעִמָּהֶ֣ם הַלְוִיִּ֗ם שְֽׁמַֽעְיָ֡הוּ וּנְתַנְיָ֡הוּ וּזְבַדְיָ֡הוּ וַעֲשָׂהאֵ֡ל ושמרימות וּשְׁמִֽירָמ֡וֹת וִֽיהוֹנָתָן֩ וַאֲדֹ֨נִיָּ֧הוּ וְטֽוֹבִיָּ֛הוּ וְט֥וֹב אֲדוֹנִיָּ֖ה הַלְוִיִּ֑ם וְעִמָּהֶ֛ם אֱלִישָׁמָ֥ע וִֽיהוֹרָ֖ם הַכֹּהֲנִֽים׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vaֽyelamּedu֙ bּiֽyhuda֔h ve'i֨mּahe֔m se֖per tּora֣t yehva֑h vayּaso֨bּu֙ bּekal-'are֣y yehuda֔h vaֽyelamּed֖u bּa'aֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So they taught in Judah, and had the Book of the Law of the LORD with them; they went throughout all the cities of Judah and taught the people.

וַֽיְלַמְּדוּ֙ בִּֽיהוּדָ֔ה וְעִ֨מָּהֶ֔ם סֵ֖פֶר תּוֹרַ֣ת יְהוָ֑ה וַיָּסֹ֨בּוּ֙ בְּכָל־עָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֔ה וַֽיְלַמְּד֖וּ בָּעָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֣y ׀ pּa֣chad yehva֗h 'a֚l kּal-mamelek֣ot hֽa'aratz֔ot 'ashshe֖r sebiyb֣ot yehuda֑h velo֥ nilecham֖u 'im-yehoshshapaֽt׃

Edified Edition (EDE)And the fear of the LORD fell on all the kingdoms of the lands that were around Judah, so that they did not make war against Jehoshaphat.

וַיְהִ֣י ׀ פַּ֣חַד יְהוָ֗ה עַ֚ל כָּל־מַמְלְכ֣וֹת הָֽאֲרָצ֔וֹת אֲשֶׁ֖ר סְבִיב֣וֹת יְהוּדָ֑ה וְלֹ֥א נִלְחֲמ֖וּ עִם־יְהוֹשָׁפָֽט׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): umin-pּelishshetּi֗ym mebiy'i֧ym liֽyhoshshapa֛t minecha֖h veke֣sep mashsּa֑ gּa֣m haֽ'arebiy'i֗ym mebiy'i֥ym lo֙ tzo֕'n 'eyli֔ym shshibe'a֤t 'alapiym֙ ushsheba֣ me'֔ot uteyashshi֕ym shshibe'a֥t 'alapi֖ym ushsheba֥ me'ֽot׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)Also some of the Philistines brought Jehoshaphat presents and silver as tribute; and the Arabians brought him flocks, seven thousand seven hundred rams and seven thousand seven hundred male goats.

וּמִן־פְּלִשְׁתִּ֗ים מְבִיאִ֧ים לִֽיהוֹשָׁפָ֛ט מִנְחָ֖ה וְכֶ֣סֶף מַשָּׂ֑א גַּ֣ם הָֽעַרְבִיאִ֗ים מְבִיאִ֥ים לוֹ֙ צֹ֕אן אֵילִ֔ים שִׁבְעַ֤ת אֲלָפִים֙ וּשְׁבַ֣ע מֵא֔וֹת וּתְיָשִׁ֕ים שִׁבְעַ֥ת אֲלָפִ֖ים וּשְׁבַ֥ע מֵאֽוֹת׃פ

Phonetic (Hebrew): vayehi֧y yehoshshapa֛t hole֥ke vegade֖l 'ad-lema֑'elah vayּi֧ben bּiֽyhuda֛h bּiyraniyּ֖ot ve'are֥y misekּenֽot׃

Edified Edition (EDE)So Jehoshaphat became increasingly powerful, and he built fortresses and storage cities in Judah.

וַיְהִ֧י יְהוֹשָׁפָ֛ט הֹלֵ֥ךְ וְגָדֵ֖ל עַד־לְמָ֑עְלָה וַיִּ֧בֶן בִּֽיהוּדָ֛ה בִּירָנִיּ֖וֹת וְעָרֵ֥י מִסְכְּנֽוֹת׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): umela'ka֥h rabּa֛h ha֥yah l֖o bּe'are֣y yehuda֑h ve'aneshshe֧y milechama֛h gּibּ֥orey cha֖yil bּiyrushshalaiֽm׃

Edified Edition (EDE)He had much property in the cities of Judah; and the men of war, mighty men of valour, were in Jerusalem.

וּמְלָאכָ֥ה רַבָּ֛ה הָ֥יָה ל֖וֹ בְּעָרֵ֣י יְהוּדָ֑ה וְאַנְשֵׁ֧י מִלְחָמָ֛ה גִּבּ֥וֹרֵי חַ֖יִל בִּירוּשָׁלִָֽם׃

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'e֥lּeh pequdּata֖m lebe֣yt 'aboteyhe֑m liֽyhudah֙ shsare֣y 'alapi֔ym 'adena֣h hashsּa֔r ve'imּo֙ gּibּ֣orey cha֔yil shshelo֥shsh me'֖ot 'aֽlep׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)These are their numbers, according to their father’s houses: of Judah, the captains of thousands: Adnah the captain, and with him three hundred thousand mighty men of valour;

וְאֵ֥לֶּה פְקֻדָּתָ֖ם לְבֵ֣ית אֲבוֹתֵיהֶ֑ם לִֽיהוּדָה֙ שָׂרֵ֣י אֲלָפִ֔ים עַדְנָ֣ה הַשָּׂ֔ר וְעִמּוֹ֙ גִּבּ֣וֹרֵי חַ֔יִל שְׁלֹ֥שׁ מֵא֖וֹת אָֽלֶף׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'al-yad֖o yehochana֣n hashsּa֑r ve'imּ֕o ma'ta֥yim ushshemoni֖ym 'aֽlep׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)and next to him was Jehohanan the captain, and with him two hundred and eighty thousand;

וְעַל־יָד֖וֹ יְהוֹחָנָ֣ן הַשָּׂ֑ר וְעִמּ֕וֹ מָאתַ֥יִם וּשְׁמוֹנִ֖ים אָֽלֶף׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'al-yado֙ 'amaseya֣h ben-zikeri֔y hamּitenadּe֖b layhva֑h ve'imּ֛o ma'ta֥yim 'e֖lep gּibּ֥or chaֽyil׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)and next to him was Amasiah the son of Zichri, who willingly offered himself to the LORD, and with him two hundred thousand mighty men of valour.

וְעַל־יָדוֹ֙ עֲמַסְיָ֣ה בֶן־זִכְרִ֔י הַמִּתְנַדֵּ֖ב לַיהוָ֑ה וְעִמּ֛וֹ מָאתַ֥יִם אֶ֖לֶף גִּבּ֥וֹר חָֽיִל׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): umi֨n-bּineyami֔n gּibּ֥or cha֖yil 'eleyada֑ ve'imּ֛o noֽshsheqey-qe֥shshet umage֖n ma'ta֥yim 'aֽlep׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)Of Benjamin: Eliada a mighty man of valour, and with him two hundred thousand men armed with bow and shield;

וּמִ֨ן־בִּנְיָמִ֔ן גִּבּ֥וֹר חַ֖יִל אֶלְיָדָ֑ע וְעִמּ֛וֹ נֹֽשְׁקֵי־קֶ֥שֶׁת וּמָגֵ֖ן מָאתַ֥יִם אָֽלֶף׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): ve'al-yad֖o yehozaba֑d ve'imּ֛o me'aֽh-ushshemoni֥ym 'e֖lep chalutze֥y tzabaֽ'׃s

Edified Edition (EDE)and next to him was Jehozabad, and with him one hundred and eighty thousand prepared for war.

וְעַל־יָד֖וֹ יְהוֹזָבָ֑ד וְעִמּ֛וֹ מֵאָֽה־וּשְׁמוֹנִ֥ים אֶ֖לֶף חֲלוּצֵ֥י צָבָֽא׃ס

Phonetic (Hebrew): e֖lּeh hameshshareti֣ym 'et-hamּe֑leke milּeba֞d 'ashsher-nata֥n hamּe֛leke bּe'are֥y hamּibetza֖r bּekal-yehudaֽh׃p

Edified Edition (EDE)These served the king, besides those whom the king put in the fortified cities throughout all Judah.

אֵ֖לֶּה הַמְשָׁרְתִ֣ים אֶת־הַמֶּ֑לֶךְ מִלְּבַ֞ד אֲשֶׁר־נָתַ֥ן הַמֶּ֛לֶךְ בְּעָרֵ֥י הַמִּבְצָ֖ר בְּכָל־יְהוּדָֽה׃פ
